53 RD ANNUAL REPORT Season 2012 / 2013

Vale - Wally (Walter) Spur Purvis We are saddened this season by the loss of our fi rst president.in season 1958/59 some young life savers bitten by the new surfi ng bug sat on the dunes above their private surf spot and realised that a patrol of what is now fi rst surf would be needed as their spot became more popular. They where Wally Purvis, Les Legg, Ron Gilmore. Opposition from the R.L.S.S. was great so they approached V.S.L.S. and went ahead with the formation of what is now Cape Paterson L.S.C. But to have a committee they needed a president, Wally put his hand up to get our great club started. With some training they offi cially started the club on 26/01/1960 Australia Day. These men with their close friendship made this club what it is today a great family club which is the envy of other clubs even today. Wally was a part of the rowing team in number 2 position and was known for jumping out of the boat on a big day of training out the bombora because he looked over his shoulder and saw that was coming but had to get back in as it was too far to swim back. He went to Lorne S.L.S.C. to get a hand down boat the Frank Beaureparie and renamed it with sponsorship Caltex Gippsland it s bow now hangs in our clubhouse, our fi rst boat. He was the driving force to get things done and not afraid to roll up his sleeves and pitch in to push club projects along and stories I have heard are too numerous to talk about without writing a novel. He and his wife Margret would always have a chat and buy tickets in the Friday night meat raffl e and always with a smile give me incites into early club life in the last few years talking to Wally. In summing up the whole community is saddened by his loss. He leaves behind wife Margret, children Rod, Daryl, Jennifer, Linda and 3 grandchildren. A great man who will be missed by all who knew him. - Mark Doogs Legg Vale - Brooke Collins This year, we lost one of the most brave and beautiful people i have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Brooke Collins was a student from Kooweerup Secondary College, and a member of the Cape Paterson SLSC. She lost her long battle with brain cancer, a battle which she fought with dignity and courage. Brooke taught us that every day is a gift, and that we shouldnt take for granted each person in our lives. She was always positive, and saw the good in people. Brooke tried her best in everything she did, and always looked to the future no matter how bleak it sometimes seemed. Brooke taught me that life is special, and we will miss her forever. - Christie Wilson

from the president In the same way as I have every year I will start this report with my thanks to every member, in official position s or not, for all the hard work in making the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club a great club to be in - every one of you is the part of the backbone of this club. Thank you also for allowing me to be involved in this great club as I am - it truly is a privelge. Once again it is also a pleasure to report that we have had another great season successfully managing our beach responsibilities, ensuring that no one was lost at Cape Paterson - our reason for being in existence as a club. Some more thank you s.... Starting on the beach, to our members with their toes in the sand (an old clubbie saying). I am immensely proud of all our active members for the job they do, the proffessionalism they do it with, their dedication and their passion. In this world of political correctness and liturgation the responsibilities you take on when you don the red and yellow on the beach is huge. All of you do an amazing job. To the leadership team on the beach - Dave, Em, Chels, Darcy, our patrol captains and trainers - another awesome effort and you should all be very proud of yourselves and what you have acheived this season. Dave in your first year as Club Captain great work with, I am sure, bigger and better to come too. To my fellow old fart regular s in the Retro Patrol - Doogs and TOC - after over 100 years patrolling collectively between us, 2 days a year is my limit patrolling but you guys do make it a pleasure and a great catch up with great mates. Thanks guys for your support, hard work and continueing efforts with our club. Chelsea and Laurie - your hard work with the training programs has again been exceptional. I know the frustrations of paperwork, diplomacy and the sheer workload of the job can be extremely challenging. Thanks s for your efforts here - training is one of the most important aspects of a surf life saving club. While we were not as high up in the final rankings of the patrol inspection results this season our patrols still performed excellently only losing minimal points in the competition. Supporting the on the beach team are many hard workers. In particular our IRB Captain and Gear Steward Darcy and Doogs the equipment continues to be absolutely top notch. You guys both maintain everything to an exceptional standard, all the while making sure we are not wasting any of our hard earned funds and where possible minimising the expenditure. Thanks boys. The admin team has also been hard at work too. Thanks to Keith (treasury), Francis (secretary), Simon (Vice Pres) for everything you contribute in your roles the work, the time, the advice and counsel it is all very much appreciated. Keith your work with the dollars and cents remains second to none, along with co-ordinating several fundraising events you do a great job and keep up the great work. Francis as well as doing the role of Secretary has also been co-ordinating the Aquathon and I thank him for this hard work. The Aquathon is our major event and fundraising opportunity. It continues to be a great day for our club each year. The Nipper program this year welcomed James and Ray to the helm. It was great to have this new blood on board with fresh ideas and motivation. The introduction of the evening nipper sessions followed by a social functions was excellently received and contributed to making the snail races an even bigger success this year. Nipper numbers were again around 2

