1 OPENING CRUISE NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2011 Hermanus Yacht Club turns 60! STRICTLY SMART This year s Opening Cruise was a truly stunning event. Hermanus Yacht Club celebrated their 60 th Anniversary Happy Birthday HYC! The weekend begun with the Commodore, Andrew Rissik, welcoming members in the Ward Room and explaining the day s schedule. Everybody proceeded to the stoep for the breaking of the burgee and the Sail-Past started with a gusty little breeze that spurned us all on, the sails were out in full, the crowds gathered on the lawns and the Opening Cruise was underway. That was followed by a strictly sumptuous tea, all thanks to those who contributed very enthusiastically to a call for teatime treats. Everyone enjoyed the tit bits and tea and then the trip down memory lane really began in earnest! Dick Metcalf presented a talk that covered our 60 years of history. It was wonderful to hear about the previous commodores, sailing expeditions, sailing regattas and fantastic history that all at the club have shared. It really reiterated that we are indeed a closely-knit bunch of folk who share a passion for sailing, creating new sailors and bringing the camaraderie and joy of sailing to all members. Not to mention the Good Old Times! 1

Saturday night at Hermanus Yacht Club has never looked so stunning. Everyone really went all out to impress. Men in their black suits and black ties, ladies with long, black dresses and high heel shoes - everybody was so smart and sophisticated. Buitenverwachting Wine Estate needs a big mention and thank you! They supplied 48 bottles of complimentary wine together with cheese/biscuits and snacks which was served on the stoep, against a beautiful mountain and sunset backdrop. We are so fortunate to be on this beautiful lagoon and in this glorious setting we share. Karine Wiggins set the scene with the sexiest Black & White affair. The tables were gorgeous and lanterns complimented it all. Thank you so much for all your preparation and hard work you angel, it was all so very worth it. 2

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW BABY, JULIA! Dominic was born at 2am on the 28 th September. Weighing 3,85kg and 52cm tall. His sister, Eva is very happy with him and he is apparently a very good baby.

We look forward to meeting him! FROM THE COMMODORE Andrew Rissik Well what can I say about our opening cruise and 60 th celebration other than what an awesome weekend we had! Well done to everyone who was part of the organization and thanks to all members who made the effort to dress their boats for the sail-past! Clearly all present have tough constitutions as almost every bottle of wine and champagne was consumed at the dinner and yet everyone looked so fresh when they rounded the top mark in Sunday s Channel Race! Well done to Ant Dancig who took 1 st position! WETPUPS AND YOUTH SAILING Jacqui Low We had a great start to our Youth Program with many new beginners enrolling for last weekend s first training session. A week before that we had an Oppie with our marketing banners displayed on the stage at Wetpups which has resulted in a whole lot of new applications as well as some new family memberships. The first weekend was really cold but fun. The children who could already sail set off to Mosaic Farm on the other side and did a great job getting there on a reach and navigating themselves to shore for a treasure hunt and home again. A sincere thank you to Graham Parker for allowing our visit. The first time sailors were a particularly enthusiastic and committed group and will be sailing well very soon. Looking forward to the 22nd/23rd October when it should be warmer!" INFRASTRUCTURE Many thanks to Nic Clarke who has ensured our sewage system has been upgraded successfully, he is now focusing on getting the new upper terraces constructed for boat and trailer parking. Jill and her team will be attending to much needed repairs on Hobie beach as well as starting the planned attack on removing the weed that has choked up all shores and the harbour. 4

5 A FINAL WORD REGARDING DOGS There have been more complaints than ever about the dog situation at the Yacht Club these past two weekends. The committee have been requested to consider banning dogs and I must say we are getting to the point that unless ALL DOG OWNERS ensure ALL DOG MESS is regularly cleaned up we will have to act. There are too many incidents of kids play areas and the lawn where people lay out their sails being fouled. DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE FRONT LAWNS EVEN IF THEY ARE ON A LEAD. If dog owners see another owner dog owner disregarding the rules, please take issue otherwise we will take a one size fits all approach. Committee members are not elected to police dogs and are at the club on weekends to sail, please do not put them in a position where they need to confront owners about their dogs! GALLEY/ENTERTAINMENT KARINE WIGGINS As you all know by now, our new galley operator, Denise Ladegaard has settled in and everybody will agree with me when I say: this lady can cook. If you haven t tasted her food yet, believe me, you are missing out. Welcome back Denise! The new sailing calendar is out and I trust that everybody has familiarized themselves by now with their duties. A lot of time and effort went into the planning of the calendar and we tried our best to give everybody just one duty for the season. We therefore ask your assistance for one weekend per season which leaves you with ample time to do what is most important: to enjoy our beautiful Yacht Club. Therefore, I want to urge all ladies on Galley duty to please be present on their duty weekend. I know unforeseen things happen but if you cannot make you duty weekend, it is your responsibility to organize somebody to stand in for you. Kindly report for duty at 13:30 on a Saturday and 9:30 on a Sunday. We will again be running the Galley-Book system this year for the convenience of the members and specifically for parents that do not want to hand out money to their kids all weekend. I do however request that a deposit be made first before purchase. If there are specific instructions regarding your kids, please let us know. Payment can be made at the galley. Our opening time for the galley is 14:00 on Saturdays and 10:00 on Sundays. We look forward to your support in the new season! 5

