2 2 Cncussins in Hckey A cncussin is a traumatic brain injury. There is n such thing as a minr brain injury. A player des nt have t be kncked ut t have a cncussin. Less than 10% f players actually lse cnsciusness when they sustain a cncussin. 3 Areas f Fcus 1.) Cncussin mechanism, yuth vulnerability and preventin 2.) Cncussin diagnsis and initial management 3.) Cncussin fllw-up evaluatin, recvery and return t play. Cncussin Mechanism, Yuth Vulnerability & Preventin Cncussins generally ccur because f a blw t the head, neck r bdy. Players ften dn t have the puck r have just released the puck. Many cncussins ccur because f illegal hits r cllisins r frm blws frm an ppnent s shulder r elbw. Cncussins ften result frm pen-ice, unanticipated hits.

4 4 Cncussin Signs Player appears dazed r stunned Player is cnfused abut his r her assignment Mves clumsily Answers slwly Behavir r persnality changes Unsure f the scre r ppnent Can t recall events befre the injury Can t recall events after the injury Initial Management If the player is unrespnsive call fr help and dial 911 Resuscitate as necessary if the athlete is nt breathing start CPR D nt mve the athlete D nt remve the helmet D nt rush the evaluatin Assume a neck injury until prven therwise 3 D nt have the athlete sit up r skate ff until yu have determined: N neck pain N pain, numbness r tingling N midline neck tenderness Nrmal muscle strength Nrmal sensatin t light tuch If the athlete is cnscius and respnsive withut symptms r signs f a neck injury. Help the player ff the ice t the lcker rm Perfrm an evaluatin D nt leave the player alne Ask the player hw he r she feels (keeping cncussin symptms in mind) Assess his r her rientatin (day, scre, ppnent, perid) Test immediate memry (have them repeat a list f wrds) Cncentratin (fr example list the mnths f the year in reverse rder) Balance (single, duble & tandem stance with eyes clsed fr 20 secnds) Delayed Recall (repeat the previus 5 wrds) Emergency Transprt (necessary when ) Cervical spine injury Prlnged lss f cnsciusness Fcal neurlgical deficit Decreasing level f cnsciusness Wrsening symptms Unequal pupil size Uncntrlled vmiting Suspected skull fracture Seizure activity

5 5 Initial Management 1.) N athlete shuld return t play 2.) Infrm the player s parents 3.) Refer t qualified health-care prfessinal 4.) Medical clearance is required t return t play Cncussin symptms and signs evlve ver time the severity f the injury and estimated time t return t play are unpredictable. When in dubt, sit them ut. Observatin by family members. Next day fllw-up. Return t play prtcl After clearance, the student-athlete begins a 6 step prcess. Activities are stpped if symptms appear during any level. Activities can resume the next day at the previus level if n symptms exist. Each phase requires a minimum f 1 day befre advancing Level 1 Cmplete physical and cgnitive rest.