the 100 mark and I know the team have even greater plans for the coming season. Thanks guys and thanks to all our Age Managers too. Competition is still building in our summer program thanks Dharsh for all your efforts here. We were represented at carnivals in the district and across the state, including the Vic Titles. Even some of us geriatric s managed to get a ski around a course at the Masters this year. Club champs were great again this year Dharsh thanks. TO C told you the flags were mine this year!! Winter competition was rekindled this season with the hard work of Josh Chambers - thanks getting us back onto the IRB comp scene. Some good results for a first season well done. Fundraising in general has again been excellent this season. Tavern raffles continue to be a great source of income (not to mention giving the club a great community presence), this year Arthur has been joined by Doogs to take turns and share the load. A couple of our annual fundraising events had best evers this season.... The new years eve tin rattle s (around Wonthaggi and then the Nippers around Cape) raised over $5000 a great effort by all involved. The Easter Trivia Night had a magnificent result this year (and was another sensational night). Even with a little computer issued stress before the start night giving me grey hairs it was a great night. Thanks to Chelsea and Darcy for doing the begging run for prizes. To Foony for teaming up on the MC ing of the night. And to Kirsty for doing all the admin and tasks leading up to and on the night. A great result raising more than any before - $4300. Makes all the hard work worthwhile. The Cape Cup Snail Races were again a huge hit and following the twilight Nipper session was a huge hit. Thanks again Doogs for your efforts here. Fundraising is something we need to be ever vigilant with and need to keep up the great momentum with. The Cape Paterson North development is still on the go in the background as a club we are remaining a presence in their consciousness to ensure our concerns are addressed and the club benefits where possible from this progress. Lastly, and very importantly, to my family again thank you. Without your support I could not do this role - Kirsty, Jess, Nic and Thom you are my rocks. Love you guys and thanks. > Dean Manns from the secretary On behalf of the Management Committee of the Cape Paterson Surf Lifesaving Club Incorporated, I submit for your consideration and adoption, the 53rd Annual Report and Financial Statements covering the activities of the club for the 2012/2013 season. This has been a great season for our club and it has been a privilege to be part of it. Again we have excelled at patrolling the beach and many of our members have gone on to achieve their goals through training and giving their time patrolling on the beach. The club president Dean Manns has provided strong and diligent leadership in a demanding environment and has maintained his tireless enthusiasm during his seventh year at the helm of the club. For this I thank him on behalf of the whole membership. Finally a big thank you to all the committee who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes all season to make this season so successful and to keep the day-to-day running of the club working smoothly. > Francis Brennan 3

