WEB Site: Bicycling in the Netherlands The Kornrumpfs April 3 rd (and Gina's complimentary home baked cookies) Gina and Bill will be showing slides of their bike tour through the Netherlands in the middle of the Tulip season. There will be pictures and stories of hundreds of acres of beautiful tulips and spinning wind mills. The trip coincided with the annual tulip show in the famous Keukenhof Gardens, the largest flower garden in Europe. The gardens are a flower exhibition where growers from all over the Netherlands and Europe show off their hybrids and help the Dutch export industry. The trip also coincided with the annual Windmill Festival when most of the windmills still in operating condition are started and open for tourists. The meeting will be at the Ancient Order of Hibernian's 1748 State St. The meetings are now featuring an early start at 6:00 for an informal get together with members and new folks before the start of the formal meeting at 7:00. Ancient Order of Hibernians, 1748 State St. is just east of Rt 7 (the Cross town) in uptown Schenectady. To find the Ancient Order of Hibernians take State Street toward Albany. It is on the right side about 4 ½ blocks past the Rt 7 overpass. If coming from the Thruway take I-890 to Rt 7 East and exit at State Street (Rt 5). Turn right at the top of the ramp and go East 4 ½ blocks. From the Troy direction, take Rt. 7 all the way to State Street (Rt 5) and turn left at the top of the ramp and go 4 ½ blocks to 1748 State St. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS April 1 Cross Country to Santanoni great camp April 3 Meeting: Bill & Gina Kornrumpf Biking in the Netherlands April 4-6 Stowe Club Appreciation Day (cheap skiing) April 5&6 Tour of the Battenkill bike race (need volunteers) see article page 2 April 17 Annual Election Meeting and Ice Cream Social May 3-5 Clubhouse work party May 7 First Thursday Bicycle Ride of the Season May 31 Dues are Due These are the Last Meetings Our meetings will go on hold till September after the two April meetings. Election of Officers and Ice Cream Social at the April 17 th Meeting SWC has one official business meeting each year, the elections of officers and other official business is handled at this meeting. Just to make sure that we have a good turn out, this meeting also features an Ice Cream Social with multiple choices of flavors and toppings. So come to the meeting and see what is scheduled for the summer and vote on the important business of the Club. The following motion will be introduced at the meeting: The dues shall be increased by $5 per year resulting in $25 for a single membership and $35 for a family membership. The last time the dues were increased was in 2006, eight years ago. The Club has been experiencing negative cash flows for the last few years and needs to reverse the flow so the board has recommended a dues increase. The following slate of officers will be presented at the meeting. Nominations from the floor will be accepted. Dorie Valenti, Pres Judy Brandow, VP Administration Joe Nicolella, VP Nordic George Astle, VP Activities Dan Kirkpatrick VP-Alpine NNYP President, Open Keith Freeman, Secretary Rolf Guendel, Treasurer Bill Schaefer, At Large Marilyn Mattice, At Large John Rack, Mohawk Valley Hiking Club The meeting will be held at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 1748 State St., Schenectady Thursday Night 2013 Bike Rides Our season begins on May 1 with a ride hosted by Holly Hawkes and Rich Vertigan from Holly's house in Burnt Hills. This year I have already been out beating the bushes to get May filled up. If there is a date that you would like to host a ride, be sure to give me a call ASAP. That way you have a better chance picking a date YOU want. You already know that biking is an excellent form of aerobic exercise and it is a great way to keep in shape for next year s snow season. It is also a good time to take an evening ride and then have some pizza and beer or other delicacy your host might come up with afterward. Although some slots are taken, there are still quite a few that are unfilled. I want to thank all the hosts who have or will volunteer to lead a ride. Please call me (Terry) at to volunteer. Your fellow club members will also really appreciate it. See inside Chatter for biking details and 1 directions to the rides.

