2 Ski Trips. The Ski season is under way. The first trip of the season, which was to Snowshoe WV, as a great success. It would have been nice to have a little more snow, but the slopes were open and we all had a great time! If you have not signed up for a trip, it is not too late to get your name on the list. The club has five more trips scheduled to start the middle of January and run until the end of March. See the trip information that follow and sign up for your favorite trip(s).. I am looking for inputs from the club members on where YOU would like to see the Club run a trip in If you are a skier and have a suggestion, please me your input. I still need trip leaders for the 2009 ski year. The club needs your help in planning and running a trip in This can be a fun and rewarding opportunity. If you are interested in running a trip in 2009, please contact me.. Don t forget the Huntsville Ski Club is now a part of The Crescent Ski Council (CSC). If you are a member of the Huntsville Ski Club, you are a member of The Crescent Ski Council. The Council and other clubs of the Council also have many trips planned for this season. You can go on any of these trips as if you are a member of their Club. The Council also has racing events scheduled this ski season. See the Crescent Trips and affiliated club trips or go to the Crescent web page and check out all the Council events. Bob Breeden and I are the points of contact for the CSC, so if you have any questions about CSC let one of us know. 3 Crested Butte, Colorado January Elevation 12,162 Ft CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN RESORT is a different kind of place. As ski towns go, there s nowhere else like it, anywhere. It s not only the solitary beauty that sets the mountain apart, but also its very nature that speaks to the heart of the skier in you. Surrounded by National Forest land, Crested Butte is surrounded by spectacular panoramic views of the Elk Mountains, Ruby Range, West Elks and the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness. One of the main benefits of belonging to the CSC is that all members of the Huntsville Ski Club are now eligible to participate in other CSC clubs ski trips. Conversely, other CSC clubs members, numbering in excess of 6,000, are eligible to participate in the HSC trips. This adds much more flexibility in scheduling your ski vacation and potentially helps our trip leaders fill their billets. If you have not decided on a ski trip yet, check out the HSC Trips, the CSC Sponsored Trips, and the CSC Weekend Trips at Unfortunately, we have missed the deadline for signing up for the Steamboat Race and Ski Camp for this year, but think seriously about next year. This trip has been a standard for the CSC for many years and usually draws about 200 CSC members. Also, ski/snowboard racing (Slalom and Grand Slalom) and terrain park competition are high on the agenda of the CSC. If you are interested in participating in either of these activities please check out Included are the rules and schedules. You do not have to be a super stud to race. Races are mostly on weekends and at eastern slopes with the finals at SNOWSHOE/SILVER CREEK, March 7-9. HSC Contacts: Gene Hartsfield Bob Breeden Note: Patti Hill has volunteered to be the HSC Photo Coordinator. [What does that means?] HSC can start documenting, collecting, and sharing our good times. Please send e-photos to photo@huntsvilleskiclub.org of any past events so that we may share photos among all our friends. She is collecting any and all past event photos. Please provide photos with event, date, and names, if possible. All photos are welcome. Best photos are in jpeg format. Video clips welcome Page 5

EXERCISES TO PREPARE FOR SKI SEASON #16 Visit your local butcher and pay $30 to sit in the walk-in freezer for half an hour. Afterwards, burn two $50 bills to warm up. #15 Soak your gloves and store them in the freezer after every use. #14 Fasten a small, wide rubberband around the top half of your head before you go to bed at each night. #13 If you wear glasses, begin wearing them with glue smeared on the lenses. #12 Throw a hundred-dollar bill away now. #11 Find the nearest ice rink and walk across the ice 20 times in your ski boots carrying two pairs of skis, accessory bag and poles. Pretend you looking for your car. #10 Place a small angular pebble in your shoes, line them with crushed ice, and then tighten a C-clamp around your toes. (My Favorite) #9 Buy a new pair of gloves, and immediately throw one away. #8 Secure one of your ankles to a bedpost and ask a friend to run into you at high speed. #7 Go to McDonald s and insist on paying $6.50 for a hamburger. Be sure you in the longest line. #6 Clip a lift ticket to the zipper of your jacket and ride a motorcycle fast enough to make the ticket lacerate your face. #5 Drive slowly anywhere--as long as it s in a snowstorm and you re following an 18-wheeler. #4 Fill a blender with ice, hit the pulse button and let the spray blast your face. Leave the ice on your face until it melts. Let it drip into your clothes. #3 Dress up in as many clothes as you can and then proceed to take them off because you have to go to the bathroom. #2 Fill a bucket with ice. Hold hand in bucket until numb. Now slam your thumb in a car door. Don t go see a doctor. AND, the #1way to prepare for ski season is to repeat all of the above every Saturday and Sunday until it s time for the real thing. Page 8