from the treasurer Cash and Short Term Deposits The bank balance as at 30 April 2013 was $34,683 An additional $146,607 is held in term deposits at the Westpac and Bendigo banks. During the past year all existing deposits were rolled over for periods of up to 12 months at interest rates between 4.0% and 4.2%. Income and Expenses The 2012/2013 season has been a success financially for the Club; income is up and expenses are down. The income for the past 12 months was $105,720 and the expenses for the same period were $75,415. The Club completed the 2012/2013 year with an accounting surplus of $30,305. In recent years the Club has achieved an annual surplus of between $20,000 and $30,000. Source of Income. The key areas of funding to maintain the core lifesaving activities of the Club continues to be (1) Donation/Grants/ Sponsorship, (2) Bronze Camps, (3) Functions & Fundraising, and (4) Membership subscriptions. 1. Donations/Grants/Sponsorship Successful grant funding applications submitted during the year include the VESEP grant $19,679 (IRB & motor), Bass Coast Community Grant $2,500 (Resusitation training mannikens & Rescue Boards), VicHealth Grant $1,960 (Nipper leaders safety vests), Community Event Grant $1,500 (Cape Aquathon) and Victorian Government Sporting Uniforms Grant $1,100 (Patrol Shirts and Shorts). Inaddition, Life Saving Victoria directed over $13,000 of grant funding to the Club during 2012/2013. Significant donations were received from the Lions Club, IGA Ritchies and the Residents and Rate Payers Association. Donations totalled $7, Bronze Camps The Club s Chief Instructor ran four SRC/Bronze camps over the summer months which grossed over $25,000. (The 2012 figure has been inflated due to the late payment from Wonthaggi Secondary College the previous year) 3. Functions and Fundraising. The Trivia Night which raised $4,300 was the standout function of the year. The Patrollies tin rattle in Wonthaggi and the Nipper s door knock around Cape Paterson contributed $5,140. Sausage sizzles, Doog s Snail Race, the Easter Egg hunt and the Cape Tavern Raffles combined, brought in $10,000. A number of evening functions including the Nipper s Night-out and the Bronze Camp Presentation evening contributed to the Club s income. Income from the hiring-out of the Clubhouse hall for weddings and anniversary events raised over $ Membership Subscriptions After several years without change, there was a small increase in membership subscription rates for Membership subscriptions provided $15,000 (incl GST) of income for the year. Club Expenditure. Administration and Clubhouse costs continue to be closely monitored throughout the year. Two work parties were held during the off season to attend to Clubhouse maintenance. All the bunkroom mattresses (22) were replaced prior to the summer season at a cost of $1,100. Arthur Phillips continues to keep an eye on the building during the off season to ensure any necessary work is actioned in a timely manner. The Club has made significant advanced purchases of both patrol and Club leisure apparel. The focus this year will be to sell down this inventory. The Depreciation allowance and expenses for First Aid, have reverted to more typical levels after cost spikes in 2012 due to a new IRB, the ATV, the ride-on mover and the purchase of a defibrilator and accessaries. Insurance payments were inflated this year due to a timing variance with the late payment of the 2012 premiums falling into the current year. Audit Report Cardell Assurance and Audit have again audited the Club s accounts and their report is enclosed. > Keith Bartel. 4

from the club captain + vice club captain With the start of the season met with great enthusiasm, it was clear to see there would be a great summer ahead. It began with two school bronze camps, Koo Wee Rup and Wonthaggi, which bought wild surf and hectic conditions that snapped us all into action. This was a challenge for everyone, including the instructors who had to demonstrate their skills to the new bronzies in the wild conditions. Following these events, our club s annual requal was the biggest turn out for many years, showing a promising start to the patrolling season. January was quickly upon us, with many members taking time off to be a part of the annual summer bronze camp. This was a great week for all with not only new group of bronzies, but existing members gaining their training officers certificate which allows them to become bronze trainers. During this hectic time of year, we also had our nipper program running. This allowed many of our members to go back to their base roots of lifesaving and lend a hand to help nurture the future of our organization. These members were able to help out with aspects of the program that included water safety and team managing, which helps to ensure that our nipper program runs smoothly each year. A big thank you goes to our Junior Club Captains; Sean Moroney and Charles Dunnachie as well as Michael Temby for lending a hand with organizing the water safety for the younger generations. This eagerness however diminished in the month of March, with the teams struggling for members for a few weekends, however with a very dedicated core group we managed to scrape through this difficult period without any hiccups. The season then ended on a high as it drew to a close over the Easter weekend, with a fantastically healthy turnout to the patrols and our annual End of Season Lifesaver Party. With a secret theme organized by our Vice-Club Captain Emily, many members did not know what to expect, but were celebrated with plenty of food and fun activities. It was a fantastic night to help celebrate all of the achievements and hard work done by the active patrol, topping off what had been an incredible season. As a club though it was great to see that over 4450 hours were completed by our members and 12 people got over 100 hours, with many more getting close. This is a fantastic result for both our club and the district, showing that we have some very dedicated young members. For the third year running, the Beach Operations Committee (BOC) instituted the Patroller of the Month Award. This award is given to the person that the BOC considers to be the most valuable member of the patrols for that month. This is not necessarily the person who was there every day, but instead the person that contributed the most while on patrol. For the 2012/2013 season they are as follows. For: December- Riley Manks Riley has been an active member with us for many years now and this season he proved to be more passionate than ever. We are lucky to have Riley as the reliable and highly qualified member that he is, and were grateful for the time and effort he put in for this month. January- Ella Weston Ella has been one of our upcoming SRC patrol members and her enthusiasm this month was fantastic. She was always the first one to lend a hand in not only out weekend patrols, but was a valuable asset for nipper water safety over the course of the program. February- Kelan Hamilton-Sturdy It was a pleasure to have Kelan on patrols for this month. His initiative proved a valuable trait, as there was no need to ask Kelan to do something as he was always one step ahead. He was a refreshing member to be able to rely on over the month and it was fantastic to see him progress to gain extra awards throughout the season. March- Teagan Lowe As the weather got colder and our numbers dwindled, we were so grateful to have Teagan on our patrols this month. With her bright and bubbly personality, she was always helpful and a pleasure to have on our patrols each weekend. 10