2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 4/1/14 Presidents Column by Dorie Valenti Snow Days and the Old Helderberg Ski Area Snow and snowstorms and falling snow and blizzards of snow and sunny blue sky days wakes up the sleeping child in some of us and we can remember our childhood days, how drifts and mounds of white snow blanketed the East, and how we climbed the snowbanks onto flat roofs and jumped off into mountains of soft snow, and how we formed families of snowmen and snowgirls in our yards, and how we found the sledding hills and met at the top with our sleds and flying saucers and toboggans on snow days that lasted for days. We owned a six person toboggan! Six! My dad would wax the bottom of the toboggan and set it down on the top of the hill and place me in the front, just in front of him, for I was the youngest and the only girl, and he'd grab a hold of the ropes and direct all the boys to squish in behind him for if we lost a boy or two on the way down, surely no one would care and we'd push off and I'd close my eyes real tight afraid that we might hit a tree that didn't exist for miles around us as we glided down the hill going 90 miles a hour, and the snow! Flying over us and I'd hear the laughter of the boys losing their grip and tumbling off the toboggan, rolling down the hill. I wish it would snow like this every winter. This year the day after one of the big storms, I took my AT skis and put on the skins and loaded them along with my blind dog in the car and drove up to Thacher Park to check out the old Helderberg Ski Area. This was where Mrs. Waterhouse taught the kids from the Voorheesville-Altamont areas how to ski. She was about 100 years old back then according to the memories of the folks she taught; she must be close to way over 200 by now. Of course, there were no lifts or rope tows to haul the kids up the mountain, and no one stuck skins to the bottom of their skis, only side steps and herringbones brought the adventurers to the top, and in the lean to which still stands today parents and neighbors would roast hot dogs over an open fire and pour hot chocolate for the kids and sweeten the cups with nips of spirits for themselves. The best skiers hiked all the way up to the top and skiing down from the top meant you were destined to be a Warren Miller extreme skier and the community of neighbors and onlookers would watch in awe. What the heck, I thought on this blue sky day. I've hiked to the top during the snowless seasons and hiked back down, and from the bottom of the trail, I could see the top. How hard could it be to skin up and ski down? Skinning up was easy. It's really easy if you take the long way around, and skiing down, well, as Warren Miller commented, putting on a pair of skis and going anywhere on them is extreme. Tour of the Battenkill April 5 & 6 SWC needs your Help The Club and Tour of the Battenkill bike race need your help. For every 10 SWC people who sign up to volunteer at the TOB the organizer gives SWC a check for $300. Last year we had 15 volunteers and only needed 5 more to make it to $600. Sign up at the TOB website and make sure to list SWC as your club. The website is: They need drivers who carry spare wheels and officials and corner workers who direct traffic at intersections. The drivers receive gas money. Your Editor and wife have volunteered for the last 5 years and plan on being there again this year. It is great fun to see 2,000 bikers all trying to finish a hilly 62 mile race partially (20%) on gravel. President & VP at Helderburg I Need More Photos Your editor needs photos of events so all of our members can see what has been happening during the year. Send them in an or directly from your smart phone. Just remember to send them in a Large format as the phones truncate them too small for 2 publication.

3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 4/1/14 Clubhouse News by Terry Tamer Words from our Director: Well, I have been predicting doom & gloom the past couple of Chatters regarding the financial situation of the Lodge. Rolf Guendel, our new Treasurer, recently sent an to us to let us know that we finally went into the black with the debits versus credits area of our Lodge budget. Nevertheless, we're still not out of the hot water because of the new $16,000 roof leaving us $15,500 in the hole. What he reported on was only one point in time. Lots of big bills are coming in and we will inevitably slip back into the red column. For one thing, we need a new furnace, which we must purchase before winter. We've been doing some things the right way, though. Many of you good folks have come forward to volunteer to be weekend lodge chairpersons quite consistently during February and March. Some, (thank you Martha and Kirby) not