In past years we have supported the ViBes organization through our donations and participation in their Fun Ski Race at Monarch Mountain. This year they are not having the race but will be having another fund raiser. At this time, they are still working on the alternative. I would still like to collect donations from our members to support this great organization. I will have my 'orange box' at the next several meetings and hope that you will give generously as in the past. If you cannot make the meetings but would still like to donate, please send checks made out to ViBes. Mail to: Claudia Quick, 5025 Copernicus Way, CS, CO Beeps from the VEEP Winter VP updates Winter has been progressing nicely from a skier s point of view. Remember in late November when we were trying to figure out if we were even going to have a Wolf Creek trip because of lack of snow? Look at Crested Butte now. They have more snow than they have had for many years. The biggest problem now is where to haul and store all the snow in the downtown area and on the roofs. Exploring CB should be good with a very different perspective. For the skiers, the double black runs CB is known for should be great along with the rest of the mountain. Sign- ups have been good with CB full. This last Wednesday, January 18, saw a surge of signups for Telluride, so I believe we are nearly filling all the rooms which are reserved. Talk to Marge or Gretchen. If you have a rich aunt or uncle who has nice lodging for you, there is still room on the bus. 3
I can report that Breckenridge has been exceptional over the last few weeks. I m skiing now at Beaver Creek and it is also very good, but all the bumps under a foot of snow is very hard on old legs.-- But I love it!! Sign-ups are coming on Feb. 8 for the Leadville trip. If you haven't been on a Leadville trip, it is just a wonderful, low key, inexpensive trip that leaves lots of room for individuality. Wayne Turner Winter VP The Prez Sez Hello, Blazers, We are now into the month of February. Two of our weekend trips are in the books and both of them were very successful. All of your prayers to Ullr, the Norse god of snow, were answered. Wolf Creek received a great amount of snow just before that trip and Crested Butte received so much snow that they had to close until the ski patrol could make the ski area safe from avalanches and dig out the lifts. Keep the prayers coming so Telluride and Leadville continue to receive great amounts of snow. I hope all of you have been able to take advantage of the great ski conditions around the area. 4
Have you been taking pictures of your ski days? We will have our Annual Photo Contest at the last meeting on March 29. Your pictures must be taken this year ( ) and there are many categories to consider. At the Jan 4, 2017 meeting we collected donations for PPTRC of $120. The organization has responded with this letter. (See Page 5.) This ski season will be coming to a close soon and a new Board is needed. A nominating committee has been created and they are looking for candidates for President, Winter Vice President, Summer Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. If you are approached, please consider running for one of these positions. This is a club run by volunteers so the Ski Club needs your help. Enjoy the snow!!! Claudia Quick Blazer Ski Club President Blazers, get your photos ready! The Blazer s 21 st Annual Photo Contest is March 29th, 2017 At the regular meeting at Southside Johnnys. Please arrive by 6:00 p.m. to enter your photos. Categories: Animals Blazer People Landscape Just Plain Good and Selfies Rules: You may enter ONE photo in each category. The photo must have been taken by you. Please have your name and category on the back of the photo. You must be a member to enter the contest and to vote. It s a good idea not to have the photo framed, but matted is OK. Be there early to get your photos displayed before the voting begins. There will be ribbons and prizes for each category. 