Nov 13 Meeting The Nov 13 th meeting is at the Ancient Order of the Hibernian Hall on State Street, Sch dy. Combined Leaf Peeper/Paddlers/First Time Clubhouse Visitors Weekend Oct There was some confusion on the dates this year. As a result, these weekends are combined. At the writing of this article, all rooms are reserved except for a few single spaces. Enjoy Vermont's Autumn foliage or a paddle on the reservoir. Ray is planning an Italian night for Saturday evening and Bill will put the BBQ to work for Sunday night. We would especially like to invite and welcome "first timers" to the Clubhouse to see the place and enjoy the Vermont fall experience. Be on your own or we will share the best views we have discovered in the area. Your days will be free to roam the Vermont countryside, visit Ben & Jerry's, walk, hike, bike ride, or just relax and have lunch at one of the area restaurants. Bill, Ray & Anna will be hosting the extended weekend from Friday night to Monday with meals on Sat, Sun and Mon morning. Contact Bill wschaefe@nycap.rr.com or Ray timetoskiswc@aol.com for details.

2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 10/1/08 President's Corner: by Bill Schaefer For those who missed the 75 th Anniversary Party and have heard what a great party, it was and we promise we will have another great anniversary in 25 years. The weather was terrific in spite of it not being predicted and the food was outstanding. While many ski areas are not attractive off season, Maple Ski Ridge was a beautiful setting. As I reflect on the places this party could have held, few places could have been a more appropriate choice. Why? The obvious is we are a club whose roots started with winter activities and Maple Ski Ridge happens to be in Schenectady. Additionally, almost everyone local says they learned to ski at Maple - or brought their kids to Maple. Of them almost all had lessons with Freddie Andersen of the Sch dy Ski School. And if you have not heard, Freddie s roots go back to the start of the club with the earliest trips to North Creek on the Ski Trains. This anniversary celebration was fortunate to have so many connections to its past. Much memorabilia was displayed along with continuous showing of the old movies, many of which were recently moved from films to DVD. On display was a recently discovered professional photo collection recently discovered by a member. These 75+ photos were quite impressive. I will report more on this in another article. The party guest of honor was local downhill ski racer Chris Beckmann. If you have not heard about Chris, you are not reading Bill Rice s ski column in the Gazette. Chris is a US Ski Team member and our top contender for downhill gold in the next Olympics. Chris came to the party straight from the airport after summer ski training in Chile. Chris shared with us what it to be currently takes to be on the team. I extend the Clubs appreciation to the party organizers Bill and Gina Kornumpf, Mary Kurkandal, Jan Elliot, Mary Andersen. Support our Local Racer Chris Beckmann by Bill Schaefer I announced at the anniversary party that we would like to support Chris s efforts any way we can. This was motivated by understanding our clubs tradition of supporting local racers dating back to Dot Hoyt before WWII. At the party, I received an anonymous donation $100 donation toward the start of the Chris Beckam fund. This is your chance to support the US Olympic effort on a local and personal level. Your donation to the racing fund is 100 percent tax deductible. Contact Bill Schaefer or a board member. Read about Chris Coming Events to Remember Snow Show - 11/ 7, 8, 9 The Annual Times Union Snow Show at the Empire State Plaza will be Nov 7 to 9 this year. Sign up at the Club Meetings to help man the SWC booth. Warren Miller - Save the Date! New days and times this year for three showings Thursday, Nov 20 at 8 pm Friday November 21 6:30 and 9:30 pm The ticket price is $22 for all shows. As always, the ski deals this year are terrific! There will be free lift tickets for Stratton, Smugglers Notch, Jiminy Peak and Windham Mountain and a retail offer for Ski Market. Be sure to buy your ticket from a club member, as this is our major fundraiser for the year. The more we sell as a Club, the more we make. See our web site, call the SWC hotline , or call Jon Skalwold at for ticket sales information. Attention Parade Lovers (Nov 22) This years Schenectady Holiday Parade is on Nov 22. This date is following The Snow Show and 2 days of the Warren Miller Movie. Member volunteers are needed to organize the parade and float activity. Please contact a board member if you have an interest in participating in the parade. Stowe Ski Club Appreciation Days The Stowe really cheap ski days have been announced so you can make your plans now. Last year the Clubhouse was packed (not quite full but packed) during these times. The dates for this season are: Dec 5-7, Jan 12-14, March Last season the skiing in March was superb with piles of new snow on a massive base. Adult (<65) prices are ~$32/day and senior/junior is only ~$13/day. There is an advantage to outlasting your younger friends. Check the web site for more details. Chris Beckmann 2