only have sponsored the weekend but also have brought up a good sized group of people to use the Lodge. We have had entire cheap ski weeks where we ve had Lodge Chairs and there was good usage. (Thank you Jon, Lat and John.) In general, usage has been up. That is good news. Judy has been doing a yeoman s job of the bookkeeping. She has persistently gone after some who, for one reason or another, have neglected to pay for their stay. (For as little as we charge, why would ANYONE have a hard time paying their bill in a timely manner?) She has been quite successful in bringing in unpaid lodge usage fees. However, the high usage season is about over. We will soon be going into the warm weather doldrums in which funds won t be coming in although we will still have to pay expenses. Therefore, I can almost guarantee that lodge usage fees will go up. They will still be reasonable but it costs more already. Now, I d like you - yes, YOU - to think about how you could use the Lodge in warmer weather. Do you have any friends who might like to join you for a few days, either on a weekend or during the week, at an activity in beautiful Vermont during the springtime or summer? We used to have a Spring Fling weekend every year. You can have hiking, paddling, biking days up there. There have been moss (lichen) groups but there could be birdwatching days too. I ve been up there when we went to antique car festivals. Did you know that Stowe also has music festivals with Classical, Folk and other kinds of music. Could you get a group of friends to go up and enjoy something like that? While doing such an event, you could also publicize it in the Chatter/Blade/ MVHC newsletter and possibly bring somebody new into your fold. Can anyone ever have enough friends to do stuff with? It also doesn t have to be winter to earn vouchers for free stays at some future time. To paraphrase Auntie Mame, The Lodge is a feast but most folks don t know enough to keep from starving to. One more thing. I want to thank those who have stepped up to the plate and volunteered this past season to be Lodge Chairpersons. In some cases, you ll see that two persons shared the duties. Only one of them got credit for it. Thank you to: 3 Gina and Bill Kornrumpf Walt Kangas Rick Cobello and Cathy McCabe Sandy Costanzo & Marc Wegener (first timers) Bob Toran (also a newbie) Dan Kirkpatrick Jon Skalwold Kate Storms (also a first timer & a bird watcher) Sandy and Wes Culver Ann Seyse (her dad helped recruit her at a time when she was doing the Stowe Derby) Martha and Kirby VanVleet John Bidell Lat Schmidt Pete Weykamp. Everybody cooperated, nobody complained and I am VERY appreciative of their support. THANK YOU. When you see any of them, please, thank them too. Finally, there are others who may not have been up there but who have made the Lodge matters run very smoothly. Specifically, they are Bill Kornrumpf, Judy Brandow, Rolf Guendel, Bill Schaefer, Gina Kornrumpf, Sandy Culver and Dorie Valenti of the Lodge Committee. None of them nor anybody on the Board get any free stay at the Lodge and they put in a LOT of work to keep the place going. Thank you to them and, please thank them if you see them. Clubhouse Work Party 5/3-5 There will be a clean up/paint up/fix up work party at the Clubhouse May 3-5 this year. We plan on some painting, minor repairs, basement cleaning, heat duct installation and a small amount of electrical work. In addition, there is the grounds work with winter destruction repair, yard work, and the ongoing recovery of our back 40. We have a number of other jobs that need doing as well. There will be a chance to stay over on Monday and do some biking, hiking or paddling (or some of each) with others who can get the time off. Call Gina or Bill on to let them know you are coming and find out what kind of tools you should be bringing. Make Summer Clubhouse Reservations The Clubhouse reservation system will still be on line for our summer season. It is important that folks who are planning on using the house make reservations so that others will know what to expect when they arrive. We have had folks think that they were staying in their favorite rooms (and had reserved that room) find the room filled when they arrive. This is a situation that is easy to avoid if everybody just takes the time to make a reservation before they start the drive north. Please make reservations on line or by calling Tom Jaras ( ) for ANY STAY that you are planning for the Waterbury Center Clubhouse. Since people show up at different hours it is necessary to make reservations all year long and to check where others are staying before you arrive so that everyone gets the room they have reserved and there isn t confusion and awkward walking in on sleeping folks.

