3 Manual cntrls: 1. (L1) balance 2. (L2) dipper Sectin 1. Startup and Cleaning the Trugh 1. Lg int Cral and enable LB trugh. Turn n the blwer and the light fr the trugh (verhead switches). 2. Open the sftware sgserver 3. Clean the trugh and the barriers liberally with methanl and clean rm wipes, paying particular attentin t the trugh middle and edges. (2-3 times) 4. Put barriers back and verfill the trugh with Milli-Q water. 5. Cut a strip f filter paper, hk it with the red metal wire, and wet it with Milli-Q water. Measure the ttal weight f the wet filter paper and metal wire (Wilhelmy plate). Sectin 2. Calibratin f balance 1. Turn ff the blwer 2. Click n Tl (screw driver icn) 3. Click n File, and chse New Isthermal 3. Put a desired file name (therwise the sftware wn t wrk) and then click Start 4. Click n Cntrl and chse trugh 2 5. Lad the syringe with desired slutin n syringe pump 2. Flat the Tefln tubing n tp f water surface 3. Turn n pwer f the syringe pump, and set the desired injectin rate (nrmally 2.5 ml/hr-5ml/hr) 4. Click n pumping buttn n the right (the red light shuld be n)( This depends n the mdel f yur syringe pump) 5. Wait.. Sectin 5. Finding the clsed-pack film 1. Click n Depsitin icn 2. Click n File, and chse New isthermal 3. Put a desired file name (therwise the sftware wn t wrk) and then click Start 4. Click n Cntrl and chse trugh 2 5. 5 Sectin 6. Depsitin click n stp in the trugh 2 windw Nw yu have a clsed-packed film. 1. Munting sample. Leave sme space away frm the edge f trugh by adjusting the angle and psitin f yur dipper head. (Nte: dn t drp yur substrates in the trugh!) 2. Chse File new dipping name yur depsitin click start 3. Chse Cntrl Dipper click D1 zer (set riginal lcatin as a zer) in upper limit parameters, set upper speedup rate ( 5-10 mm/min) 4. Click D1 dwn and mnitr yur substrate. Stp when the substrate is clse t the dipper since there is a delay f respnse. 5. At lwer limit parameters, click n Set 6. In rder t keep a cnstant surface pressure Chse Cntrl Trugh2 in the recrding ptin, select frm g t stp/dip ; in the target ptins, select surface pressure Put the value f the surface pressure with clsed-packed films in the surface pressure ptin and the desired barrier cmpressin rate (in rder t keep depsitin at a cnstant pressure) 7. Select start in the dipper windw and g/hld in the trugh 2 windw. 8. Once the depsitin is dne, click n stp. d yu want t save the file windw will prp up, select yes 9. Repeat the prcess fr yur desired depsitin Sectin 7. Cleanup 1. Take ff Wilhelmy plate (be careful nt t pull the micrbalance) 2. Clean particles n surface using huse vacuum (Nte: avid sucking water int huse vacuum) 3. After cleaning particles n the water surface, pen barriers by chsing expand in the trugh 2 windw and remve water. 4. Clean the trugh with methanl at least twice 5. Turn f light and blwer 6. Lg ut frm Cral Step 4: Dispse f hazardus slvents, slutins, mixtures, and reactin residues as hazardus waste. Step 5: Cleanup wrk area and lab equipment. Stanfrd University by S. Wang & J. Tk 5

6 Step 6: Remve PPE and wash hands. Step 7: Sign ff lgbk #7 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES A. Health-Threatening Emergencies (ex: fire, explsin, health-threatening hazardus material spill r release, cmpressed gas leak, r valve failure) 1. Call (r 286 in the Schl f Medicine). 2. Alert peple in the vicinity and activate the lcal alarm systems. 3. Evacuate the area and g t yur Emergency Assembly Pint (EAP): 106 Center f Engineering Plaza 4. Remain nearby t advise emergency respnders. 5. Once persnal safety is established, call EH&S at (r 286 in the Schl f Medicine). 6. Prvide lcal ntificatins: Jeffrey Tk, If persnnel expsed r injured: 1. Remve the injured/expsed individual frm the area, unless it is unsafe t d s because f the medical cnditin f the victim r the ptential hazard t rescuers. 2. Call (r 286 in the Schl f Medicine) if immediate medical attentin is required. 3. Call (r 286 in the Schl f Medicine) t reprt the expsure t EH&S. 4. Administer first aid as apprpriate. 5. Flush cntaminatin frm eyes/skin using the nearest emergency eyewash/shwer fr a minimum f 15 minutes. Remve any cntaminated clthing. 6. Bring t the hspital cpies f MSDSs fr all chemicals the victim was expsed t. B. Nn-Health Threatening Emergencies Fr nn-health threatening injuries and expsures Call the Occupatinal Health Center at fr mre infrmatin and t schedule an appintment. Fr hazardus material spills r releases which have impacted the envirnment (via the strm drain, sil, r air utside the building) r fr a spill r release that cannt be cleaned up by lcal persnnel: 1. Ntify Stanfrd University respnders by calling (r 286 in the Schl f Medicine). These services are available 24 hurs a day, 7 days a week. 2. Prvide lcal ntificatins: Jeffrey Tk, Identify the area management staff that must be cntacted and include their wrk and hme numbers. Small Spills/Lcal Cleanup: In the event f a minr spill r release that can be cleaned up by lcal persnnel using readily available equipment (absrbent, available frm EH&S in Small Spill Kit): 1. Ntify persnnel in the area and restrict access. Eliminate all surces f ignitin. 2. Review the MSDS fr the spilled material, r use yur knwledge f the hazards f the material t determine the apprpriate level f prtectin. 3. Wearing apprpriate persnal prtective equipment, clean up spill. Cllect spill cleanup materials in a tightly clsed cntainer. Manage spill cleanup debris as hazardus waste. Stanfrd University by S. 7 4. If greater than 30 ml, r if it will take lnger than 15 minutes fr yu t clean up, immediately call EH&S at (r in the Schl f Medicine, x286) t reprt the spill, and ntify yur supervisr. 5.
