Warren Miller Movie Review - No Turning Back - Well, the Warren Miller movie has played at the Palace Theatre and that heralds in the start of the ski season for us here in the North East. Even though the movie played early this year, there was much enthusiasm to see the show and the reviews from people there was that it was the best in a long while. This enthusiasm also translated into ticket sales for SWC; 284 to be exact. And this means a profit of $852 for SWC. A big thank you goes out to Jon Skalwold, Mike Baker, Fernando Ferreira and John Gillivan for pushing the ticket sales and making this a success for the Club. Well, as I am sure you have noticed, it seems that the weather has also taken a hint from the early playing of the Warren Miller movie and has set into motion the early arrival of winter. Here s to a great season. Hope to see you out on the slopes real soon. He has been doing mapping since 2000 and geocaching since He will give some history of geocaching, explain how to do it, and provide examples of things involved with it at the meeting. It is a great way to find new places to hike to and trails to be explored. Geocaching is a recreational activity in which participants use a GPS mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. Many are placed in our NY state parks and recreation areas. Greg will be discussing all of the possibilites. A typical cache is a small waterproof container whose location is given in using clues (GPS coordinates, physical description). The Cache contains a logbook (with a pen or pencil). The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it. The meeting will be at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 1748 State St. just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. Great Annual SWC Chile Cookoff Jan 22 Meeting The Thursday meeting on January 22nd, we'll have our annual chili cook off. We're looking for your hottest, smokiest, meatiest or unique chilis! 2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/14 Presidents Column by Dorie Valenti Sages Ravine is beautiful, one of the most beautiful hikes in the world, at least in the world as I have seen it, and since I have not seen all that much of the world, all the continents and mountain ranges and lakes and oceans and cities and ports and all, I will go out on a limb here to say emphatically that Sages Ravine may well be one of the most beautiful hikes in the world and it is located just a short drive from here, along the Appalachian Trail as it crosses the Taconic Range between Massachusetts and Connecticut. A canopy of evergreen boughs and leaves shades the trail, sunshine falls through an opening here and there, the stream flows slowly over rocks and tree roots, flowing into a pool, seeming to rest for awhile before moving on. We walk along the edge a few feet above the flowing waters, boulders lean out, covered with moss, and the forest seems to absorb us. So what's so unusual about the Ravine? To describe the Ravine would be to describe many of the numerous hikes in the Adirondacks, the Catskills, the Berkshires, any of them. The Ravine, however, emanates something else, something...else. Not sure what that is. The winter snows will fall blanketing the forest floor, the flakes melting into the stream until the waters freeze and the wind will blow the snow into drifts. If we are lucky the tracks from our snow shoes or cross country skis will be the first tracks as we trek into the Ravine to experience a quiet solitude and its untamed beauty. Dont forget the Great SWC/MVHC/NNYP Photo Contest Don't be left out, Enter Now!! Show off the beauty surrounding the SWC Clubhouse or members having fun. Whether the image was captured by your phone, Instamatic or digital SLR with post processing, you can enter the photography contest. The only rule of the contest is the image must be taken while you stayed at the lodge. If you don't have an image yet, there is plenty of time, reserve your stay at the SWC Lodge by yourself or at one of the Weekend Event(s). The photo contest will be juried by club members at the April 16 SWC meeting next year. That is our last meeting with Ice Cream Social and election of officers so there will be a crowd. Send the images to Ronda Anderson iceanderson@nycap.rr.com (put the words Photo Contest in the subject line) or mail the photo to Ronda Anderson, 130 Charlton Road, Ballston Spa, NY Winning photos will be included in the Ski Chatter. 