1 SKI CHATTER 8/1/2014 ALL THE NEWS THAT FITs SWC, PO 228,Schenectady, NY Clubhouse Phone (802) Clubhouse Reservations (518) A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION Phone numbers in the Ski Chatter are in the 518 area code unless otherwise noted. WEB Site: Thursday Night 2014 Bike Rides SCHEDULE CHANGE for the Thursday Night 2014 Bike Rides Please be aware that the overall schedule for the Thursday night bike rides has changed. The last of our bike ride will now be on Thursday August 21. No one came forward to schedule that date so, Heidi and Anna have been gracious enough to move their date from the 28th to the 21st. Much as we all like the long days, by the end of August, they are not so long and we have to quit early anyway. Whether the rides had beautiful weather and were well attended or if the weather was wet and were not as well attended, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, all who have hosted the rides. Actually, Sue s bike ride was rained out but quite a few of us showed up and we had a great time. The annual, Award Winning Stowe Antique Car Show is that weekend and it is just up the road from the Clubhouse. Walt will be cooking up all sorts of goodies for your enjoyment before and after your jaunts to the Car show and short hikes to the many waterfalls in the Stowe area. This is always a great weekend since most of the antique cars drive right past our dinning room windows. It is rumored that one of our member will be bringing his 71 Nova Super Sport and a 62 Rolls Royce (some difference there). There will be opportunities for biking, and boating (paddling and maybe Walt will bring Tuuli - his Ness Yawl sailboat) in the Waterbury Reservoir across the street from the Clubhouse. If we are lucky, we may just have Chef Earl to provide a culinary masterpiece for our Saturday night dinner. Make your reservations on line ( so Walt knows how much food to prepare and get a good room while they are available. Make Summer Clubhouse Reservations We are now requiring you to make reservations for the Lodge whether it is during the winter or summer. The Lodge reservation system is online for our entire year. It is important that folks who are planning on using the house make reservations so that others will know what to expect when they arrive. We have had folks think that they were staying in their favorite rooms (and had reserved that room) find the room filled when they arrive. This is a situation that is easy to avoid if everybody just takes the time to make a reservation before they start the drive north. Please be considerate. Although you may make reservations on line, you can still do so the old fashioned way: call Tom Jaras at You must make a reservation for ANY STAY that you are planning for the Lodge at Waterbury Center. Terry & Gina riding along the Mad River during the June Bike Weekend (A great ride) 1 Dues were Due June 1 Since the Club's fiscal year runs from June 1 to May 31, now is the time to send in your dues. The new membership form is on the outside page so you can just print a copy and send it in. You can also use the Membership page on the website ( to pay by PayPal or credit card. The website is preferred as it makes less work for our volunteers. Remember, if you have not paid your dues, you will have to pay non-member rates when you stay at the Clubhouse this summer.

2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 8/1/14 Presidents Column by Dorie Valenti So Mel called and left a message. He said, Dorie. Mel. You know what Judy's planning on doing for the Electric City Regatta? Call me. I called him right back. What's she doing? She's borrowing Ray's C1. We're in a C2. We can't beat her in a C1?! Of course we can beat her in a C1. So what's the problem? It puts her in a different class so there is no competition. No competition?! No competition is a concept with which I'm not fully familiar and it made me uneasy, like trying to find a reason for being, and Mel seemed to sense this disturbance. I'll tell you what, he responded. We can go after Sue and Roy. Sue and Roy?! They are way out of my league. We'll ask them to give us a 5 minute lead. So we come in at 35 minutes and they come in at 31 minutes, that means we win, sort of? A sort of win wouldn't be bad, I thought, would be OK really, and as I kept doing the calculations if they gave us a 30 minute lead, we'd be able to beat them in pretty much no time at all, a sort of win kind of. Competition is the greatest, isn't it? Competition provides us with numerous opportunities to win, or if not to win to at least sort of win or to maybe even kinda win, kinda maybe, and if we can't make it into any of these categories we can always fall back on that old Gandhi saying about winning and effort and blah, blah, blah. I mean the bottom line is that you can't beat winning but sometimes in order to win we need to set the stage. Bill K taught me this, no, he actually didn't teach this to me, I watched him strategize a win and I learned from his performance. This happened about, well, some years ago when he was aging into the newly categorized Extreme Skier Class and he signed up to race in the Open Class with the young'uns. I was in charge of organizing our race team, and I called him up. I was annoyed with his decision to compete with the young'uns. What are you doing? I asked him. You are going to lose, and you are going to bring the team down with you I told him. He explained that he is planning on winning the Class II in the Open Category. In other words, he was planning on being the fastest of the slowest racers in the fast class, and he won! He won first place in the Open Class II Category and the team did well and we celebrated and drank a lot of beer and carried on ad infinitum showering ourselves with accolades of praises and we toasted to each other and carried on some more. You can't beat winning! So we had two weeks to go before the Electric City Regatta and it was Monday night at Kiwanis