1 LIFESAVING AWARDS Part f the Girl Scut prgram since the beginning f the mvement in the United States, Lifesaving Awards are natinal awards given t a registered Girl Scut wh has saved r attempted t save human life under circumstances that indicate herism r risk f her wn life. These awards are reserved fr thse Girl Scuts wh have perfrmed heric acts beynd the degree f maturity and training t be expected at their age. Training in health and safety is inherent in the Girl Scut prgram. Vlunteers are expected t see that girls receive prper instructin in hw t take care f themselves and thers in emergencies. A Girl Scut, because f the Prmise, Law, mtt, and slgan t which she has subscribed, is expected t be resurceful, skilled, and cmpetent t have presence f mind and t be f service t thers. Whether r nt an act f unusual bravery is beynd that which is expected f a Girl Scut is ften difficult t determine; each situatin has unique factrs, and many things need t be taken int cnsideratin. The initial judgment n the merit f an act that culd qualify fr a Lifesaving Award is a respnsibility f GSSEM. After GSSEM apprval, it is submitted t GSUSA fr final apprval. If apprved, GSUSA will send cnfirmatin t ur cuncil. KINDS OF AWARDS BRONZE CROSS MEDAL OF HONOR Given fr saving life r attempting t save life with risk t the candidate s wn life. Given fr saving life r attempting t save life withut risk t the candidate s wn life. When a rescue des nt qualify fr either f these awards under the criteria given belw, the cuncil may still give the girl sme frm f recgnitin. The type f recgnitin awarded shuld be determined by the nature f the rescue. BASIC CRITERIA FOR ALL LIFESAVING AWARDS The girl must be a registered Girl Scut at the time f the rescue. (N award is given t adults.) Awards are given fr saving, r attempting t save, human life nly. A girl wh has caused r cntributed t the circumstances necessitating the rescue is autmatically ineligible. Cnsideratin f the girl is paramunt. The acclaim accmpanying such an award might even be detrimental. If the rescue (r attempted rescue) has been a particularly harrwing experience r publicity is nt desired, it might nt be apprpriate t give an award. Parents, friends, and teachers shuld be helpful in making a wise decisin. If a girl meets the abve criteria, then the fllwing shuld be cnsidered in determining whether her act f rescue really merits a lifesaving award: Age, maturity, and training f the girl, as well as that f the persn(s) rescued. Degree f difficulty f the rescue. Nature f risk t the girl s life. Degree f danger t the life f the persn(s) being rescued.

2 Amunt f assistance received frm thers. Whether first-aid and emergency-care prcedures r prper techniques fr water, ice, r fire rescue were used. Extent f gd judgment shwn by rescuer. Circumstances surrunding the incident (e.g. site, weather). Rescuer s cmpliance with principles and standards utlined in Safety Activity Checkpints. Once it is determined that a girl shuld be cnsidered fr a Lifesaving Award, please cmplete the fllwing prcedures. PROCEDURES FOR LIFESAVING AWARDS 1. An act f rescue is brught t the attentin f GSSEM by the adult vlunteer. 2. Full infrmatin is submitted such as signed statements by the rescuer, rescued persn, and at least tw witnesses as rapidly as pssible. Send t: GSSEM Attentin: Series and Event Specialist 1333 Brewery Park Blvd Suite 500 Detrit, It is imprtant that the dcumentatin prcess begin immediately after the rescue and prceed as quickly as pssible. The decisin t recmmend a girl fr an award must be reached n lnger than six mnths after the event. If mre time is allwed t elapse, persns invlved may nt be available and the facts recalled may becme less accurate. 4. A recmmendatin is made by the cuncil fr final apprval by GSUSA. 5. The adult nminating the girl will be cntacted with status f award and apprval determinatin when it becmes available. 6. Once apprval is received, the GSSEM Cmmunicatins Department will determine the best way t present the award.
