Coordinator: Maureen Finnerty (208) Great Local Cross Country Areas If you re just getting into cross-country skiing or new to the area, we have recommendations on great Nordic areas within about 1.5 hours drive from Idaho Falls. These are areas that groom or set track, which includes classic (diagonal stride) and often skate track, which means you can go FAST! Of course, if you just want to get out and plod around on your skis, you can go anywhere there is snow, one of the great advantages of cross-country skiing. Here are our picks nearest to farthest (from Idaho Falls): Kelly Canyon -- Caribou Targhee National Forest Up Forest Road 218 beyond the resort. IFSC and the US Forest Service collaborate on weekly grooming (classic and skate) on several roads and trails that take you into very cool non-motorized pristine backcountry. IFSC also operates two warming huts up these FS roads at Morgan Summit and Kelly Mountain (see Huts article), the latter of which can be booked on-line for overnight stays. $5 parking permit (through the resort), free skiing on your public lands compliments of USFS Palisades Ranger District and IFSC. Teton Valley (Victor-Driggs area) The Teton Valley Trails and Pathways (TVTAP) organization and the USFS Teton Basin Ranger District have gone nuts over the last 10 years developing a truly world-class Nordic ski region. Free, but support the cause with a $10/day or $50/season TVTAP donation! 12 Become a Trip Coordinator! Do you have some ideas for where we should go or what we should do? We are always looking for new ideas and volunteers to help bring these wonderful sports to the larger community. IFSC trips are coordinated by volunteer members. Any member of the Idaho Falls Ski Club may coordinate a ski trip. Being a coordinator is a very rewarding job, but takes some time organize. Any member wanting to run a trip, either alpine or nordic, should contact the Alpine or Nordic Director to discuss the details. Coordinating arrangements would include transporation to and from the area and any overnight accommodations. The trip coordinator is responsible for arranging lift tickets and lodging at a discounted rate and makes arrangements for food and beverage. Last but not least, the coordinator is the main point of contact for the group and makes sure everyone has a great time! Upon approval by the Director, IFSC reimburses any costs for the trip that are not paid directly by members. A post trip report (including financial information) is required. If you enjoy helping to set up events, large or small, you should consider being a trip coordinator! It isn't too late to add a trip for this year, we are always looking at new opportunities, because hey, you never know where the POW will hit! We have so many wonderful places to ski in our backyard, but need help making the arrangements to get there. Far West Ski Association & Intermountain Ski Council All IFSC members are also member of the Intermountain Ski Council (ISC) and the Far West Ski Association (FWSA). These organizations provide a government body for ski clubs throughout the Western US. They also provide wonderful opportunities to become more involved in ski club activities as well as other trips. Therefore, all IFSC members are eligible for all the benefits listed on their websites as well as all the trips sponsored by ISC and/or FWSA!
