2 A Word from the Prez We Need YOU! As the Fall season approaches, it is time for your 356GroupNW to put forth a slate of officers for election for My term as President will conclude at year end and Mike Thornton will be up for election in that role. His position of Vice President will be vacant, and we need to fill that slot, as well as confirm by vote, the other 356 GroupNW officer positions. I have enjoyed the role of being your President these past three years. Thank you for giving me that opportunity. It has not been without its challenges, but the fun has easily surpassed the challenges. As you all know, Sally and I enjoy driving our 356, so tours are a favorite part of the belonging to the GNW to share that fun with others. If you would like to be considered as a candidate for the Vice President position, please let one of your board members know. We would be happy to provide a copy of the by-laws for your review. Feel free to call or contact by . We are eager to have you involved with new or different ideas to continue to grow our membership, plan interesting club events, and expand on the fun of being a 356GroupNW member. As you know, the demographics of our club membership encompass the Pacific Northwest states: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and BC Canada. I would like to encourage any of our members from these states to consider an officer position. Technology keeps our board members connected, so it is not necessary for officers to be in the same physical proximity. 4 Heckmann Thiemann Rally Portland, OR. Story by Mike L. Thornton On August 15 Rick Carns and I met in Longview and took his SC Cab to the Heckmann Thiemann Rally in the Portland area. The starting place was the World of Speed in Wilsonville. The theme of World of Speed is race cars and the museum had a large collection of dragster related material, motorcycles, muscle cars, hydroplanes, cars for speed week on the Bonneville Salt Flats and a lot more and is worth a visit if you get the chance. (Note: No Porsches in the collection or on display.) The featured car was a Bentley Speed Six from the 1930 s. On Saturday mornings they host car gathering. The ones I remember were an MG A, the Porsches and a Lotus, but there were also a lot of American cars as well. This added a lot to the gathering, but by the time we were ready to leave on the rally most of the other cars had left. Of the 80 or so cars that attended the rally about a dozen were 356 s from the Portland and Vancouver area. After a drive of 25 or 30 miles in the lovely back roads of Oregon we finished for lunch at the Pats Acres Racing Complex (PARC) in Canby (a Go Karts track). Tables and a buffet were set up in a large field. In visiting with the other participants and in particular the 356 drivers I was promoting the 356 Group Northwest and hope we will get at least one new member. Also, I talked up the hope I have of getting more participation from the Portland area members. The lunch was spectacular with small skewers of beef, chicken and salmon, several types of salads and a rice dish that had dried cranberries and apricots and was very delicious. It was a very pleasant day and experience to share with Rick and the other Porsche enthusiasts. I am glad I went as it had been many years since the last time it attended this great event.

6 Chasing Away the Clouds... Text by Jack Keyes After experiencing much-needed rain mixed with a little thunder and lightning on the days leading up to Kim s Tour on Sunday, August 16th, the day of the Round the Mountain tour to Mt. Rainier proved to be a Northwest dream. Sunny and clear with a few puffy clouds near The Mountain beckoned us upward with a group of ten 356 s and a 912. Guiding the tour from Enumclaw up Hwy. 410, our tour leaders, Rick and Sally Danielson, set a spirited pace past Greenwater and Crystal Mountain through the towering firs and the rather shallow White River to the Sunrise turn-off inside Mt. Rainier National Park. A quick stop just past the Park entry provided a timely break to stretch and relieve oneself prior to the next segment of this very rewarding journey. The continuing drive up to the Sunrise Lodge provided a fantastic opportunity to apply the capabilities of our cars as they were intended. Lots of climbing 15 mph-posted hairpin turns were taken with spirited gusto and ease by this hardy group. However, what we enjoyed in driving was nearly surpassed by the panoramic views of the northeast side of Mt. Rainier and surrounding peaks and meadows. We achieved our goal of chasing away the clouds as the sky was a cloudless blue! Upon arrival at Sunrise Lodge the group trekked to the picnic area for a little sustenance and more enjoyment of the fantastic landscape. Needless to say, Sunrise is a very popular viewpoint and hiking destination during the tourist season particularly on such a gorgeous day. Prior to winding our way back down the mountain we gathered for a group photo with a backdrop of the white obelisk towering above the line-up of lovely vehicles. The return drive down the mountain and back to Enumclaw was nearly as exhilarating as the transit up, particularly suited to top-down cruising. Rather than dispersing upon arrival in Enumclaw our tour leaders led us through Buckley on the backroads to South Prairie and past Lake Kapowsin. And we thought we had experienced enough scenic driving for the day but the tour through the winding country roads was an added treat. The ultimate destination proved to be the home of Rick and Sally, our great tour leaders and gracious hosts. Many of us were able to tour Rick s well-appointed garage housing a variety of lovely 356 s, sharing conversation, and enjoying great hors d oeuvres. Many thanks to them for providing an opportunity to enjoy a lovely summer day while experiencing the joys of our cars.

Bill Coghlan A short 356 Porsche Bio I purchased my 1959 356A about 15 years ago.

During my ownership of this car, we ve also owned a 64 356C, two 912s, a 2005 Boxster S and a 2008 C4S. My wife, Lisa, and I retired in April of 2014 and just moved to Whidbey Island in May of 2015.

I spent summers in my mother s hometown of Raymond as well as time with my father and grandfather in Seattle. Both Lisa and I have friends and family in the Puget Sound area so we re loving life.

13 Bill Coghlan A short 356 Porsche Bio I purchased my A about 15 years ago. It was a basket case and I ve slowly worked on it and brought it to its current level of restoration over that period of time. During my ownership of this car, we ve also owned a C, two 912s, a 2005 Boxster S and a 2008 C4S. My wife, Lisa, and I retired in April of 2014 and just moved to Whidbey Island in May of I was born in Seattle but my mother and step-father relocated to Southern California when I was just starting grammar school. I spent summers in my mother s hometown of Raymond as well as time with my father and grandfather in Seattle. Both Lisa and I have friends and family in the Puget Sound area so we re loving life. My love of Porsches started when I was five and my parents gave me a tinplate model of a 356 (still have it). I had a Speedster in high school that I bought, like most of my cars, for around $ When I graduated from college, I had a 61 coupe that I drove to my new job in Dallas where it was stolen LA to Dallas was the longest drive that I ever made in a 356 and a fair amount of the trip was done on Route 66. I had a few Porsches after the 61 but they were always new until I purchased the 59 that I currently own. My mechanic is a friend, Steve Conger. Steve lives in Camarillo California and swears he ll come up to work on my car. He s done two what I call museum quality car restorations. His latest was a 54 Turkish Red Pre-A with a 1500S factory engine. It was sold about a year ago to Skip Perry and there was an interesting article in the 356 Registry magazine about Steve s restoration and reconnecting with a distinguished former owner. I was in Real Estate for 40 years in Southern California. I purchased, entitled and built residential projects as well as two shopping centers and one golf course. It was a fun career and I don t think any two days were ever what I would call routine. Lisa was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 35 years and is enjoying terra firma. We ve been doing a lot of exploring as a break in our unpacking and remodeling projects. I knew Paul Hatfield before moving to Whidbey and he gave me good advice on searching for a home on Whidbey. John Brooks, who lives in Oak Harbor, encouraged me to attend the Bull Session this year which I did and really enjoyed it. Tom Olson also lives close by and I met him at the Bull Session. I look forward to many 356 adventures in Washington. I believe that there are other 356 owners on Whidbey and hope to meet them in my travels about the Island.
