COURSE DESCRIPTION A practical curse designed as an intrductin t racquetball. The curse will invlve activities t teach students basic racquetball terms, rules, scring, safety, and techniques fr the frehand, backhand, verhead, and serve, as well as singles and dubles. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the cnclusin f the curse students will be able t: 1. Explain and demnstrate apprpriate racquetball strkes. 2. Explain the scring system and basic rules. 3. Demnstrate singles and/r dubles play and strategy. NATURE OF COURSE DELIVERY: Face-t-Face REQUIRED TEXT/READINGS See attached Rules at the end f the syllabus. CLASS INFORMATION 1. Students with injuries r pre-existing cnditins that may affect perfrmance must infrm the instructr. 2. Mst f the cmmunicatin will be thrugh GMU . REQUIREMENTS 1. Students must bring their wn racquetball racquet. 2. Purchase a pair f gggles ($8 - $20 at lcal retailer). 3. Purchase a can f balls ($2 - $3 at lcal retailer). 4. Practical (60%) Instructr will bserve and evaluate frehand, backhand, and serve during rund rbin turnament play. 5. Instructr Errr (2%) this gives students an extra 1% autmatically added in fr any pssible instructr grading errrs that might ccur. The back edge f the shrt line is midway between, and is parallel with, the frnt and back walls. 2. Service Line. The frnt edge f the service line is parallel with, and five feet in frnt f, the back edge f the shrt line. 3. Service Zne. The service zne is the 5' x 20' area bunded by the bttm edges f the side walls and by the uter edges f the shrt line and the service line. 4. Service Bxes. The service bxes, used in dubles play, are lcated at each end f the service zne and are designated by lines parallel with the side walls. The edge f the line nearest t the center f the curt shall be 18 inches frm the nearest side wall. 5. Drive Serve Lines. The drive serve lines, which frm the drive serve zne, are parallel with the side wall and are within the service zne. The edge f the line nearest t the center f the curt shall be three feet frm the nearest side wall. 6. Receiving Line. The receiving line is a brken line parallel t the shrt line. The back edge f the receiving line is five feet frm the back edge f the shrt line. The receiving line begins with a line 21 inches lng that extends frm each side wall. These lines are cnnected by an alternate series f six-inch spaces and six-inch lines. This will result in a line cmpsed f 17 six-inch spaces, 16 six-inch lines, and tw 21-inch lines. 7. Safety Zne. The safety zne is the 5' x 20' area bunded by the bttm edges f the side walls and by the back edges f the shrt line and the receiving line. The zne is bserved nly during the serve. SKILL GRADING This will ccur during game play. Lsing the serve is called a side ut in singles. In dubles, when the first server lses the serve, it is called a handut and when the secnd server lses the serve, it is a side ut. Rule 1.5 Match, Game, Tiebreaker A match is wn by the first side winning tw games. The first tw games f a match are played t 15 pints. If each side wins ne game, a tiebreaker game is played t 11 pints. Unless a rule exceptin exists, the first side reaching the requisite scre is the winner Rule 3.1 Serve In all USAR sanctined cmpetitin (except as nted in Rule 5), the server will have tw pprtunities t put the ball int play. The player r team winning the cin tss has the ptin t either serve r receive at the start f the first game. The secnd game will begin in reverse rder f the first game. The player r team scring the highest ttal f pints in games 1 and 2 will have the ptin t serve r receive first at the start f the tiebreaker. If bth players r teams scre an equal number f pints in the first tw games, anther cin tss will take place and the winner f the tss will have the ptin t serve r receive. Rule 3.2 Start The server may nt start the service mtin until the referee has called the scre r "secnd serve." The referee shall call the scre as bth server and receiver prepare t return t their respective psitins, shrtly after the previus rally has ended--even if the players are nt ready. The serve is started