Emergency evacuation due to fire or bomb alert. of road accident of slipping / falling of being left in building during major emergency e.g. fire Teachers and school staff should warn pupils + adults of nature of hazard and to walk across car park and along pavement in controlled manner. Sample RA sent to schools Warning school groups of hazard and advising them to hold onto the railing. Ensuring that groups use stairs or walk in the yard in a controlled manner Museum staff must be fully conversant with emergency procedures and will take action in the event of a major emergency such as a fire. If left without museum staff, eg lunchtime, school staff will be instructed in the evacuation procedure. They will be shown the emergency exits. Peanut allergy Flower makers use oil, students in workshop visitors Museum buys oil which does not contain nut oil, or warnings that it is made in a factory which processes nuts. 3 Ingestion of clay or decorating materials Workshops and tour Use of heavy equipment Bowl and mask making workshops taking part if they have a nut allergy. Nut allergic people will be told we have minimised risk but will need to be own decision. Children Clay and paints used are non-toxic but consumption should be discouraged. Children should be participants Heavy moulds may be dropped on feet causing bruising monitored by school staff Tables laid out by tutor with materials Participants are asked to leave moulds on table and the tutor will come to them to remove the clay. Temporary protective flooring in tile gallery Hare and Tortoise workshop. Equipment Electric pencil sharpener Hazard when in operation. Damaging fingers. Potter s tools of cutting, stabbing Turning tools, knives, clay cutting wires, scrapers. And potential to get hidden in clay. Clay workshops participants and visitors. Trip hazard from protective matting may result in fall Children using Top Floor Education Space workshop participants Workshop leader to ensure that matting is flush with carpet. Signs to be placed at gallery entrance to warn of trip hazard To be used by adults only. Workshop staff to put sharpener into cupboard when not in use Sharp tools only to be used by tutor or adults. Staff will draw attention to sharp edges and point out safe handling during workshop. Children should only use plastic or wooden clay tools. The level of risk is calculated by: The likelihood x The rating: 1- Very unlikely 2- Unlikely 3- Fairly likely 4- Likely 5- Very likely 1- Insignificant (no injury) 2- Minor (minor injury needing first aid) 3- Moderate (up to 3 days absence) 4- Major (more than 3 days absence) 5- Catastrophic (death) 1 4 Low (acceptable) No further action required 5 9 Medium (adequate) If risk cannot be lowered any further, consider risk against benefit. Monitor and look to improve at next review High (tolerable) Identify further control measures to reduce risk rating. Seek further advice e.g. line manager, H&S team, etc Very High (unacceptable) Do not undertake the activity.
