CHANGE IN DATE Clubhouse Work Party Now 5/19-21 (Or: The bricks come tumbling down) We really need your help!!! The date of the Spring Work Party has been changed due to my eye doctor s orders and my wife s enforcement of the orders. I ve been banned from lifting anything more than 10 pounds and I am hoping that the ban will be lifted by May 19. We have a dedicated team who have volunteered to demolish two unused chimneys but, we will need a number (more than 6) of really hearty members just to carry the bricks from the chimneys to a slide in a second floor window that will be used to get them into a dumpster in the front yard. We re demolishing the chimneys to make room for upgrades to the men s bathroom and the kitchen later this year (or next). Please make time to come up and lend a hand or two to the project as many hands (and feet) will get the job done without overtaxing our cadre of workers. There will be plenty of good food provided as well as a supply of refreshing adult beverages when the 5:00 bell rings on Saturday night. In addition to the chimney demolition, we will put a second coat of paint on the kitchen and new paint in some of the bedrooms. There are plans to have the dining room floor refinished this fall (it has to be done when the humidity is low) so, there will be some flooring repairs this weekend also. There are a number of outdoor wood working projects: the roof flashing that got rained out last fall; trim repair (after 60 years some is rotting away); repairing the deck and picnic table. Also outdoors, we have yard work, the ongoing recovery of our back 40 and clearing around the disc golf basket. All this is in addition to the multiple tasks to prepare the house for summer activates. We always have more jobs than we can complete. Stay over on Monday and do some biking, hiking or paddling with others who can get the time off. Call Gina or Bill on ( wkornrum@nycap.rr.com ) to let them know you are coming and find out what kind of tools you should bring.

Wednesdays May 3 thru Sept 20 NNYP Wednesday Night Time Trials Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM Mohawk River at Rexford, NY (Aqueduct Boat Dock) Distance: 3.65 miles or less. Registration time: Any time after 6 before the start.start 6:30PM Entry fee: none Contact: Alec Davis voice or text or alecdavis@earthlink.net Thursday Night 2017 Bike Rides Our season will begin on May 4 and I have been out beating the bushes to at least get May filled up. A few of the dates have been taken but if there is a date that you would like to host a ride, be sure to give me a call ASAP. That way you can get a better chance at picking a date YOU want. You already know that biking is an excellent form of aerobic exercise and it is a great way to keep in shape for next year s snow season. It is also nice to take an evening ride and then have some pizza and beer or other delicacy your host might come up with afterward. I want to thank all the hosts who have or will volunteer to lead a ride. Please call me (Terry) at to volunteer. Your fellow club members will also really appreciate it. TerryTamer Ride Information The mechanics of participating are simple. Call the host to let them know you are coming, by the day before, if you can, so they can plan refreshments. Allow enough time to arrive by 6:00 or 6:15 PM. Rides begin at 6:30 SHARP. If you need help with your bike (air in tires, adjustments) get there even earlier and someone will be happy to help you. A helmet is required for all riders. The rides are usually divided into longer for the experienced and shorter (less hilly) for the more novice riders. The host provides route maps, and refreshments after the ride, (like soda, beer, snacks, and pizza.) It is customary that each participant contribute $8.00 toward the host s expenses. Use the On Line Payment System Our on line payment system has worked well. It reduces the work load for our volunteers when you pay on-line. It s best to make your payment before you go up. That way, you don't need to log in at the clubhouse and spend valuable recreation time making payments to the host or mailing it in when there is no host. Make sure to send a copy of your Credit Card payment receipt with your billing form when you use the Clubhouse over the summer. And, thanks to all those who have been using the system and getting their paperwork back to Margaret in a timely manner. MVHC Need someone to take over the Thanksgiving Breakfast. Call John Rack for details A Word from your Clubhouse Director by Bill Kornrumpf Thank you to all of you who faithfully performed the Snow Dance every night before going to bed. It worked with big snows falling before most of the Ski Club Appreciation days and even into April. On April 14, there were still 3 feet of base and 7 feet of snow at the snow stake at Mount Mansfield. To make an understatement, it has been a very good year for skiing in New England (and NY) and for the Clubhouse. I want to thank all who have driven the extra hour to reach Waterbury Center and stay at the Clubhouse. All of the volunteer weekend Clubhouse hosts stepped up and provided a welcoming experience for our newcomers as well as those of us who know the ropes. Without all of the volunteer efforts during the year, we would not be able to enjoy the weekends with our new friends at the Clubhouse. In fact, your increased usage has made it possible for us to purchase new mattresses this spring. Now I need to get them from our garage to the Clubhouse. While spring brings Mud season, there are still plenty of things to do in northern Vermont. It will be some time before all of the snow melts and the hiking trails dry out. But there is a great paved multi-use path along the Little River in Stowe, some very good paddling and biking opportunities very close to the Clubhouse. Remember, we have canoes on the rack and they can be used any time you are up there. Stowe is a destination resort in the Summer with the Stowe Performing Arts Center, special weekend events and now a zip line and mountain ropes adventure park. Plan on a trip to the Clubhouse for a weekend or full week s getaway. You can t beat the location and price. If you enjoyed a stay at the Clubhouse this winter, please plan on attending the May work weekend and making light work of our demolition project. We need your help to make it an even better experience for years to come. Many hands will make quick work of the project.

