1 Safe Strage f Hazardus Chemicals Brunswick Crèche and Day Nursery aims t prvide a safe envirnment where chemicals and hazardus equipment are safely stred and managed away, that pses n risk t the health and well-being f children, families, educatrs and ther staff r visitrs and t ensure that hazardus materials are stred apprpriately. By maximising respnsiveness f the prspective hazards f chemicals and equipment, we cndense the risk f harm t educatrs, children and families by ensuring hazardus prducts are safely stred. The centre defines a dangerus prduct as any chemical, substance r material that can cause ptential harm, injury r illness t persns r damage t the centre s envirnment. The centre categrises dangerus prducts int the fllwing sub grups; Hazardus chemicals and substances; Dangerus gds; Pisns; Drugs (including medicatins); and Miscellaneus dangerus prducts. The centre ensures that there are emergency prcedures and practices fr accidental spills, cntaminatin and crrespnding first aid plans fr all dangerus gds handled and stred in the centre. It is understd that there is a shared legal respnsibility and accuntability between, and a cmmitment by, all persns t implement the centre s Dangerus Prducts Plicy, prcedures and practices. Management will ensure: That every practical prvisin is taken t prtect children being educated and cared fr by the centre frm harm and any hazard likely t cause injury. (Natinal Law sectin 167.) All dangerus gds and hazardus substances are identified within the centre and included in a chemical register All risk assessments has been cnducted in cnsultatin with the Health and Safety Representative prir t using any dangerus r hazardus substance. Educatrs adhere t the Centre prcedures fr dealing with chemicals. Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and the Chemical Register is readily available and updated Apprpriate training and Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) is prvided fr emplyees wh may be expsed t dangerus gds and hazardus substances Relevant signage is displayed, highlighting the hazardus nature f chemicals used r stred in the wrkplace. There are emergency prcedures and practices fr accidental spills, cntaminatin and crrespnding first aid plans fr all dangerus gds handled and stred in the Centre. Actin is taken t remve any pests r vermin by a licensed exterminated, wh will prvide the Centre with a certificate f currency. Initially using nn-chemical methds such as physical remval, maintaining a clean envirnment, and use f any nn-txic prducts will be implemented. A Nminated Supervisr/ Certified Supervisr will ensure: At all times there is an educatr n the premises with ACECQA apprved first aid qualificatins. In the event that such activities shuld ccur, children will be relcated t anther rm f the centre fr perids f shrt duratin. Lengthy dangerus activities will be required t ccur when the centre is clsed. Shuld any pests r vermin be identified actin shuld be taken t rid the centre f the prblem. 2 Dangerus prducts will be stred in areas f the Centre that are nt accessible t children r in cupbards fitted with childprf lcks. T develp a hazardus substances register and a risk assessment fr any dangerus materials stred in bulk within the educatin and care premises. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) will be maintained at the centre. Material Safety Data Sheets must be kept n all chemicals used n the premises. Wrk Health and Safety (WHS) fficers t keep this infrmatin up t date at all times with a review f the flder annually. N MSDS is t be mre than 5 years ld. Any dangerus tls used fr maintain ace are t be inaccessible t children at all times. Maintenance staff must sign in befre cmmencing wrk in rder fr staff t ensure children are mved away frm area t be repaired. It is endeavured majr maintenance is t be dne utside hurs n centres peratin in rder t ensure maximum safety fr children. (E.g. remval f trees, repair t drainage system, etc.) Pisns Htline phne number is t be displayed next t all phnes within the centre. Cleaning chemicals and aids must be stred in lcked cupbards. Chemicals used by staff in spray bttles t clean tables and equipment must be clearly labelled with cntents and must be kept up high and ut f reach frm children in a lcked cupbard. Any cupbards with dangerus chemicals must have a sign stating chemicals stred n dr indicating this. Educatin abut dangerus prducts and their strage can be used t ensure bth children s and family awareness f the tpic. Activities, psters r infrmatin in newsletters can be used t highlight the issue Cleaning and hazardus prducts shuld nt be stred clse t fd prducts. Educatrs will: Seek medical advice if needed by cntacting the Pisns Infrmatin Line r by calling 000. Wear Persnal Prtective Clthing when handling dangerus materials. Strictly adhere t the Directins fr use n the prduct label. Dispse f all prducts safely, in accrdance with the manufacturer s instructins n the prduct label, Wrk Health and Safety regulatins and Cuncil by-laws. Cnsider minimising the use f dangerus prducts in the educatin and care service and use alternate green cleaning ptins. Cmplete half yearly (6 mnths) WHS checklists t ensure that any dangerus prducts used within the educatin and care service have current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and are stred apprpriately. Staff are respnsible t ensure that these areas remain secure and they d nt inadvertently prvide access fr children t these items. Educatrs and ther shuld always read the label befre use f any cleaning material, sprays r chemicals and be aware f apprpriate first aid measures. Chemicals used by staff in spray bttles t clean tables and equipment must be clearly labelled with cntents and must be kept in a lcked cupbard ut f reach frm children. All ptential dangerus prducts such as cleaning materials, disinfectants, flammable, pisnus and ther dangerus substances, tls, tiletries, first aid equipment, and medicatins will be stred in the apprpriate cntainers, clearly labelled that preferably have child resistant lids and caps and stred in the designated area which is inaccessible t the children. Only administer children s medicatins with family authrisatin and in accrdance with medical directins. See Medicatin Plicy. Ensure