2 Some examples of CBRE Hand injuries on Shell fuel stations in the last 10 months 1.Netherlands 2.Norway 3.UK 4.UK Technician installing an air conditioning unit Cut injury caused by sharp metal ductwork. Technician releasing the tow bar on a trailer Impact injury between two metal surfaces. Technician moving equipment on site Cut hand injury caused by by unseen metal wire as lifting the equipment. Technician working on a fuel dispenser Cut hand caused by a fall onto dispenser metalwork. Gloves were being worn for incidents 1,2 & 4 Hand tools are designed to save your hands Use them

3 Why Hands? Over the last 10 months, we have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of hand injuries on Shell retail stations. To date these have been restricted to cuts and stitches, with no long term impact. However with this increase comes the statistical probability of a more serious hand injury. How? Through raising everyone s awareness on the risk of hand injury. Through reflecting on a personal hand injury Near Miss or injury and then sharing these. finger or hand loss Hand injuries requiring medical treatment,stitches etc. Near Miss or Minor hand injuries Where danger lingers, watch your fingers

5 Are you wearing the correct level of glove protection? We all know that gloves (PPE) are the last line of protection control for your hands. However even when wearing gloves, an injury can still occur. This can be seen from some of the examples of CBRE incidents this year. Always consider as part of a Last Minute Risk Assessment Are these gloves sufficient to protect my hands from all risk? Don t limit your thoughts on hand injury risk to just impact, cutting, and trapping scenarios. Think also about burns from chemicals, electricity and energy sources, plus other work activities. What hand injury examples can you share? Use your head to lead your hands, use your eyes to protect your fingers.

6 What have we learnt and what have we changed as a result of these incidents? Investigation demonstrates that Root Cause is in most cases, a combination of equipment and behaviour, with a lack of attention to LMRA (Last Minute Risk Assessment) I have done this many times before and not been cut! I didn t see the sharp edges! I didn t think it was a risky activity! Clearly complacency regarding the risk to hands. As a result CBRE have investigated these incidents and shared the details. Additionally we have reinforced the Think All Times message; reviewed and changed glove rating where appropriate, and sought assurance that the learning and actions are applied. Make sure you do the same and share the Hands Safety message. Hand safety it s in the palm of your hands

7 Why you should think about protecting your hands! CBRE will be sharing, via the Safety Passport, an link to an excellent Hands Safety video which, through images alone, reinforces the message of why protecting your hands is so important. This will be in Safety Passport holders mail box, during the week commencing 7 th December. Don t put your hands into the Line of Fire, it will save your fingers
