2 Presidential letter for DesigNr May edition Presidential letter for DesigNr May edition I know it is officially spring in Long Beach because of the swarms of mosquitoes in my backyard. I am in full war mode with my mosquito magnet operational, my plants and lawn sprayed with insect killer and whenever we venture out into the patio my tiki torches are burning. All too little avail as the little monsters continue to harass anybody venturing into the patio area. You ll notice in the write-up I provided for the cruise to Long Beach I have reminded you to bring your mosquito repellent. The good news is the weather has given me the opportunity to get out on a couple of Sunday drives which will be reflected in my mileage numbers you will see at the bottom of this letter. Keeping with my commitment to try and make all of the breakfasts I attended the April North End breakfast. It gave me my first opportunity to wear the ice died t-shirt Sandra had made in the German flag colors set off nicely by the 356C Coupe she silk screened on the front. It was a pleasure to meet and talk to so many members and a few nonmembers, with over 20 people in attendance it was a very pleasant gathering. I hope to make it up to the north end again before the summer is out. If you have not yet attended a breakfast in your area you should try and fit one into your schedule as the small meetings are important in keeping the comradeship alive. We have two great events scheduled in May with the Maifest in Leavenworth May 14th and the tech session in Portland on May 7th. Hopefully one or both of these will fit into your schedule. I would like to thank Bob Forman for the excellent article he provided on the 2016 LA Literature and Toy Meet. Sounds like an event we should try and attend at least once, maybe next year! The mileage challenge winner for April are two of our newest members John and Sherl Cuny who drove their 1964 Coupe up from Los Angeles along the coast. I understand they also drove over to the South End breakfast. Their mileage for the month was 1,614. This put Dan Kalinski in second place with 336 miles and our Sunday drives in Long Beach area earned us a third-place with 90 miles. Also reporting mileage for the month were Rick Danielson at 45 miles and Bob Forman at 34 miles. If you re not getting your cars out you should be, nothing beats the feeling you get when someone comes up and says Nice 356! and Great to see these cars on the road. Keep the Faith and get out and drive! Mike L Thornton

6 356 TECH SESSION WHEN: Saturday, May 7, :00-9:30 AM Tour of shop and current projects 9:30-11:00 AM Tech Session WHERE/HOSTED BY: Matrix Integrated, Inc 4000 SW Macadam Ave Portland, OR Jeremy Williams (co-owner) & George Humphreys (Porsche tech) SPECIAL NOTE: This is an active repair and maintenance shop with concrete floors, so attendees are urged to bring a folding lawn chair to use during the tech session. Coffee, juice and snacks will be provided. THE COMPLETE 356 THROTTLE SYSTEM - FRONT TO BACK Throughout the many decades that George Humphreys has been working on 356 Porsches, he has noticed that many of the cars that come in for servicing fall short of getting all the performance they are capable of because the throttle system components are worn or incorrectly adjusted. This tech session will focus on the throttle linkage as an entire system, from the throttle pedal all the way back to the carburetors. The session will primarily cover throttle linkage used with Zenith 32NDIX and Solex 40P11 carburetors, which applies to the vast majority of the 356s still seen today. Despite some throttle system differences in the engine compartment of early cars using single throat Solex carbs, the remaining linkage is very similar to later styles so there will still be good system information for anyone that has an early car. The discussion will not be specifically about the carburetors themselves, but more in regards of how to make the carbs open fully and simultaneously, and to make sure that whatever carburetors you are using are giving you the maximum available performance by utilizing settings and adjustments in the throttle linkage system. George Humphreys is the head air-cooled Porsche technician at Matrix Integrated, with over 38 years of experience. Early in his career, he was fortunate to have been mentored by some exceptionally gifted mechanics including Lukes & Shoreman and now, having become a gifted technician in his own right, is the one sought after to do the mentoring. He is best known for his attention to detail, thoroughness, and a willingness to tackle problems that others have been unable to correct. He communicates extremely well so this tech session will not only be informative, but from the participant s point of view, will be understood. Matrix Integrated is a full-service repair and maintenance facility specializing in well-loved Porsches and other German vehicles. 7 Join the Celebration in Leavenwor th The Annual Maifest and Festzug May The Chamber of Commerce of Leavenworth is inviting the 356 Group NW again to be the featured car for the 2016 Maifest. This year s parade however comes with a twist, PBS will be in town filming the festivities and parade for a documentary. As we are now part of the parade for the third year, we have been asked to put on some traditional German clothing. Would you have thought that it only takes 3 parades and you are a bona fide GERMAN? Well...only in Leavenworth of course. The Chamber will make the outfits available before the parade and we will return them afterwards. I volunteer to teach you all some German words, so everybody will be very impressed with the 356 Group NW. In order to provide the Chamber of Commerce with some gender and size information, we will need your RSVP and relevant information beforehand. So don t be shy and make your club proud, be German, if only for a couple of hours. We will again have a designated parking area inside the closed pedestrian zone for all to enjoy our cars after the parade is over. The Maifest includes live music and dance performances. An arts and crafts fair, lots of food, wine, beer and everything else German. We had an awesome time in previous years, with an endless crowd taking pictures in front of our cars. If you do decide to make a weekend of it, there are plenty of great drives, destinations, and activities in the area! The Chumstick Highway is a beautiful loop off of Hwy 2. Icicle Ridge Winery is a gorgeous log cabin winery destination just a short drive from Leavenworth down lovely North Rd. A number of us may be leaving Friday in order to enjoy the town and have an opportunity to sleep in. Please RSVP to Mike Grabowski (marksmansales@comcast.net) if you want to caravan over on either Friday or Saturday morning. We need to know by April 30th how many will participate, so we can plan for parking and make dash plaques for each car. This is a great opportunity to have fun and promote our club. The Saturday group will meet at the Chevron Station off I-90, exit 31 eastbound for an 8:00 a.m. departure. The arrival time in Leavenworth should be around 10:00 a.m., with plenty of time to spare to change to parade attire and for the parade assembly. More details will follow later, please RSVP first.

