1 SKI CHATTER 12/1/2012 ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS SWC, PO 228,Schenectady, NY Clubhouse Phone (802) A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION Phone numbers in the Ski Chatter are in the 518 area code unless otherwise noted. Despite the East Coast s record-breaking mild winter, the Meathead crew managed to sniff out the 2012 goods. Fighting low snowfall & mid-summer temps, they hurled themselves off buildings, bashed icy moguls, plowed through some of the deepest Eastern powder ever filmed. Join their quest from Vermont to Quebec, including their first trip across the pond to Switzerland. In classic East Coast style, Meathead Films overcomes struggles and keeps things entertaining, No Matter What. The movie is at the Ancient Order of Hibernian's 1748 State St. and starts at 7:30. The Ancient Order of Hibernians hall, is just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. To find the Ancient Order of Hibernians, take State Street toward Albany. It is on the right side approximately 4 ½ blocks past the Rt 7 overpass. From the Thruway, take I-890 to Rt 7 East, exit Rt 7 at State Street (Rt 5). Turn right at the top of the ramp and go East 4 ½ blocks. 2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/12 Presidents Column by Pete Weykamp Welcome to the dark season. The sun is so low it comes horizontal through the windows. Baseball caps won't work those times of the day. Dusk happens around 2 in the afternoon if you're on the slopes. And keep your hat and gloves handy. It s cold out there. I haven't started the snow blower yet or turned off the outdoor faucets, but I'm closing Alvin's Chipmunks Playland for the season. The residents are getting ready for winter too. This is the dawn of the ski season. It's a good time to check your personal preparedness. I m just starting the 7 th week of pre-season training. I way over estimated how much time I would be spending in the gym. Meetings and travel and work and hobbies and whatever keep interrupting the schedule. I thought 4 to 5 hours a week (way below Lindsey Vonn's 20 to 30) was realistic. I'm actually averaging more like 90 to 120 minutes. I'd like to believe that a desk job doesn't preclude a fit & healthy lifestyle if not healthy then at least sustainable (to use current vernacular) but it s like being a vegetarian; sometimes it s tough to remain different. I commute to work on a bike, run up and downstairs and around the yard doing Yours truly somewhere in the Northern Kingdom things, pick up stones and lay them on top of each other and plant things and dig them up and plant them again. It's called alternative training. I do things Lindsey Vonn doesn't even think about. I no longer ride the bike, however, mostly because of the dark and some traffic issues. During the daylight season, while in a crosswalk and with the walking signal or plenty of time on the orange countdown, some drivers get visibly and verbally aggravated. They honk and curse. I thought of kicking their car, but I never get close enough. Then it occurred to me to try spitting. A bicyclist interrupting a right turn for maybe 4 seconds is apparently such an egregious assault on the traveling public that the situation may make an aged super vet riding a 3o+ year old bike a little selfconscious. I paid something like $750 for a full season pass to ski Gore or Whiteface. One year Whiteface reported being open for 155 days. That's puts my pass at cost of $4.84 per day. Some of my ski companions don't have season passes. They shop for deals. They claim it allows them to ski a variety of areas. Season pass holders, on the other hand, talk about local knowledge and maximizing their outing. I like variety too, but my SWC frugal streak can t be ignored. If I ski anywhere else but Gore or Whiteface, I should add $4.84 to the price of the lift ticket. 2 A $60.00 ticket to Stowe actually costs me $ Not a back breaker, but a lot higher than the cost of skiing Gore. But on Club Appreciation Days it's only $37.84 ($66 for 2 days and $4.84/day) to ski Stowe. That fits in the budget. I'm focused on Club Days. Making each of them would help make a great season. Club Days & Council Days are examples of the economic advantage of joining a club. There are less tangible benefits also. Just knowing there are other obsessed skiers has been wonderful for my self-esteem. Having them clue me into some select stashes is priceless. Those benefits aren t mailed out people have to make an effort to take advantage of them. We tried hard at the Snow Expo to point out those facts to anyone that so much as slows down as they pass the SWC booth. Our club requires a minimal investment for membership. All you have to do is mail in the form and a check. Members don t have to sell tickets, march in the parade, or participate in work weekends. They are free to maximize the benefits that are offered without any additional investment. That s a bargain. But for a deeper, holistic, more satisfying investment, a member might consider volunteering. It s good for the soul and sustainable. Even simple actions like hosting, or coordinating a meeting presentation, or working on the e- mail system, helps to move the club forward. If you see something that could be improved, say something to a Board member but only if you are ready to help out. Instead of saying: The club ought to.., say: I d like to.. You get out of it, what you put into it. Kudos to the volunteers. Bon ski folks. It s all downhill from here. Okemo & Mt Snow Reps attend Meeting Maureen Kline from Okemo Mountain and Meghan Ruby from Mt Snow attended the Nov 15 meeting and provided SWCer members with information as to what's new on those mountains. Okemo has three new glades and added another waffle house. Mt Snow featured their Bluebird Express lift, a sushi bar called Go Fish and a full mountain face - top to bottom - terrain park on their Corinthia Peak. Both mountains donated a pair of tickets to the club for raffles at the meetings. Your Chatter editor, Bill Kornrumpf was the first winner - a pair of tickets to Okemo. A raffle for the Mt Snow tickets will be held at our meeting on January 10, You never know what you might win at a meeting. Warren Miller Movie The Warren Miller Movie has come and gone and the ski season has officially started. A hardy thank you goes out to all the SWC Club members who stomped the ground, selling tickets to all who would listen. A particularly large thanks goes out to Mike Baker, Fernando Ferreira, Pete Weycamp and Jon Skalwold. SWC appreciates your efforts.

