1 SKI CHATTER 4/1/2013 ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS SWC, PO 228,Schenectady, NY Clubhouse Phone (802) A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION Phone numbers in the Ski Chatter are in the 518 area code unless otherwise noted. WEB Site: A Bike Ride in Provence (Mountains, Valleys & Lavender Fields) April 4 Meeting by The Kornrumpfs See the sights of southern France and hear about the 2011 bike trip to the top of Mt. Ventoux (one of the featured bike rides on the Tour de France). Hear about the vineyards and lavender fields they saw along the way. The three week bike ride in Provence featured stays in B&Bs & small hotels along the way. We will be talking about the bikers and folks we met along the way as well as the food and sightseeing. The meeting is at the Ancient Order of Hibernian's 1748 State St. and starts at 7:30. The Ancient Order of Hibernians hall, is just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. To find the Ancient Order of Hibernians, take State Street toward Albany. It is on the right side approximately 4 ½ blocks past the Rt 7 overpass. From the Thruway, take I-890 to Rt 7 East, exit Rt 7 at State Street (Rt 5). Turn right at the top of the ramp and go East 4 ½ blocks. From the Troy direction, take Rt. 7 all the way to State Street (Rt 5) and turn left at the top of the ramp and go 4 ½ blocks to 1748 State St on the right. Election of Officers and Ice Cream Social April 18 Our annual election of officers and board members meeting also features an ice cream social to usher in the new paddling season. This is the official business meeting of the Club and is a time to allow our long serving leaders some time off by filling the roles (elected and volunteer) with new blood. Many volunteers performing critical club functions have requested a reprieve or an interest in another activity. We need your help in volunteering - or you to nominate a friend. Better yet, the work is most fun when shared and you and a friend or spouse can share a club function. Contact Bill Schaefer by phone ( ) or ( williamschaefer@gmail.com) for more information. You can also ask any board member, or volunteer. The meeting will start at 7:30 at the Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall at 1748 State St., Schenectady. See directions above. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS April 3 Hike Thacher Park, Nature Center to High Point April 4 Biking in Provence with the Kornrumpfs April 13 & 14 Bicycle Tour of the Battenkill volunteers April 18 Annual Meeting Elections and Ice Cream May 2 First SWC bicycle ride of the season May 3-5 Spring work party at the Clubhouse Gina and Bill at the top of Mt. Ventoux France Thursday Night 2013 Bike Rides Our season is about to begin on May 2 although we do not yet have someone to host the first ride. Your bike ride coordinator has not exactly been organized thus far this year. He will be getting out and beating the bushes, but, please don t wait for him to call you. That way you get the first shot at picking a date YOU want. Remember that biking is an excellent form of aerobic exercise and it is a great way to keep in shape for next year s snow season. As you can see from the article inside, not many hosts have already signed up for their favorite Thursday. There are still many slots that are unfilled. We want to thank all the hosts who have or will volunteer to lead a ride. Please call Terry ( ) to volunteer and don t wait for him to call you or your favorite date may be taken. Your fellow club members will really appreciate it. See inside Chatter for biking details and directions to the rides. Needed: New Ski Ticket Seller for 13/14 Season Do you have 5 minutes per day? The system has been simplified and the ticket buyers are pleasant and cooperative. What more could you ask for? Help the club and take this over for a year or two. Bill will be happy to assist the new person who would like to take this on. You have the flexibility to modify/update the program to make it even better. Contact Bill Schaefer ( ) or a Board Member to find out more. 1

2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 4/1/13 Presidents Column by Pete Weykamp I've skied a lot of places this past month and slept in a lot of different beds, but there is none finer than my own. I've traveled a thousand miles, saw some strange sites, ate gourmet and meet some great folks. My only regret is missing the Chatter deadline last month and maybe disappointing my one reader. After a week of real winter in Lake Placid, where the winds were whipping at Whiteface, I was invited by Tourism Quebec to join a Fam Tour to the Laurentians. Fam Tours (familiarization tours) are typically geared toward tour organizers and travel agents. Tours typically center around a particular interest. There are Fam Tours for beach vacationers, opera buffs, scuba divers, and fortunately for me, ski club officials. This Fam Tour started in the La Manoir Saint-Sauveur, where I met representatives from Ski Quebec and six other ski clubs. The others were from the Glendon Ski Club (Toronto), Piccadilly SC (Chicago), Chicago Ski Council, Adirondack Mountain Club (Manhattan Chapter), Farlow Hill SC (Boston), and Fund Bank SC (Washington DC). Our ski itinerary began with morning runs at Ski Morin Heights, then too soon interrupted by lunch at Creperie l'armorique (crepes of course), followed by a horse drawn carriage ride (during which we were introduced to a local favorite drink called Carabou (sold out at the Duty Free) to a tubing complex (enormous ) and a quick trip through the Laurentian Ski Museum (featuring our own Jack Rabbit Johansen-Smith). After another gourmet meal we got in some night skiing at Mont Saint-Sauveur. The next day we woke up at Hotel Mont- Gabriel, an old hunting lodge situated on top of a hill. Ski Mount Saint Gabriel frequently hosts Wold Cups Freestyle events. That afternoon we left for Tremblant but not without another gourmet surf & turf luncheon at Le Grand Lodge situated on the shores of Lac.. (the manager is training for the Iron Man contest held in Tremblant). Finally on day three we got a full day of skiing on half a mountain. The south side of 2 Tremblant was on wind hold all day. So we took the bus over the north side and skied The Edge ()he best tree skiing on the mountain). Take Emotion for a warm up and then jump carefully through tress in Sensation. The run out is through more trees almost all the way back to the lift. I'm finishing this Word from the clubhouse. It's Club Week at Stowe. We were expecting cold, hard moguls, scraped pistes, and seasonal temperatures. Instead we got 30 mph winds, 5 degree temps at the top and 8 of snow, 36 in the troughs on Chinclip I kid you not. Friday was clear and blue and calm. We tried to get a good handle on where the wind dropped all the snow. Was it in the woods and are they skiable? So we went in to Angel Food to find out. And Lordy, Lordy, there is was., Blower pow, untracked and inviting. Apparently the other clubs don't go in there. What a blast. In the evening, after a hearty meal, (thanks to the hosts) we regaled each other with stories of our exploits and plans for the next outing. Bon Ski. Battenkill Bicycle Race Volunteers We need your help this year! Last year, 10 SWCers volunteered at the Tour of the Battenkill bicycle race and the Club has received a check for $300 as thanks for the assistance. We want to thank the 10 SWCers for their time and help both to the Battenkill and SWC. This year the Battenkill is on April 13 & 14. Volunteer positions range from corner marshals to wheel drivers who carry spare wheels for the racers and follow each category of rider. Bill Kornrumpf will be coordinating the SWC volunteers. The Club will only be able to get credit for the volunteers if Bill sends in the list so give him a call at or at wkornrum@nycap.rr.com so he can send in our list of volunteers. This is a great way to see some of the countries best bicycle riders and raise $300 for the club at the same time. Bill now or go to the Battenkill volunteer web site and register to volunteer. Make sure you fill in the blank that asks for the Civic Group or Not-for-Profit Organization you wish to donate to as the Schenectady Wintersports Club. You can volunteer to work either Sat or Sunday and if you put in two shifts, we get two credits

3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 4/1/13 Clubhouse News by Sandy Leith Journal from the SWC House: Mar 15 As my guests stir this morning they notice a dusting of snow on the cars outside. Folks are here because Stowe is having club appreciation days for 5 days. Everyone is talking about hard packed trails and less then desirable conditions due to the rain from earlier in the week. But off to the mountain they all go, knowing that any day on the mountain is better than a day at work. When the crew returned in the evening I thought they were speaking of a miracle! The dusting at the house was ? depending on where you skied and who was talking.bottom line, the skiing was great and just about fixed the damage the rain had done. The very next day was beautiful blue bird cold but there was another few inches and fresh tracks in the woods. As people come and go from my walls I hear that there is still many weeks of skiing left in the season. They are talking about the 63 depth at the Mansfield stake. Many are thinking of spring skiing trips to work on those bump turns and making shopping list for grilling on the back deck. You too may plan to come enjoy Vermont in the spring for many warm days and soft snow. See you at the house!! So come on up and visit me!! 4 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 4/1/13 Skiing 2012/2013 Well, as this season draws to a close, I think that we can look back on it with fond memories. We started with good snow, had no January thaw and ended it April, unlike last year. The Stowe Club days brought a number of like-minded skiers to the Club House and Bob Wright s trip to Utah was enjoyable as ever. Stowe continues to hand out surprises like fresh, soft, natural snow bumps on Goat in January to a blizzard in February and a mountain storm in March to make up for rain a couple of days before. But our Club is not all about skiing at Stowe and Utah, it covers a wide variety of mountains like Gore, Whiteface, Magic, Bromley, Stratton, Killington and Mt. Snow. Throughout the season there were reports from each of these areas passed along during our Thursday Members meetings and other get togethers. With over 20 days on the slopes this year, I feel that it was a great season. While most memories were great, one left me a little chagrined. Late December, on Council Cheap ski day, Gore reported getting about a half a foot of fresh snow the night before. I had that day off from work and took off early from my house to make the best of it. As is the case a lot of times, this trip took a little bit of faith to start as it was raining in Schenectady. And it rained all the way up the Northway. It rained all the way up to North Creek. It was still raining as I turned onto the Gore access road. Then, half way up the access road, the snow gods woke up and changed it all to snow. Yes, it was