3 3 The start of the 2013/14 ski season is right around the corner. The snow will be piling up in the mountains and the resorts will soon be open. Think safety and always ski or board with a helmet on. Are you ready? Is your equipment ready? Need new equipment or need to upgrade your old equipment? Our annual Ski Sale and Fest will take place on November 8-10, Have any used equipment you want to sell, bring it to the Depot on November 7-8, This summer has been hotter and drier than normal. Hopefully, we will make up for the lack of precipitation with an above normal snowfall this winner. Think Snow! This year, we have kept all your favorite ski trips, and added a new trip to Galena Lodge for the x-country, snowshoe, or backcountry skier. Don t forget to attend the Avalanche Awareness night in December and if you plan any backcountry activity then consider the Avalanche Level 1 training course. Many of these trips have limited space, so if you are thinking of going on a specific trip I recommend signing up early. Many people missed out on trips last year because they waited too long and could not sign up. IFSC PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Donald Rasch The voucher program for Jackson Hole remains the same this year, that is, you need to buy a voucher before heading to Jackson. However, Jackson will be implementing the J card along with your voucher. For details see the How the Vouchers work section on page 15. Grand Targhee has changed to a bar code that you will find on your membership card. This eliminated the need to buy a voucher before heading to Targhee. As a member of the IFSC you are automatically a member of both the Intermountain Ski Council (ISC) and the Far West Ski Association (FWSA). Both of these organizations offer discount trips and other discounts to resorts throughout the west. Visit their web sites for details. If you have time and want to volunteer to help the Ski Club, just talk to any Board member, we can always use more volunteers. Also, if you have any ideas for how we can improve the Ski Club, please pass those suggestions on to a Board member. Your Idaho Falls Ski Club (IFSC) membership automatically includes membership to both the ISC and the FWSA. By IFSC becoming a membership organization with these other organizations, the IFSC members have other options for travel, lodging, resort discounts. The ISC is running a trip to Jackson Hole in early March and has additional discounts at Snowbasin and Solitude resorts. Check out the ISC web site at for details. FWSA is running trips to Beaver Creek, Whislter/Blackcomb, Whitefish, plus international trips to Switzerland and France. Additional discounts are available at Brundage Mountain and lodging discounts around Lake Tahoe, Jackson Hole, and more. Check out their web site at for details. Last Year, IFSC won three awards from the FWSA for second place Best Ski Club, second place Best Web Site, and third place for Best Newsletter. Congratulations to Karin Brown, Bev Novak, and Debbie Rasch for all their hard work to earn these awards. For details on the awards, visit the FWSA web site. Idaho Falls Ski Club Your 2013/14 Winter Guide To Club Activities Debbie Rasch, newsletter editor This November issue of the Newsletter has everything you will need to plan for this season of great skiing. Please keep your copy in a safe place so that you will have the information of all the trips and parties as well as where to get lift tickets and much more. Also it will be on our web page at which you will want to check for updates or any changes to schedules. I will be on the slopes this year with my camera as usual so come over and say hello. I would like to take your picture to put in the next newsletter or if you have a photo you would like to share from one of our ski club trips send it to me at skibiz@ida.net The next newsletter will be electronic version, sometime in January 2014 so don t forget to give us your address when signing up for your membership and we will it to you.