3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/12 Clubhouse News by Sandy Leith Journal from the SWC House Nov 16, 2012 As I stretch my floor boards and feel the chill growing outside I know that soon many of my members will start coming to VT to visit within my warm cozy walls. All the folks around here are getting excited about the upcoming season. Many of the ski resorts have been blowing snow and are now open for the season(a very early start this year). Stowe opened on Nov 10 and has good skiing already. There is already a 4 reading on the stake at the top of Mansfield and on the snow making trails. It seems like the weather will be in our favor to bring some wonderful fluffy white snow for all my visitors. I am looking forward to having hosts and members here enjoying my fire and my warm rooms, enjoying good conversation and good food. See you at the house! Hosts are needed, you can help Each year there is a need to have volunteers at the house in Waterbury Center to make dinner on Saturday night and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. The host also collects the money from members for the cost of staying at the house. As a thank you the person hosting gets a free stay and additional vouchers depending on the number of members staying. We especially need hosts for the President's week period. There are several weeks available for volunteers to host at the house. Please Sandy Culver (that is her new married name) at traildiamond@gmail.com or call her at to offer a weekend of your time. Your clubhouse committee has been working over the summer to simplify the hosting duties so you will have plenty of time to ski and socialize while you are hosting. Stowe Ski Club Appreciation Days Once again Stowe will be honoring local clubs on December 7-9 (Fri-Sun), January 9,10 & 11 (Wed - Fri) and March (Wed - Sun) with heavily discounted lift ticket prices. As in the past the January and March days will be will all be hosted at the Club House. We hope to see you there. The details are on the Stowe website: The ticket prices are: Adult Junior/Senior (13-64 yrs) (6-12 & 65+) 1-day=$45 1-day=$36 2-day=$66 2-day=$40 3-day=$98 3-day=$59 4-day=$122 4-day=$70 5-day=$152 5-day=$87 3 There is a new door combination The door combination was changed at the work weekend. You will not be able to enter the Clubhouse without the new combination. It is on your GREEN membership card. All of the windows have had security pins installed so that none of the windows can be opened from the outside. If you find yourself locked out without your combination, use the door bell to summon help or wait for somebody else to arrive. If all else fails, you can call Sandy or Bill (see list of board members) or rent a room at a motel in town. Make sure you have the combination in your car's glove box and in our wallet. There is no reason that you should not have the combination when you arrive. SWC Discount Tickets 2013 We have $60 Stowe & $65 Sugarbush tickets and the discount at Bolton this year. The Stowe tickets are "go-straight-to-lift" (RFID) tickets so you do not have to stop at the ticket counter at all. You know you need ski tickets, so why wait? If you are reading this and will need tickets for Christmas/New Years or Presidents Week, you need to get to a meeting or put the Chatter down and order your tickets now by mail. Your club ticket seller will be away for much of February so you need to order early. Remember, you are saving $30 per ticket so do your part and put your request in the mail with plenty of time to spare. If you ask too much of our volunteer ticket handlers, they may experience premature burnout and then we will not have the discount tickets. This year the Stowe Junior and Senior tickets are different and you will need to purchase the correct tickets as a Jr ticket will not work for a Senior and vice versa. We were not able to reach an agreement for savings at Jay Peak so we do not have Jay tickets this year. Remember - Your friends and family must be a member to use these tickets. Use by non-members will jeopardize the program as there are mountain requirements for club use only, sales tax if we sold to non-members. A single ticket savings pays for a years membership so sign up your friends who use the tickets. Please do not inconvenience the volunteers that sell these. Like last year, Tickets will be available at meetings and through the mail. Do not expect to purchase at the lodge. GPS Instructions to find the Clubhouse The address is 3650 Waterbury-Stowe Road, Waterbury Center, VT or , Lat & Long. Waterbury-Stowe Road is also Vermont Route 100.

5 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 12/1/12 We Thank the Work Weekend Workers We had a great group of 16 workers who almost finished all the tasks on the to do list October The weather was very cooperative with bright sun and a warm dry weekend that was perfect for putting a coat of white paint on the south and east sides of the house. Inside, a team finished up the attic electrical system and re-installed the paneling. All the smoke alarms and CO detectors were tested and two were replaced in the process. We even were able to do some repairs to the north chimney and many screens were repaired and placed back in service. All this was in addition to the standard cleaning and straightening up of the house. So we are ready to host our members and friends with new wood in the woodshed and a new refrigeration in the kitchen. The Saturday featured an early traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings.
