However, your trip captains are continuing to monitor the weather and trying to get a few more people signed up for the trips Wolf Creek is iffy because of the lack of snow We will be making a call on that trip on Monday, November 28. There is supposed to be snow Nov , perhaps 20" plus, so it is down to the wire. By the time you get The Babble you will have an from Warren so you will know. The hotels and bus company have been understanding, and are giving us as much leeway as they can. We need snow! We have had an excellent sign up for the Christmas party. All ski trips are a go as far as numbers of participants. We need Mother Nature to help a little more; and more of those Blazer snow dances. See you at the meetings! Winter VP Wayne G. Turner Beeps from the VEEP
The Prez Sez Hello, Blazers, We are officially in the Holiday season. I hope all of you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. It is nice to hear that the ski areas are opening and that real snow has been in the forecast. By the time you read this, a decision will have been made regarding the Wolf Creek weekend trip. Hopefully, this trip will run. We have enough people, just a lack of snow. For those of you unfamiliar with Wolf Creek, this is an area in which they can get dumped on in a short amount of time. Let s hope for a blizzard there. The Christmas Party is taking place at the El Paso Club this year on Dec. 7. All reservations should have been received by now. Get out your holiday dress and dancing shoes and plan on a wonderful evening with your fellow Blazers. This is a new venue for us but we will have our favorite DJ, Derek Gunn, once again spinning tunes for your listening enjoyment and dancing. In December we only have one meeting and that will be Dec 14. Gisele will give a short talk about her hike along the Colorado Trail this summer. I also learned that she just completed a hike in the Grand Canyon. I am sure there will be lots of questions for her. We will not have a meeting Dec. 21 or 28 due to the holidays. With the coming of 2017, it is not too soon to think about helping the ski club by being a board member. This is a volunteer club and needs your help. Let me know if you are interested in running for any board position President, Winter VP, Summer VP, Secretary, Treasurer. If I do not hear from anyone, you may be one I contact. Don t be shy. Wishing you a Merry Christmas. Claudia Quick Blazer Ski Club President

Help a Colorado Special Olympic family cheer on their son at the World Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. This is the oath all Special Olympic athletes recite prior to competition. Special Olympics, founded in the early 60 s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, with sports at the core, it has grown to be a movement that is not just about the largest disability population in the world, but about all of us. Sports is a universal language which unites people on and off the playing field, cutting across lines of race, ethnicity, education level, social status, and economic background. The Colorado Caribou is one of Colorado Springs Special Olympic winter sport teams that trains in alpine skiing and snowboarding. The team is comprised of athletes ranging in age and ability from novice to expert in both downhill and snowboard racing. This season Colorado Caribou athletes have been training at an indoor ski facility, Ski Maxx, owned and operated by Susie Cole. Ski Maxx has offered our athletes an excellent opportunity for strength and endurance training invaluable not only to our novice skiers and snowboarders but for our advanced athletes. The Colorado Caribou Ski and Snowboard team trains, January to March with a regional event this year at Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs, CO in February and state competition at Copper Mountain in March. GO TEAM COLORADO CARIBOU! We are excited to announce that one of the Colorado Caribou s very own, Vincent Egan, has been selected to represent team USA at the Special Olympic World Games in Austria this
March. Never in a million years could Vincent and his family have imagined that his dream would come true; it is a once-in- a- lifetime event. He was selected in a lottery among gold medalists in his division. This means that going once will almost always be his only opportunity. Athletes don t get to try to go back in four years because the experience is spread among many. There are coaches and chaperones from Special Olympics to ensure Vincent s safety and wellbeing but, family support is critical to accomplishment, especially for Vincent, who lives with an intellectual disability. This is Vincent s big day, but Special Olympics does not provide funds for family members. We are seeking support from the community to help fund travel for his family so they can be there to cheer for him. Donations will go toward travel expenses for Vincent s immediate family of seven. GoFundMe.com Search: Egan Family to Austria OR if you re inclined you may send a check to P.O. Box 38896, Colorado Springs, CO Attn,: Shelly Shepard (Checks can be made out to Vincent Egan).
