This traffic light was a lantern that used gas to make green and red lights. However, the light exploded and hurt a police officer, so it wasn t used for a long time after that. Many years later, around 1913, the Ford Motor Company began making a large number of cars. This caused many traffic problems for cities in the USA, so a police officer started to stand at each busy *crossroad. All over the world traffic lights use the colors red, yellow and green. Some people, however, have said the colors should change, because the colors red and green are difficult to see for colorblind people. Actually, in some countries, colorblind people are not allowed to drive. To help colorblind people, a Korean company has designed a new traffic light which uses a s ウ for each color: triangle for red, circle for yellow, square for green. It may be used in the future. Tipperary Hill, a town in the USA, has the only upside down traffic light in the world. Many Irish people lived in Tipperary Hill when it started to use its first traffic light, and they were not happy that the green light, the traditional color of Ireland, was at the bottom. After some time the town decided to change the lights, and even now a traffic light in Tipperary Hill has the green light at the top and red at the bottom. 5

7 Of course, traffic lights are very useful, but there are also some エ drawbacks. First, they can be expensive. Modern traffic lights cost about $80,000~$100,000, plus electricity. Another problem is that traffic lights can make traffic slow, so some drivers try to use roads that don t have traffic lights. For example, they may use roads in areas people live. Finally, although putting a new traffic light on a busy crossroad helps to stop serious accidents, smaller accidents increase. For example, cars sometimes crash into the car in front of them. In September of 1998, a French swimmer arrived in France after swimming 6,000 kilometers in 73 days from Massachusetts in the USA, and those were his first words. Ben Lecomte became the first person to swim across the Atlantic Ocean, and his goal was to collect money for cancer research. He swam for eight hours every day, and he was helped by a team of three people on a sailboat. Lecomte started preparing by swimming several hours in the ocean every day. He also practiced mental exercises every day. The mental part is much more important than the physical, and you have to make sure you always think about something positive, he said. I will do it next time. In 2013, five years before Lecomte started his second swim, an American woman swam for different reasons. In September, Diana Nyad 5 swimming from Havana, Cuba, to Florida, USA, a distance of 180 kilometers. She reached a beach in Florida 53 hours after she started her swim. 9

11 When Nyad was 12 years old, she swam six hours a day, and later set several world records, including one for swimming around Manhattan in less than eight hours in However, swimming from Cuba to the USA was always her dream. One reason for her swim in 2013 was that Nyad wanted to show people they can do anything if they work hard. This was actually the fifth time that she attempted it. Before this, every time she failed she told herself, I will do it next time. On this fifth attempt, she finally did it. On her first attempt, in 1978, at age 28, and the next four, all after the age of 60, Nyad experienced jellyfish bites that almost killed her, strong waves that pushed her back, very cold water, a burning feeling because of the saltwater, and she always faced the danger of shark attacks. Nyad had another reason for her swim. She wanted people to know that age is not a reason to stop trying something. She was 64 years old at the time of her swim, and she thinks that her age actually helped her in her challenge. I think this is the best age to try a difficult challenge. When you re older, you still have a strong body, but now your mind is even better, Nyad told reporters before her swim. Six weeks after her successful swim, Nyad swam for 48 hours without resting in a pool in Manhattan to raise more than $100,000 for charity. Nyad started training for her final Cuba to USA swim in January, 2013, with 12 hours of non-stop swimming, and slowly moved up to 24 hours. She said that while she swims she remembers books she liked, sings, and counts numbers. She also feels the mental part of swimming for a long time is harder than the physical part.