3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/14 Clubhouse News by Bill Kornrumpf Words from our (New) Director: By the time you receive this note, many of our ski areas will be up and operating at full capacity. Stowe opened with top to bottom sking on Nov 15 for the season pass holders (a nice perk to be the first on the mountain). The pubic joined in on the fun on the 22 nd with even more of the mountain open. Sugarbush was scheduled to open on the 22 nd with Mad River opening with the new snow. This year we are eligible to do more cheap skiing than ever with the CSC discounts and our own discounted tickets. I am anxious to get on the slopes, I am signed up for the Bomber Ski Clinic and have already been to Stowe once for my Mountain Host orientation. This is predicted to be a banner year for skiers and riders with more than average snowfall. Our reservation system is up and running so look at your calendar and make your room reservations on line before other things get in the way of your skiing. As I write this, there are still many rooms available for the Christmas-New Years holiday period. The Clubhouse is an ideal place to celebrate the holidays with skiing all day and a warm fireplace room to relax in after some apre-ski activies in town. Gina and I will be up there and we want to see you too. Speaking of reservations, Terry Tamer is coordinating the Weekend Hosts this season. A number of members have signed up to host their favorite weekends but he needs many more of you to pitch in and host a weekend or holiday period. Remember, Terry is a volunteer like all of us and you can make his job much easier by calling him on and signing up for a host weekend. Last month I said that the past 5 years have been hard on the Clubhouse budget with the expenses of two new furnaces, a new refrigerator and new roof. It turned out that I somehow forgot to paste in the article outlining the new rate structure. I did get it in the web version of the Chatter but I am repeating it here for the snail mail folks. Make a plan to use the Clubhouse this winter now. Invite your friends, families and cohorts. Think Snow Bill Kornrumpf First tracks Nov 15 th at Stowe's Preview Day Great Snow and a promise for this season 3 We Need Weekend Lodge Hosts by Terry Tamer Not many people have called to reserve their Hosting weekends at the Clubhouse and I did not know why. Then, when writing this note, I discovered that I DIDN T WRITE AN ARTICLE LAST MONTH! I LOST A WHOLE MONTH! Well anyway, here is the plea for help: We are in dire need of weekend lodge chairpersons. Here are the dates that are not scheduled where we would like YOU to step forward and volunteer: Christmas Week - Dec 24 through Jan 1 Jan 2 4; Jan (MLK Weekend) ; Jan Feb 6 8; Feb 13 15; Feb (Presidents Week) Feb 27 - March 1; Mar 13-15; Mar Remember, there are great benefits for volunteering. You stay there free for that weekend and get vouchers for additional free stays at the Lodge, depending on how many people you have for your weekend. Your tasks will be: Plan the two breakfasts and one dinner for that weekend; shop for the dinner; supervise the preparing meals by soliciting volunteer helpers; collect the payments of those there. Most importantly, you get welcome people to the lodge and get to know them personally. During that time you look out for our beloved lodge. And, you have our everlasting gratitude and enable us to continue to have a low cost lodge to stay in. So, please give me a call or send me an . My phone number is (518) and my address is terrytamer7@gmail.com. New Clubhouse Rates Announced Over the summer, it became clear that we would need to increase the Clubhouse rates this year. The cost of installing the two new furnaces, new roof and refrigerator has required us to bring in more money to pay back the treasury. After carefully tracking all of the expenses and usage during the last ski season, we have increased the lodging amount by $3 per night while keeping the meals price constant. This has been coupled with generating a significant increse in usage especially in the summer to bring the Clubhouse budget into balance and allow us to build up a capital account that can be used to pay for capital expenses when they occur. The new rates are: Rates: Ski Season Off Season No Host Year Round With Host Lodging Lodging Dinner Members $28.00 $23.00 $10.00 Non-member $33.00 $33.00 $15.00 Juniors (7 to 17 & 18 if in school) $15.00 $10.00 $5.00 Child (less than 7) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00 For this winter, the members cost of a weekend at the Clubhouse will be $66 for two nights lodging, two breakfasts and a great Saturday night dinner and $81 for non-members. That's a bargain when conpared with the cost of lodging and meals in a resort village like Stowe. Coupled with our no blackout Stowe tickets, it is a bargain. Make your reservations now for this winter and enjoy all that northern Vermont has to offer.