In addition to these BOC also instituted the Patroller of the Year Award. This award is given to the person that the BOC considers to be the most valuable patrolling member that has contributed the most over the course of the season. Patroller of the Year 2012/13: Tahli Langborne Even as the season started with the cold whether Tahli was down there with great enthusiasm with requal. She continued this throughout the entire season, being a valuable member of the Cape Dev Camp Crew. Eventually Tahli got over 100 hours and being an exceptional role model to those that are younger within the club. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Patrol and Vice-Patrol Captains for the 2012/13 season. It began with a new system of application for the role, which was met with much enthusiasm. It enabled both of us to take in a good view of what people would like to do and why they would like to be in that position. With many of our new applicants being successful it was quite a stepping stone for all of us in terms of making sure that everyone knew their role and were capable of doing the task required. We were not disappointed to see that everyone picked up the responsibility within their first weekend. We look forward to continuing and improving this process next season. We would like to thank our PC s Calum, Casey, Doogs, Josie and Nik and as well as our VPC s Andrew Naps, Charles, Darcy, Josh, Melanie and Michael Temby. Thank you for all the support throughout the season, it could not have gone so well without you all. In addition to this, we would like to thank our ATV officer Josh Chambers and our First Aid Officer Jacinta Early for organizing and managing their sometimes difficult and frustrating roles with passion and eagerness to jump in and improve their area of responsibility. As well as our Chief instructor Chelsea for organizing and running the Bronze and other training camps that boost our active membership. To our IRB Captain - Darcy who always managed to maintain our boats to a high standard, and to the other members of the active side our Junior Club Captains Sean Moroney and Charles Dunnachie as well to all the other members of the committee both active and nonactive, who without the club could not run as smoothly as it does. In the off season we pursued, for the first in this century, IRB Racing. It was an eventful year with many of us never competing before, therefore having little experience; we relied heavily on the expertise of other teams who were immensely helpful. This enabled us to be very proud of our club competing again in a sport that we use to be very well known in. We as a team; Casey, Charles, Courtney, Dave, Dean, Doogs, Josh, Josie, Sean and Tahli, were very proud of our efforts throughout the entire season leading to a 4th position in IRB teams in the final at the Ocean Grove event. This has been an exciting addition to our competition team and we look forward to the improvement and expansion of this team for the next IRB racing season. We are both looking forward to another busy and successful season and hope to see you all early next summer! > Emily Rogers and David Potter 11

from the chief instructor The season of was another step forward for Cape Paterson SLSC, a great season welcoming many new clubbies into our family. This year the members gained a total of 200 awards ranging from our youngest candidates our Nippers who received their Resuscitation award, to our senior patrolling members who gained Advanced First Aid and Rescue Awards. This season we ran 3 Bronze Camps, including the Koo Wee Rup and Wonthaggi School Camps as well as the annual Summer Bronze Camp. In addition to the bronze camps, we ran training courses in the Basic Emergency Care Certificate and Resuscitation Certificate for Nippers aged years, an Advanced Resuscitation and Spinal Management Camp in February, and an IRB camp over Labour Day weekend in March. All this extra training and new awards saw us in good stead for a handful of high stress incidents our patrolling members had to manage. Including a major spinal incident where the Paramedic helicopter had to land on first s beach which was very well dealt with by our senior patrollers. We also performed quite a few rescues during the training camps, keeping trainers and candidates on their toes! This season has also been important in developing members leadership skills in both the patrolling and training aspects of lifesaving. Josie and Josh Chambers went to the Advanced Life Saving Camp in Lorne this year where prospective Beach Lifeguards attend a gruelling week of training in order to gain their Gold Medallion. Some of the challenges during the week included swimming the Portsea pier to pub (in September the water temperature is a challenge in itself), as well as rigorous training to prepare guards for patrolling an entire beach with sometimes only 2 people. I had the pleasure of mentoring on the camp and I can vouch for them in saying in was one of the most demanding but rewarding weeks. I am pleased to say that both Josie and Josh made it through the week and have been guarding beaches around Victoria over summer. A big congratulations to Josh for continueing on and completing his Gold Medallion award! 14

