On behalf of the Township of Selwyn and the PolarFest Committee, I welcome you to PolarFest The committee, comprised largely of volunteers, has been hard at work once again to prepare a wonderful winter carnival filled with events sure to appeal to the entire family! The Township has many local attractions and events that enhance the quality of life for residents and tourists alike. While visiting our area, I encourage you to explore our many unique shops, galleries and restaurants. The warmth and hospitality that our community has to offer will be something you ll long remember. Community spirit and enthusiasm is evident in the number of winter themed activities to be found throughout the Township. Hot Chocolate courtesy of Sullivan s General Store and donuts provided by the PolarFest Committee. Room available for warming until 9:00 pm. New this year will be fireworks following the speeches at approximately 7:30pm! Candle Light Skate 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm Come and enjoy a skate around the 400 metre speed skating oval which will be lined with hundreds of candles. Skating is free, bring your own skates our try a pair of speed skates. We recommend you bring a flash light or a head light for safety. www. ontariospeedskatingoval.com Night Hike 7:00 pm Join the Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee for the nature in Winter Guided Night Hike on the Lakefield Trail. Hikers will set out from the Marshland Centre at the Lakefield Beach. The hike returns to the beach where you will be welcomed by a toasty campfire to roast marshmallows and warm your insides with a cup of hot apple cider. Be sure to dress warmly and bring a flashlight. Cenotaph Park will sparkle with exquisite ice sculptures created by talented chefs. Cast your ballot for the People s Choice Award and hang on to your ballot stub, it s a valuable discount coupon. Bring the children out and enjoy crafting statues out of ice provided for you in the ice garden. The People s Choice Award presented at the Thirsty Loon on Queen Street in Lakefield at 5:00 pm. Fundraising Lunch 11:00 am - 3:00 pm The Ennismore Heritage Artspace Centre will be serving lunch from 11 am to 3 pm to raise money for the community centre. Menu items include Hot Dogs, Pemeal Bacon on a Bun as well as soft drinks, juice and water. The accessible Heritage Centre basement will be open for warming purposes from 10 am to 4 pm. Come join us for crafts, baby area, stories, songs, snack and a puppet play titled Mortimer at the Lakefield Library located at 8 Queen Street, Lakefield. 9 PolarFest Ice & Snow Carving Ice & Snow Carving Bridgenorth Ennismore January 31 February 1 10:00 am - 4:00 pm The Ice People are a non-profit volunteer group carving ice sculptures and hosting various winter events at PolarFest. These events include ice & snow scupltures around the Township, Chemong Lake Paint Can Curling, Little Chippers Ice Program - the carvers of the future. You can watch the carvers in action at Heritage Park in Bridgenorth and The Four corners in Ennismore between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Displays will also be fashioned at Chemong Lodge. The Ice People also store ice blocks to carve at many summer festivals, parades and events. A year-round process that includes Freezin for a Reason. Novice ice carvers are always welcome. 10 8 PolarFest 2015 Candlelight Skate 7th Annual Candlelight Skate Ontario Speed Skating Oval Lakefield South Next to the new water tower Friday, January 30 6:00-9:00 pm The annual candlelight skate will take place on Friday, Jan 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The light from hundreds of candles will guide your way around the 400 metre Oval at the Ontario Speed Skating Oval. Cenotaph Park will sparkle with exquisite ice sculptures created by talented sculptors on January 31st. This year s theme is Frozen, a concept allowing the sculptors to present their best original sculptures with the movie theme. 15 PolarFest Canoe Races 6 th Annual Polar Paddle Queen Street Lakefield Saturday, January 31 1:00 pm Teams of six people will manpower a canoe, on wheels of course, down Queen Street between Reid and Bridge Streets in Lakefield. Racing begins at 1:00 pm and heats will continue until one team emerges as the fastest. Awards will be presented for best costumes and fastest canoe. 19 18 PolarFest 2015 Sleigh Rides Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides Saturday, January 31 1 pm - 4 pm Ennismore Community Centre Sleigh Rides in Canada originated as a form of transportation in farming communities throughout the country. Dog Sledding in Canada had been around for centuries before Europeans arrived and set up communities. Horse-drawn plows tilled the soil during the growing season. During the winter; however, transportation became difficult and sleighs were fabricated. Experience a little of Canada s history and enjoy a Sleigh Ride at the Ennismore Community Centre. The rides will take place on Saturday, January 31 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Marc Campbell of Ennismore will have his team of horses on site and invites everyone to take a jont around the community centre property. Hikers will set out from the Marshland Centre at the Lakefield Beach, located at 64 Hague Blvd. The Committee is pleased to have Tony Bigg to guide this popular family event. Tony Bigg is a Lakefield resident and lifelong birder. He is also a member of the Peterborough Field Naturalists which helps promote nature conservation, education, and active outdoor lifestyles in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. Mr. Bigg runs the Christmas Bird Count for Peterborough County, during the hike he will share his knowledge and experience about nature and birds. 23 22 Cross Country Skiing Skate Skiing Snowshoeing Sunday, February 1 Ontario Speed Skating Oval noon - 3:00 pm PolarFest 2015 Nordic Day Adventure Outfitters of Lakefield, Ontario will be providing those interested the opportunity to experience a variety of Nordic Winter Sports. Staff from Adventure Outfitters will be at the Ontario Speed Skating Oval in Lakefield to assist with fitting each participant with a pair of snow shoes or Cross Country Skis and providing a brief how to session. There is a trail that has been groomed for X-Country Skiing, Skate Skiing and Snowshoeing adjacent to the Oval site that participants will be able to follow as part of this unique experience.