YES! We are the team of the century. This coming season, we will melt the spandex off of each and every one of our competitors. Come celebrate the courage and determination of your SWC ski team to rise above all adversity and to carry on, ad infinitum. Shower your team members with accolades of praises at my home, 24 Plymouth Avenue, on October 25th. Festivities will begin at 5:30. 4 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 10/1/08 What s Happening at Maple Ski Ridge Maple Ski Ridge did a spectacular job of hosting our 75th Anniversary party. We would like to let you know what is going on there this fall. Remember their motto: Ski Close, Ski Often. Visit their web site mapleskiridge.com or call New for this year are Season Passes. Where else can you ski less than 15 miles from your home (2 miles for some of us)? Oct 12 Fall Festival Craft Show (Crafter needed) Oct 18 Harvest Tractor Show & Flea Market Oct Haunted Hay Rides Nov 2 Tykes Town Open House (learn about ski programs) SWC Logo Fitness Fleece And other great SWC Things Would you like a fine souvenir of the 75 th Anniversary Party? We are taking orders for SWC monogrammed fleeces. They are great for hanging around or use as a layer in your ski outfit. This year we have several colors. For men: Black, Deep Red, Bottle Blue, Graphite, and Night (navy blue). For women: Black, Deep Red, Dark Plum, Green Tea, Ivory, Sea Blue, and Slate Teal. Cost is $40 and includes a small fund raising contribution to SWC. Call Walt Kangas ( ) with your size and color. To celebrate SWC's 75 th year, we also have SWC decals in two sizes, patches. The larger decals (2.5 inches) are great for helmets and car windows. The smaller (about half size) are great for ski tips, poles, and helmets with limited space for a decal. The decals will help make your equipment unique (easier to find in the ski rack and harder for someone to accidentally take the wrong equipment). They also make good conversation starters while riding the chairlift. The patches can be sewn on jackets and ski bags. Displaying these gets our Club visibility out in the world and helps recruit new members. The Fleece is from LL Bean and have the SWC Logo embroidered on the chest. Large decals are $3, small decals are $1 and the patches are $3. See Walt Kangas at some event or you can send a self-addressed stamped envelope; listing those items you want, with a check made out to SWC to the address below. Mark the envelope - SWC Goodies and include your phone number in case Walt has questions. This is a great way to start the season. The clinic includes a 3 day lift ticket, 3 nights lodging at the Stowe Motel on the Mountain Road and lessons from Friday noon till Sunday noon. For those who are race minded there is a friendly competition in the NASTAR course on Sunday afternoon. This clinic is for all abilities in alpine skiing and snowboarding (telemark instruction is not available) from never-ever skiers to recreational skiers to racers. This is one of the few times that instruction is also available for top-level experts including the racers. All can improve their skiing in this clinic. The cost is $255 for the lift tickets, lodging and lessons. There is an additional $5 fee for the race on Sunday, if you race. There is a welcome party to start the clinic off right. Call Bomber ( ) or (iceanderson@nycap.rr.com) early to sign up. You need to send in a $50 deposit to hold your reservation. His roster is frequently filled by the end of October so contact him now. 5 NNYP Event Kudos All six major NNYP paddling undertakings went off successfully in This includes the Towpath Regatta, the Electric City Regatta, the Barge Chaser, the Wednesday Night Time Trials, the Monday night Paddles at Kiwanis Park, and the monthly Monday Potluck dinners. Thanks to all the many people that arranged, worked on, and participated in these events. Let s look forward to next year. Paddlers' Weekend October How does this sound? A fabulous picnic lunch on the shore, surrounded by myriad autumn colors reflected on the clear waters of the Waterbury Reservoir. You could be a part of this on Paddlers Weekend October Call Bill and Karen