2 Presidential letter for DesigNr June edition Presidential letter for DesigNr June edition Living in Long Beach puts us (me, my wife and our car) 2.5 to 3 hours from Portland or Seattle and with two other 356 NW Group members in the area I am trying to get together for drives on the weekends that the NW Group does not have something scheduled. Following Perry Richards idea used in Hood River, I decided I was not going to limit it to just 356 s. I started the Coast Classic Sport Car Club (CCSCC) with headquarters in Long Beach, WA. As the only official member I do it all and have an list of fifteen people. Cars besides the 356 s are a 912, Triumph TR 3 & TR6, MG A & B and Volvo P1800. Our first event was 21MAY16 and we had three cars or 20% of the club, not too bad! As it was after the 20th I cannot use the mileage for this month but will add it to the June total. If you are ever going to be in the Long Beach area, and if you let me know, maybe we can schedule an event while you are here. I was able to attend the 356 throttle system tech session on May 7th that was hosted by Matrix Integrated, Inc in Portland, Oregon. It was excellent and I, on behalf of the club, would like to thank Dan George for organizing it, George Humphreys and Jeremy Williams of Matrix for putting it on, and to a new member John F. Clemson for writing it up for the DesigNr, thank you all! It was nice to see some of our Oregon members from Portland and Hood River as well as those from Long View and Seattle areas. This is a good cross section of the club membership. If you have an idea of interest for an event, please contact a board member and we will help you get it on the calendar of events. Our 30th annual bull session is coming up on July 23rd at Griot s Garage in Tacoma,WA. We need volunteers to help support the activities; setting up and clean up, registration, parking, food and beverage service, sales etc. Our club works because of your support. If you can help please let a board member know and we will get you on the list. The board and other club members thank you. Again I would like to thank Bill Moore for his contribution to our May newsletter. The story on the old Christophris magazine Volume 1, 1956 was a nice addition. If you to have a story to share please send them to the DesigNr Editor Jack Keyes at jkeyes356@gmail.com. The mileage challenge winners for May are Bob and Anne King with 1,004 miles for their trip from Medford, OR up to Maifest in Leavenworth, WA, driving Sophie their 65 Cab. Rick & Sally Danielson are in second place with 476 miles and Dan and Barbara George are in third place with 293 miles. Dan Kalinski is in fourth place with 240 miles. Thank you for keeping me posted on your mileage. I am sure there are others who have been driving as I saw cars at the tech session and in the pictures for Maifest. Please take the time to send me your mileage in an at thor346c@gmail.com. Keep the Faith and get out and drive! Mike L Thornton

5 356 Tech Session on throttle linkage system By John F. Clemson On May 7, 2016 about enthusiasts met at Matrix Integrated Motors located in Portland, Oregon to learn about how 356 throttle linkages were designed and how to maintain them. George Humphreys and Jeremy Williams were our hosts for the discussion of this interesting topic that is often overlooked during routine maintenance of the 356. The discussion focused on cars equipped with Zenith 32 NDIX or Solex 40 P11 carburetors. Starting at the foot pedal to the engine bay, a system of bell cranks, linkages, rods, balls and ball sockets make up the system. The system needs to be maintained and adjusted correctly to achieve near to full throttle position allowing for proper performance. George discussed how to determine if the system was working correctly and then how to adjust and maintain it. Checking how much the carburetors are opening is first on the list. This involves using an assistant pressing the gas pedal in the full opening position while you or your mechanic is looking at throttle position. Compare to opening the carburetors by hand in the engine bay. In summary the system is checked for wear and lubed. Then working from the throttle pedal itself backward to the transmission bell crank: The throttle pedal; inspect the ball and socket connections at the pedal. The forward lever located under the driver s floor board; inspect the ball and socket connections at this point for dirt and contamination. Pull rods located inside the car s tunnel are hard to access and are best left as is. The cable boot between the firewall at the engine and the coupler. The throttle coupler (late B s and C s use a throttle coupler n the system) and connecting to the transmission bell crank. After all of these components have been inspected, cleaned, lubricated and replaced as necessary they all have to be reassembled and adjusted. At the end you should have the 20 to 21mm behind the vertical centerline of the pivot point on the bell crank (see the manual for a diagram) and full throttle movement best at 90% to 95%. To demonstrate the system as a whole and as a training aid George had built a model of the system and in an elaborate story he attributed the model and the original design to Rube Goldberg. The model was a great aid as getting the class under and over a car would not have been easy. George has prepared a very detailed paper on how to perform all of this work including final adjusting and it can be obtained by contacting Jeremy Williams, Matrix Integrated Inc., NW Cornell Rd., Portland, OR 97229, Phone, jeremy@matrixintegrated.cc. Starting at the engine bay, inspect, clean, grease or replace as necessary: The lever arms on the carburetors. The linkage rods and ball sockets on the crossbar levers to the carbs. The fan housing bell crank. The pull rod that connects the bell crank to the transmission bell crank.

