WEB Site: The Adirondack Folk School Nov 6 Meeting with Jim Schreiner The Adirondack Folk School (AFS) is the only school of its kind in the country dedicated to teaching the arts, crafts, and culture of the unique Adirondack region in Lake Luzerne. The beauty and natural abundance of this environment influenced the skilled artisans that created the pack basket, twig furniture, birch bark containers, the Adirondack chair and the guide boat. These things are still found in cabins and homes today. AFS teaches the joy of learning through hands-on experiences with local artisans, crafts people, and volunteers interested in promoting and teaching these skills in an environment focused on the student. Their year-round classes range from half-day to multiweek and offer subjects as diverse as birch bark basketry, Adirondack chair building, twig and rustic furniture, caning, paddle making, fly tying, weaving, connecting people with nature, organic gardening, fiber arts, soap making, boat building, pottery, blacksmithing, and more. Students explore their creativity through hands-on learning. Adirondack storytellers and musicians share the culture of the Adirondacks through demonstrations, programs, and fireside gatherings. Jim will tell us about the school and the classes offered that can help us enjoy living in the great North East. He is a skier, a paddler, a rustic furniture maker, and an old friend of SWC. Come out for an interesting program and a fun night of fellowship as we edge closer to our busy ski season. We will have pizza available for $3.00 per person at 6:30. 2 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 11/1/14 Presidents Column by Dorie Valenti Basin Harbor is located on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain just north of Crown Point and if driving to the Clubhouse by way of Crown Point, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, located on Basin Harbor, is almost on the way and if the day is full of rain and wind stopping by this museum will be a nice respite from the elements pounding against the windshield of your car and so we stopped and as we walked through the many buildings looking at the dugout canoes, dug out way back in the 1600s, and read the blurbs about the roles Lake Champlain played in the War of 1812 and Revolutionary War. As we walked onto the gunboat docked in the Harbor we tried to imagine what life was like; the rain poured down around us, a canvas tarp hung over us tenuously tied across half of the boat, keeping us sort of dry, a brick fireplace on the wooden vessel served as the kitchen, a canon, and some smaller guns, and 40 men manned this 53 foot vessel, and ate there and slept there. The men slept sitting up, with their knees folded up to their chests, 3 deep along the side of the boat, the back of one sailor leaning up against the knees of another and so on. All the while, the British bombarded them and they bombarded the British and it would seem hard to sleep in those types of conditions, like sleeping next to a guy who snored would be the least of their concerns and I reached into my pocket and realized I forgot my earplugs. Lois Radke lent me a pair of soft squishy earplugs last February and they worked great! As I dozed off, the snores of the sleepers around me sounded like a train way off in the distance which never came any closer but would fade and come around again as if the locomotive was stuck in some sort of faraway loop. I forgot my earplugs, I said as we walked around one of those old ice sailing boats so popular at the turn of the last century. Look at this! These boats raced across the ice on Lake Champlain at over 100 miles per hour. Needed: New Ski Ticket Seller Bill Schaefer our ticket seller for many years is in the process of building a new house and will not be able to continue as the Ski Ticket seller this year. So, we really need a ticket seller to take over from Bill's capable hands. He has simplified the process with the ability to pay with PayPal and a clientele that now knows that they have to put in their order in time to get the tickets mailed to them. Do you have 5 minutes per day? The system is simplified and the ticket buyers are pleasant and cooperative. What more could you ask? Help the club and take over for a year or two. Bill will assist anybody who volunteers. You have the flexibility to modify/update the sales scheme. Contact Bill Schaefer to find out more. Who knows, you may qualify for a discount on your ticket prices if you volunteer. Warren Miller Movie No Turning Back Friday Nov 7 th & Sat Nov 8 th At the Albany Palace Theater, 8 PM Warren Miller's 2014 film, No Turning Back, pays homage to 65 years of mountain