1 SKI CHATTER ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS SWC, PO 228 Schenectady, NY /1/07 Club House Phone (802) SWC INFO Hotline (518) Clubhouse reservations A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION Phone numbers in the Ski Chatter are in the 518 area code unless otherwise noted. WEB Site: National Ski Patrol Nov 1 Meeting John Beach a ski patroller and historian will be the featured speaker at our Nov 1 meeting. He will be talking about the roots of the present National Ski Patrol system and the SWC influences on the early development. John, former North East Regional Director is an active patroller at Gore. He has been studying the Ski Patrol history for some time now and is a recognized expert in the field. Come see how our ski train first aid team became a ski patrol and the influence on Minnie Doyle, the father of the National Ski Patrol. He will also provide an update on the NSP including organization, membership, and training. The meeting will be at the Ancient Order of the Hibernian Hall at 1748 State Street in Sch dy. We have a spacious meeting room and generous parking right outside the door (You can park in the Bowling Alley parking lot). Even better, the cost of liquid refreshment is very reasonable. There is a social session from 7:00 to 7:30 where you can catch up on what is happening in the Club while the program now starts at 7:30 followed by any business meeting. Ancient Order of Hibernians 1748 State St. is just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. From Schenectady take State Street toward Albany. It is on the right approximately 4 ½ blocks past the Rt 7 overpass. If coming from the Thruway take I-890 to Rt 7 East and exit at State Street (Rt 5). Turn right at the top of the ramp and go East 4 ½ blocks. From the Troy direction, take Rt. 7 all the way to State Street (Rt 5) and turn left at the top of the ramp and go 4 ½ blocks to the Ancient Order of Hibernians 1748 State St. on the right. Making the Leap to Tele-Skiing Nov 15 th Meeting So you're an expert downhill skier looking for a new adventure or want to explore the powder in the trees or learn to make the classic turns yourself. Or maybe you re a Nordic skier that likes going downhill if only you could turn. So you're thinking about trying telemark skiing. But how do you get started? What equipment can be converted? What kinds of bindings work best? Which boots are good for starters? Club member Larry Woods knows. He'll answer those questions and more. Equipment, pictures of tele trips, and stories will be presented by an experienced tele skier. As always, the meeting will be at the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Schenectady. 1 Holiday Party Dec 1 at Turf Official Start of SWC s 75 th Birthday Celebrations SWC will officially kick-off a full year of celebrating our 75 th Birthday with the Holiday Party on Dec 1 st. 2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 11/1/07 President's Corner: by Bill Schaefer I would like the entire club to take a minute to WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! As of Oct 7 th, we have 47 new members including 6 new youth members. As I looked at the membership listing, I am always surprised to see how diverse a membership we have. Knowing several of the new names, I see a familiar name who is a soon to be retiree who hopes to spend some time in our clubhouse in Vermont (He says our rates are a bit less then the Von Trapp Lodge) I see a family with young adults looking for fun affordable skiing. I see some very serious Tele-skiers joined us who were guests at the lodge last March for the Telemark Festival Weekend. Last year we peaked at 791 members. Some have been members for over half a century. As of 10/7, the Club has 521 members. Traditionally, much of the membership re-joins just prior to ski season after they have been to the Snow Show or Warren Miller or they heard there is skiing in Vt. (This late fall activity is no small feat for our treasurer Ray and Warren and Jean Burton who do the membership.) We hope as we always do to meet those membership numbers again this year. We would also very much like to grow that number. Our club (your club) is one of the oldest in America at 75 continuous years of operation. Growing the club, a diversified club with interests in year round activities will insure we will be around another 75 years. I am hoping all of our new members will be members for a very long time. Give a membership for the Holidays! Just in time for the Holidays Save yourself a shopping trip to the mall and instead give a membership to a friend or family member. Perhaps to a child who became an adult and is no longer a member? Costing less then a magazine subscription, a membership is a great way to get your friend out enjoying the ski discounts, sharing rides to the lodge, or having a biking or paddling partner. New members are the best way to ensure the Club s future. Just fill out the application on the website or older Chatters. Please include the word Gift