9 356 Cruise to Long Beach Peninsula June Named one of America s Favorite Beach Towns by ForbesTraveler.com and voted Best Beach by the viewers of Seattle s KING-5 TV, the Long Beach Peninsula offers visitors an expansive beach, is home to a new national park, two historic lighthouses and several small museums. You can find out more at the Long Beach Web Site of and find and book reservations at We will meet at the Sumner, WA High School at 9:30 leaving at 10:00. We will take back roads to Long Beach with 101 around Willapa Bay being one of the best sports car roads in the state. Once we get to Long Beach we will end up at Mike and Sandy Thornton s house in Long Beach for a hosted social gathering of snacks and soft drinks. (note: in June we can have MOSQUITOS in the back yard area so you will want to bring some repellant with you) If there is enough interest, the southern group would meet in Longview, at The Masthead at 12:00 leaving at 12:30 and go down the river on the Washington side (SR 4) with Rick Carns. Driving time is about 3 to 3.5 hours from Sumner and from Longview on SR4 is about 1.5 hours. We will give you maps of the local area. To get into State Parks you will need a Washington State Parks Discovery Pass. This will include North Head Light House and Cape Disappointment Light House. There is also Port of Ilwaco which hosts a weekly Saturday Market.. In the evening we will gather for a no host group dinner at one of the local restaurants The Lost Roo at 1700 Pacific Ave S, Long Beach, WA at 6:00 PM. Sunday you are on your own to visit more of the area or join us for a drive along the Columgia River to Fort Columbia State Park, Naselle and back to Long Beach before your trip home. The trip home can be on your own or as a group that you can arrange among yourselves. For the restaurant we will need your RSVP by June 18, 2016 and you will also need to have made your hotel reservations early as the summer time at the beach can get quite busy. Send your RSVP to mikelthornton@hotmail. com (note the L between Mike and Thornton without the L it goes to some other Mike Thornton). Looking forward to sharing our Peninsula with you, Mike L and Sandy Thornton, Rick Carns and Linda Wilson

10 Just One Moore May was Oregon wine month. At our house, every month is wine month. On second thought, how about every day? We do show some restraint, limiting our intake to one bottle a day (as long as there aren't any exceptions... friends, holidays, celebrations. Hey, in Sicily a family of four consumes three bottles a day, 1 ½ at lunch and the same amount at dinner. That's one case every four days for you math wino folks out there. Maybe they're onto something. To appreciate the science of wine-making, I started tinkering (for the sake of science, of course.) First thing I learned there's minimal science involved. Every wine-maker approaches the science using a different strategy. There's virtually no agreement among these experts - each approaching the task in their own unique way. Science? Not so much. Wanting to continue my quest for scientific knowledge, I decided to become a bee keeper. This seemed like a great idea and ideal way to increase the pollination of our fruit trees and flowers. Plus there's a bonus honey! First thing I did was attend a conference for novice bee keepers. Needed to learn the bee science and listen the the experts. Well, after the third presenter contradicted all the prior presenters, I came to the conclusion there was no science to be learned. ALL the experts marched to their own drummer. But hey, this is supposed to be about 356s, where technology and science reign. With driving weather upon us, it was time to do the spring tub chores of changing the oil and adjusting the valves. Yeh, this is my kind of science; grease under my nails, stained shirts and pants pocked with acid. Certainly motor oil seems to have come into alignment at least if you listen to the ads. Moore zinc, high temp protection and good for your rings, valves and cam. We can all agree on the correct oil, right? So what do you use? On to valve adjustment where science is king (like Bob) - right? Wrong! Before beginning the task I decided to review some recommendations, since I hadn't done any adjusting since last year. I checked the current setting of my valves. They were all at point.04. Hmm. Better check with my drivers and shop manual to see if they agree. They suggested.04 on the exhaust and.06 on the intake. Well, that's different. Needing moore clarification, I checked Harry Pellow's directions. He writes that once a new engine is broken in, set them all to.06. So, where's the science? What do you do? Why?... talk to me now... Well, I don't need science to tell me we've had some great top down driving weather. It's been great! A predicted week of 80 degree days, topping 90 degrees on Friday. But wait...saturday was 60 and raining. Sunday, moore rain and snow in the mountains (How do you spell Leavenworth?) Did the weather guy get it correct? I think whoever is in charge of predicting the weather must also make wine, raise bees and maintain a 356. Well, I'm moving on to a simpler area of guaranteed agreement: tire air pressure and best wax. Of course, if we explore wax, we must consider our paint. Which is best, single stage or two stage? You tell me. You scientists, step up to the plate and help us out. Is it Where's the beef or where's the science? I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid, but he says he can stop any time.