6 LOST PROPERTY, STOLEN AND UP KEEP! On a strictly formal note the TV room is not a tip! After the last two weekends the TV room has been left in a state. The club offers the TV room to all members and their kids, so do not abuse the facility. In future, should the room be left in a mess again and the same lack of respect shown for club premises, the room will be locked. Stolen goods : It has been noted that hose pipes, hose fittings and connections seem to be ''leaving'' the club. Should you have any club items in general, please return them. That includes any Galley items like coffee mugs, plates, bar glasses and braai grids, tongs and general garden equipment. These things are for all of us to share and enjoy the club together, it just costs us unnecessary money to replace these stolen items. Lost Property : Bruce Keytel has lost his dinner jacket kindly return it to Jill. Two jackets were left behind after the Opening Cruise again contact Jill. CHAIRMAN OF SAILING Bruce Keytel We started the sailing season off with a bang by having a good number of sail boats taking part in the sail past. Thanking all those who sailed. It is great to see our members sailing after such a long and cold winter. The season has moved forward with great enthusiasm, the first event of the year was a traditional channel race. This race took place on the Sunday, the club had a fleet of 10 boats sailing in light conditions. The Benning Field Trophy: 8 Laser entrants. There was fierce competition. Tie for first place was between Peter Du Preez and Frank Van Baarsel, with the tie break going to Peter. The Louw Cup: 5 Cariocas entrants. Brain James coming away with the spoils. With these events behind us we can look forward to good competition in the following events happening at the club: All classes Collingridge (Multi hulls) and Overstone (Lasers) Trophies on the 22 nd and 23 rd of October. Fibre Ball Nationals on the 22 nd and 23 rd of October - they are looking at 15 entries. Prain trophy (Cariocas) 29 th and 30 th of October. Squadron Tankard (Laser) and Gudgeon trophy (Multihulls) 12 th and 13 th of November. The Ladies Rose bowl on the 19 th and 20 th of November. Please note that all the Sonnet trophies will be used for the Multihull classes this season. On a more sombre note our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Lance Burger who was involved in accident at the Eastern Province Champs. 6

HYC RESCUE BOAT OPERATORS: We have drawn up a new protocol for the rescue boat skippers which is to be adhered to, as below: 1.

Rescue boats are the responsibility of the Skippers according to the Duty Roster, before and after organised sailing on normal sailing weekends.

The Date, Time, Operator s Name and Cell Number is to be entered in the register when collecting the designated Kill Switch Lanyard.

7 HYC RESCUE BOAT OPERATORS: We have drawn up a new protocol for the rescue boat skippers which is to be adhered to, as below: 1. Only Members or Authorised Operators, who have recognised skipper s tickets, may operate rescue boats as indicated on the notice and web site. 2. Rescue boats are the responsibility of the Skippers according to the Duty Roster, before and after organised sailing on normal sailing weekends. Use outside these times is to be self-regulated by filling in the register as per All rescue boats have boat specific registers in the sailing office. The Date, Time, Operator s Name and Cell Number is to be entered in the register when collecting the designated Kill Switch Lanyard. On return, the Kill Switch Lanyard is to be signed back in and the return time inserted. 4. During Regattas, the Race Officer may appoint a Rescue Officer for the duration of the event. 5. The Kill Switch Lanyard is to be clipped onto the operator during operation by way of a wrist strap, belt or secure item of clothing. 6. The following are to be checked before and after operating any rescue boats: Fuel, tow rope, anchor and warp, paddle, life jacket, first-aid box and condition of the propeller. 7. Operators are to familiarise themselves with the starting, lifting and reverse locking mechanisms of the motor, before operation. 8. Engines are to be tilted out of the water after each use, to prevent ingress of water in the gearbox and to prevent premature oxidation of the sacrificial anodes and trim tabs. 9. Please report any abuse and/or damaged/missing equipment to the Duty Officer or Manager. 10. Boat kill switches and equipment are colour coded as follows:-captain RED, Admiral YELLOW, Lieutenant BLACK, Seadog GREEN. So lets keep sailing; enjoying the racing and please encourage other HYC members to take part. The more competitors on the water the merrier! See you on the water 7