frm any place within the service zne. Certain drive serves are an exceptin. See Rule 3.6. Neither the ball nr any part f either ft may extend beynd either line f the service zne when initiating the service mtin. Stepping n, but nt beynd, the line is permitted. Hwever, when cmpleting the service mtin, the server may step beynd the service (frnt) line prvided that sme part f bth feet remain n r inside the line until the served ball passes the shrt line. The server may nt step beynd the shrt line until the ball passes the shrt line. See Rule 3.9(a) and 3.10(i) fr penalties fr vilatins. Rule 3.3 Manner After taking a set psitin inside the service zne, a player may begin the service mtin. The service mtin is any cntinuus There is a drive serve line 3 feet frm each side wall in the service zne. Viewed ne at a time, each drive serve line divides the service zne int a 3-ft and a 17-ft sectin. The player may drive serve between the bdy 4

5 and the side wall nearest t where the service mtin began nly if the player, the racquet, and the ball (nly until it is struck by the server) starts and remains utside f that 3-ft drive service zne until the served ball crsses the shrt line. A drive serve invlving "any cntinuus mvement" (see Rule 3.3 Manner), beginning in ne 3-ft drive service zne and cntinuing int the ppsite 3-ft drive service zne, is a fault serve. (a) The drive serve znes are nt bserved fr crss-curt drive serves, the hard-z, sft-z, lb r half-lb serves. (b) The 3-ft line is part f the 3-ft zne and defines a plane that, if brken, is an infractin. (See Rule 3.9h) Rule 3.7 Defective Serves Defective serves are f three types resulting in penalties as fllws: (a) Dead-Ball Serve. A dead-ball serve results in n penalty and the server is given anther serve (withut canceling a prir fault serve). (b) Fault Serve. Tw fault serves result in an ut (either a side ut r a handut). (c) Out Serve. An ut serve results in an ut (either a side ut r a handut). Rule 3.8 Dead-Ball Serves Dead-ball serves d nt cancel any previus fault serve. The fllwing are dead-ball serves: (a) Curt Hinders. A serve that takes an irregular bunce because it hit a wet spt r an irregular surface n the curt is a dead-ball serve. In additin, any serve that hits any surface designated by lcal rules as an bstructin rather than being ut-f-play. (b) Brken Ball. If the ball is determined t have brken n the serve, a new ball shall be substituted and the serve shall be replayed, nt canceling any prir fault serve. (c) Out-f-Curt Serve. A served ball that first hits the frnt wall and, after striking the flr, either ges ut f the curt r hits a surface abve the nrmal playing area f the curt that has been declared as ut-f-play fr a valid reasn [See Rule 2.1(a)]. Rule 3.9 Fault Serves The fllwing serves are faults and any tw in successin result in an ut: (a) Ft Faults. A ft fault results when: 1. At the start f r during the service mtin, any part f the server (r dubles partner), including the racquet, tuches the flr utside f the service zne. 2. At the end f the service mtin, the server steps with either ft n the flr beynd the service line (with n part f the ft n the line r inside the service zne) befre the served ball crsses the shrt line. (b) Shrt Serve. A shrt serve is any served ball that first hits the frnt wall and, n the rebund, hits the flr n r in frnt f the shrt line either with r withut tuching a side wall. (c) Three-Wall Serve. A three-wall serve is any served ball that first hits the frnt wall and, n the rebund, strikes bth side walls befre tuching the flr. 5

