1 The Orange County Dive Club March 2017 Let s Go Bowling! Join your fellow Club Members for an evening of fun and action on the bowling lanes! $20 per person - includes: 2 hours of bowling and shoes Please RSVP!! Place: Irvine Bowling Lanes 3415 Michelson Dr IRVINE, CA Date: March 10th Time: 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM Beer and Wine available! Come and party with your dive buddies! Message from the President - Hello! Thanks to everyone who came out to the February meeting. It's hard to believe February is over already and we are planning our March meeting! Please join us in March where our speaker will be Keith Martin, the Southwest Regional Manager for AUP (American Underwater Products) which comprises both Oceanic and Hollis. He will be discussing the history of AUP, the evolution of diving equipment and giving a hands-on gear presentation of the latest and greatest equipment Oceanic and Hollis have to offer. Back by popular demand is our Bowling Party Mixer on March 10th at Irvine Lanes! Join us for a fun night of bowling and some friendly competition with prizes! Space is limited. Please RSVP to president@lagunaseadwellers.com as soon as possible so we can save you a spot. Our calendar is filled with mixers, activities and events, but it will only be as successful as the effort we all put into it. Please volunteer! It truly "takes a village" to put together all of these events, and we appreciate all of your support and participation. The rain is finally almost gone and diving conditions will hopefully improve in the near future. I'm looking forward to seeing you somewhere under the sea very soon! Dive safely! 2 Page 2 A dive word from the VP! "Back from my other favorite sport, skiing, enjoyed a week at Vail with Kathleen and my brother and his wife. We went in early February to avoid spring conditions, but got there when Denver experienced a daytime high of 80 degrees; but Global Warming isn't happening, right? Surf and rain have limited beach diving recently, although there have been a few brief opportunities for some of you. I do look forward to the March 25 wreck dives on the Horizon out of San Diego, however. Hopefully the viz on the Yukon will be good. There are some spots open, come join us. Then on April 15, we have the Annual Easter Egg Hunt organizing at Heisler Park and searching at Shaw's Cove in Laguna, with a food-fest BBQ afterwards. Plan on joining in for a fun event and fine prizes. I am still looking for more committee volunteers for sign up registration, dive briefing for the divers, and prize handing-out afterwards. Give me a shout, <bhmckeon@cox.net> and lets all get involved. Regards, VP-Bruce Club Mixers and Events for coming months: (Mixers are on 2nd Friday of every month) March 10th - Mixer at Irvine Bowling Lanes - 6 to 8 PM April 14th - Mixer at Campus JAX 3950 Campus Drive Newport Beach April 15th - Easter Egg Hunt & BBQ April 22nd - Kelp Fest Laguna Beach at Main Beach May 3rd - Chamber Day/Evening May 6th & 7th - Scuba Show Long Beach Future Club Meeting Speakers Mar. - Keith Martin April - Open ANNOUNCEMENTS Laguna Sea Dwellers Welcomes our newest members It s great to see new people that joined the club. 3 Page 3 In case you missed it!: Here is what happened at the February Meeting! The monthly meeting started off with Memories by Joe Liburdi, who again did a fantastic job in stitching images and movies together mostly focused on a recent trip by some of our members to the Maldives. If you are on Facebook befriend Joe and wish him Happy Birthday. He will be celebrating his 87th on the fourth of March. Our speaker kept us engaged with knowledge about Abalone species and efforts to restock the wild population in Southern California, especially the rare and endangered white abalone which once thrived at three million plus individuals as a species and now only a mere hundred are left. As always we had some interesting questions for the speaker, which were answered superbly. The meeting ended with raffling of some great prizes, procured from Beach Cities Scuba. The master prize was a weekend-get-away donated by our President. Wish you were there? Club Secretary - Roeland Raffle Winners for January:Raffle Prizes for the Month bought from: Beach Cities 1. Well, if you missed the amazing trip we had planned to Farnsworth Banks last weekend, you weren t the only one. In fact, Mother Nature unleased her fury on Friday and the prior day we decided to call it. Onward to the next adventure: Wreck Alley on the big and beautiful Horizon dive boat, Saturday, March 25 th. This is a special trip in that the Horizon doesn t typically do day charters to the wrecks. We have 23 signed up as of this writing, 7 spots open, and an epic day of diving along the coast of San Diego planned. Please join us! Sign up on the LSD website before it s too late and you re left dry and brittle. Okay, now onward to the Reader Challenge! DID YOU HEAR ME OUT THERE? Here s the dealio. Khrystyna thinks nobody reads this stuff we put out. I beg to differ. So, if you re reading this Boat Committee report, please immediately boats@lagunaseadwellers.com and put the word Thumbs Up in the subject line. On March 12 th, the beginning of daylight savings time, and Purim for our Jewish friends, we will do a GRAND PRIZE drawing from all those who have responded. If nobody responds, I will carry all of Khrystyna s gear off the boat and to her car at the end of next trip we re on together. If at least 3 people respond, and hopefully a lot more, then Khrystyna has to do that for the winner of my drawing. Seem fair? I think so. It s time for the readership acid test, all courtesy of, and on the backs of, your trustworthy boat committee. Please respond today!