8 356 Cruise to Long Beach Peninsula June Named one of America s Favorite Beach Towns by ForbesTraveler.com and voted Best Beach by the viewers of Seattle s KING-5 TV, the Long Beach Peninsula offers visitors an expansive beach, is home to a new national park, two historic lighthouses and several small museums. You can find out more at the Long Beach Web Site of and find and book reservations at We will meet at the Sumner, WA High School at 9:30 leaving at 10:00. We will take back roads to Long Beach with 101 around Willapa Bay being one of the best sports car roads in the state. Once we get to Long Beach we will end up at Mike and Sandy Thornton s house in Long Beach for a hosted social gathering of snacks and soft drinks. (note: in June we can have MOSQUITOS in the back yard area so you will want to bring some repellant with you) If there is enough interest, the southern group would meet in Longview, at The Masthead at 12:00 leaving at 12:30 and go down the river on the Washington side (SR 4) with Rick Carns. Driving time is about 3 to 3.5 hours from Sumner and from Longview on SR4 is about 1.5 hours. We will give you maps of the local area. To get into State Parks you will need a Washington State Parks Discovery Pass. This will include North Head Light House and Cape Disappointment Light House. There is also Port of Ilwaco which hosts a weekly Saturday Market.. In the evening we will gather for a no host group dinner at one of the local restaurants The Lost Roo at 1700 Pacific Ave S, Long Beach, WA at 6:00 PM. Sunday you are on your own to visit more of the area or join us for a drive along the Columgia River to Fort Columbia State Park, Naselle and back to Long Beach before your trip home. The trip home can be on your own or as a group that you can arrange among yourselves. For the restaurant we will need your RSVP by June 18, 2016 and you will also need to have made your hotel reservations early as the summer time at the beach can get quite busy. Send your RSVP to mikelthornton@hotmail. com (note the L between Mike and Thornton without the L it goes to some other Mike Thornton). Looking forward to sharing our Peninsula with you, Mike L and Sandy Thornton, Rick Carns and Linda Wilson

9 Just One Moore Spring arrived and suddenly it was summer. Two or three days in the 80 s! The top came down and the ol cab and I took off for some wonderful outings. But...sunny days were short lived. Spring has returned, maybe with a winter chaser. Ain t the Pacific Northwest great? But speaking of winter... Many, many years ago, when our breakfast group was just starting in McMinnville, we were gathered at Jake s Restaurant enjoying our eats while admiring our cars qued up in the parking lot. A stranger appeared at the door and asked, Who s in charge here? All fingers pointed at me with the reply, He is!. It was my lucky day. In his arms were a bunch of old Christophris magazines, the earliest being Volume 1, He gave them to me saying, I once had an old Porsche like those outside. I use to get these magazines on a regular basis. I m in the process of moving and don t want them. You can have them if you want. At this point I was salivating uncontrollably trying to reply, Do I ever. I thanked him profusely, and relieved him of his burden. He thought he had moore in his basement and if he found them, he d let me know. That was the last time I saw him. On the cover of Volume 1, 1956 (English Edition) is a picture of 356s at a ski resort blanketed in lots of snow. The back cover shows a Porsche going through the snowy Alps. Talk about winter driving. Inside were many interesting articles and pictures of A cars. One article recalled the problems an owner encountered crossing the Iron Curtain and driving into Prague. Also, it was reported that the 10,000th 356 engine was assembled in Hmmmm. Reutter Has Introduced a New Luggage Rack read the heading of another article in this edition. It was reported that the engine lid could be opened when the luggage rack was mounted, no accessories needed to fasten skis and the rack could be used for a second spare tire. Pictures were included to prove all points. If you bought one in silver gray, it was cheaper than if you had it painted the color of your car. Finally, it was reported that the Porsche Club of America was formed in August, It had 78 members in 24 states with its headquarters in Virginia. A competing organization was identified as the Porsche Owners Club, which was located in Los Angeles boasting 100 members. According to the Porsche organization, the big problem facing a Porsche Club in the US was its huge geographic size. The article went on to declare that it was somewhat impractical to operate a Porsche away from the large population centers such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, because of service problems. A solution might be the establishment of three clubs; one in each of the large population centers. It was further reported that it was nearly impossible to form a national club when members would have to travel 3,000 miles of continental America. ( If you own a Porsche that was manufactured between 1950 to 1955, they were talking about your car!) That s all for now. Must clean the bugs off the windshield and prepare for the next sunny day...or moment!
