1 IB FFO PPO he latest range of ariable ffort upports has been designed to cater for the ever creasg space limitations on Offshore igs and other process plants and also to enable the units to be fished either a galvanised or protective pat fish at mimum cost, allowg full assembly without damagg such fishes. PPICION ariable ffort upports are used to support the weight of pipework or equipment whilst allowg a degree of movement relative to the supportg structure. Where pipes transport hot (or cold) liquids or gases they expand (or contract) due to the difference between operatg and ambient temperatures. It is necessary to support the pipe operatg and ambient conditions, whilst permittg movement between the two. ariable ffort upports may also be needed to cater for ambient temperature variation local to items of plant or long vertical pipe runs, or where pipes pass between buildgs that may be subject to relative movement due to subsidence or earthquake. oad ange We offer a wide range of variable effort supports caterg for loads from 7.5 to Our standard range of variable supports offers 5 travel ranges over 29 sprg sizes enablg the engeer to optimise his selection of sprg stiffness givg the lowest possible variability. Our High-load range of variable supports caters for situations where high load carryg capacity and compact design is required. We offer 3 travel ranges (1 to 3) over 7 sprg sizes caterg for loads from to Most of these sprg sizes are available the followg configurations. WOKIN N ` ` hese figures represent the total workg travel available from each range however it should be noted that the allowable deviation will restrict the amount of the full travel range that can be used. he lower the allowable variability the less available travel will be useable. prg tiffness he stiffness of the sprg is a function of the load range and travel range with the shorter travel ranges usg the stiffer sprgs. prg stiffness has a direct relationship to variability, also referred to as allowable deviation. ariability is the measure of the variance supportg effort either the cold or the hot condition when compared with the design load. he ideal pipe supportg system will exert no additional force on the pipe and will therefore be made up of entirely constant effort supports. his would be a very costly and efficient solution. he most cost effective solution is that which utilises 100% of the available stress capacity of the pipe and combes rigid hangers, variable effort supports and constant effort supports to deliver this optimum solution. Because we offer the engeer 166 possible sprg sizes over a wide range of workg loads it is possible to select the ideal sprg rate and create the optimum pipe supportg solution that mimises the need for constant effort supports. he critical factor specifyg variable effort supports is the allowable variability. he engeer should work towards maximisg variability with the specified limit thereby makg use of the maximum stress capacity of the pipe and achievg the most cost effective hanger solution. PPO YP 1, 2, 3 D BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4 op uspended op djustable xtended upport Double upport Base Mounted D PCIFICION Our ariable ffort upports are designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of the followg specifications: N13480 NI/M B31.1 NI/M B31.3 NI/M P-58 NI/M P-69 INION ND CION ypes 1, 2, 3, and ift the support carefully to position and secure to the hanger rod for type 1, to the beam attachment with a suspension bolt or clevis p for types 2 and 3 or to the support beams for types and. Make the connection to the pipework via the hanger rod and pipe clip. pply tension to the sprg unit by rotatg the turnbuckle (or adjustg nut for type ). When the preset load is attaed, the lockg nuts above the sprg plate will become free to rotate. he lockg nuts beneath the sprg plate are then ready to carry any hydrostatic test load. On completion of hydrostatic testg, laggg, etc. the lockg nuts must be fully withdrawn from the sprg plate to the unlocked position (see diagram page 174). ype D he procedure is similar to the above except that the sprg canister is verted and application of the load will release the lockg nuts below the sprg plate, with nuts above the sprg plate carryg the hydrostatic test load, etc. ypes BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4 For these supports the load is transferred to the support by rotation of the height adjustment nut, which is situated below the load pad, rather than via a turnbuckle. hen proceed as for 1, etc. MINNNC ariable ffort upports are designed to be matenance free. On no account should any attempt be made to remove the sprg coil from the canister, sce it has been pre-compressed. Periodic spection should be carried out at a frequency which suits the environment which they are used. Check for visual damage, for any corrosion (especially of the sprg coil and threaded rods) and to ensure that no debris has fallen to the support which could impede the movement of the sprg. more detailed erection and matenance procedure is available upon request. 173