This year we also had members representing Cape Paterson in record numbers at the Bass District Development Camp, making Cape Pat SLSC proud by having the most candidates and mentors out of all the different clubs. The scenario-based training at the development camp enables candidates to further develop their leadership skills, and hone their first aid and resuscitation skills. Congratulations to all involved in the camp this year, I m sure you all learnt some invaluable lessons and met some friends for life. Candidates: Justin Burns, Amanda Marshall, Michael Temby, Sean Moroney, Charles Dunnachie, Tahli Langbourne and Annie Bloomfield. Mentors and Management: Melanie Burns, Calum Smith, Josie Chambers, Chelsea Bowman, Nik Foon, Sam Hines, Nyree Potter and David Potter who was running the show. To every member whether you completed 5 awards or just came down for an hour or two of patrol, thank you so much for your hard work. As they say there is no I in TEAM and our success is due to each and every one of you! This is my last season as Chief Instructor and I just wanted to say thanks to the committee for their ongoing support, in particular I d like to thank my sister Jess for encouraging me to take on this role 4 years ago, Dean Manns for his constant support and being available 24/7 as my sounding board, Darcy Manks my other half for putting up with my demands whilst doing paperwork at 2am and Laurie Aitken for pushing me harder, always coming up with new ideas, I know she will make an excellent Chief Instructor. Laurie you have worked so hard to get to where you are, and I know you won t let the training team down with your enthusiasm and knowledge of what the role entails. I know next season will be bigger and better with you at the helm and your awesome support crew. THANK YOU.... Instructors Laurie Aitken (Head Trainer), Darcy Manks, Jacinta Early, Casey Almarker, Jack Murphy, Riley Manks, Mark Doogs Legg, Emily Rogers, Nik Foon, Josh Chambers, Josie Champers, David Potter, Sam Hines and Justin Burns,. Water safety and helpers Michael Temby, Sean Moroney, Lewis Spanner Tanner, Naps, Roh Taylor, Tim and Brad Lenders, Charles Dunncahie, Ella Weston, Sara Stanvi, Melanie Burns, Amanda Marshall and Tahli Langbourne. > Chelsea Bowman 15

from the irb captain Another successful year in boats. The Inflatable rescue boat clubbies at Cape were kept very busy with bronze camps, water safety events, regular patrols, training and emergency responses. Also the IRB team made a dramatic and successful return to racing after an absence of many seasons. Doing well in heats and making finals on a few occasions, a very impressive effort for a new team in such a short and racing season. From the outset of the season we knew we were in for an interesting summer when conditions during a bronze camp caused havoc that resulted in a mass rescue of nearly 20 bronze candidates and instructors. Never before have I valued having an IRB close at hand as much as I did that day. I was proud of the water safety team as the IRB and boards allowed us to control this chaotic situation with little difficulty. Heaven knows where how we would have coped, or not, without the boat. Pervis after our first club president. This hull has been the delight of the racing team, assisting them to perform at a competitive level and will be an excellent boat for patrols and rescues well into the future. This report would not be complete without talking about Riley s capsize. Having driven all season in the toughest of conditions at the Bombora. The boat flipped in a foot of water on the last day of the season. Unlucky mate, fortunately managed well enough to spare damage or injury in that order of importance. A heartfelt thanks to all those who put in the consistent effort required to get us through another exciting and sometimes scary season doing what we do best. Pray for surf! >Darcy Manks Our boaties attended several major aquatic events including the Portsea huck and hold jet-ski event and the Melbourne Ironman. The IRB again ploughed into the chaos of the horrible conditions at the Ironman and rescued swimmers in trouble, again in conditions so bad that the wind was almost upturning stationary boats. We again had successful training and repair weekends learning new skills and tinkering with boats in the name of development of skills and improvement of equipment. During the season everyone involved with boats worked hard to ensure that we could provide a safe beach as always by doing the hard yards over summer, often getting up and launching boats in conditions that were cold and uncomfortable. This year in addition to our consistent patrol boat efforts, we also assisted other agencies in search and rescue operations and performed admirably under difficult circumstances retrieving a body alongside the police. Of course we were delighted to update our rescue boat fleet with the addition of a new Thunder-cat hull, christened the Wally 16