from your name somewhere on the application. SWC s 75 th Birthday Kicks-off Early at Parade on Nov 17 This year s theme for Schenectady s Holiday Parade is Classic TV. Based on that, SWC s float will re-create memories from The Freddie Freihofer s Breadtime Stories Show as we get an early start on our 75 th birthday celebrations. When our club was young, the way to celebrate a birthday in the Schenectady area was by being on Freddie Show with your birthday cake. As many folks will remember it was televised daily on WRGB, Channel 6 from 4:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. from 1948 thru Our float will consist of a huge 75 th birthday cake (candles and all); a Peanut Gallery filled with kids watching as a member, portraying artist Jim Fisk, uses a squiggle to create a cartoon (a favorite part of that show). Freddie s theme song will be heard alternately with The Happy Birthday Song as the party rolls through downtown Sch dy. We need all of you to come and celebrate with us! The parade will be held November 17 th, the Saturday before Thanksgiving and starts at 5 p.m. Our celebration will continue with reservations at a local restaurant. Final details, such as: parking, meeting time, meeting place, after-parade plans, etc. will be announced at our regular Thursday night meetings and published on our website as exact plans are finalized. So, plan to put on your party hat on Nov 17 th and join us as we begin celebrating SWC s 75 th birthday. Wanted for Meetings - LCD Projector We are looking for a new projector to replace our old unit. If you would like to help with a contribution toward a new projector, please contact a board member. We are exploring to see if this would be tax deductible for the person donating. Thanks, Bill S. 2 Doug Roylance of Goldstocks showing ski equipment at Meeting

PLAYGROUND also exposes the most unlikely winter sports destination, a resort found directly within the Arabian Desert called Ski Dubai. Olympic Gold Medallist, 3 skiing innovator and pop icon, Jonny Moseley, adds a new title to his resume as he serves as the film s narrator. This year s invigorating action display includes: a rare and insightful segment on ski racing king and perceived industry bad boy, Bode Miller; a trip to Alaska s untouched Chugach Range with X-Games Gold Medallists, brothers Zach and Reggie Crist; unbelievably deep powder in Utah and British Columbia; and astonishing aerial acrobatics from Sweden, and so much more. PLAYGROUND also highlights the future of snowboarding in a segment featuring the youth-infused Burton Smalls Team in which these young prodigies teach us that size truly isn t everything. 4 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 11/1/07 Clubhouse Corner: Clubhouse Reservations for Ed Miller is our Clubhouse reservation coordinator this season. Ed prefers that you your reservations him at at swclodgeres@yahoo.com, if you do not have , you can call him at our new reservation number(518) between 10 am and 10 pm. You can also sign up for rooms at the regular Club meetings. Please use SWC reservations on the subject line of your reservation. Clubhouse Host training meeting Nov 29 We will be having a Clubhouse Host training meeting at the Hibernian Hall on Thur Nov 29. Any potential weekend hosts should come to the training meeting to see what hosting entails. It is a good time to see what is expected and where to find things at the Clubhouse. You will learn what food is needed and how to complete the simplified billing forms. We will talk about the Clubhouse heating and other parts of the physical plant so you can feel confident if you are a first time Host. Weekend Clubhouse Hosts Needed Now We are looking for new (and returning) Clubhouse Hosts for this season. Anybody thinking about going up to the Clubhouse is a potential weekend Host. We would like to have fun by advertising theme weekends this year. How about Italian, Polish and Chinese nights? If the Hosts commit early perhaps they can advertise their menu to appeal to the new members. Your imagination can develop interest in the Clubhouse. People think with their stomachs! Work Weekend Update The Clubhouse work crew of 16 enthusiastic SWCers accomplished much during the weekend: paint in three bedrooms and the upper central hallway, new privacy doors in the attics and lots of new custom curtains on ski pole curtain rods. While the weather was forecast to be rainy and overcast, it turned into a great sunny Saturday. We want to thank all the folks who came up and toiled late on Saturday and again on Sunday to get it all done. Painters Still Needed While much was accomplished at the Work Weekend, we still are looking for some dedicated SWCers who can paint with care. We need people who can go up and do some careful painting in more of the bedrooms and the men s room. We supply the paint, rollers and brushes if you do not have a favorite brush. Call Bill Kornrumpf ( ) to volunteer. 