Now is the time to reserve your favorite room at the Clubhouse for these popular events. The dates are: Dec 4-6, Jan 6-8, Feb 4-6, Mar 18-20, & April We are looking for hosts so please contact Terry Tamer on to help out and get free lodging those nights you host. The sliding price of prior years was discontinued and they have a fixed daily price of: Adults = $45/day & Juniors = $33/day with no extra discount for seniors. You will need your own Stowe Evolution Card and your SWC membership card to obtain the ticket at these prices. President s Message Remembering Mel Kincel For some reason I must have thought he would live forever for dying was never a part of our agenda and there would always be a tomorrow and a river and a paddle and he would slide his boat off his truck over his head and onto his shoulders and walk it down to the river, and rolling it off his shoulders he would place the boat down gently on the grass or on the sand near the water. I would get the paddles and the life jackets and the water bottles and follow him to the shore. Pretty nice you don t have to carry your own boat! Other women would yell (perhaps with a tone of jealousy) as I strolled down to meet him. Very nice, I would yell back, and together he and I would carry the boat, he taking the stern and I taking the bow, into the water. Mel would steady the boat by straddling his legs over the stern gunwales while I found my way onto the seat in the bow. Draw us out, he d say. Hut. And we d paddle up to Mabee farm and check out the bateaus and maybe continue onto the buoy at the dam. The only time he sounded a tad bit frustrated with teaching me how to paddle was when I hit the rock, and put a hole in the bow of his canoe. The rock was very large and we hit it head on. Why did we just hit that rock?! He yelled from the back of the canoe. The water was running making it a bit hard to hear. I don t know, I answered. Did you see the rock? Yes, I answered. We were paddling the Susquehanna, in the Clinton Regatta, the short race, the what was supposed to have been a 12 miler but became a 15 miler due to something I can t remember now and every once in a while, long after we finished the race, during a quiet moment while hiking a trail or walking through a museum, or a not so quiet moment as I put music on sounding nowhere close to the sound of Mark Knopfler and while making Mel dance with me around the kitchen, he would ask, what do you do when you see a rock? I loved our paddles, the Green River Reservoir, the Waterbury Reservoir, Raquette River to Raquette Falls and Blue Mountain Lake to Eagle Lake, Thompson s Lake, and the Mohawk between locks 7 and 8 and 9 and 10 or was it 8 and 9, I could never remember the numbers, the Monday Night paddles, the Wednesday night time trials, the Regattas, the Towpath, the Electric City, the Barge Chaser, the Clinton, and of course our paddles along the Schoharie. A friend of mine called offering his condolences over the loss of my friend, and he said, well, you know, Mel was on a path, and he carried you along for a while. I just thought we would have had more time, more time for another river, another paddle, another hut.

We are asking everybody to register before they arrive to simplify the hosts work load. Thanks go out to all who have already made their reservations and paid using the online credit card payment system. For those without internet service, you can call Clubhouse director Bill Kornrumpf ( ) he will enter your reservation for you. Finally, the Clubhouse is for all 900 members of the Club. It will only function well if everybody signs up every time they plan on going. We have had conflicts arise when members have just gone up without reservations and set up in a room that is already reserved. Clubhouse Rates the Same as Last Year The Clubhouse rates are the same this year as last season. Given our summer usage and careful budgeting, we did not raise the base lodging rates this ski season. In fact, we have eliminated the PayPal fees for online payments this year. We want to encourage you to make online payments before your stay. The rates are: Rates: Ski Season Off Season No Host Year Round With Host Lodging Lodging Dinner Members $28.00 $23.00 $10.00 Non-member $33.00 $33.00 $15.00 Juniors (7 to 17 & 18 if in school) $15.00 $10.00 $5.00 Child (less than 7) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00 Notice that SWC does not increase the rates for holiday and special weekends at the Clubhouse. Members cost of a weekend at the Clubhouse is $66 for two nights lodging, two breakfasts and a great Saturday night dinner and $81 for non-members. That's a bargain when compared with the cost of lodging and meals in a resort village like Stowe. Coupled with our no blackout Stowe tickets, it is a bargain. On line Payment System Our on line payment system is working well. It is best if you plan on using the Clubhouse to make your payment before you go up. That way, you don't need to log in at the Clubhouse and spend valuable recreation time making payments to the host or mailing it in when there is no host.

