5 What tabun is Tabun is a man-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent. Nerve agents are the mst txic and rapidly acting f the knwn chemical warfare agents. They are similar t pesticides (insect killers) called rganphsphates in terms f hw they wrk and what kinds f harmful effects they cause. Hwever, nerve agents are much mre ptent than rganphsphate pesticides. Tabun was riginally develped as a pesticide in Germany in Tabun is als knwn as GA. Tabun is a clear, clrless, tasteless liquid with a faint fruity dr. Tabun can becme a vapr if heated. Where tabun is fund and hw it is used It is pssible that tabun r ther nerve agents were used in chemical warfare during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. Tabun is nt fund naturally in the envirnment. Hw peple can be expsed t tabun Fllwing release f tabun int the air, peple can be expsed thrugh skin cntact, eye cntact, r inhalatin (breathing in the tabun). Tabun mixes easily with water, s it culd be used t pisn water. Fllwing release f tabun int water, peple can be expsed by drinking cntaminated water r getting cntaminated water n their skin. Fllwing cntaminatin f fd with tabun, peple can be expsed by eating the cntaminated fd. A persn s clthing can release tabun fr abut 30 minutes after cntact with tabun vapr, which can lead t expsure f ther peple. Tabun breaks dwn slwly in the bdy, meaning that repeated expsures t tabun and/r ther nerve agents can have a cumulative effect (build up in the bdy). Because tabun vapr is heavier than air, it will sink t lw-lying areas and create a greater expsure hazard there. Hw tabun wrks The extent f pisning caused by tabun depends n the amunt f tabun t which a persn was expsed, hw the persn was expsed, and the length f time f the expsure. Symptms will appear within a few secnds after expsure t the vapr frm f tabun, and within a few minutes t up t 18 hurs after expsure t the liquid frm. All the nerve agents cause their txic effects by preventing the prper peratin f the chemical that acts as the bdy s ff switch fr glands and muscles. Withut an ff switch, the glands and muscles are cnstantly being stimulated. They may tire and n lnger be able t sustain breathing functin. Cmpared with ther nerve agents, tabun is mre vlatile than VX but less vlatile than sarin. The higher a chemical s vlatility, the mre likely it will evaprate frm a 5

6 liquid int a vapr and disperse int the envirnment. Peple can be expsed t the vapr even if they d nt cme in cntact with the liquid frm. Because f its high vlatility, tabun is an immediate but shrt-lived threat and des nt last a lng time in the envirnment. Because tabun is mre vlatile than VX, it will remain n expsed surfaces fr a shrter perid f time cmpared with VX. Because tabun is less vlatile than sarin, it will remain n expsed surfaces fr a lnger perid f time cmpared with sarin. Immediate signs and symptms f tabun expsure Althugh tabun has a faint fruity dr, the dr may nt be nticeable enugh t give peple sufficient warning abut a txic expsure. Peple expsed t a lw r mderate dse f tabun by inhalatin, ingestin (swallwing), r skin absrptin may experience sme r all f the fllwing symptms within secnds t hurs f expsure: Runny nse Watery eyes Small, pinpint pupils Eye pain Blurred visin Drling and excessive sweating Cugh Chest tightness Rapid breathing Diarrhea Increased urinatin Cnfusin Drwsiness Weakness Headache Nausea, vmiting, and/r abdminal pain Slw r fast heart rate Abnrmally lw r high bld pressure Even a tiny drp f nerve agent n the skin can cause sweating and muscle twitching where the agent tuched the skin. Expsure t a large dse f tabun by any rute may result in these additinal health effects: Lss f cnsciusness Cnvulsins Paralysis Respiratry failure pssibly leading t death Shwing these signs and symptms des nt necessarily mean that a persn has been expsed t tabun. What the lng-term health effects are 6

7 Mild r mderately expsed peple usually recver cmpletely. Severely expsed peple are nt likely t survive. Unlike sme rganphsphate pesticides, nerve agents have nt been assciated with neurlgical prblems lasting mre than 1 t 2 weeks after the expsure. Hw peple can prtect themselves, and what they shuld d if they are expsed t tabun Recvery frm tabun expsure is pssible with treatment, but the antidtes available must be used quickly t be effective. Therefre, the best thing t d is avid expsure: Leave the area where the tabun was released and get t fresh air. Quickly mving t an area where fresh air is available is highly effective in reducing the pssibility f death frm expsure t tabun vapr. If the tabun release was utdrs, mve away frm the area where the tabun was released. G t the highest grund pssible, because tabun is heavier than air and will sink t lw-lying areas. If the tabun release was indrs, get ut f the building. If peple think they may have been expsed, they shuld remve their clthing, rapidly wash their entire bdy with sap and water, and get medical care as quickly as pssible. Remving and dispsing f clthing: Quickly take ff clthing that has liquid tabun n it. Any clthing that has t be pulled ver the head shuld be cut ff the bdy instead f pulled ver the head. If pssible, seal the clthing in a plastic bag. Then seal the first plastic bag in a secnd plastic bag. Remving and sealing the clthing in this way will help prtect peple frm any chemicals that might be n their clthes. If clthes were placed in plastic bags, infrm either the lcal r state health department r emergency persnnel upn their arrival. D nt handle the plastic bags. If helping ther peple remve their clthing, try t avid tuching any cntaminated areas, and remve the clthing as quickly as pssible. Washing the bdy: As quickly as pssible, wash any liquid tabun frm the skin with large amunts f sap and water. Washing with sap and water will help prtect peple frm any chemicals n their bdies. Rinse the eyes with plain water fr 10 t 15 minutes if they are burning r if visin is blurred. If tabun has been ingested (swallwed), d nt induce vmiting r give fluids t drink. Seek medical attentin right away. Dial 911 and explain what has happened. Hw tabun expsure is treated Treatment cnsists f remving tabun frm the bdy as sn as pssible and prviding supprtive medical care in a hspital setting. Antidtes are available fr tabun. They are mst useful if given as sn as pssible after expsure. 7