Lift Ticket Summary We sold more than 167 lift tickets this year. Our members saved $7,000 over the window price and $2,000 over the lowest internet price. A huge thank you goes to Anita Cartin for filling all of the orders as they came in. Summer Usage Good news! The rates at the Clubhouse are staying the same this summer. The best way to keep the rates down is to use the place and bring your friends with you. It is the best deal available in Northern Vermont. Dinner is only served on special periods in the summer when we have a host to coordinate the meals. Any other time, you are free to use the kitchen and prepare your own meals or go to one of the excellent restaurants in the area. We generally have a stock of breakfast meats, eggs and coffee that you can use to make breakfasts. But, we don t guarantee that the fridge will be stocked at all times. If we are running low on anything, give Bill Kornrumpf a call so he can get the stocks replenished. You will need to know the door combination (on your membership card) to get in the door. Remember to sign-in on the register when you arrive so we know you were there and can keep track of the usage. And, make sure to mail in our billing and registration form with your payment (check or copy of credit card receipt) to Margaret within 7 days of usage. After that, you will be assessed a $10 late fee Rates Ski Season Non-Ski Season Year Round With Host Lodging Lodging Dinner Members $28.00 $25 $10.00 Non-member $33.00 $33 $15.00 Juniors (7 to 17 & 18 if in school) $10.00 $10 $5.00 Child (less than 7) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00 For Sale Mixed cruiser from the 1980s. It's in great shape as it s been stored inside. Best as a training boat. Bill Hagan Cell ft. canoe - Old Town Classic Wood and Canvas with detachable sailing rig components built in Color - Green, Very good condition with only a few paint chips, rarely used in the last 20 yrs. Asking $ please call for further details or to set a date/time to view canoe. Canoe is located in Malta, New York. Clubhouse Reservations Everyone staying at the Clubhouse YEAR ROUND should use the on line reservation system. We have had conflicts arise when members have just gone up without reservations and set up in a room that is already reserved. Just as important as your reservation is your presence up there. We have had a number of Noshows without cancellations. It's really a bummer when a member wants to reserve a bed, can't do so and then the bed is not used because someone hasn't canceled their reservation. You need to cancel at least two days before your planned usage so the Volunteer Hosts can plan on the meals and sleeping arrangements for families and friends. Please make your reservations and cancel as soon as your plans change. We packed 46 people in during the March days and only had 4 unused beds. Thanks to all of the hosts who helped make those periods so enjoyable for all.