4 Park City, Utah Ski Trip The New York Capital District Ski Council has booked a trip to Park City, Utah Feb. 7-15, $1549 (senior discount available for skiers 65+) includes 5 day lift tickets for Park City/Canyons, round trip air from Albany, round trip ground transfers, 7 nights hotel lodging, full daily breakfast. The trip is listed on the web nycdsc.org. A Word from your Clubhouse Director by Bill Kornrumpf The ski season is here and as I write this, the ski areas are hard at work making snow and praying that the temperatures cool back down so they can lay it on before the holiday season. Stowe had a total of 6 of natural snow at the official snow stake on Mt. Mansfield on Nov 16 and was making snow on the top of the mountain during the days and when the temperatures on the bottom dropped low enough, they made it on the lower runs. So far, we still have plenty of room at the Clubhouse during the Christmas New Year s period. Both Christmas and New Year s Day fall on a Friday. It makes for an extra two ski days after Jan 1 this year. Most of the holiday vacationers leave on the 1 st so I am expecting smaller crowds on the 2 nd and 3 rd so come up for some great skiing in the New Year. There will be Fireworks on Mt Mansfield New Year s Eve and Sugarbush. The Clubhouse provides the most reasonable housing and meals to be found in Vermont over the holiday period so make your reservations now. For the last few years, we have had great snow in December. Some may say it is Climate Change but I think that it is the development of new snow cannons with their ability to lay down massive amounts of snow in very little time. All of our ski resorts have invested in the new technology and it has been paying off with more early season coverage. As I write this, we have 8 signed up for the Dec. 4 6 Cheap ($45/day) Ski Days at Stowe. The following weekend, Dec 11-13, will feature both the Bombers Ski Clinic and Demo Days with free demo skis at Stowe. {Editors Disclosure: I purchased a new pair of Volkl Skis last year after demo-ing 5 different pairs so I tend to favor the Demo Days.} In closing, I wanted to say that we had a great summer at the Clubhouse and we can be looking forward to a season of great snow this coming year. To paraphrase a Chicago saying about voting, make your reservations early and often. A season of great snow is ahead! January Stowe Ski Club Days This year Chef Earl will be at the Clubhouse during the January Stowe Ski Club Days (1/ 6-1/ 8) and through the weekend. What better than to ski at reduced rates and then come back to the Clubhouse for a gourmet dinner? Sign up early and be sure to indicate you will be there for dinner. Earl will also be at the Clubhouse for a few days before the Ski Club Days. If there is a crowd, you might talk him into cooking; even if it is not a weekend. CSC on the snow carnival Mark your calendar! This year we re looking for a big turnout for the CSC on the snow carnival at Sugarbush Mountain, March 4-6. There are council days on those dates, so cheap skiing, loads of activities, events and races. That weekend will be busy, so if you re staying at the lodge, book early! Bandanas are in! This year we ll be offering 2 types of bandanas for purchase. These are stretchy microfiber bandanas that you can pull over your head to make either a scarf, cover your face, or your whole head. They re thin and still warm. We ll have some at the meetings, the lodge and other activities. Or kirkpatrick80@gmail.com They are $12 apiece Warren Miller Movie - A Huge Success! Well, the 2015 showing of the Warren Miller movie is behind us now and the ski season has officially started. For those who went, they found two days of a packed house with almost no room left for seating. Fantastic! Is the only way to describe it. Of course, this is great for SWC also as this is our biggest fund raiser, having sold 346 of our 350 tickets. This puts over $1000 into our bank account for the season. Special thanks goes out to Jon Skalwold who works with WME to setup the ticket sale, coordinates the SWC ticket sellers and sells tickets. A big hand goes out to our tickets sellers Fernando Ferreira and John Gillivan, and our best ticket seller Mike Baker who personally sold 160 tickets. Thank you all for your efforts. Now, it is time to dust off the skis, sharpen them up and hit the slopes. Ya know, there is cheap ski weekend at Stowe the first weekend in December and it will be hosted. I hope to see you there. Enjoy.