4 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/14 Always make Lodge Reservations We are requiring everybody using the Clubhouse to make reservations on line or by phone. We need to know who is going up to make sure we don't have conflicts over the rooms. Are you computer challenged? Don t know how to make reservations for lodgeing stays online? Just call our friendly volunteer, tom Jaras. His phone number is Tom will make those reservations for you. Just don t forget to thank him. Finally, the Clubhouse is for all the members of the Club. It will only function well if everbody signs up every time they plan on going up. We have had conficts arrise when members have just gone up without reservations. They set up in a room and late at night a member with reservation shows up and cannot get into their favorite room. Anita is our New Ski Ticket Seller Bill Schaefer, our ticket seller for many years, has retired from the job and we have a new Ski Ticket seller this year. She is Anita Cartin and has now been trained by Bill. She is ready to send out the discounted Stowe lift tickets so now is the time to place your order.. Last year the majority of the tickets were purchased via the website and PayPal and it reduced the time it took to deliver the tickets to you. So, in an effort to simplify and speed up the process, we are asking everbody to use the website and PayPal to order their discount tickets this year. The process for obtaining our deep discounted, no blackout, Stowe lift tickets is to: 1. Log into the SWC website 2. Click on the Cheap SWC Ski Tickets button 3. Click on How to purchase SWC Cheap Ski Tickets 4. Enter the password from the Blue Membership card 5. Follow the directions to finish payment via PayPal As of press time, 100 Stowe tickets have been ordered. The price for the no blackout, discounted tickets are: Stowe: Adult $70, Sr (65+) $65, Jr (6-12) $65 Sugerbush: We are still in negotiation with Sugerbush Mad River Glen: We recommend the Mad Card at $154 for 3 days of skiing, use MRG website or (802) before Dec 15. Just to calibrate you on ticket prices this year, Stowe's advance sale, on line ticket price is $84 minimum this year. The ticket window price for a Holiday period, ticket is $103. That makes our no black out tickets a $33 savings over the window and $14 web prices. Call Anita on for more information on the discount lift ticket program. Remember, Lift Tickets make excellent Holiday gifts for family and ski friends. Stowe Ski Club Appreciation Days Stowe has announced the dates for what SWCers call the Cheap Ski Stowe days. 6 Please call leader in advance; weather and other factors may cause changes. Please, no pets on any hike as a courtesy others. This is a volunteer organization and with any activity there is a presumption of risk. Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety. Bring ample food and water, dress appropriately. If it snows in December, Joe Nicolella will lead an x- country hike on a fairly level course nearby. If you are interested, call Joe at and make reservations. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Sunday, November 2 - The two Grand-kids called. "Let's go for a walk," said they, so always aware of the need to recruit new hike leaders, we went. The Lower Gregg Road entrance of the Plotterkill was our choice for the outing. They were fascinated by a bent tree with a large tree burl but they liked looking down into the gorge even more. For about a mile all did well, but then they felt tired, and so we turned back. It was a fun trip, but no ball python. Someday. John Rack THANK YOU KUDOS THANK YOU Our own Ron Neadle asked Clifton Campbell of the Nature Conservancy if he could get wood chips for the trail from the parking lot into the Christman Preserve. When he gave the okay, Ron paid a visit to the very professional landscapers at DeCarlo Landscaping on Rte. 7 above Duanesburg. These people could not have been nicer when they heard Ron s plea for the chips and gave him a truckload for the path. The Thanksgiving crowd will be so grateful when they walk in in such comfort. Thanks, DeCarlo Landscaping. Others helped on this project. Dan Martin, a friend of Ron's who lives catty-cornered to Christman brought out his front loader and they laid out the chips. This is what I call real community service. Thanks, one and all for a job well done. We all appreciate all you've done. 12/01/14 Want some easy hikes before it snows? Try Beebee Hill near Chatham. This is considered an easy two-mile trip to a fire tower that you can climb. It supposedly can be done in an hour, but who wants to rush? They say it's a little steep at first but gets easier with about 300 feet of elevation. The trail is considered well maintained. If you are up for climbing the fire tower, you'll get a great view of the Catskills. Go to for more information and directions go to. Be sure to check out the details carefully. Closer to home, just a few people are aware of the H. G. Reist Wildlife Sanctuary deep in the heart of Niskayuna. Several miles of trails run through 111 acres of woodland over fairly flat terrain. You can enter the sanctuary from the end of Morgan Avenue or from the Center for Forest Preserve, 897 St. Davids Lane off Rt. 7. For a map and other details, check out Mohawk Hudson Bird Club web site at Thanks to Ruth Hasler for researching these hikes for us. Finding fairly easy, nearby areas to spend a few hours away from the crowds, especially at this hectic time of the year, is always a bonus. The winter lecture series at Thacher is planned for Sundays in January on the 11th, 18th, and 25th. Watch for winter walks on these dates in the January newsletter. These are always fun times and a chance to keep moving during our long cold winters. Merry Christmas And HAPPY HOLIDAYS THANK YOU 6

Write-ups, photos, jokes, stories, etc. or activities that might interest the group (like hiking, theater, unruly neighbors, etc) are all fair game. Even just a rambling dissertation on the great effects of paddling on the body and mind is OK. Send to Sue Knapik: SBKnapik@yahoo.com, by the 10 th of the month.