from the gear steward Each winter people think our club is sleeping, what they don t know is that we have a small band of young senior and junior members who come down and get our gear sorted for the coming season, it s done with no fuss and a bit of fun making my job easy every season thanks Darcy, Riley, Chels, Lori, Sninger, Josh, Foony, Casey, Doc and leader Dave Potter as my core helpers over grand final weekend. I must also thank Dave Brown for giving me a hand to fix an I.R.B. during the annual camp when it couldn t hack the pace and anyone else I ve forgotten please forgive me there are a few of you I know. The gear stood up well this season with only a few minor breakages to deal with this saves the club money in two ways, not having much to fix and doing most of the repairs ourselves this makes Keith our treasurer smile (this is hard to make happen at times).i feel it is time for some new blood in this post, if someone is elected I will assist them as much as I can to keep the gear in the good order we have had over the last few seasons, so thankyou Committee, President and members now a few seasons observations by the old seadog. Doogs likes it big (waves that is), Naps couldn t find his buddy bag and Josie liked the moveability of her wetsuit. Seeing the president looking for a nipper on the tin rattle to help him get money (you re just not cute enough Dean). Taking out anger in the bunkroom demolition with the gang then having a bonfire and a bit of fun that night (you had to be there). Had Toc think the club was on fire, it was just me and another bonfire. A thunder cat need I say more. Roll on next season can t wait. >Mark Capt Doogs Legg 17

from the nipper delegate s Summer attracted another strong turnout in the Nipper category for CPSLSC, with an increase to 98 registered Nippers enjoying a fantastic summer on the beach. The program for Nippers was condensed slightly compared to recent years, front-ending the schedule to ensure as many kids could take part before they inevitably headed home. We squeezed in 10 sessions in the first 14 days, and the strong turnout and parents positive feedback indicated the format worked well. Age Managers were Brook and Em (Under 6-7s), Marty (8-9s), Ray (10s), James (11-12s) and Katrina (13-14s). Katrina also undertook the SLSV Age Manager Trainers Course, and went on to train the other Age Managers to ensure appropriate certification was in place given her fabulous work preparing the older kids for the SRC and Bronze experience, and juggling apparel duties, Katrina s work was much appreciated. Parents and friends also figured prominently in the assistance to age managers, both on the beach and in BBQs and events, and to them we pass on our gratitude. The consistent feedback was that parents get a buzz out of being involved at every level (from helping on the beach to someone like Cam and his BBQ work), something we need to continue to reiterate. Some other notable aspects of the program included: - The introduction of hi-visibility pink vests as mandatory Nipper equipment. Initially treated with scepticism, these proved to be a terrific way of monitoring Nippers on the beach and in the water. - An early online registration incentive, in which pre-dec 14 registration was rewarded with a free rashie (from the Bonds contribution). We had 72 in the bank by that deadline, taking pressure off the typically hectic registration window. - The Nippers Championships were staged on the same day as the Club Championships. Being later in the month, the reduction in participation suggests we will look to schedule it earlier in the calendar in A clash of dates meant we could not support the Inverloch Carnival; CPSLSC reiterates its desire to attend these events and support other cubs, so we will seek to rectify this issue in the coming summer. - The introduction of afternoon (ie; 2-4pm) Nip n Sip sessions essentially a casual BBQ and social gathering immediately after Nippers. > James Weston and Ray Rust Plus, the program simply cannot operate without the assistance of the Club s water safety team: their enthusiasm and guidance, and willingness to support us with boat driving and strong attendance, was enormously beneficial in making the Nipper experience so positive for the kids. Thanks also to Peter Graham for his tireless, unflustered work on registration advice and assistance. 19