5 Ski Ticket Sales We now have Stowe and Sugarbush tickets for sale online. You can make your purchases online using the credit card payment portal of our website. The tickets are good for any day with no blackout restrictions. In addition, you don't need to make preseason purchases for Stowe and Sugarbush. With SWC, you have flexibility in your chasing snow storms. The Sugarbush tickets are non-refundable to the Club so we will be limiting our sales of Sugarbush tickets. Jay Peak is a different matter. Due to their group sales policies, we need to pre-sell at least 25 tickets before we make the purchase. If you would like to purchase Jay tickets at $65 you must pre-purchase them before Dec 15 on line. If we do not receive the required 25 ticket orders, we will refund the purchase price to your credit card account. You will not be charged the transaction fees in the case that we have to refund your purchase. The refund will go back onto your credit card. All Sugarbush tickets will not be refundable and the Stowe tickets will incur a $5 return fee. We are requiring everybody to use the website and credit cards to order their discount tickets this year to speed the process and simplify the work of our volunteers. This worked well last year and reduced the ticket turnaround time considerably. The process for obtaining our deep discounted, no blackout, lift tickets is to: 1. Log into the SWC website 2. Click on the Cheap SWC Ski Tickets button 3. Click on How to purchase SWC Cheap Ski Tickets 4. Enter the password from the Membership card 5. Follow the directions to finish payment via credit card The price for the no blackout, discounted tickets are: Stowe: Adult $75, Sr (65+) $65, Jr (6-12) $65 Sugarbush: $65 Jay will be $65 if we get at least 25 preseason sales by Dec 15 Call Anita on for more information on the discount lift ticket program. Remember, Lift Tickets make excellent Holiday gifts for family and ski friends. Sign Up Now for Weekend Lodge Chair Although we haven t yet been actively recruiting Weekend Lodge Chairpersons (WLC), several folks have already come forward to volunteer to take over the task of WLC for this coming ski season. Thank you to all who have already volunteered. Many, if not all, have signed up for projected Stowe Club Days. The following is a list of the schedule so far: December 3-6, 2015 Club Days Jon Skalwold December 31, January 1, 2016 Rick Cobello and Cathy McCabe January 5-10, 2016 Club Days Chef Earl Lahna January January 21-24, 2016 Marilyn/Joe Pusatere January 29-31, 2016 February 4, 2016 Club Day John Bidell February 5-7, 2016 Club Days Sandy Culver February Presidents Week February Presidents Week February 26-28, 2016 March 4-6, 2016 March 11-13, 2016 March 17-20, 2016 Club Days Kim Copenhaver March 25-27, 2016, Easter Weekend April 1-3, 2016 April 8-10, 2016 One thing I need to bring to your attention. If you are at all able to get up to the Lodge during Chef Earl Lahna s Club Days, do it! Earl has been up there in the summer and has cooked for us then. He is a gourmet chef! Can you think of anything better than spending a day out in the snow and cold and then coming in for a delicious dinner prepared by this chef! And all for the prices we charge for dinner! Are YOU planning to spend some time up there in Vermont this ski season? Now would be good time to pick a date and give me a call. Remember, if you are Lodge Chair, you don t have to pay for that time, although you will be working. You can also get credit for future stays depending on how many people are there when you are Chair. Give me a call at (518) to volunteer. If I don t answer immediately, please leave a message.