Schaefer on for reservations. They are hoping to hear from you soon. But wait, there s more, much more. There is some talk that Ray might be putting some sort of Italian spread together on Saturday night. And Anna Dugan (adugan@nycap.rr.com or ) is spearheading an impromptu potluck at the Lodge on Friday evening. As an inducement, she is offering one bottle of wine, if folks will be interested in adding to that. The thought is it could be a little like the Monday potlucks at Kiwanis Park. Usually, Friday evening is on our own, but she sees no reason why people couldn t get together, if they'd like. Back to Saturday, In the event of rain, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area, including a great aquarium in Burlington, possible indoor tennis at Stowe, and games or relaxing in the cozy fireplace room at the House. Sunday may include the Elmore State Park for paddling, hiking, and biking; then lunch at Park Squeeze, which is the greatest (and most delicious) bargain around, located on the way home in Vergennes. Report From The Allagash Four NNYP members paddled the 96-mile desolation trail on the Allagash River of northernmost Maine. The trip started on August 25, and we were 5 days on the water during which time we only saw 15 people (there were many more in July). The group consisted of Terry Tamer, Donnie Patneaude, Patti Pratt, and Allan Foster. 5 Oct 1, 2008 I don t know how many of you were paying attention to the weather in Maine, but for the two months before the trip, Maine had been clobbered with rain some days with 6. A month before our trip, the water flow had set a 78-year record of 28000cfs, compared with the 700cfs normal for late August. We ran it at a good level of 1600cfs. This transformed the final day into a number of shallow Class 1-2 rapids, as opposed to the areas where you frequently had to drag your canoe. Another factor was high wind on Day 1, which produced beaucoup whitecaps on the large entry Chamberlin Lake. We felt it wiser to pitch our tents and wait for the wind to drop which it did the next day. It was only after the trip that we found out there is an unadvertised second entry point to the waterway, and we could have skipped Chamberlin entirely. Now we know!! Actually, the weather after Day 1 was perfect for canoeing - and the rain held off until one hour after we had put all our gear in the cars on Day 5. The Allagash, after the initial Chamberlin Lake, is largely beautiful, unspoiled rivers and streams. I saw only one piece of garbage the whole time. And kudos to Terry for arranging the food none of us lost weight. A good time was had by all four we rightfully called it an adventure. Terry Tamer, Patti Pratt, Donnie Patneaude (and Allan Foster) were left wondering how these steam engines ever got to this remote spot on the Allagash.

6 The BLADE A Publication of SWC/NNYP Oct 1, 2008 Keep The News Coming Remember, loose lips sink ships. We want our reporters to have the loosest of all we don t care whether there is an ounce of truth to it! Water sport write-ups, photos, jokes, stories, etc. or activities that might interest the group (like hiking, theater, etc) are fine. Send to Allan Foster: adfos@aol.com, 379 McCormack Rd, Albany, NY 12208, by the 12th of month. Put NNYP, SWC or Blade in the subject title line so I don t Spam you, and pictures should be less than 100Kb. Club Canoe Availability Remember that we (SWC/NNYP) have canoes, paddles, PFD s, and one kayak for use by members: 18 6 Wenonah CC 18 6 Lincoln CC 18 6 Sawyer CC 18 5 Alumicraft 12 Acadia Kayak These boats may be borrowed by Club members for a $5/day, $25/week donation. They are located at Uncle Donnie Patneaude s house at 741 River Road, Lower Rotterdam Junction (about 0.3 mile from the Kiwanis boat launch ). There are also four canoes for members who are up at the Clubhouse, but no fair using them on Nosedive! Since the availability of life vests (PFDs), is limited, you should bring one along if you have one. STATEWIDE EVENTS/RACES A summary the post-september races run in New York State, and done under the watchful eye of the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association, is shown below. As expected, the racing season is drawing to a close, but the previous ones demonstrated an exciting calendar which combined some new events as well as changes to long-standing ones. If you race canoes or kayaks in New York State, you should probably join NYMCRA. It is a dynamic group, promoting friendly competition and fitness on the water. Call Anna ( ) to help or just do it yourself this summer. Thanks. TripTales(Mohawk Valley Hiking Club) August 16 brought 7 hikers together for a walk on Ryan Rd. trails in