1 WA Minnows in Darwin for 33rd Minnow Nationals Eight Minnows from TCYC and DBYC travelled to Darwin to compete in the 33 rd Northline Minnow Nationals from 8-13 July A range of wind conditions tested the sailors from 5 knots to 20 plus knots. Combine this with a 5m tide range and sailing in Darwin was a real challenge. Caelin Winchcombe (DBYC), Dean Cowan (DBYC), Chad Cowan (DBYC) and John Clements (TCYC) competed in the Open Fleet, Kieran Bucktin and Andrew Buchan (both TCYC) were competing in the Junior Fleet among the Open Fleet. Our Novice sailors were Matthew Clements and Drina Bucktin, both from TCYC. The WA Team - Drina, Chad, Kieran, Caelin, Andrew, Dean, Matthew and John with coach, Chris Bucktin Caelin Winchcombe in his stunning new black Barracuda really opened some eyes with some impressive sailing managing a 5 th place overall, the Victorian brother and sister duo of Hayden and Laura Harding proving stiff competition. Kieran Bucktin in Smoke on the Water finished 9 th overall and 3 rd Junior to two NT brothers (Huw and Patrick Wiltshire), local knowledge proving an advantage. Kieran started to fade at the end of the Regatta after catching a 110cm Dhufish on the layday!! Caelin Winchcombe in Barracuda being hunted down by Kieran Bucktin in Smoke on the Water
2 Chad Cowan in Wahoo sailed very well in the lighter breezes, his blitzing downwind sailing earning him 11 th place overall, which is a real achievement for one of the tallest kids in a Minnow. Dean Cowan in Spinnow was struck down with gastro in the last two races, but still managed to finish 14 th overall. Dean, a real light wind flyer, sailed very well considering the heavy winds and tides in the first two days!! Andrew Buchan on Rapid Fire finished in 8 th place in the Junior Dean Cowan from DBYC on Spinnow Fleet and 22 nd place overall, moving up the placings in each race. It is a wonder he sailed so well, as he and his family (all 6) stayed in a campervan for the duration of the regatta! Not too much sleep to be had, we imagine!!! Chad Cowan from DBYC on Wahoo John Clements in Poseidon was another big improver, again moving up the placings with each race, even with a dose of the flu and a torn sail. John finished in 23 rd place overall. John Clements from TCYC on Poseidon (above) Runner-Up National Novice Champion Matthew Clements beside Pokémon (below) In the Novice division, Matthew Clements in Pokémon took home a swag of 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd pennants and finished a very credible second place overall, after a collision cost him the last race and the Novice title. Andrew Buchan from TCYC with a Minnow Muster prize Matthew has proven himself ready for the Open Fleet now! Drina Bucktin sailing Knock Out was our youngest sailor at just 6 years old. Drina finished all 10 races plus the invitation race with her cut down sail and placed 10 th overall out of the 16 Novice sailors. Some great results for the 8 members of our WA team! Drina Bucktin sailing on Knock Out
3 The WA team looking smart in their team T-shirts at the Presentation Dinner Darwin was a welcome change with its warm breezes, palm trees and stunning sunsets after icy conditions in Perth over the last couple months. The Darwin Sailing Club and NT Minnow Association made everyone feel extremely welcome and created a very social event, with our sailors and their parents making many new friends during the regatta. Our WA families made the most of their time in Darwin, extending their holiday to experience some of the many attractions in the top end including Litchfield, Kakadu and Jabiru National Parks, the water parks and wave pool, fish feeding, crocodile cruises, reptile parks, and the Military and Aviation museums to name just a few. Thank you Darwin Sailing Club and the NT Minnow Association for such a fabulous regatta. The Minnow Association of WA would like to make a special thank you to the Ron Tough Foundation for their support in getting us to this event. Thanks also to Linfox for helping us transport our boats to and from Darwin, and to Perth Stitchings for our stylish WA Team T-shirts and YWA for the WA sailing vests. We would also like to say well done and congratulations to all our WA Minnow sailors for their excellent sailing and terrific sportsmanship during the regatta. Dean, Kieran, Drina and Matthew, with our support boat Big Red in the background The next challenge on the Minnow calendar is the 2014 National Championships in Blairgowrie VIC in January. We look forward to seeing everyone there! A glorious sunset over Fannie Bay on Presentation Night