medicatin is stred in an area inaccessible t children. Ensure any medicatins r dangerus substances that requires refrigeratin, be placed in a labelled childprf cntainer, preferably in a separate cmpartment f the fridge. Lw irritant, envirnmentally friendly sprays t be used minimally and nly with adequate ventilatin. Preferably nt t be used in the presence f the children. All educatrs and ther staff (including casual staff) will be made aware n initial rientatin at the centre, crrect strage and usage prcedures fr ptential hazardus materials. Be encuraged t attend prfessinal develpment sessins t maximise their awareness f dangerus prducts, ptential hazards and surce chemical free methds t reduce pssible hazards in the educatin and care service. Ensure cleaning and hazardus prducts are nt be stred clse t fd prducts. Read the label befre using any cleaning material, sprays r chemicals and be aware f apprpriate first aid measures. Chemical Spill Prcedure Brunswick Crèche & day Nursery will adhere t the fllwing prcedure shuld a chemical be spilled in the Centre. Chemical spills shuld be cleaned up immediately in a safe manner. Remve children frm the area. Cntain the spill. Ensure that it is cleaned up thrughly and prmptly. Apprach with care when cleaning. Sme chemicals may lack clur r durs, but may still be dangerus. Never assume a chemical is harmless Identify chemicals and ptential hazards by using the apprpriate Material Safety Data Sheet. Use the manufacturer s recmmendatins t clean up the spill apprpriately. Decntaminate any equipment r clthing assciated with the spill. Dispse f any equipment shuld the spill have made it unsafe fr further use. Reflect n prcedures t analyse hw this incident ccurred and hw the incident culd be prevented in the future. Purchasing/String and Using Hazardus Substance When purchasing, string and/r using any dangerus chemicals, substances, medicines r equipment, ur centre will: Purchasing When purchasing dangerus chemicals, substances, medicines r equipment, the Nminated Supervisr will: Select and use the least hazardus substance r equipment Only select substances which have child resistant lids r caps All hazardus chemicals must be supplied with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) frmerly called a Material Data Safety Sheet. Our centre will adhere t the manufacturer s instructins fr use, strage, and first aid instructins recrded n the MSDS. Ensure educatrs adhere t the manufacturer s instructins fr use, strage, and first aid recrded n the SDS The Centre will keep a register f all hazardus chemicals, substances and equipment used at the Centre. Infrmatin recrded shuld include where they are stred, their use, any risks, and first aid instructins and the current MSDS. The register will be readily accessible. Using When using dangerus chemicals, substances, medicines r equipment, educatrs will: Ensure the child resistant lids r caps are prperly clsed after use Adhere at all times t manufacturer s advice and instructins when using prducts t clean furniture and equipment at the centre. Seek medical advice immediately if pisning r ptentially hazardus ingestin, inhaled, skin r eye expsure has ccurred, r call the Pisns Infrmatin Line n , r call an Ambulance n 000. 4 Manufacturer s instructins when using and dispsing f hazardus substances r equipment. In the case f any child r educatr becming injured by a chemical, substance r equipment, the centre will initiate ur emergency, medical and first aid prcedures, ntify the apprpriate authrity that administers wrkplace health and safety immediately and any ther persn r authrity as required by regulatins r guidelines. In any majr emergency invlving a hazardus chemical r equipment, a hazardus gas r a fire r explsin hazard, call the emergency centres, dial 000 and ntify the apprpriate authrity that administers wrkplace health and safety and any ther persn r authrity as required by regulatins r guidelines. String When string dangerus chemicals, substances, medicines r equipment, educatrs will: Stre all dangerus chemicals, substances and medicines in their riginal cntainers prvided by the manufacturer. All labels and/r use by dates shuld be kept intact at all times. Any substance fund t be stred in a different cntainer than riginally prvided, r with destryed labels and/r unknwn use by dates where apprpriate will nt be used under any circumstances. Cntainers shuld be dispsed f crrectly fllwing lcal cuncil guidelines, and nt reused under any circumstances. Cntainers will nt be reused under any circumstances All dangerus chemicals, substances and equipment must be stred in a lcked place r facility which is labelled, secure and inaccessible t children. These materials may include, but are nt limited t, all cleaning materials, detergents, pisnus r dangerus substances, dangerus tls and equipment including thse with sharp and razr edges and tiletries. Any substance fund t be stred in a different cntainer than riginally prvided, r with destryed labels and/r unknwn use by dates where apprpriate will nt be used under any circumstances. Particularly dangerus and hazardus materials such as pesticides, herbicides, petrleum, kersene, slvents and equipment which is perated by an engine r hazardus t children, will be stred in a lcked facility external t the main building f the Centre, and separate frm children s play r utdr envirnments. Educatrs shuld fllw the instructins f manufacturers, particularly f any prduct which may need t be stred in a refrigerated envirnment pursuant t the afrementined directives. Any substances that need t be refrigerated must be stred in a labelled, child resistant cntainer, preferably in a separate cmpartment r in a part f the refrigeratr inaccessible t children. Minimising Ptentially Dangerus Substances Our centre als implements the cncept f minimising the use f ptentially dangerus substances. Ordinary detergents will be used t help remve dirt frm surfaces. Clur-cded spnges (e.g., pink fr the kitchen, yellw fr the bathrm) will be used in rder t nt crss-cntaminate areas. Different rubber glves will als be used in each rm then hung ut t dry and air. Befre returning t the children educatrs will wash and dry hands. First Aid Actin n Dangerus prducts The fllwing steps are in an incident relating t dangerus prducts.