4 Pre-Season Ski Clinic at Stowe Dec John Bomber Anderson is running his 28 th annual ski clinic at Stowe on December 7, 8, 9. This is a great way to start the season. The clinic includes a 3- day lift ticket, 3 nights lodging at the Stowe Motel on the Mountain Road and lessons from Friday noon till Sunday noon. For those who are race minded there is a friendly competition in the NASTAR course on Sunday afternoon. This clinic is for all abilities in alpine skiing and snowboarding (telemark instruction is not available) from never-ever skiers to recreational skiers to racers. This is one of the few times that instruction is also available for top-level experts including the racers. All can improve their skiing in this clinic. The cost is $250 for the lift tickets, lodging and lessons. There is an additional $5 fee for the race on Sunday if you race. There is a welcome party to start the clinic off right. Call Bomber ( ) early to sign up. You need to send in a $50 deposit to hold your reservation. His roster is frequently filled by the end of October so call him now. 6 NOV 1st, 2007 Adirondack 90-Mile Classic Sept 7-9th was the 3-day Adirondack Watershed Alliance Adirondack 90-Mile Classic. About 250 boats of various types, canoes, kayaks, guideboats and war canoes, paddled over three days of lakes, rivers and portages. A mix of touring, recreational, stock and amateur racers paddled from Old Forge to Saranac Lake. The weather varied from hot, mid-eighties and sunny, to mid 50s and rain. Many local people and NNYP members paddled in the event. I have put together a list of local area paddlers who completed the event. NNYP members want to thank Noralee Itchoak, Cindy Amell, Jessica Lutz and Dorie Valenti, as well as other friends and relatives for all the help to make paddling for three days possible. See the results on next page BARGE CHASER It was a lovely day, Sunday September 23rd. Sunny skies, temperatures in the mid 60's and forecast for higher. So, what's wrong with that? It was the day of the Barge Chaser canoe and kayak race at Grafton Lakes State Park, that's what! So many times we have stood on the beach in the cold rain, or fog so thick you couldn't even see the water...so we hardly knew how to react. The wind did kick up a bit just as the last of the 28 canoes and kayaks were finishing the course...just so we wouldn't take the weather entirely for granted. The picnic that followed was enjoyed by most of the 42 racers and their families, with plenty of burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers to go around, along with a variety of side dishes and desserts contributed by the participants. Thanks go to Don Patneaude for timing and MCing the awards, to Terry Tamer, Geoff Moore and Ed and Kim Greiner for help with the buoys, to Bob and Lin Cooley (and Kim) for grilling and to all who helped to make sure we were cleaned up after the race. Hey, if word of this weather gets around, we might even get more paddlers next year. How about you? Susan Brisley Knapik Paddlers' Weekend Anyone remember the song, "Stagger Lee"? Well, the day was clear, and the sun was shining, then the rain came tumbling' down! The day was overcast, but we set forth with other paddling enthusiasts on the Green River Reservoir. After a couple of hours and sufficient whining on my part (!), we stopped for lunch at one of the cozy, moss-covered campsites. We were surrounded by balsams, birches, maples--a virtual autumnal feast, if you will, replete with the sounds and smells of the forest. It was shortly after Laurie shared her wonderful chocolate brownies, and they were wonderful, that it began sprinkling. Well, then it began raining, and then it actually teemed upon us. Never mind, though, because my Hornbeck beat them all-- hee hee! --well, except Brad and Laurie, and later, a couple of others but it was a blast, nonetheless. It seemed as though everyone was caught off-guard that day--even the cyclists were rained upon and walkers, as well. Entertainment was brought to us once again with Nancy H's "birdie" move. It seems we can't get together without attempting to improve that maneuver; so, we'll call it Birdie II for this time, and perhaps there'll be more to come in the future! Watch for that photo and you be the judge. Sunday, your Daring Three ventured up the Waterbury Reservoir and "discovered" several concretians. Yup, there were some remaining after my culling in August! Kathy P. shared the findings with our guests, who were duly impressed, I think. (Thanks to Ed Miller for the interesting and informative treks, August being the concretian-siting trip). We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the State camp -beach site, where Uncle D. was able to use his French conversational skills. He even found some free hot chocolate/coffee, offered on closing day for us. Last, but not at all least, new friends were made on this Paddlers' Weekend, amid yummy meals and a spirit of camaraderie. Thanks to all who attended and we hope to see you up there again, when we WILL play charades, folks! Perhaps one of you will be hosting next time?. Anna Dugan 6
