Your monthly letter from Rob will be back next month, but for now you get to hear from your current chapter VP. I have been given an opportunity to introduce myself to you all that don t know me. I have been a member of the group since 2008 and have owned my Chris Craft Capri since We can all recount our own personal story of how we contracted the acute diagnosis of Woodyboateritis. My case is unique, but probably has some similar threads to how you contracted your own condition. I grew up in Michigan about 50 miles Southwest of Algonac, the birthplace of the Chris Craft Corporation. I lived there until 2003, when my wife and I moved to Seattle, the city where she lived for 15 years prior to us meeting in Michigan. So the interesting thing is, I never grew up around boats, wooden or fiberglass, and had only ridden in a wooden boat one time at the age of 10. I did, however, always have an extreme admiration and appreciation for classic wooden runabouts. After five years of living in Seattle my case of Woodyboateritis became so severe that I bought my current boat and didn t know a thing about it. Even better, I didn t even know that Algonac was the birthplace of Chris Craft. This is even after I spent years driving to Algonac to call on a customer who owned a Lumber company there. When I first met the owner, who was about 70 years old at the time, he began describing the long, rich history his family had in the Algonac community. He went on to say that his father and Christopher Columbus Smith were very good friends. I, being the new 25 year old commercial loan officer, let out a laugh thinking he was making a joke referring to THE Christopher Columbus. Needless to say, he wasn t laughing and I still remember the serious, deadpan look on his face. During my time taking care of this customer, I often wondered, why in the world would they ever have decided to have lumber yard locations in Marine City and Holland? It wasn t until I moved to Seattle that it all made perfect sense. Since I ve been in the club I ve learned so much about the classic boats we all have such an affinity for. But even more, I ve been amazed by the wealth of knowledge in our local chapter. Seriously, I would stack up the level of expertise and knowledge by our collective chapter to any chapter in the country. In addition, the willingness to help impart that knowledge when asked is equally as impressive. For those that I don t know, I look forward to seeing you at one of our chapter events this year. 2 Opening Day 2013 May 3 rd and 4 th We re pleased to continue our involvement with the celebration of Opening Day of Boating Season - a long-standing Northwest tradition hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club. Our Opening Day Host The Seattle Yacht Club The Seattle Yacht Club has extended a special invitation to ACBS members to join in all of their Opening Day festivities. Stop by the club Wednesday through Saturday. For information on all of the SYC/Opening Day activities please visit ACBS PNW Boat Rides - We ll be organizing a flotilla of ACBS boats to visit the Yacht Club on Friday afternoon from 2:00 pm on to give rides. SYC sets up a special dock for us to pick up guests and take them out along the log boom. This gives us a great chance to treat people from all over, to show them the log boom, tell them about ACBS and give back to our hosts. If you are available to give rides, call Steve Snider at Costumes This year s theme is pretty straight forward think; grass skirts, coconut bras, Hawaiian shirts, etc The Opening Day Committee is asking all participating to wear Hawaiian shirts and sun glasses for the opening day parade. Goodwill Thrift Store always has a good selection of Hawaiian shirts on hand if you don t already have one. For decorations we will be making boat sized Hawaiian Leis out of tissue paper and strung together to hang from the front of your boat windshield along the sides and back to the stern. 2

3 Hawaiian Magic ACBS Schedule Friday Day, May 3 rd, 2:00 PM Seattle Yacht Club Boat rides Anyone that wants to give boat rides at the Seattle Yacht Club, meet on the water out front of the Seattle Yacht Club around 2:00. Rides are typically down the Montlake cut to the end of the log boom and back. Friday Evening, May 3 rd, 6:00 PM Kick Off Dinner - Center for Wooden Boats Come with or without a boat to the Center for Wooden Boats (1010 Valley Street). For your convenience we ve organized overnight moorage at the Center. We need volunteers to help decorate, so come early and join in the fun! Dinner includes a number of entrees, salad, dessert, coffee, beer, wine, and soft drinks. Saturday Morning, May 4th, 9:30 AM Parade Assembly Breakfast We ll assemble at the CWB, for a continental breakfast including coffee, juice, fresh fruit and pastries. A short skit rehearsal, distribution of costumes and skipper s meeting will follow. If you are not bringing a boat to Opening Day there will be plenty of room in boats for you to ride along. Don t miss this parade! has ended, the green light will be turned on for boat traffic west thru the cut and we can return to Lake Union. Don t Forget To Register Your Boat before April 19th Since we usually have out of town guests needing boat rides, we need as many club boats as possible to participate in this year s parade. The Seattle Yacht Club requires that we register our flotilla in advance. To make sure we all get our parade numbers in time, registration forms must be in Kirk Knapp s hands by April 19th. But why wait? You know better than to miss this one! Send your registration now. Event Questions? Call: Steve Snider at Saturday Afternoon, after the parade, lunch at the UW Husky Crew House Following the parade we ll arrive at the Conibear Shellhouse, home of the University of Washington Rowing Crew. Bring a picnic lunch; we will picnic on the crew house dock. July 10, Meeting at the Museum of Flight Restoration Center, restoration process of vintage and historic airplanes for the Boeing Museum of Flight August 14, Predetermined location on Lake Washington - informal dinner and an evening group cruise in our boats September 11, Meeting at the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum October 9, Meeting at Center for Wooden Boats. Bell Street Classic Weekend 2013 The Pacific Northwest Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association in conjunction with the Port of Seattle will once again sponsor the Bell Street Pier Classic Rendezvous

Over forty classic wooden vessels, many of them built prior to World War II, will welcome visitors throughout this Father s Day weekend.

Bell Street Classic Weekend 2013 The Pacific Northwest Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association in conjunction with the Port of Seattle will once again sponsor the Bell Street Pier Classic Rendezvous as part of the Seattle Waterfront Classic Weekend, June 15 and 16 at Pier 66 on Seattle s downtown waterfront. Over forty classic wooden vessels, many of them built prior to World War II, will welcome visitors throughout this Father s Day weekend. This event represents the largest gathering of classic yachts on the West Coast. The yachts will be joined by dozens of classic automobiles that will be on display on the pier. Admission to all show sites is complimentary. Edmonds Waterfront Festival Fri, 05/31/2013 to Sun, 06/02/2013 Sponsored by the Edmonds Rotary, this is a fun event for around a dozen classic wooden yachts. The event is sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association and the Port of Edmonds. We did a land display here last year, and perhaps again this year. 4th of July at Center for Wooden Boats Thu, 07/04/2013 to Sun, 07/07/2013 Details coming The 24th Annual Rendezvous is held at the Port Orchard Marina in Port Orchard, Washington; and will be held July 11th-14th. Up to 80 boats typically attend. DON T FORGET THE MONTHLY MEETING!