4 4 In the 1950 s, local residents of Idaho Falls came together to form the Idaho Falls Ski Club (IFSC). Over these many years the IFSC went through many evolutions, but the main goal remained throughout, which was to promote the sports of Alpine and Nordic skiing and to make it affordable to everyone, especially for families. This became the founding principle in the IFSC Mission statement. The IFSC has been successful all these years by staying true to our mission, values and not straying from our goal. The IFSC had as few as several hundred members in the early years to over 5,000 members in the years around Today, our membership has stayed fairly steady at around 2000 members. The central activities of the IFSC revolve around three main functions: ski trips, maintain a Nordic ski area, and providing discount lift tickets. IFSC provides both Nordic and Alpine trips, mostly to local areas, but we do run an annual trip to Europe. On occasion, we have run trips to other areas in North America and to New Zealand. All the trips have substantial discounts and all the trip coordinators must follow the IFSC Trip Policy. Our Nordic Area is open to the public. In an agreement with the county, forest service, and a local ski area, we were granted approval to oversee the grooming of trails and maintenance of two warming huts. We work closely with local ski areas to get discount lift tickets all season long for our members to ski whenever they chose. The IFSC is always promoting safety in the sports of Alpine and Nordic skiing. In the past couple years, we focused on equipment selection and care, holding demonstrations for members on the proper way to maintain, care for, and store equipment. Recently, we are focusing on two particular items: use of helmets and avalanche awareness. To help prevent head injury, we promote the use of helmets for Alpine skiing and Snowboarding. Our web site and newsletter have carried articles on the use of and the selection of helmets. We have had representatives of the local ski team at our Ski Sale and Festival, to provide information on the selection of helmets and equipment. With the increase access and better equipment for people to enter the backcountry, IFSC is taking the knowledge of avalanche awareness very seriously. Over 20 people have been killed this year by avalanches in the Rockies, which is why we make our avalanche awareness course free and open to the public. We also provide level one avalanche training to our members at a discount through the American Avalanche Institute. The knowledge of what can trigger an avalanche is critical information for anyone entering the backcountry and IFSC wants to make that information available. IFSC supports many local groups throughout the year. The Kelly Canyon Ski Team (KCST) is a closely aligned but separate organization. KCST mission is to help youth develop both skiing skills and to learn all the aspects of ski racing. IFSC provides financial support, equipment for sale events and volunteers to help with races, such as the Wes Deist Memorial Slalom. KCST provides fall training camps that are open to any IFSC member that wishes to get into shape for the upcoming ski season. The IFSC provide funds to Idaho Falls School District 91 and 93 to allow students, which do not have the means, to experience Alpine skiing. We have been providing this assistance for many years and will continue into the future. This year, IFSC learned that one of the lift operators at a local ski area was diagnosed with cancer. IFSC was quick to support and provide funds at the fund raiser for this individual. We all wish him the best every time we see him at the resort. IFSC provide funds in memory of Wray Landon, a club member that was killed in an avalanche while skiing the South Teton 4 years ago. IFSC provides support to the Kelly Canyon Ski Patrol and the Idaho Falls Nordic Ski Patrol through the promotions and advertising of their fund raising events and providing them access and tables to our annual Ski Sale and Festival. Many of the patrollers are members of IFSC. IFSC works with the local resorts to promote the local skier. Our local areas are seeing the true value of the local skier, especially with the tough economics the country has faced over the last couple years. We work with them to provide discount lessons, where we have had over 300 members attend on a weekend. This was a financial benefit to the

5 5 resorts since IFSC subsidizes these lessons, and children get the lessons for only $5.00. New for the ski season, IFSC has elected a Member Benefit Director position. The Director is to follow the IFSC Benefits Policy, which states that items to be presented to the members will have a substantial discount (usually 20 to 25%) from any normally discounted price. The Benefits Director oversees the development and printing of the discount cards, which contains resort specials, equipment repairs and rentals, lodging, and food items. This follows closely to our Discount Lift Ticket Policy that we used with the local resorts to provide discounted lift tickets to our members. Our web site received the award for Best Web Site from the Far West Ski Association (FWSA) in 2011 and our Newsletter received second place for Wentworth Outstanding Newsletter in 2009 and IFSC promotes the FWSA and the Intermountain Ski Counsel (ISC) by listing FWSA and ISC trips and events on the web site and the newsletter. There is a special table and display at the annual Ski Sale and Festival to make IFSC members aware of the activities, events and benefits from being members of the FWSA and ISC. For the upcoming FWSA convention in June 2012, IFSC has provided our members with a list of volunteers needed on our web page. The IFSC will vote on further support for the convention in May 2012, when the new Board of Directors takes over. IFSC provide representatives to the ISC and participates in ISC Board meetings. This is a chance for the members to renew their memberships and for new members to learn about IFSC. The Festival is a party held at the Ski Sale to welcome the many Resort representatives that attend, Directors and coaches from the KCST, and IFSC Board members a chance to discuss the upcoming seasons and changes in activities. The Spring Party is the end of ski season and award event. The IFSC Mission Statement is found in the By-Laws. Since the IFSC is a non-profit organization within the State of Idaho, IFSC is only required to have a set of By-Laws to function. However, in today s world, that is not enough. Therefore, we have Policy and Procedures that fills in the gaps and to protect the Board and Members. These documents are available to all members on our web site. Our By-Laws require that IFSC have an external audit/evaluation annually, which is conducted every spring. IFSC is insured for several items: equipment used to groom the Kelly Canyon Nordic Area, Board Members that handle money (for the Board on any loses), trip insurance for the Board (to cover law suits from accidents that may occur on a trip). All the current IFSC Board Directors contact information is found on the IFSC web site or in the newsletter. With everything that IFSC does and provides for our members, IFSC has been able to keep our membership fees at $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for juniors for the past 7 years. By Don Rasch, President IFSC has two categories of awards, Service Awards and Members Appreciation Awards. The Service Awards are for members that have supported IFSC for many years in critical areas, such as Board positions or critical functions at the annual Ski Sale and Festival. This award has three levels, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The selection committee is made up of Platinum award winners and the Club President. The Member Appreciation award is provided to volunteers for their exceptional work. The President selects a special awards committee to review candidates and make a selection. All committees follow the IFSC Awards Policy in making their selection. The awards are presented at the IFSC Spring Social, which is in April every year. IFSC has three Social events every year: Falls Kickoff Party, Festival at the Ski Sale and Festival, and the Spring Party. The Falls Kickoff Party is held in October and geared to getting members excited about the upcoming ski season.