snowing in the parking lot and on the mountain. It was going to be a great day after all. Yes! Yes! I yelled to no one in particular as I parked the car. As the engine stopped turning, I hopped out, ran to the back, popped open the hatch, pulled out my skis and poles and boot bag; everything was there. This was going to be some of the best early season skiing in a long time. But, something was missing at first I wasn t sure what it was, I just had a really uneasy feeling. Skis, poles, boots, gloves, socks and helmet were all there and I was wearing the rest of my ski cloths What caused that feeling? As I was about to close the hatch and just shrug off that feeling I realized what made me feel like I was missing something. I was missing something, My ski jacket! Oh this was not good. Could I ski in just a fleece? Would I stay dry and warm enough with that wet snow coming down? Only one way to find out go skiing. And it was a great day. Hope your season was memorable too. Jon Skalwold. March Stowe Club Days What? You weren t there? Did the rain on Tuesday scare you away? Well you weren t the only one who watched the weather forecast, hoping and praying that the Snow Gods would take over from the weather men and the predictions would change. But no, that didn t happen and rains came. However, there were still a bunch of us who braved the rains to see what the VT North Country had to offer in the way of winter time recreational enjoyment. Wednesday morning saw about 11 hungry souls for breakfast and we all scattered to different areas to see what was to be found; some to Sugarbush on the free Warren Miller pass and some to Stowe to take advantage of their spectacular Club Day prices. Well the mountains did what they could and dished up many a fast groomed run; more like a chilly January day than March, but fun was to be had. More people showed up to the Club House that day and dinner expanded to a second row of tables. Thursday started out gray, but Stowe was reporting 1-2 inches of new snow. Well that was something to look forward to. The real surprise waited to greet us when we arrived in the Stowe parking lot a full fledged mountain storm was raging. By the time we got our boots on, the mountain was reporting 3 5 inches of new snow and we took to the slopes with smiles on our faces. By the end of the day over 8 came down; lower Hayride had about 10 of new snow. Fresh tracks were to be found all over the mountain. The next day, the report back from Sugarbush was over a foot of new and untracked snow was to be found at Mt. Ellen. You never know what these mountains will offer up unless you are there. As always the Club House was warm and cozy, with great food every night and morning and with a fire in the fire place; there was even corn beef and cabbage on Saturday night in honor of St. Patty s day. Conversations were going everywhere with many centered on how much fun each person had that day, including stories from several people who went cross country skiing. The real treat were the several families that were there with their young children our next generation of Club members. It was nice to hear the laughter and pitterpatter of small feet in the morning. Funny, though, how all of that disappears when the pancakes and bacon hit the plates. Thanks to all of the volunteers Jon, Lat, Cathy and Rick who hosted these days and bought this all together and to everyone who was there and helped out, which is what makes SWC such a great Club to be a part of. Until we get together again, enjoy. 4

This is a volunteer organization and with any activity there is a presumption of risk. Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety. Bring ample food and water, dress appropriately. Saturday, April 13 - Join us for a hike sponsored by Thacher Park Nature Center to High Point. Enjoy woodland wildflowers and beautiful views from the cliff on an easy to moderate hike to High Point. We will hike the 3 mile Fred Schroeder Memorial Trail. Be prepared for muddy feet and cool mountain morning air. Please call Cecilia MacDonald at or John Rack at by Friday to sign up. The people at the park would like a list of hikers in advance. If you haven't been on this trail, it s a very good outing to get you ready for spring and summer hiking. Meet at the Nature Center at 9:50. Plotterkill Preserve John Rack continues to lead fairly easy hikes in Plotterkill Preserve and other nearby venues on weekdays. If you are interested in joining him, call to get details. He is flexible about day and time, so be ready for a nearby, low-level hike tailored to your specifications. 4/1/13 Covered Dish Supper The weather cooperated and over twenty people joined us at the Scotia Dutch Reformed Church. We were delighted when we arrived and found the tables all had tablecloths and flowers. All we had to do was heat the food, set it up and EAT. Since we are an eating club with an interest in hiking, we all filled our plates, many times, and enjoyed all the goodies. Rambles with Ron was fun. Ron Needle went through his vast supply of slides and put together a fascinating show, mostly covering his time in the Arctic. It was a good way to travel to c-o-l-d places while having all the comforts of a warm room. Ron has a way of talking and making you feel part of the adventure. Since there were also several pictures of hikes from years ago, we enjoyed identifying our dear friends. We thought about all the wonderful companions who were no longer able to join us. They will always be part of the club, with special places in our memories. Thanks, Ron. It was a great way to end a very lovely evening.