6 (d) Ceiling Serve. A ceiling serve is any served ball that first hits the frnt wall and then tuches the ceiling (with r withut tuching a side wall). (e) Lng Serve. A lng serve is a served ball that first hits the frnt wall and rebunds t the back wall befre tuching the flr (with r withut tuching a side wall). (f) Buncing Ball Outside Service Zne. Buncing the ball utside the service zne, including the ball tuching a side wall, as a part f the service mtin is a fault serve. (g) Serving the Ball Withut a Bunce. Tssing the ball int the air and serving it withut a bunce is a fault serve. (h) Illegal Drive Serve. A drive serve in which the player fails t bserve the 17-ft drive service zne as utlined in Rule 3.6. Rule 3.10 Out Serves Any f the fllwing results in an ut: (a) Tw Cnsecutive Fault Serves [see Rule 3.9], r a single fault serve in ne serve play [see exceptins: 5.0]. (b) Missed Serve Attempt. Any attempt t strike the ball that results in a ttal miss r in the ball tuching any part f the server's bdy, including the ft. Als, allwing the ball t bunce mre than nce during the service mtin. (c) Tuched Serve. Any served ball that n the rebund frm the frnt wall tuches the server r server's racquet befre tuching the flr, r any ball intentinally stpped r caught by the server r server's partner. (d) Fake r Balk Serve. Any mvement f the racquet tward the ball during the serve that is nn-cntinuus and dne fr the purpse f deceiving the receiver. If a balk serve ccurs, but the referee believes that n deceit was invlved, the ptin f declaring "n serve" and having the serve replayed withut penalty can be exercised. (e) Illegal Hit. An illegal hit includes cntacting the ball twice, intentinally carrying the ball, r hitting the ball with the handle f the racquet r part f the bdy r unifrm. (f) Nn-Frnt Wall Serve. Any served ball that des nt strike the frnt wall first. (g) Crtch Serve. Any served ball that hits the crtch f the frnt wall and flr, frnt wall and side wall, r frnt wall and ceiling is an ut serve (because it did nt hit the frnt wall first). A serve int the crtch f the back wall and flr is a gd serve and in play. A served ball that hits the crtch f the side wall and flr beynd the shrt line is in play. (h) Out-f-Curt Serve. An ut-f-curt serve is any served ball that first hits the frnt wall and, befre striking the flr, either ges ut f the curt r hits a surface abve the nrmal playing area f the curt that has been declared as ut-f-play fr a valid reasn [See Rule 2.1(a)]. (i) Safety Zne Vilatin. An immediate lss f serve shall result if, after the serve has been struck, the server r dubles partner step int the safety zne befre the served ball passes the shrt line. 6

7 Rule 3.11 Return f Serve (a) Receiving Psitin 1. The receiver may nt break the plane f the receiving line with the racquet r bdy until the ball either bunces in the safety zne r else crsses the receiving line. Fr example, if the receiver steps n the dashed receiving line with either ft (with any part f the ft cntacting the line) befre either f the tw preceding things happen, a pint shall be called fr the server. 2. The fllw thrugh may carry the receiver r the racquet past the receiving line, but neither may break the plane f the shrt line unless the ball is struck after rebunding ff the back wall. 3. Any vilatin by the receiver results in a pint fr the server. (b) Defective Serve. A player n the receiving side may nt intentinally catch r tuch a served ball (such as an apparently lng r shrt serve) until the referee has made a call r the ball has tuched the flr fr a secnd time. Vilatin results in lss f the rally, i.e. a pint. (c) Legal Return. After a legal serve, a player receiving the serve must strike the ball n the fly r after the first bunce, and befre the ball tuches the flr the secnd time; and return the ball t the frnt wall, either directly r after tuching ne r bth side walls, the back wall r the ceiling, r any cmbinatin f thse surfaces. A returned ball must tuch the frnt wall befre tuching the flr. (d) Failure t Return. The failure t return a serve results in a pint fr the server. Rule 3.12 Changes f Serve (a) Outs. A server is entitled t cntinue serving until ne f the fllwing ccurs: 1. Out Serve. See Rule Tw Cnsecutive Fault Serves [see Rule 3.9], r a single fault serve in ne serve play [see exceptins: 5.0]. 3. Failure t Return Ball. Player r team fails t keep the ball in play as required by Rule 3.11 (c). 4. Penalty Hinder. Player r team cmmits a penalty hinder which results in an ut. See Rule (b) Side ut. Retiring the server in singles is called a side ut. (c) Effect f Side ut. When the server (r serving team) receives a side ut, the server becmes the receiver and the receiver becmes the server. 7
