Bruddah Iz, as he called himself on stage, was born in Honolulu in 1959, and was surrounded by music from the time he was born. This music was played by many Hawaiian musicians, both traditional and famous, who frequented the establishment where his parents worked. One of his uncles was one of the most important Hawaiian musicians of the time. Israel began playing music at the age of 11 with his older brother and a cousin, and continued to play even after his brother entered the army and his cousin moved to the mainland United tates. Many of his most popular songs lament the second-class status of native Hawaiians in that state, singing about their poor treatment and the loss of their traditions and culture. Israel believed strongly that the rule of the islands by white people, and the tourist industry in particular, had done massive harm to the native Hawaiian people and their culture, and he worked tirelessly to inspire pride in their culture among young Hawaiians

2 Bruddah Iz struggled with health issues his whole life, and faced a number of health problems related to his weight. At one point he weighed as much as 343 kilograms, and was hospitalized a number of times because of his size. He died at the young age of 38 in 1997, and was shown enormous respect by the people of Hawaii at his passing. The Hawaiian flag was flown at half staff on the day of his funeral, and he was laid in state in the state capitol building in Honolulu, an honor that has only been given to two other people in the history of the state. About ten thousand people attended his funeral, and thousands attended the ceremony at which his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean.
