2 PAGE 2 MAY 2012 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Greetings Whalers, Congratulations to Bill Pringle on being selected as our March 2012 Whaler of the Month, winning the Fish ID contest, and bagging a cool Whaler Gear towel in the raffle. It was a big night for Bill. While I am talking about Bill, he is planning our Annual Chili Cook-Off for this coming July. He already has a number of past winners entering this year and he is looking for some new blood. If you think you have a killer chili recipe, get with him and get in the competition. It is loads of fun! It has been great seeing the General Meeting attendance increasing each month. More and more people are going on Dahlia s Boat Dives. Summer is coming and we are looking forward to seeing many of you at all of the events we have planned. Please check the Whaler s Calendar for these events and update your calendar accordingly. The SCUBA Show is May 5th & 6th. The Whalers are planning on going as a group to this yearly event. This year promises to be bigger than ever under the new management of Mark Young. We are planning for everyone to go to the show on Saturday, arriving at around 12:00 noon. As you go through the show at your own pace, look for fellow Whalers. If you have any kind of Whaler apparel, wear it and let s let everyone there know that the Whalers are in the house! Looking forward to seeing you all at our May General Meeting. Bruce President Whalers Dive Club

7 PAGE 7 Charmlee Park Hike I'm not sure if the hike was canceled or it was just don't everyone was scared off because of the rain, but those that didn't make it sure missed out on a beautiful day. I actually organized the hike for Bob and then it was passed to Wally and to top it off I also invited the Whalers dive club and our friends Ralph and Lisa (along with Jase) thinking it would be a good day to get for everyone to maybe make some new friends and have a fun 1/2 day together. It partially worked but not like I had hoped, the ones that showed up where Clay (CID), Keith (Whalers) and myself & family (Tessie, Jamee & Mojo). Our friends Ralph and Lisa showed up but we lost them quite quick as their agenda was to do some geo caching of which they were successful for their 1st time trying it. Also TJ & Michele where on their way but decided to make a change in plans when they seen the whales off the coast...whale watching is always fun and something that doesn't happen all that often. Joe & Teri also showed up a bit later with Joe's dog and had a fun time and guess what...everyone had their club shirts on. The hike was beautiful with clear skies and no mud puddles. The ground soaked up all the rain making it extra nice because then there wasn't any dust and the outside temperature was just right. We walked the outer perimeter of the park taking about 2 hours and maybe walking about 2-2 1/2 miles. The ike at Charmlee is really nice because there is a nice meadow, some cool looking rocks with oak trees and some of the best coastal views along our coastline. We could see Catalina, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz and just a little bit of Santa Rosa. The other nice thing about the park is it is dog friendly, only $4.00 for parking and it has some nice clean restrooms. There is also a nice picnic area but a stop at Neptune's Net is always good. Maybe next time some more of you can join us! Article and Pictures submitted by Ken Kollwitz

9 PAGE 9 Diving in a current: if there is no line, descend as fast as possible and head into the current. If there is no line and in a current, a safety stop on your ascent is not a good idea. Avoid situations calling for a safety stop (or a deco stop) when diving in a current. It would be a drag to start a dive in ventura and end it in san diego!

10 PAGE 10 In the January newsletter, I told you about our Scuba program for our returning Disabled Veterans. Here is a painless way to give a small donation to this organization by assigning our Ralph s Club Card points to the Disabled Veterans SCUBA Project (DVSP). The points are totaled up quarterly and redeemed at Ralph s for food, medicine, etc. The following are step-by-step instructions of how you can donate your Ralph s points to help the DVSP. Please join me in giving this small thank you for the many sacrifices these vets have given toward the fight against terrorism. First go to At the top right of the page click on Create an Account. You will need to have your Ralph s Club Card available to create an account. Log into your account, scroll to the bottom of the home pager, under Services, click on Community Contribution. At the bottom of that page, click Enroll. Enter your name, address, city, state, and click Save Changes. The next page is Community Contribution Program. In the box #1, enter: DIS- ABLED VETERANS SCUBA PROJECT, click the search button. You should now see, under #2, DISABLED VETERANS SCUBA PROJECT P.O. BOX 782, LOS ALAMI- TOS, CA Check the box, click Save Changes. The next page that comes up shows your preferences. Click on Community Rewards at the bottom, you should see the DVSP listed there. Congratulations! You ll now be giving your Ralph s Rewards Points to help needy disabled veteran divers. Thank You, Steve Roquemore