culture and adventure film making. We're taking a legacy that dates back to before skis had edges and we're running with it to every end of the winter world - from the top of the steepest, snowiest peaks and back again to the Mom and Pop hills that define skiing and riding. Since 1949, Warren Miller has known that as skiers and riders there s no need to look back. WME has continuously driven to keep our edge and chase snow, and this year, WME proves that not much has changed. Come experience as WME revels in winter s heritage and pushes the boundaries in Niseko, Japan, the Swiss Alps, Montana, France, and more. See top athletes like Sierra Quitiquit, Rob Kingwill, Ingrid Backstrom, Oystein Aasheim, Seth Wescott, and others continue the Warren Miller legacy in winter sports storytelling. Revel in the celebration this winter season and remember; this time there s No Turning Back. Tickets are on sale now, $23, from SWC. If you order them directly from Warren Miller they will be at least $25.90 so save money and contribute to the club by buying directly from SWC and from Jon Skalwold. Send a self addressed stamped envelope, a note with number of tickets and dates, your address (in case Jon needs to contact you) and a check for the full amount made out to SWC. Mail to Jon Skalwold, 254 Bradley Blvd., Schenectady, NY, The benefits included in the price of a ticket have improved this year to include $20 OFF AT PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS - FREE LIFT TICKETS TO SUGARBUSH, WINDHAM MOUNTAIN, GORE MOUNTAIN, SMUGGLERS NOTCH, STEAMBOAT & 2-FOR-1 LIFT TICKET TO KILLINGTON COMMUNITY WINTER SPORTS EQUIPMENT SALE Nov 22 BURNT HILLS-The 54th annual winter sports sale will be held from 9:00 am to Noon on Saturday, Nov. 22nd at the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 860 Rt. 50. 3 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 11/1/14 Clubhouse News by Bill Kornrumpf Words from our (New) Director: The first thing that I would like to do as the newly appointed Lodge Director is to thank Terry Tamer for his organization and chairing of the Clubhouse Committee this last year. His efforts along with those of Judy Brandow and Rolf Guendel have brought a new focus on the operations of the Clubhouse. Our volunteers stepped up this summer hosting weekends ranging from Bicycling to Antique Car Shows, hiking & Brew Pub inspired weekend. A common thread was the the Clubhouse use as a focal point for outdoor recreation in northern Vermont. Thanks to those who organized and invited their friends up for some great weekends. Our Clubhouse relies on the many contributions of volunteers who make all of this happen. Speaking of making things happen, we are entering the ski season and Terry Tamer will be coordinating the Weekend Hosts this season. Some members have already inquired about hosting their favorite weekends but he needs many more of you to pitch in and host a weekend or holiday period. Remember, Terry is a volunteer like all of us and you can make his job much easier by calling him on and signing up for a host weekend. During the Oct weekend a dedicated group of volunteers installed a new furnace in the north basement. It is a 95% efficient propane fired unit that will save us up to 30% on our fuel bills for the north side furnace. It is the dedication of our volunteers that makes it possible to operate the Clubhouse for all of our members. Our volunteers make the club function well and we all need to thank them everytime you participate in a Club function or enjoy the clubhouse. The past 5 years have been hard on the Clubhouse budget with the expenses of two new furnaces, a new refrigerator and new roof. This has made it necessary to raise the Clubhouse rates this year so that we can start paying back the Club for it's financial support. Please see the new rates article for the details. Finally, the Clubhouse is for all the members of the Club. It is a great place to meet people who enjoy the outdoors and is located in the heart of the best ski resorts in Vermont. We need all of you to make the most use of the Clubhouse that you can. It has been used for more than ski trips, it has seen family reunions, wedding receptions, ice climber gatherings, holiday parties, summer hiking and paddling outings as well as many other uses. Make a plan to use the Clubhouse this winter now. Think Snow Bill Kornrumpf New Clubhouse Rates Announced Over the summer, it became clear that we would need to increase the Clubhouse rates this year. The cost of installing the two new furnaces, new roof and refrigerator has required us to bring in more money to pay back the treasury. After carefully tracking all of the expenses and