2 IN THIS ISSUE trips info Photos from the annual club picnic Our prez shows off his golf shorts View from the Sky Mel Crichton, Boomer editor As I sit here on the deck, the view of Lone Mountain reminds me of the Smoky Mountains, because we literally are in the SMOKY mountains. Wildfires are raging in the northern Rockies and further west in Washington and Oregon. So ridges and ranges fade into lighter shades of gray as they get farther away from us Fortunately, there are no fires nearby, and the smoke isn t causing breathing problems. yet. But it ll all blow away soon enough. That would be the highlight of the summer, except we are training a new puppy. Maggie is 5 months old, and she loves to chew everything she can reach. Today was the final straw, as she chewed my money clip (friends know it as a fat rubber band around my cash and credit cards). The AMEX card is a mangled shred of its former self, but I was able to recover 45 dollars in partial bills. However, there are not enough parts of the other bills to exchange at the bank for new ones. So I guess I ll follow Maggie around with a strainer and tweezers for a few days. Sign up for club trips early!!! A strong El Nino promises to make things interesting this winter. Mel PS the photo to the left was taken on July 28 at the top of Swiftcurrent chair at Big Sky.. Unfortunately it all melted in the next two days. (It s summer, ya know!) Jim Berlien goes for a bike ride Club meetings: Sept 10 at George s and Oct 22 open house at Sun Valley sports Please keep the club notified of any changes in address, phone, or . Marilyn Rader is our membership VP and would be happy to make these updates if you let her know... (rm.rader@sbcglobal.net or ). BLAST FROM THE PAST A couple of embarrassing photos from years gone by. Latest info is always on the club website

3 Don t miss the open house at Sun Valley Sports for Indy Ski Club on October 22. Beside a BRIEF club meeting there will likely be refreshments (adult and kiddie), munchies, and sale prices on new and close-out ski stuff. In the past there has been a boot fitting demo, followed by a flurry of boot purchases by club members. This meeting is a MUST.. SUN VALLEY SPORTS HAS THE LATEST IN SKIS & ACCESSORIES And Summer Outdoors, too (don t miss our ISC party and sale on October 22) Sun Valley Sports 8418 Castle Corner Dr Indianapolis, IN (317) Monday - Friday 11 am 8 pm Saturday 10 am-8 pm, Sunday noon 5 pm (ask for the ISC member discount on ski stuff) BOARD MEMBER BIO Didn t get any NEW member bios this month, so here s one of our more experienced board members. Lisa Sindelar Hi, My name is Lisa, I'm known for my love of yoga, red wine, and IndyCar racing, but not necessarily in that order! I'm told I'm one of the young kids in the club (only 46 yrs old), currently serving as Finance chair/audit committee and trip leader for Jackson Hole. I'm a sales/ district account manager, selling supplies to convenience stores (I'm responsible for the fancy soap dispensers in the Circle K restrooms). I also volunteer with Ohio Shorthair Rescue Group, fostering GSP dogs in the home, doing home visits, transporting shelter pups. We currently have 4 pups in the home (Beaker, Keegan, CiCi, Cooper), which means 2 walks a day, 2 pups at a time, and no issues reaching 10,000 steps a day! Lastly, I love all things local--dining at local restaurants, volunteering for local events, and repping Indy when I'm out of town! Office: Fax: Tom: Priscilla: Update your wardrobe Be Ski Club Proud! Our online ISC catalog includes coats, vests, shirts, bags and much, much more. All available with our regular block logo or our script logo. 6 Priscilla s Corner, Priscilla Johnson trips VP It s September and time to think snow and skiing! We listened to your comments from the electronic survey and tried to schedule trips you said you wanted. Obviously by the turnout at the picnic, we must have hit the nail on the head! Thank you for your enthusiasm for the 2016 ski trip list for the Indianapolis Ski Club. Telluride, Aspen, and Park City are currently taking names for wait lists. IF you want to be considered for those, fill out your application and send your deposit of $150 to the trip leader. Checks are held until you have a spot on the trip. The Vail trip, first opportunity of the season, is still available. Remember, that lift ticket includes Beaver Creek, Arrowhead