Specific advice n the cleaning f glass shuld always be sught frm a reputable glazier r prfessinal windw cleaner befre any glass cleaning is undertaken. Rutine Cleaning Hand cleaning f the glass surface, t visibly remve accumulated dust r fingerprints, can be accmplished using a number f different glass cleaning prducts. PROCEDURE: While cleaning ensure jewellery and watches are remved and glves shuld be wrn t avid scratching the surface f the glass. Scratches that ccur frm freign bjects will be permanent and are nt repairable. Fld the glass surface with the spray-n cleaning slutin r with a clth saturated with the cleaning slutin. Be generus with the amunt f slutin applied. Scrub the wetted surface with a clean, lint free twel r clth. 1

2 Wipe t dry with a clean, lint free twel r clth. The use f a squeegee is nt recmmended and culd increase the risk f damage t glass and as such shuld be avided if pssible. T prevent streaking, stp wiping when the glass is almst dry and there is a unifrm residue f misture left n the glass surface. The residue will quickly evaprate leaving a clean surface. RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS: Windex Multi-Surface Cleaner (clurless liquid) (Australia) r Mr Muscle Surface and Glass (New Zealand) (clear liquid available frm Supermarkets), prduced by SC Jhnsn & Sn Pty Ltd; *Other Windex branded varieties may be used but may lead t prblematic streaking f the glass. Or A mixture f ne part vinegar with ten parts water. In additin t the abve prducts, cmmercially available vinegar-based glass cleaners have generally demnstrated an ability t prvide a clean, streak free glass surface. Viridian des nt recmmend the use f ammnia-base and alchl-base glass cleaners because these prducts tend t leave visible streaks. Spt Cleaning Occasinally spt cleaning may be required t remve stubbrn dirt r freign materials which adhere t the surface. Spt cleaning prducts wrk t remve markings frm grease, il, tape adhesive, and crayns r ther waxy materials as well as paint and rub-ff marks frm plastics. PROCEDURE: While cleaning ensure jewellery and watches are remved and glves shuld be wrn t avid scratching the surface f the glass. Wipe clean using a dry, clean, lint free twel r clth fllwed by a rutine cleaning prcedure. 2

3 RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS: Methylated Sprits (slvent available frm supermarkets and hardware stres) Please use strictly in accrdance with manufacturer s recmmendatins and warnings. TOUGHENED GLASS The cleaning f tughened glass requires special cnsideratin. The glass surface n the ppsite side t the Safety Cmpliance Stamp may, as a cnsequence f the manufacturing prcess, have what s called pickup n the surface. Pickup is a depsit f very small particles f glass which are fused n the glass surface. It imprtant during the cleaning f tughened glass nt disldge these particles, therwise scratching f the glass surface may result. Blades r scrapers have been knwn t disldge pickup frm the glass surface permanently damaging the surface f the glass. The use f a sft cleaning clth is nly recmmended n tughened glass as t nt disldge 'pickup. It is suggested that prfessinal cleaners cnsult with their suppliers as t the suitability f available cleaning equipment, materials and methds befre attempting t clean tughened glass. Warning: - Viridian des nt warrant damage caused by razr blades r metal scrapers. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS & IMPORTANT NOTES: D nt use cleaners which cntain Hydrfluric r Phsphric acid as they are crrsive t the glass surface. D nt clean the glass when the glass is ht r in direct sunlight. D nt allw cleaning slutins t cntact the edges f laminated glass, Insulating Glass Units r Mirrrs. D nt stre r place ther material in cntact with the glass. (This can damage the glass r create a heat trap leading t thermal breakage). Abrasive cleaners, pwder based cleaners, scuring pads r ther harsh materials shuld nt be used t clean windws r ther glass prducts. Avid causing extreme temperature changes t the glass as this may lead t thermal fracture f the glass, i.e. d nt splash ht water n cld glass r freezing water n ht glass. Sme tapes r adhesives can stain r damage glass surfaces. Avid using such materials unless they are knwn t be easily remved. 3

4 Paint Damage:- D nt remve paint spts using a sharp razr blade r metal scrapers. The use f these items will cause damage t the glass. As an alternative, investigate slvents r graffiti remval materials, ensuring that they will nt damage the glass. Warning: - Viridian des nt warrant damage caused by razr blades r metal scrapers. What t d if glass breakage ccurs? If glass is damaged r brken ensure that experienced glaziers are engaged t rectify the situatin. Glass can be a safety hazard if nt handled prperly. D Nt Attempt t remve r replace brken glass unless yu are experienced in ding s, brken glass can be extremely dangerus and cause serius injuries r death. PROFESSIONAL CLEANERS Prfessinal glass cleaners have significant experience and access t specialised equipment, materials and methds which the general public may nt. Prfessinal glass cleaners are acknwledged experts in the cleaning f glass, Viridian ffers this infrmatin as general advice nly. Prfessinal glass cleaners shuld cnsider the fllwing infrmatin as part f the develpment f their wn cleaning prcesses and prcedures if desired. RECOMMENDATIONS DURING CONSTRUCTION Always fllw manufacturer s installatin and cleaning instructins. It s recmmended that glass be prtected frm the risk f cntaminatin caused by building materials and ther expsure risks during Cnstructin, this will greatly simplify the glass cleaning task at the end f the prject. If the glass cannt be prtected during cnstructin then the glass and frames shuld be cleaned frequently t ensure n permanent damage ccurs. Cnstructin dust, leachate frm cncrete and rusting frm steel can cntribute t the frmatin f mild chemical reactins; this may stain r therwise damage the surface f glass, viding warranties. Glass shuld be cleaned using nly cleaning materials which are free f grit and debris (t avid scratching and marking f the glass surface). Only detergents and cleaning slutins which are recmmended fr cleaning glass shuld be used. Mild detergents r rganic cleaners withut sulphates are preferable. Temprary screens must be installed if welding, sandblasting, flr sanding, cuffing r ther ptentially damaging cnstructin practices takes place near the glass. 4

5 Glass installatins which are adjacent t cncrete (e.g. cncrete slab flrs) require extra care and cleaning due t the abrasive nature f cncrete dust. All tradespeple shuld be advised t be aware f damaging glass and windws and t leave in place any materials prtecting the windw r glass during the cnstructin perid.
