Remval f cntact lenses after an eye injury shuld nly be undertaken by skilled persnnel. Remve cntact lenses and irrigate expsed eyes with cpius amunts f 0.9% saline r water fr at least 15 minutes. Ensure cmplete flushing f the eye by keeping eyelids pen and mving the eyelids by ccasinally lifting the upper and lwer lids. If irritatin, pain, swelling, lacrimatin, r phtphbia persist after 15 minutes f irrigatin, seek medical attentin withut delay. Psitive-pressure ventilatin using a bag-valve mask might be f use. Mnitr and treat, where necessary, fr arrhythmias. Start an IV D5W TKO. If signs f hypvlaemia are present use lactated Ringers slutin. Fluid verlad might create cmplicatins. Drug therapy shuld be cnsidered fr pulmnary edema. Inhaled Practical experience predicts, that the material prduces irritatin f the respiratry system, in a substantial number f individuals, fllwing inhalatin. In cntrast t mst rgans, the lung is able t respnd t a chemical insult by first remving r neutralising the irritant and then repairing the damage. The repair prcess, which initially evlved t prtect mammalian lungs frm freign matter and antigens, may hwever, prduce further lung damage resulting in the impairment f gas exchange, the primary functin f the lungs. Sulfur dixide irritatin prbably results frm the actin f sulfurus acid as the highly sluble gas disslves in mucus fluid. Shrt-term expsure causes brnchcnstrictin measurable as an increase in flw-resistance. The magnitude is cncentratin-dependent. Chief effects are upper respiratry tract irritatin and severe acute expsure may cause edema f the lungs and pssible respiratry paralysis.