Wednesday 4/5 Vischer Ferry, five went to check new bridge and trail. The Mohawk had flooded back into the preserve, most trails were not passable. Did a lot of walking back. Left to right: Jan Ohara, Richard Hughes, John Rack, Sandy Brien, Joe Nicolella President s message Fly fishing: I grew up listening to opera, not through my choice but through the choices of my parents and my mother would pick me up after school and drive me down to the repertory theater where I would volunteer to do stuff for the Opera Company, my parents telling me that opera is the greatest of all art forms for it encompasses music and drama and poetry and design and a whole bunch of other stuff, their descriptions going on forever in paragraphs I can no longer remember, they truly believing that understanding opera is essential for living a full and complete life and so while my girlfriends gallivanted braless around the city s parks I spent my youth in the windowless catacombs of the Repertory being educated. I used to be able to hum the melodic arias of some of the Verdi operas and there was nothing worse in my mind than when the likes of Tales of Hoffman or Wagner s Ring Trilogy came to town, excepting for maybe the Ride of the Valkyries which I would put on my family s stereo and crank up as loud as I would play the Doors and finally I graduated from high school and left all the operatic scores behind me with all of its forms and tossing away my bra I went out into the world and didn t think much about opera and all of its forms until just a few weeks ago when in a meeting at work someone asked me what are you going to do when you retire? I answered learn how to fly fish. Why fly fish? One of them asked and the other anglers and I immediately jumped in and we told them about our experiences fly fishing all at once, a kind of counterpoint of interruptions and voice overs and excitement as we described casting the line so it rolls out just above the water and the fly landing quietly on the surface, without a ripple, as great an art form as architecture or sculpture, except that its execution exists only for the moment. I asked the guy at Orvis if there was something I could buy to store my rod and reel so I wouldn t have to put it together every time I went out and take it apart every time I left, like you know, something I could strap onto the top of my car, all nine feet of it with the reel and line and fly intact and he said, no, that I wouldn t want to do that, that I would want to sit on the bank of the river or the stream or the lake and take in the water, look for the eddies, and the pools, and the patterns and get a feel for what is around me, to listen, to listen to the cacophony of sounds melding into a kind of harmony as I put together my rod and reel and line and tie on a fly. Fly tying is an art, for sure, for the fly is designed to generate intense emotion in the viewer, for both the fishermen and the fish: to the fishermen who will look at the creation and respond to its beauty, to its deftly crafted design, and to the fish who will view the object with such great pleasure that it strikes! Fly tiers and fishermen are entomologists as well for we need to know which flies are hatching and what they look like and how they behave for the fish will only strike at these types of flies. And of course, fly fishing is a sport because we want to win! We want to hook that fish and bring it in and measure it up and tell everyone our tale of catching it. It dawned on me, right then and there at this meeting, that my parents (god bless their souls) were wrong. Opera is not the greatest of forms (and this pleases me immensely). Fly fishing is the greatest of all the forms for it is the perfect intersection of art, science and sport. Rock & River X-C Ski Event 25 Years and Counting This year marked the 25 th consecutive year that Schenectady Winter Sports Club members joined together in Keene, New York for a weekend of winter playtime. Some x-c skied, others snow shoed, many visit Saranac for a peak at the Ice Castle, and there is even time to read or meditate in front of the fire. The story began in 1991 when Dot Neff Gray and a few SWC folks skied off the Jack Rabbit Trail to what was a new business venture for Rock & River Owner, Ed Palen. She booked the place. And the event began in Since that time many members have come and gone. Time has a way of changing life. But this event has continued to bring winter enthusiasts together for good times. In 2017 the event had a full house including SWC Members: Larry Lepak, Jennifer Woltjen, Anna Dugan Palmer, Lee Palmer, Fran Herve, Jill & Mike Phillips, Karen & Leon Barnish, Jim & Jan Bornheim, Carol Meisel, Bob Doherty, June Richardson, Marian Hoyle, Anthony Elderling, Cathy Gilchrist, Claudia Rosenholt, Margie Litwin, Shelly Nevard and Heidi Walsh, Jo-Ellen Unger and Lynn Mayack. February 2-4, 2018 is the date for the next event. And yes there is a waiting list, but things do change and there is a chance you could secure yourself a spot. There are new coordinators for the event, so reach out to them if you are interested. Margie Litwin (mhlitwin@nycap.rr.com) and Fran Herve (fherve@nycap.rr.com).

The Door Combination has Changed We changed the Clubhouse door combination during the Fall Work Weekend. The new combination is on your GREEN club membership card. You need to PAY YOUR DUES to obtain your new card with the combination. Pay your dues on line so you don t have to rush at the last minute. If you wait till the ski season, you may find John, our membership volunteer, or me gone skiing and you will not be able to make a reservation or get the combination.
