2 Key Safety Acts Complete a 5 Step prior to commencing any work Gloves shall be worn for all manual tasks Always use correct manual handling techniques Maintain good housekeeping at all times. 3 Shall - the instruction is compulsory. Should - the instruction is preferred but allows for initiative to be exercised. A JHA should be written for any variation in procedure or for the control of any new hazards that are identified. Correct manual handling technique: Utilise suitable Personnel appropriate for the task- consider age, special skills, capabilities and knowledge. Determine a lifting leader who will provide verbal instructions during the manual handling task. Definitions Ensure all Personnel involved are warm and stretched prior to undertaking any manual handling tasks. Ensure lifting point, path and set down points are free from obstacles and that the floor surfaces are not slippery. Remember to keep your spine in a neutral posture throughout the manual handling task. Consider the use of any manual handling aids, such as trolleys or hoists to minimize the weight lifted by Personnel. Avoid jerky movements, side bending or twisting during the manual handling process. Ensure the load is kept as close to the body as possible with the load sustained below your shoulders but above your mid-thigh. 4 PPE PPE requirements for this task are: High visibility reflective long sleeved shirt Long pants Safety glasses Cut level 3 gloves Safety boots Hard hat Full face respirator Tyvek suit Take 5 Complete a Take 5 prior to commencing any task or change in environment. 5 Select an IBC that s in good condition Cut the top off the IBC (PTES_HSE_SWP_015 Cutting 1000Litre Pods Safe Work Procedure) Slips, trip and falls Maintain housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings at all times. Fill the IBC with ¾ water Barricade work area (cones) Personal Injury Use correct manual handling techniques at all times. Ensure the correct PPE is worn. Preparation of IBC IBC ¾ water Cuts and Abrasions Wear the correct PPE (gloves). Cut away from the body. Keep hands clear of the blade. Inhaling plastic particles P1 dust mask Slips, Trips and Falls Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. 6 Select fire extinguisher Remove the safety pin Powder inhalation Ensure full face respirator and Tyvek suit is worn. Barricade work area. Slips Trips and falls Ensure ground is clear, even and stable. Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Decanting Fire Extinguisher Remove Pin Personal Injury Always wear appropriate PPE, including full face respirator and Tyvek suit. Use correct manual handling techniques at all times. Place the discharge nozzle 200mm under the water Cuts and Abrasions Be aware of sharp edges on IBC. Gently squeeze the trigger ensuring the nozzle is facing downward in the water Hold position until contents is emptied Powder in eyes Full face respirator and Tyvek suit. 7 Discharge 200 mm under water Ensure ALL the pressure is released from the extinguisher Powder inhalation Ensure full face respirator and Tyvek suit is worn at all times. Barricade work area Removing the pressure releasing unit Place the extinguisher on the ground Kneel down Hold the extinguisher with one hand, with the other hand tap the nozzle side of the pressure releasing unit with a plastic mallet to loosen (anti clockwise), shifter may be needed depending on extinguisher type. A filter strap can be used to secure the extinguisher canister. Slips Trips and falls Personal Injury Ensure ground is clear, even and stable. Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Always wear appropriate PPE, including full face respirator and Tyvek suit. Use correct manual handling techniques at all times. 8 Cuts and Abrasions Be aware of sharp edges on IBC Powder in eyes Safety glasses, Pressurized cylinder Do not remove pressure releasing unit until pressure has been released Tap with plastic mallet Stand the extinguisher up and unscrew with two hands Pinch points Correct manual handling. Gloves. Correct tool for the job (plastic mallet, shifter and filter strap) Unscrew pressure releasing unit Place the pressure releasing unit in the general waste bin PTES_HSE_SWP_038 Processing Fire Extinguishers Safe Work Procedure Rev 1 21/09/2015 Page 8 of 11
9 Powder inhalation Ensure full face respirator and Tyvek suit is worn at all times Using a pouring action and with the pressure releasing unit removed empty the remaining contents into an IBC Continue until canister is empty Slips Trips and falls Clear area of any trip hazard and Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings. Empty remaining contents and dispose of extinguisher canister Personal Injury Use correct manual handling techniques at all times. Ensure the correct PPE is worn. Pour out remaining powder Cuts and Abrasions Be aware of sharp edges on IBC Once empty place extinguisher canister into a scrap metal bin Powder in eyes Full face respirator PTES_HSE_SWP_038 Processing Fire Extinguishers Safe Work Procedure Rev 1 21/09/2015 Page 9 of 11
10 Continue the decanting process until the IBC is full with powder Slips Trips and falls Ensure ground is clear, even and stable. Maintain good housekeeping at all times. Personal Injury Always wear appropriate PPE, including full face respirator and Tyvek suit. Use correct manual handling techniques at all times. Drain the water from the bottom of the IBC using the IBC ball valve Cuts and Abrasions Be aware of sharp edges on IBC Disposing of powder and IBC People and Traffic, collision Use correct horn signals to initiate movement and use radio communication when necessary. Lights and beacon. Drain water before disposal Pinch Points Take care when opening/closing doors. Wear gloves. Leave the sludge to dry Environmental Only drain clean water from the IBC Using the forks on either Manitou or IT loader dispose of the IBC and material to landfill (PTES_HSE_SWP_020 Telehandler Safe Work Procedure) or (PTES_HSE_SWP_029 Front End Loader Safe Work Procedure) Roll over ROPS.