Thacher Park. Walking was tricky in some spots due to wet conditions but we managed to cover several trails in a loop which included the Long Path. Thacher Park staff aerated the soil for a long stretch to make walking easier. The sunny day with aromas of thyme, flowers, and pine made for a pleasant outing. Glad you could join us Cecilia, also Keith. Pete, Bev & Rusty Adams Bev A., Keith Bubb, Cecilia M. and guests May 24 brought 5 hikers to the Pember Museum Nature Preserve in Hebron, NY. It was a warm sunny day and trails were good other than 1 bridge which had been washed out. One four footed hiker wanted to take that bridge anyway and then wondered why he did and how to get back. He finally decided it was ok to return "whence he came". There is a nice small stream and some picturesque ponds on our route but alas I forgot my camera. I am attaching photos from a prior Hebron hike. Next we drove to Salem where a village wide sale yielded a tramp art lamp for Bev. Steininger's restaurant provided a cold drink and homemade soups and desserts. Reported by Bev, Pete, and Rusty Adams Thursday Biking The final ride of the season at the Anderson s. Until next year

7 Conservation Report by Henri T. Plant Do you know what biofilms are? Run your tongue across the surface of your teeth and feel the plaque built up on them. That is a biofilm. Slip on a rock when wading in a stream -- biofilm is the culprit. These bacteria just love any kind of surface, including your skin or the surface of a hip or knee replacement. Actually they have been around since life began, and some think it may be how life began. It was believed that bacteria were a singular entity but that is not the case. Once a bacterium finds a happy surface it sends out a chemical message: "Hey guys, this is a great place. Come join me." And they do so by the hundreds. So that is how biofilms start. It has now been found that after the biofilms get together they act as a unit. Another surprise when the bacterium sends out its come join me message, it also invites not only its own kind but other infectious friends which can be kind of a multiple threat to your well being. But all is not negative. These little communal colonies of biofilms can also do all sorts of good and useful things. They have been used by industries for a long time to treat their really nasty waste water. Some biofilms love to attack some of the nasties produced by certain industrial processes. Water treatment plants and your septic system (when properly inoculated with the correct strain of bacteria) actually use biofilms to filter out organic compounds and pathogens. You can be sure that as we know more about biofilms, industries will be stumbling over one another to find ways to exploit it. Thanksgiving Breakfast We are currently preparing for the annual Thanksgiving Breakfast. We need about 6 volunteers on Wednesday, Nov.26 around noon to haul supplies in to the lean-to and that many again for Thursday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 AM to complete the process, start the fire, set up and generally be ready for the hungry Pilgrims who wander in. If we do not have commitments from that many volunteers we will have to skip the breakfast. So please call John Rack at to tell him you will help out on one or both days. 7 10/1/08 This year we are limiting the participants to 50 people. Call Jan Fearing at to reserve your place, and then send your check, $2.50 for adults, $1 for children 12 and under, made out to MVHC, to Jan Fearing 342 Terrace Road Schenectady, NY This is always the highlight of our year, so volunteer and reserve early. Only prepaid people will be served. See you there. Strange Facts Collected by Ron Neadle The fastest racehorse ran over 43mph. A female kangaroo is called a flyer. Manhattan does not have a main street. Please call leader in advance; weather and other factors may cause changes. Please, no pets on any hike as a courtesy to others. This is a volunteer organization and with any activity there is a presumption of risk. Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety. Bring ample food and water, dress appropriately. Hike leaders: Please send your reports to: Cecilia A. MacDonald, 260 Sever Road, Delanson, NY Sunday, October 12 - Beverly and Peter Adams chose an easy to moderate hike in the Beckett Land Trust in Beckett, MA. They will hike to a beautiful quarry lake. To sign up and get particulars on meeting time/place, call Bev or Peter at Sunday, Oct John Rack and Cecilia MacDonald will co-lead a hike to beautiful Merck Forest in Rupert, VT. Hopefully the fall leaves will be in their yearly splendor. Call John at or Cecilia at for meeting time and place.