2 IB FFO PPO NDD F ype 2 ype BM1 OCKD NOCKD 1. Compactness of units. Installed heights designed to mimum. 2. Preset and multi-lockg device, allowg unit to be supplied locked at its stalled load and ready to accept a test load of at least twice the rated load. he fitely adjustable multi-lock is permanently fixed to the unit, allowg re-lockg at any travel position. his is of particular benefit at times of plant outages or durg pipework matenance/spection. 3. Overtravel is provided on either side of the workg range. 4. upports are fitted with staless steel nameplates marked with the stalled and operatg load, support reference mark, type and unique serial number. 5. ariable effort supports are supplied as standard with plastic coated sprg coils and hot-dipped galvanised casgs and threaded items. OPION F OCKD NOCKD WIH IMI OP 1. imit tops. he preset/multilock facility may be enhanced to precisely limit sprg travel. dditional nuts welded position are used to limit movement to a specified amount. 2. he construction of our variable effort supports makes the application of special pat fishes a simple matter. 3. For low temperature applications suitable grades of carbon steel are used to suit the specified temperature range. Where necessary the material used for sprg coils is also changed to an appropriate grade of steel. 4. For extreme corrosive condition extra-thick body section can be supplied. 5. For extended life offshore or other situations subject to highly corrosive conditions, supports are available various grades of staless steel with the sprg coil from 17/4 PH (precipitation hardened) staless steel. Please check with our design department for dimensional formation. 6. In Cryogenic applications supports are available manufactured entirely austenitic staless steel. Please check with our design department for dimensional formation. 7. For type BM1 upports, where lateral loadg greater than 25% of the maximum operatg load is envisaged, PF covered load pads should be specified. 174

3 IB FFO PPO CION election of ariable ffort upports can either be done manually from the catalogue as described below, or by usg computer software that is available from our sales department. CION FOM H CO oad charts are on page 177 and 188 and can be opened out and used at the same time as dimensional charts for the units beg selected. ange: he choice of range 1 to 5 will depend upon the movement at the support position and the allowable change effort. Change effort = movement x prg ate his often expressed as a percentage of operatg load. Movement x prg ate ariation effort = x 100% Operatg oad his variation is usually limited to 25% although greater variation is sometimes specified where a higher sprg rate is justified the pipework analysis, or lesser when supportg critical items. For guidance only on selectg the travel range, movements of 0.6, 1.19, 2.37, 3.55 and 4.73 will produce variations effort of approximately 25% of mid table load on ranges 1 to 5 respectively. PPO I election of support size is determed usg the selection charts KIP or which are located on fold out page 177 and 188. CION POCD 1. Determe the required supportg effort and pipe movement (up or down) stalled to operatg. Weights of spreader beams, heavy pipe clamps, etc. should be added to the pipe load. 2. stimate which travel range will be required. (ee above). 3. elect the smallest sprg size which has the operatg load with the workg travel. 4. nsure the sprg selected can accommodate the preset to operatg travel with the workg range. his is done by movg up and down the chart from the operatg load by the amount of the travel. Down if the movement stalled to operatg is up, and up if the movement stalled to operatg is down. 5. If the sprg selected can not accommodate the movement try a larger sprg size or the next travel range. If the movement can not be accommodated by 5 range then a constant effort support is required. 6. Check the variation supportg effort for the selected sprg Movement x prg ate ariation = x 100% Operatg oad If this exceeds the allowable variation then choose the next travel range and go back to 3 above. If the variation is less than half of the allowable then a smaller travel range may be acceptable. Choose a smaller travel range and go back to tep 4. If the variation exceeds the allowable for a 5 selection then a constant effort support is required. YP Determe the type of unit required, i.e. 1, 2, 3,,, D, BM1, BM2, BM3 or BM4. election will depend upon the location of steelwork/concrete and available space. Once the travel range, sprg size and type have been selected the descriptions can be written, i.e. 1-18BMI. CCION OF IND DIMNION he or rod take out dimension for 1, 2, 3 and D units and dimension for, and BM supports tabulated are dimensions at mimum load, i.e. at the start of the workg range. In order to determe stalled dimensions carry out the calculations below: a) Installed oad = Operatg oad + (Movement x prg ate) for stalled to operatg movement up. b) Installed oad = Operatg oad - (Movement x prg ate) for stalled to operatg movement down. prg Displacement at Installed oad = Installed oad - Mimum oad (mm) prg ate Installed Dimension =..O. + prg Displacement at Installed oad (1, 2, 3 and D units). Installed Dimension = - prg Displacement at Installed oad (, and BM units).