From Marcia & Jerry Nolan: Bud Nott Jr. March 4, October 22, 2016 Edward C. Bud Nott, Jr. 84, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016 Long-time Blazer member and former Blazer s President, "Bud" Nott, passed away recently after a long illness. Whenever Bud was around, he added life and fun to the party. He was very active in Blazers, so we wanted to honor him with a few of our special memories. Memories of Bud Some of you may remember him from Blazers trips to Bud s Cabin, or from his planning the annual Tacky Party with such wacky themes as Fur or Rubber. He successfully ran the ski trip to Wolf Creek for several years and promoted it by using the same poster every year. He only changed the dates, and marked the trail map where skiers were injured each year! On my first trip to Wolf Creek, Marcia fell and broke her arm. The only way to get her to the emergency room, 75 miles away, was on our motor coach. Several people objected because they were worried that the bus wouldn t be back in time to take them to our hotel in South Fork. They actually wanted to vote on it! Bud was in charge and commanded the bus driver to take her to the ER! He later pointed out that for a trip captain, If you put a decision to a vote, you have automatically pissed off 40% of the people. Things were always lively when Bud was around. On the Blazers trip to Leadville one year we had to walk through the lobby of the Delaware Hotel to get to the hot tub. As Jerry was going through the lobby, Bud came up behind him and tugged on his swimsuit. To Jerry s horror and embarrassment, his swimsuit dropped to the floor..in front of a lobby full of Blazers!! We can't forget the Chili Cook-Off at Shavano Campground. Frieda always had a great chili which frequently won or placed in the contest. But, Bud's "Spit Bucket Chili" only got one vote..his! From Deb & Doug Thomas: We went mountain biking with Bud up the Jeep trail to the lakes above Shavano Campground. This is a very steep and rough 6 miles, but even though Bud was quite a bit older than us, he was able to keep up. From Verla & Tom Rehorst: And, there was the bike ride to Penrose. We started at Albertson s on Hwy 115 & Cheyenne Mtn. Blvd. Biking down 115 was fairly easy, but just south of Ft. Carson there was a STEEP HILL that Bud dubbed Red Ass Hill. Some of us who weren t quite as energetic, or didn t feel like pushing our bikes uphill, joined the ride at the top of the hill. Whether we biked the entire 30
miles to Penrose, or hitched a ride in the sag wagon, we were refreshed and re-energized with lunch at Mr. C s in Penrose. Diane & Harry Gardner: He was always fun to be with and was happy to give fellow Blazers pointers on anything from skiing powder to mountain biking. From Trish & Ken Wrightsman: We first really met Bud on our first ski trip and it was to Wolf Creek! He took us under his wing and made sure that we had fun, and we did!! Our first trip to Mexico was with Bud and Frieda. It was an all-inclusive that included golf. So Bud had decided to clean out his golf bag of all old golf balls and brought only new ones. On the first hole of our first round, Bud drove a ball into the jungle. Needless to say, he did not retrieve it. Later in the round another new ball goes into the jungle. After about 12 holes or so, locals came out of the jungle to sell us balls that they had found and we all needed several. Bud was the only one that bought one of his own balls back!! For non-golfers, we mark our balls to know which one belongs to whom!! And the Tacky parties..there was always a contest and we thought Bud had it rigged!! One year there was the ugly feet contest and Bud won. Ken was ticked because he has really ugly feet, too!!! But it was a fair vote and Bud won the used Bowling Trophy. Yup, a Goodwill bowling trophy! Lastly, we thoroughly enjoyed all the time we spent with Bud. He was fun and funny, and had the greatest giggle! We have missed him bunches. From Sam & Wanda Martin: Bud never knew a stranger. When we joined the club, he was so interested in getting to know us and welcoming us in the club back in the early 90's. I remember his trips to Wolf Creek with fond memories. He would offer everyone a Sloe Screw or Snow Shoe in the parking lot prior to leaving on the bus. Then there was the famous Margarita stop along the way. Wow, some great times. Bud was a unique force to those that were blessed to know him. Never a cross word, always a friendly "High Five" even though our hands never made contact, and a smile that brightened the darkest room. We'll miss you Bud. We'll have a Sloe Screw to you and your new adventure. TTTTT Bud, in Heaven we hope the powder is deep and the skies are blue. Happy trails to you, good friend, til we meet again.