usage during the last ski season, we have increased the lodging amount by $3 per night while keeping the meals price constant. This has been coupled with generating a significant increse in usage especially in the summer to bring the Clubhouse budget into balance and allow us to build up a capital account that can be used to pay for capital expenses when they occur. The new rates are: Rates: Ski Season Off Season No Host Year Round With Host Lodging Lodging Dinner Members $28.00 $23.00 $10.00 Non-member $33.00 $33.00 $15.00 Juniors (7 to 17 & 18 if in school) $15.00 $10.00 $5.00 Child (less than 7) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00 For this winter, the members cost of a weekend at the Clubhouse will be $66 for two nights lodging, two breakfasts and a great Saturday night's dinner and $81 for non-members. That is still a bargain when conpared with the cost of lodging and meals in a resort village like Stowe. Coupled with our no blackout Stowe tickets, the Clubhouse is a bargain. Make your reservations now for this winter and enjoy all that northern Vermont has to offer. New Furnace Installed A group of 6 volunteers (Steve Dudka, Bill Wertz, Walt Kangas, Bob Tomlinson,Bill Kornrumpf &George Astle) spent the Oct weekend installing a new 95% efficient propane furnace in the north basement. It replaces an old oil furnace that was having reliability difficulties and our oil tanks were showing their age (42 years) as well. As soon as the furnace was finished, the team went to work on a number of smaller tasks, fire wood stacking, the installation of new lighting in the kitchen and removal of the old unused chimney in the dining room. Always make Lodge Reservations We are requiring everybody using the Clubhouse to make reservations on line or by phone. We need to know who is going up to make sure we don't have conflicts over the rooms. Are you computer challenged? Don t know how to make reservations for lodgeing stays online? Just call our friendly volunteer, tom Jaras. His phone number is Tom will make those reservations for you. Just don t forget to thank him. 3 Steve Dudka, George Astel, Bill Kornrumpf, Bill Wertz, Walt Kangas and Bob Tomlinson in front of our new high efficiency furnace

We're fortunate to have volunteers who will do most of the hauling in on Wednesday, but if you want to join them, contact John Rack at Be sure to call John at to reserve your place. Having an accurate count helps John to judge how much food he'll need to buy. It's a big job to make all the preparations, so do call him. Where is Joe? Saturday, Oct There were over 20 people joining for the annual picnic at Kiwanis Park on a sunny, chilly day. Needless to say, the food was yummy and plentiful enough to satisfy even the hungriest of our club. TRIP TALES Sept., 2014 The hike was cancelled due to the leader's injured knee. Luckily it has healed and John, and his knee, are back on the trail again. Tuesday, Oct. 7 - We watched the weather carefully and finally decided to take a chance. We won! The morning was cloudy and we held our breath. As the day progressed, the clouds began to drift away and the sun came out. It was warm and pleasant, the trail covered by leaves and acorns. There were some fairly steep ups and downs, but they were short-lived, and caused no problems. The terrain was varied, the colors brilliant, the company excellent and the leader great. Thanks very much for a wonderful hike, Joe. 9 After eating, some of the group played a few games of bocchi. I think the reds won, but it could have been the blacks. They enjoyed it, no matter who won. Next, five of us drove up a few miles to the latest entrance to Plotterkill Preserve that John discovered this summer. The woodwork was so new and it looked so inviting that we started out in good spirits. We met many young people along the way and were completely confused as to where we were (except for John). When we came to the T in the trail, the light

10 SKI CHATTER A SCHENECTADY WINTERSPORTS CLUB PUBLICATION 11/1/12 bulb finally went on in my head. I realized where this area of Plotterkill actually was. FUN! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is No Blade This Month Sue Knapik our Blade editor is feeling left out this month as nobody sent her any information to put in the Blade. So next month, make sure you send her something so she will not feel left out again. There have to be some photos that have not been published or stories of paddling adventures that need telling. Send them in. It was a great day and we thank John and Karen for all the work they put into it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can you identify this? (Art shot by John Rack) 10