JH has the reputation of being an expert area; however, if you are not into the steep, don't let that deter you. JH is big; 2500 acres with 50% expert terrain, 4100 vertical feet, 116 named runs. That leaves over 1000 acres rated intermediate and 300 acres of beginner terrain. Furthermore, their grooming of intermediate and beginner terrain is excellent; so, regardless of your skiing level, you will enjoy the JH ski Area Mountains. We again will be staying at the Antler Motel, just off the square in Jackson. You may stay both Friday and Saturday night or just one night. The Antler will once again host their fantastic Elk BBQ on Saturday evening preceded by a wine and cheese party hosted by the Ski Club beginning at 6:30 PM. Both are included in the lodging price. Also, after a day of skiing, the Olympic size hot tub at the hotel is a must. So don t forget your bathing suit. Remember, if you are going to ski JH, be sure to purchase your discount lift ticket vouchers in Idaho Falls and have your IFSC membership card and picture ID with you to redeem your voucher at the ski area. Jackson is committed to helping you spend more time skiing than riding the lift. The Casper chairlift converted to a detachable quad last year; cutting the ride time from 10 minutes to 3.5 minutes. And, in case you missed it last year, the new Marmot double chairlift takes skiers from South Pass Traverse (below the Thunder lift station) 1200 vertical feet to the top of the 7 Gondola. This will really improve the cycle time for those skiing the mid and upper mountain. For those venturing to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain; the 3 year old aerial tram Big Red is twice as large (capacity 100) as the old tram, and 20% faster (9 minutes). 14 December 9, 2013, (Monday, 7 9 PM) Taylorview Junior High School auditorium This presentation is free and open to the public. The Idaho Falls Ski Club, The American Avalanche Institute, and Wray and Lani Landon will be presenting the 5 th Annual Avalanche Awareness Night. The presentation covers material that is important to anyone considering venturing into the winter backcountry. It also provides excellent refresher material for experienced backcountry users. Content includes: Fundamentals of snowpack, weather, and terrain Avalanche forecast bulletins Backcountry decision-making basics Current season snowpack overview A wonderful assortment of door prizes will be given away following the presentation. If you have any questions, please call Wray or Lani Landon at th Annual Avalanche Awareness Night By Don Rasch Sun Valley weekend 2013 Eighty six Club members drove to Sun Valley in March 2013 for the annual spring weekend trip. Many members took advantage of the options to extend their stay for additional days of skiing. Many of the local merchants provided discounts to those that shopped in their business. Sun Valley provided a condo option this year which allowed several families to stay together. Most members stay in either the Sun Valley Inn or the World Renowned Sun Valley Lodge. Both have huge outside hot pools, along with a bowling alley and an outdoor ice rink. All facilities provide free bus service to the slopes at either Dollar Mountain or Baldy Mountain with its approximately 3300 vertical feet of skiing. High speed lifts keep the lift lines short or non-existing. Sun Valley has the best snow making system in the west and the groomers are kept in excellent shape. For the more aggressive skier there are the bowls, tree skiing off the Fire Road, and several hidden powder stashes between many of the groomed runs, if you know where to look. Free ski storage was provided at the River Run, but the boot storage came with a charge that included drying and heating. For the third year in a row, demo-days was taking place at River Run and then at Warm Springs. This allowed skiers to try different skis and boots over the two day weekend. These free demo-days are great for testing new equipment. Dollar Mountain has a very demanding terrain park and was holding ski-cross races over the weekend. The world s top ski-cross athletes were competing. You could ski Dollar Mountain, watch the races, and talk with the athletes on the lifts between races. For après ski, bands played at both River Run and Warm Spring areas in the afternoon, giving a chance to unwind. Several lucky Club members received free merchandise from the trip host when spotted wearing an orange bandana on the slopes. One group of young ladies are all sporting new sunglasses, while other members received chocolate bars, sun screen, bandanas, etc. We will be doing this again this coming year. Ski Magazine ranks Sun Valley as the number 4 resort in the west, behind Jackson Hole, Deer Valley, and Vail, which says a lots about this trip and this resort.