and Bachelor Gulch also. The Vail Spa has a great outdoor hot tub and nice condos. There is bus service over to the Lionshead gondola if you don t want to walk. Vail is always super skiing and this is a great way to kick off the season. Dick Surber is the trip leader. Jackson Hole, led by Lisa Sindelar, is a kick back western town with fantastic skiing and has space available. I ve been told that the breakfast at the Parkway Inn is great! The airlines have made it difficult to find deals but our tour operator, Winter Ski & Sport, is doing a fantastic job of continuing to monitor changes in fares. Trip leaders will keep you posted on schedule and price changes if any come our way. TJ and I weren t at the picnic because we were exploring Greenland and the High Canadian Arctic looking for polar bears and communing with the whales. Sorry to miss you but hope to see you on the slopes. Priscilla I ve been looking at the forecasts for this ski season. Some NOAA folks say El Nino is gonna be a whopper this year, meaning better snow for the Sierras and maybe an end to the drought in California. That would be nice. It could mean great snow for Taos and Telluride, and sketchy snow for the Pacific northwest, but there s a lot of variables that might change that. The rest of the west should see near-average conditions. I can live with that. Whatever your ski destination, ski safe. And remember to lubricate. Or is that HYDRATE? I can t remember. Been lubricating all afternoon. Mel Cops Cycling for Survivors Foundation is a not-for-profit Indiana organization whose mission statement is to remember the survivors of police officers killed in the line of duty, and to remember and honor those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their respective communities and state. Each July since 2004, the Foundation undertakes a 13 day, nearly 1,000 mile bicycle ride around the state of Indiana to honor those officers and meet with survivors, friends, and volunteers that support the ride in the many communities it passes through. The ride was organized by policemen in 2004, and the cyclists are policemen, survivors, and friends of each. In order for each cyclist to participate, they must raise funds for each day of cycling. The money that is given to the Foundation from the many individuals, companies, churches, and other supporters is then granted to the various survivors in need, most often directed for educational purposes. This past July was my third time riding with the Cops ride, and I was one of the 54 riders who helped raise over $50, in Each year the ride has grown in the number of cyclists and also in the amount of money raised. Governor Mike Pence and his wife Karen supported the Foundation this year by riding the first leg of the journey from the Law Enforcement and Fire Fighter's Memorial in Indianapolis to the North Police Station. Additional information about the Cops Foundation can be found on their website: copscycling4survivors@comcast.net. Photos and videos from the 2015 ride have been posted. There s a listing of the donors that have sponsored each cyclist and survivors that have been granted benefits in past years. Information about the ride in July 2016 will be posted in March. 7 Ski Club Bikers by Ray Battey Here is a picture we took on a club ride Saturday August 22. We rode to Garfield Park, taking the Cultural Trail to the Pleasant Run Trail which terminates on its west end at the park. It was an easy 10 mile ride and, of course, we met for lunch and beers afterward. And here s our crew at James Whitcomb Riley s tomb atop Crown Hill cemetery, picture taken on our August 29 club ride. To join Indy riders on a future Saturday, contact ray at Rsbattey@aol.com MEMBER NOTES: I was looking thru the Sanctuary Ski Club web site and found this article that, while not perfect, was a decent description of ski boots and how to select them for one's own skiing level. To me it seems that too many people rely on a combination of what's comfortable in the shop and what some "kid" tells them they should wear. Go to uploads/2015/01/ski-boot-trends-and-anatomy.pdf. It's from the National Ski Council Federation 2014 Annual Meeting, and it's by Mr. Mike Whittaker. John O National Ski Council Federation offers great discounts on phones, lodging, rental cars, shipping services, hard and soft goods (skis and clothing), and much, much more!
