Beeps from the Veep - - Wayne Turner The winter trips have been very successful this year in a large part due to the new members we have signed up this year. We have our core of participants, but our new members brought the numbers up to where we could do more, and had more options on the trips. There is one more ski trip, Leadville, a self drive with skiing at Cooper, in combination with any one of the other Summit County, Winter Park ski areas. Dick Bauer is taking sign-ups. Get with him and make this inexpensive annual trip a big success. I have been approached by some prospective trip captains to run a few trips next year that we have never done, or haven't done in several years. The gains in membership and participation make added trips next year a possibility. Ski season isn't over. March snow is usually heavy and good. Remember mid-week skiing is available by joining with other members, or by contacting Silver Streaks, or Over the Hill Gang. They have weekly trips to the areas via bus or large vans. Get out there and enjoy it! ViBes Weekend at Monarch Mountain April 1-3, 2016 Make this a day or weekend trip to Monarch Mountain Participate in the ViBes Fun Ski Race If you want to make this an overnight stay, Inge Jacobsohn will be taking reservations for staying in Salida. We will be staying at the Gateway Inn, Salida, CO. You can stay one night or more. This is a u-drive weekend. You don t have to participate in the fun race on Sunday, just come and ski with friends. The motel rate has been very reasonable in the past and we expect it to be close to the same as last year ($55.00). If you are interested, contact Inge Jacobsohn (719) If you wish to participate in the fun ski race, contact Claudia (719) She will be putting together the race team and also taking your donation money at regular meeting nights. This weekend is one of the major fund-raising events for the ViBes organization. The donation money is the race teams entrance fee to participate. Come to Monarch and join the fun!!!!!
The Prez Sez March - Colorado's snowiest month. Let's hope so. The ski areas have not received a significant amount of snow for quite some time. They need snow because we have a couple more ski trips planned. The next trip is the annual u-drive trip to Leadville with skiing at Cooper or another area of your choosing. The dates are March We are going back to Quincy's for dinner on Saturday night and staying at the Silver King Inn. Dick Bauer has planned a great weekend and he must be a great negotiator because the price of this trip has decreased. The last planned trip of the season is for the ViBes (Visually Impaired and Blind Skiers) fun race at Monarch on Sunday, April 3. Some Blazers are making this a ski weekend and will be staying at the Gateway Inn, Salida, CO on Friday/Saturday nights. Inge Jacobson is taking reservations for staying overnight. Call her at You do not need any race experience in order to participate. Contact Claudia Quick if you want to race. Every trip this year has been fabulous. This is because of the trip captains and YOU. Let's have a great ending to our ski season. Elections take place in March. Patty McKenna is taking names of those interested in running for elected offices of: President, Winter VP, Summer VP, Secretary, Treasurer. Non-elected positions are: Membership, Babble editor, Social, Hospitality, Member-atlarge. The ski club runs on volunteers so do not be afraid to speak up and support the Club. Contact Patty now. We are looking for people to host a summer picnic, looking for ideas for a day trip or a weekend trip so we can keep up with everyone. Let me know your ideas. Remember to Spring Forward (move your clocks ahead) on Saturday night, March 12. Daylight Savings Time Starts Sunday. Claudia Quick Your Blazer Ski Club President
Taos a four-letter word for steep By Darlene Hunera A special thank you to our Taos trip captains, Warren Perry and Wayne Turner (as well as Carol Turner and Elaine Myers, who helped keep them on task). Our Taos ski weekend was great fun. What a successful event! The bus ride to and from Taos, N.M., was riddled with fun and fabulous prizes. We, of course, send out a Gracias to John, our driver. He took good care of us and assured us safe travels. Taos Ski Valley is surrounded by sacred wilderness, and infused with the cultures of the Native Pueblo, Hispanic and European peoples. It has rugged terrain, adventure, passion and cultural discovery. Taos Ski Valley was just named USA Today s 4 th best ski resort in North America. It was a hoot to watch the Junior International Competition of skiers and snowboarders traverse through steeps, cliffs, drops and gullies as they gracefully demonstrated fluidity, technique, control and style on the majestic mountains of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Thanks to Ginny Finn who went with the van driver to get dinner on Sunday. After driving out of town for about 4 to 5 miles, she began to wonder why our leaders chose something so far out. Where are we going? she queried. Bent Street, the driver answered. That s WAY BACK! she told him. How long have you lived here? Two years, he answers. They turned right and, low and behold, they find the place. The tour ended with the tourist doing the directing. Coulda found them in Texas!!!! A Blazer ski weekend is not complete without genuine news concerning members and participants. THE TOP 10 TANTALIZING TALES THAT MAKE TAOS A TRIED AND TRUE TRIP 10. Senior drugs were taken (beans, ibuprofen, and Ben Gay) and a game of Bridge was enjoyed by Rick, Jerry, Cathy, Carol and Patty. 9. The Kachina Lodge staff was accommodating in scheduling room changes due to noisy furnaces. Breakfasts were adequate and although the kitchen staff hustled to serve everyone due to a Kansas City bus arrival, Blazers needed to lunge for pancake sandwiches as the bus departed for the ski resort. No, not really. O.K., well, maybe a little. 8. The TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS of getting on and off a chair lift for Dave Harmer were PRICELESS!! Thank you, Dave and Jerry Nolan, for the grins and giggles. 7. Dorothy experimented with a new mogul technique, sliding bum down, on Papa Bear Run (black diamonds only). So Dorothy, are diamonds a girl s best friend?
6. Our catered dinner by Monte s Chow Cart on Saturday evening was delicious and the dessert cakes were decadent. Thank you, Wayne and Warren, for making all of the fine dining arrangements. 5. Jean surprised our trip captains and Blazer Ski Club president with lovely embroidered Taos Ski Towel memorabilia. Thank you, Jean. What a thoughtful gift. 4. Several Blazers (Marcia, Linda, Peggy, Ginny, and Cathy) took a time out to enjoy a day trip at the Mineral Springs Resort and Spa in Ojo Caliente. The spa provided a well- deserved day of mineral pools, bathhouses, mud rooms, kiva and iron pools, artesian restaurant specials, and much more. It was a day of sunning and rejuvenation. 3. Shopping was within walking distance for those who wanted to experience a taste of the town square and get up to 50% off New Mexican wares. Darlene got 60% off a fleece jacket! Of course, it said Durango, Colorado, on it. Ha! 2. The Kachina gods were after Carl all weekend. He survived his yard sale in the Kachina Bowl at Taos Ski Resort with not a scratch. However, the Kachinas got him at the Kachina Lodge after an unfortunate mishap that resulted in fractured ribs. Carl is now on really good drugs. We hope you have a speedy recovery Carl. AND THE NUMBER ONE TRUE TALE THAT MAKES OUR TRIP GENUINE.. 1. WE ALL TRULY HAD A GREAT TIME!!
Wayne Turner and Joe Mullen tried out the steeps on Kachina Peak. Bright blue skies greeted the Blazers at Taos Ski Valley. Photos courtesy of Rick Olson.
