Fr many f yu, we appreciate that this may by yur first experience with Ringette, as well r at the very least yur first experience as a cach. This manual is designed t serve as a tl that will help yu get familiar with Ringette, and with caching practices. 4 GETTING STARTED: Yu will receive a caching handbk, frm the EFCLRA executive with imprtant infrmatin abut caching within the club. This handbk will include such things as lines f cmmunicatin, cntact infrmatin, club plicy, pssible turnaments, equipment guidelines and apparel. Sme essential items that yu shuld have prir t yur first practice are: Team list A phne list f assciatin administratrs Schedule Cpies f medical frms r blanks t be filled ut * List f mandatry equipment Criminal recrds check Caches handbk Yu will als be supplied with all equipment necessary t run yur team. This includes; rings, pinnies, cnes, and gal equipment etc. At the very least yu shuld have the fllwing at every practice; rings, pinnies, cnes t assist with drills. 3

5 PARENTS MEETING: Once yu have yur team list, yu are nw ready fr yur first parents meeting. We all knw the value f a first impressin s yu will want t be rganized fr this meeting. In this meeting, yu will want t share with the parents yur wn caching philsphy as well as the accepted philsphy f caching U9 players. Sme parents will have expectatins that their children will all be able play the game like a wrld champin when they are finished this winter s be aware that yu may have t d a bit f cnvincing at the meeting. It is als very easy fr a cach t vlunteer t d everything, dn t be afraid t ask fr vlunteers amngst yur parents. 6 COACHING THE U9 PLAYER: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE U9 PLAYER: Still figuring ut the fundamental athletic skills Yur players will be very active and nt want t stand still fr t lng Shrt attentin span Sensitive t criticism, always be psitive. Players this age like t be cmplimented and recgnized Enjy gymnastic type activities Heavily influenced by rle mdels, r rather parents, teachers, and caches They are naturally egcentric s keep the team cncept quite basic At this age, Ringette is still abut having fun. Caches shuld encurage players t be actively invlved in the game. By this pint in their develpment, players will begin t remember what they learned the previus day r at the mst recent practice. What they will nt be able t d is cnsistently perfrm what they learned. This is imprtant t remember s that yu dn t lse patience in their inability t cnsistently perfrm a desired technique. Much like caching the U6 players, it is yur jb t create a fun and safe envirnment. While we will nw begin t mve twards Ringette specific skills such as checking and shting, yur practices shuld still emphasize the ABCs f mvement: Agility Balance, C-rdinatin Speed 5

Keeping this in mind, Ringette at this age shuld be discuraged in any frm ther than as a fun, activity fr kids that happens t increase awareness f Ringette. 9 ROLE OF THE COACH: A cach tday can be described as many things: Cach, Teacher, Mentr, Rle-mdel, Cunsellr and in a mnth r s, yu will mst likely have called yurself all f these. COACHING ESSENTIALS: Be punctual Be rganized, have yur practice prepared befre heading t the arena Lk like a cach, be prfessinal Set standards and be cnsistent with them Cnduct age-apprpriate practices Be enthusiastic, especially with yung players Have fun POOR COACHING TECHNIQUES Have players stand in lng bards BODY LANGUAGE Be very aware f yur wn bdy language. 80% f cmmunicatin is nn - verbal and players will very quickly pick up n negativity, disinterest r disapprval frm yur bdy language and this will be reflected in their wn perfrmance. Give lng lectures n hw t perfrm activities Skate laps arund the rink as cnsequence r punishment Crrect every mistake yu see in a player Practices are nt fun fr yur players Shw up late r nt prepared Create an envirnment where yu are dictating every mve f yur players D nt have players rtate in a game r seasn While we have all at times resrted t sme f the abve mentined caching methds, research tday tells us that there is a better apprach t player develpment. If yu ntice that yu have been ding sme f the abve techniques, it des nt mean yu are a pr cach, it is just suggesting that there might be anther methd that culd prve mre valuable. 8

10 ADDITIONAL PRINCIPLES OF COACHING: Develpment Apprpriate When designing yur practice, ensure that yur drills are age apprpriate. As an example, yu wuldn t want yur U9 players attempting ne timers prir t learning the technique f the wrist sht! Clear, Cncise, Crrect Infrmatin Give clear infrmatin n what yu expect in a particular drill r game Cncise, get straight t the pint Crrect, the infrmatin yu give players n hw t d smething must always be crrect. D nt make up what yu dn t knw. Simple t Cmplex Fr example in this age grup, yu shuld start yur practice with statinary passing t wrk n eye hand crdinatin as well as the stabbing f the ring. As the practice mves alng yu can slwly increase the challenge t the players by wrking n lead passes r bard passes. Safe and Apprpriate Training Area Decisin Making Prir t practicing always skate arund the arena and lk fr anything that might pse a safety cncern fr yur players. Als, make sure all gates are clsed tightly. Players at U9 age shuld be given sme pprtunities t make decisins n their wn. The Value f Demnstratin Regardless f the sprt r activity, a cach s demnstratin is a must fr player develpment. With s many different types f learners that yu will be addressing, a demnstratin adds t the verbal explanatin f hw t d smething. Nt nly will yur players be able t see hw a particular skill is accmplished, they will als lk up t and respect yur ability t cach them. Fr the U9 age grup, yu dn t need playing career behind yu but yu d need t knw the prper technique f sme f the basic Ringette skills such as passing/receiving, checking and shting. If yu knw that yu will be demnstrating a particular skill in yur next sessin, ensure that yu spend sme time prir t that t ensure that yur technique is crrect. If yu are nt cmfrtable with yur ability t demnstrate, yu can get an lder talented player t d that fr yu. 9

11 PRACTICE TOOLS PLANNING YOUR PRACTICE: Imprtant pints in preparing yur practice: Incrprate the fundamental sprt and mvement skills Activities with the ring shuld include games that prmte skating, stpping/starting, turning r changing directin Try t play games t simulate an actual game Children this age lve t use their imaginatin when they play, keep this in mind when designing activities Keep yur activities shrt and simple as the ability fr children this age t stay fcused is very limited Lts f encuragement and patience Avid activities where players wait in lines t perfrm a pre-determined mvement r required actin D nt try t replicate the rganizatinal schemes f lder player s practices It is a great idea t use lder players as rle mdels Cnfidence is key U9 players wrk well in pairs Practice Time: When preparing yur practice yu shuld keep ne very imprtant thing in mind; ensure yur players will have FUN! Yur practice shuld emphasize the fun elements f the sprt, and the develpment f gd athletic skills. Each practice shuld nly have ne emphasis whether that is skating, passing/receiving, shting, etc. While yu may incrprate mre than ne technique the fcus shuld be n ne. As an example, there may be a skating and passing cmpnent t a shting drill. Make sure that yu als schedule in many water breaks. 10

12 Have an Imaginatin: It was already mentined that lines are nt a gd idea and the U9 player will get bred quickly if all they d is drills where they stand a lt, have t listen t the cach talk all the time r cnstantly have their games stpped when they finally d get t play. It is up t yu, the cach t cme up with fun games that will develp sme skill but mre imprtantly allw the players t enjy their experience. Ideally we want the players t mistake all drills fr fun games and it is here that yu will need t use sme creativity. There are all srts f fun games such as sharks and fishes, Dr. Ringette and capture the ring that will imprve basic technique and prvide the fun envirnment that yu are after fr this age grup.
