2 This Handbook provides you with important dates and information. If you are a new family to Firbank Snowsports and excited to join our Firbank Team please your campus Teacher the following details: Junior school: Parent s name and mobile. Senior School: Parent s name and mobile. Senior School: Student s name and mobile. (2016 families are still on our team app database. Please let us know though if you have changed your details) We will add you to our Snowsports Team App for further communication. (Trials and Interschools registration forms etc)

3 Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships Firbank encourages students already involved in Snowsports to develop their skills and represent the school at the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships. This is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to experience Snowsports competition. Students from Prep to Year 12 are eligible to participate. Any student who can ski or snowboard competently, turn in control on a blue run and can ride a T-bar or chairlift is able to attend the trials. To ensure fairness, all participants must ski in the trials; however, an inability to attend trials will not necessarily preclude inclusion in the team. Teams for the Interschool Snowsports Championships will be determined by the results of these trials and for non-participants, by any evidence of past performances in competitions. Trials for the 2017 Firbank Snowsports Team will take place at Mt Buller on Monday 17 July from 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. (4 runs per student). The 2017 Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships will be held at Mt Buller from Monday 21 Sunday 27 August. The 2017 Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships will be held at Mt Buller from Wednesday 6 Sunday 10 September. Detailed information about the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships is available at: This website should be visited regularly in the lead up to the Interschools for all up to date information. You are also encouraged to sign up to their E-news to stay abreast of the latest info. Costs Involved Trials day: Interschool competition: $68.00 per student (4 trial runs) plus student lift ticket $69.00 (Reload) +$5.00 Btag $51.00 entry per event plus $40.00 competitor lift ticket per day Parent s Involvement Parents are required to be available to volunteer for either a Manager or Official role, which requires being on course. Junior school students are required to be under the supervision of their parents at ALL times throughout the trials and competition. Accommodation and Transportation Firbank does not arrange accommodation or transportation for the trials day or the Interschool Snowsports competition. It is advisable that bookings be made as soon as possible, as finding accommodation can be difficult during this busy week. Please contact Gill Crawford if you require transport help for Senior School students. 5 Firbank Snowsports Trials Day Information Sunday 16 July 2017 Team Dinner Snowsports Team dinner at the Whitt. Lift ticket collection will take place at the Team dinner. If you are unable to join us please arrange for another family to collect your lift ticket. Monday 17 July :30 p.m. Meet at the top of the Little Buller Spur Course for Bib Distribution. Look for the Firbank flag. 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Race trials (4 runs) on a standard course (Little Buller Spur) Junior School Students All Junior School students must be accompanied by a parent and are to be under the supervision and care of their parents for the duration of the day. Trials All students will complete 4 trials. The top 2 runs will be tallied to give an average time. All students who attend trials will be given a place in the Firbank Snowsports team. Results and team lists will be available during the first week of Term 3. Helmets Helmets are compulsory for both the trials day and the Interschool Snowsports Championships. Any student without a helmet will not be permitted to trial or compete for the team. Students must not share helmets. Please note: Students are not allowed to wear cameras on their helmets during the Interschool Snowsports Championships.

6 Firbank Snowsports Team: Roles and Responsibilities Parents and students are reminded they are representatives of Firbank during the Interschools as either a competitor or spectator. Please ensure you behave accordingly at all times. Competitors and parents are encouraged to read the rules, which are available at the Interschools website: Firbank Snowsports Uniform Firbank Snowsports Team Jacket (compulsory) Available to purchase from the bookroom, cost $290 Competitors are expected to: Wear correct Firbank Snowsports uniform during competition and at evening presentations Be responsible for organising themselves and their equipment Listen carefully and follow instructions given by officials Support all their team members Display good sportsmanship at all times and represent the School with pride Attend evening presentations as a collective Firbank Snowsports team Parents are responsible for: Ensuring their child wears correct Firbank Snowsports uniform for competition, when attending evening presentations and if appearing on the podium. The wellbeing of their children throughout the duration of the competition (including appropriate clothing and equipment) Getting their child to and from events Providing support and encouragement during races, in a sportsmanlike manner

7 Vic Interschools Snowsports Team: Roles and Responsibilities Please note that all parents will be expected to be available for a role of either Team Manager or Volunteer for at least one of their child s races. The Interschools is run based on parent participation. Volunteers: Are required to report at the top of the course 30 minutes prior to course inspection If a school representative fails to attend the team may incur penalties. All schools are required to provide volunteers for a number of events: these details are released the week before the Interschool Snowsports Championships Team Managers: Please ensure you understand the rules for your designated event. These can be viewed at the Interschools website: Should ring their team members parents the day prior to the event to ensure they are aware of their child s meeting time, location of the race and the equipment required for the event. (Helmets are compulsory. Helmet cameras are not permitted.) Should ensure they have all team members contact details with them during their event. Should meet their team members at the start of each race 20 minutes before course inspection time. Should ensure correct bib numbers on competitors. (checked against start list) Should conduct course inspection with their team members. Helmets and bibs must be worn and competitors are only permitted to side slip down the course. Are responsible for asking for re-runs where required and appropriate. The manager must wait until the end of the race to ensure that the re-run is regarded as valid and that the competitor is not inadvertently disqualified. Must stay until the end of the event to check that there are no unfair disqualifications of their team members. Any objections need to be lodged within 15 minutes of the end of the race. Are responsible for managing the replacement of a competitor who withdraws for medical reasons. A medical certificate must be submitted to the Interschools office, along with written notification of who is replacing the withdrawn competitor and their reasons for withdrawal. The manager must ensure he / she or another responsible adult completes this prior to the event or risk disqualification of the team. Managers, parents or spectators may NOT coach competitors once on course or physically assist them if they fall.