What? It s snowing at Stowe again? That wasn t predicted. Well, at least not in the amount the mountain received. Now, tell me, how does a prediction of 4 to 5 of snow turn into 8 to 12 on the mountain? This was the mountain s report when we woke up in the morning. Yup, it was there, every inch of it. And then it snowed all day long. It is terrible to be so deceived ha, ha, everyone said, grinning from ear to ear. This is snow you only get in Utah someone in the Gondola said. Wait, but this is Vermont, in March. A day to go into the memory books someone else said. Knee deep powder; no, it was waist deep powder. Well, that argument didn t last long as someone else interject their experience from that day in the evening s discussion. This was all after getting a miss-prediction weather forecast for the day before and we started the day with 5 to 8 of new snow on the mountain. What a way to bring the season to a close. The Ski Club Appreciation days at Stowe are tough to take when the conditions are that good. To digress a little, it all started with relatively quiet day on Wednesday in mid-march. Some of Club members went to Surgarbush, courtesy of Warren Miller Movie passes. It was a good day, but the cold of prior days had the snow pretty well setup and some of the best skiing was natural snow trails, which meant skiing runs that were bumped up. Stowe was said to be equally as good. Then came the surprise of 5 of new snow in the morning on Mansfield on Thursday, followed up by the 8-12 of new snow in the morning on Friday, with more during the day. Saturday was a pleasant day with a 2 dusting to end the day. Did I mention that someone said the snow was waist deep in the trees? Well, that is what about 40 SWC'ers who decided to venture up to the Club House had to suffer though for their skiing pleasure. Needless to say there were ear to ear smiles all around each evening. But, then again, it could have been the great food they all just finished - courtesy of Clubhouse hosts Jon Skalwold, Lat Schmidt and John Bidell and all of the people there who all pitched in and made things go smoothly. Either way, it was 5 great days of inexpensive ($35/day) skiing during the day and great company in the evening. And, yes, I found at least knee deep powder that day and that was just on the trails Jon Skalwold. [Editor's Note] There is another Ski Club Appreciation days at Stowe 4/4-6 with really cheap skiing and maybe with spring conditions. This is the year to put down the golf clubs and keep on skiing till the mountain closes. The Unofficial Northern NY Canoe Camp took place the weekend of March 8/9, on Fish Creek. There were 5 C-2's, and 2 C-1's that took part. A great turn out, on a very nice 40+ degree, sunny day. Paddlers came from all over the state and Vermont. Ben, Mary, Fran, and Joe Schlimmer, Jeff Pedersen, Neal Sand, Bob Fischer, Pam and Briana Fitzgerald, Becky Sutter, and Gary McLain. Some of the group started in about 9 am to get a longer workout in, with the rest of the group going out at 10:30. Everyone paddled until 1:30 or so, getting a good 3+ hours in for the first paddle of the year. The early group ended up with 4.5 hrs on the day! The water was perfect, all conditions available! We saw a Bald Eagle, turtle, otter, and we paddled up to about 200 yards from a guy who was ice fishing out of his (noncompact) car! As we paddled you could hear the ice along the edge of the lake cracking and breaking off. It was challenging to the C-1 guy's as they had to dodge it in some places, as they followed behind. It was a Great way to start the year, lots of fun was had, and even some pain! I had the pleasure of partnering with Ben Schlimmer and we paddled really hard, lots of "popping it up" and pick up sprints! We were all really tired at the end of Sat., but 4 of us went back out Sunday! Steve Burton joined me and we paddled with Jeff P., and Neal S. For about 2.5 hours. Steve and I had to stop 15 mins early as I was beat! What a way to start the year, 7 hrs in 2 days, and in very early March! 8 Thurs., Feb SNOW! Beautiful, but not a night to hold a covered dish supper. Much as we hated to call it off, we decided it was better to be safe than sorry. Didn't we say that last month? Two weeks in a row convinced Jane and me to once again decide the weather was not optimal for a dinner. We cancelled it for this year and next year we'll have it in a less snowy month. We missed everyone and hope you all had a good night. Please call leader in advance; weather and other factors may cause changes. Please, no pets on any hike as a courtesy others. This is a volunteer organization and with any activity there is a presumption of risk. Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety. Bring ample food and water, dress appropriately. 4/1/14 Sunday, April 6, Catch a fabulous exhibit at the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, which includes Ansel Adams, and the American triumvirate of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Paul Strand, early masters of fine art photography. There is also a continuous showing of an hour-long documentary on Ansel Adams that we'll want to see. On the way home we'll stop for an easy walk at the Ora Phelps Nature Preserve and maybe have dinner. Call for meeting place and time, probably the Exit 9 Park and Ride at eleven. Leader, Ruth Hasler STRANGE FACTS From Ron Neadle Tuesday, April 1, We will ski into Santanoni Great Camp. Meet at exit 9 at the Park and Ride lot at 9:00 AM. Call Joe Nicolella at for signup and further information. Dogs and cats consume over $11 billion worth of pet food a year! Every second, Americans collectively eat one hundred pounds of chocolate! Honolulu is the only place in the United States that has a royal palace! 8