Park and Mel told me to sit in the back of the boat and to put my feet on the brace and I discovered in no time at all that my ability to keep the boat moving forward in a straight line may not be accomplished in time for the Electric City, but giving no never mind to that, what I really like about sitting in the back of the boat is yelling out the HUTS! I yell HUT! And Mel changes his paddle to the other side of the boat, just like that, like a reflex or something, like I have some sort of secret power, or if not, then the word itself is magical. I mean no one has ever responded to anything I have ever said ever in my entire life as quickly as this HUT. Unfortunately, the timing of my huts did not keep the boat moving in the direction in which it was intended to go and so Mel would sometimes HUT from the front of the boat, stripping me of all my powers, just like that! Usurped by the bow man! So, Mel, let's say Ray refuses to loan Judy his C1 but agrees to loan Joe and Judy his C2, would we be able to beat them? Hut, he said. (Oops.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We need your Program Ideas Perhaps you heard a good speaker? Maybe you are taking a great trip this summer? Suggest a good movie? We need to line up the programs and need your ideas. Contact Will Seyse ( ), our programs coordinator. Now is the time to make a suggestion so Will can do the coordination and scheduling for next season. Wow, this year will be Bomber s 35 th Pre Season Clinic at Stowe! In addition to the welcome party on Thursday night, there will be a 35th Celebration party on Friday night. 3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 8/1/14 Clubhouse News by Terry Tamer Words from our Director: Well, we had a wonderful time in June at the bicycling weekend sponsored by lodge hosts Bill and Gina. We had 18 people there and we certainly took advantage of the beauty of Vermont mountains in the summer. And, the food served on the patio was delicious. Thank you, Gina. By the time you read this, we will have also enjoyed a July weekend of hiking up there hosted by Dorie and Sid. Thank you Dorie and Sid. More about this next month. Unfortunately, nobody came forward to sponsor the Independence Day (4th of July) weekend. Although Stowe was teeming with people doing all kinds of activities at that time, a friend of mine who drove by the Lodge on the weekend reported the parking lot was completely empty. Oh yes, by the way, we did have a lodge committee meeting while we were up there in June on Bill and Gina s weekend. We discussed many things about the future of the lodge and we actually made a few changes. Nothing is changed for the summer sponsored weekends there. However, we will be making announcements in the Chatter and elsewhere in future months discussing exactly what those changes will be. Finally, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control Judy will not be able to sponsor the August 22 through 24 recreational paddlers weekend at the Lodge. However, if you are at all interested in such a weekend, see Sue Knapik s September paddler s weekend. Would you like to make the clubhouse a little bit more fun? We would like to raise $ 1,000 to invest in improving the opportunities for fun in the non-ski seasons at the clubhouse. One investment is to purchase and install Disc Golf units in our back yard. We will have some 50-50's and other activities such as silent auctions at our gatherings to raise donations. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, or an item for a silent auction, please contact Bill Schaefer or any club officer. Scheduled Weekends at the Lodge AUGUST 1-3 TRAILS AND ALES WEEKEND AT THE LODGE with Kelly and Michael de la Rocha Take a self-guided tour of some of the region's fine breweries or join the group for an invigorating hike in the mountains or do both! Later we'll enjoy a meal inspired by local beer and sample a few artisan brews, too. AUGUST 8-10 ANTIQUE CAR SHOW AT THE LODGE with Walt Kangas The plan includes the antique car show at Stowe (featuring a club members 71 Nova Super Sport and a 62 Rolls Royce), biking, and boating (paddling and maybe Walt will bring Tuuli - his Ness Yawl sailboat). If 3 we are lucky, we may just have Chef Earl to provide a culinary masterpiece for our Saturday night dinner. AUG 22-24, JUDY S RECREATIONAL PADDLING WEEKEND CANCELLED Due to circumstances beyond our control the weekend hosting is canceled. But, you can come up on your own and take advantage of all the possibilities like driving or walking to the top of the highest mountain in Vermont. There is always things to do in Stowe or Waterbury. Please try to take advantage of one of the other offseason sponsored weekends at the Lodge if you can't go up this weekend. SEPTEMBER PADDLER S WEEKEND AT THE LODGE with Sue Knapik. The racing paddlers are occupied all summer long with their races. This will afford those paddlers and any recreational paddlers a chance to paddle some of the waters in Vermont or have a change of pace and go for a hike or a bike ride. You also don t have to be a racing paddler to come. They are really a great bunch of people and they don t bite. OCTOBER 3-5 LEAF PEEPING, PHOTOGRAPHY, HIKING AND PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST WEEKEND AT THE LODGE with Ronda Anderson and Catherine Young. These ladies will be bringing back the old tradition of the autumn leaf peeping weekend at the lodge. However, they have lots more ideas to make it interesting. In order to peep at the leaves you have to get out in the forest. Hence the hiking. Then, why not bring some of that beauty home to share with others? Hence the photography. You can be a rank amateur who just takes photos with your phone or you can have a highly technical one. It is the person who points the camera at something beautiful that has the greatest impact on the quality of the photo. More directly from Ronda and Catherine later. June Bike Weekend Dinner on the Patio (empty plates)