9 An Epic Trip to Crested Butte By Jerry Nolan What a trip!! On Friday, Jan. 27, the Blazers gathered at the Woodmen Park and Ride to start their Epic Trip to Crested Butte. Bloody Marys, great muffins, delicious hot coffee, super camaraderie and a lot of new members and guests got the bus loaded to hit the road with Carla, a new driver for the Blazers. The trip captains, Rick Olson and Dorrie Wilk, gave us our travel info and itinerary. I heard mention that the beer and wine consumption for a ten o clock wheels in the well departure was noticeably less than the normal late afternoon departure. We quickly discovered that we had an excellent driver, when Carla got the motor coach out of the really full parking lot. Once we hit the highway, our trivial minds were put to a test with a game of Original Trivial Pursuit. There was a rumor spreading after the game, that Pat, Bob, Marcia and Jerry had so many Lottery scratch tickets, that it took them all the way to Crested Butte to total their winnings. A nice afternoon arrival allowed everyone to be ready for Rick and Dorrie s Happy Hour at the nearby church, where everyone showed up despite the below zero temps. The food was great and no one had to go out for dinner. Rick s herring insured that everyone had good luck on the slopes the next day. Thanks to Harry and Bryan for ferrying the ice chests and some of the Blazers to the church and back. Sue and Darlene introduced some Blazers to the card game Euchre on Friday night in the hotel lobby. Tom took in most of the tricks, while at the same time the Dominoes were clicking and clacking at the next table. Saturday was a day for the record books in Blazer history. Blazers skied every nook and cranny of the mountain. Everyone could find their powder, or their corduroy, and ski to their heart s content. Some skiers, turned serious scavengers, even found poker chips that Dorrie and Carl had stashed in different locations on the mountain for Dorrie s Scavenger Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt had 15 items that people had to find based on Dorrie s cryptic clues. In addition to numerous locations on the ski slopes, the scavenger hunt items were found in odd places, from the biffy on the bus, to the bus stop in town, to a restaurant, and a gift shop in Crested Butte. That provided an opportunity for the searchers to tour the shopping area on Elk Avenue. There were more items found at Old Town Inn. The Black Team, (Elaine, Dick, Marcia, Marge, and Inge), found all 15 tokens and won dozens of valuable prizes. It was a very competitive event and lots of fun. Thanks, Dorrie. The latest report is that, Crested Butte Mountain Resort will not be charging Dorothy for the orange cone that she dented, while she and Jack were wrestling after they fell off Painter Boy lift. Several patrons did request refunds, after it took the Ski Patrol dudes an excruciatingly long 9
time to separate them. Dorothy said later at lunch, that Jack sitting on her had added new meaning to the term, pressed ham sandwich, that she had stashed in her pocket. Some of you may remember, that on a previous Blazer trip, a porcupine was spotted in a tree. So when Harry Gardner asked if a porcupine would be there, leave it to Dorrie and Carl to take care of all the little things they produced a porcupine (admittedly it did look a little more like a spotted pink giraffe) for Harry. Did you spot it, in the tree under the Paradise lift, saying Hi, Harry? We may have a new mascot and tradition for future Blazer events. Speaking of Blazer traditions, the most touching event of the entire trip may have been the ceremony known as the Passing of the Hat as Dorrie passed the hat to Gretchen for use on the Telluride trip. Maybe they could do a re-enactment at the meeting on Wednesday. I don t know which trip captain was responsible for the weather, but with Epic Snow and bluebird skies, all 15 lifts open, 45 Blazers sure did appreciate the job you did. It was a weary bunch that staggered into the lobby for the Saturday Happy Hour, before hitting Elk Avenue for dinner. I heard a rumor, that by 9 p.m. many Blazers misread their watches and thought it was midnight and went to bed. A poem from Darlene Hunera describes the trip: - The snow was fiercely deep at Crested Butte - All the Blazers arrived with plenty of loot - In bright attire, they were shuttled to the mountain - Vertical miles per day, they were a countin - Several skiers proceeded down Rachel s Pitch - And in the distance were heard - Exclamations of What a Bitch The Crested Butte trip sure was a great weekend. Thank you, Rick, Dorrie and Carl, for a trip that was Freakin Awesome!!! 10
Page 9: More than 240 inches of snow greeted Blazers at Crested Butte. The whole area was blanketed with snow, as seen from the Silver Queen lift. At left, trip captains Dorrie Wilk and Rick Olson did a fabulous job with the wine and cheese party held Friday night. Below, Martha Lancaster, Dianne Gardner, Marge Milne and Wayne Turner raise a glass to toast their hosts.