irb racing A spark was reignited this year with the rebirth of the Cape Paterson IRB Racing Team. The season approached us very quickly, with a rush to quickly organise a team, equipment, training sessions and registrations for each event. Training began early in the patrolling season with Wonthaggi LSC and Mark Scott coaching us so we were ready for racing season. David Potter, Sean Moroney, Tahli Langborne, Charles Dunnachie, Josie Chambers, Dean Sullivan, Courtney Jordan and myself made up the 2013 team. We trained at numerous beaches in different weather conditions to practise our skills for each different event. In IRB Racing there are five different races; Tube, Rescue, Mass, Teams and Lifesaver Relay, we competed in all of these. The season kicked off at Dromana LSC where we competed for the first time. Conditions were flat with a slight swell making it a great and preferable day for us to participate in our first race. The first race was really important as everyone adapted to the racing atmosphere and the hastiness of the event organiser to start races. The team did extremely well, participating in Tube, Rescue and Mass with Waratah Beach. Thanks to Mark (Doogs) Legg for making time to come down to official and support us. The second and third rounds where held at Ocean Grove SLSC across one weekend. By this round we were lucky enough to use the new Thundercat, which gave us a competitive edge. This enabled us to complete tighter can turns, saving us vital seconds which led to making semi-finals in Tube, Rescue, and Mass and a Final for teams. The Teams Final consisted of Dave, Sean, Tahli, Josie, Dean and myself, where we came third out of eighteen competitors. This accomplishment was hugely impressive as the Teams event requires extreme skill, fitness, consistency and teamwork. I was overwhelmed with team s effort and result, with many clubs congratulating us afterwards on our performance. The fourth round was held at Bancoora SLSC with us all waking up at 5:00 to make it down, only for the event to be cancelled due to rough seas and strong winds, which for IRB Racing can be very dangerous. Unfortunately this could not be postponed as TRE Victorian IRB State Carnival was the following week. The State carnival was held at Lorne SLSC where 28 clubs across the state and over 80 teams brought their A-game to the field. Conditions were close to perfect, with no wind and a sizeable swell. Competition was very close, only just getting knocked out of Semi Finals by one place for almost all events. This was ok as we tried our very best and had come such a long way from the beginning of the season. Most importantly, we had fun, were not disqualified for the entire season and our skills had improved tremendously. I would like to thank the team for a great first season, I couldn t be happier with our performance. The dedication and persistence has definitely paid off. A thanks also goes to the club for all their support, funding and use of equipment. >Joshua Chambers for the IRB Team 20

from the team manager This year, the competition team competed at the 3rd annual Bass district carnival held at Inverloch and the State Championships in Anglesea. The bass district carnival saw Roh Taylor, Lewis and Fraser Tanner and myself compete in many events throughout the daysome even making it into medal positions. It was a fantastic day for all! State Championships saw Lewis and myself compete in most of the beach events and the boards. This is my last season as team manager and I wish all the best to the incoming Team Manager to continue the spirit of competition at Cape Paterson and make the club a feature in all future carnivals >Dharshini Brennen Club Champs - Club Champs went well, there was a small swell but overall the day was a success. 25 the cape aquathon The clubs major fundraising event, the Cape Aquathon, was held on 20th January. Just over 170 competitors entered this years Aquathon and conditions were perfect with the sun shining, very little wind and a flat ocean. Congratulations to everyone who participated. First home was Brenton Ford in a time of 17:58 with Alice Baque being the first female home in a time of 20:23. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to make this a safe event. Work starts in the middle of the year with a paper trail and approvals from multiple authority s right through to the army of volunteers on the day. This year we introduced a new Emergency Response Plan thanks to the expertise in this area of Simon Marangio. Besides the major benefit of providing guidance during an emergency, constantly revisiting the plan has the advantage of discovering unrecognized hazardous conditions that may aggravate an emergency situation. I would also like once again to acknowledge the efforts of the large number of volunteers who help make the event safe. In particular I would like to thank Karen Marangio, Nicole Cowley, Gary Martin and John Gilliland. Special thanks to the Aquathon Committee, Simon Marangio, Dean Manns, Ron Shanks, Laurie Aitkin and Roby Kenny for all the effort put into making this a safe and fun event and to our long term sponsors. 26 national leadership college During February I had the pleasure of representing both Cape Paterson SLSC and Victoria when I was able to attend NLC 2013, as it was affectionately known. The National Leadership College is a week long program held at St. Paul s College, The University of Sydney. It brings together lifesavers from all over Australia, New Zealand and this year, the United Kingdom as well. It aims to help those in leadership positions or that have the potential to lead, to develop their skills and therefore thrive in there own environments. People who attend gain an understanding of the skills required to be an effective leader and developing these skills in an interactive and dynamic environment. Our group of 35 people were challenged, inspired, motivated and entertained constantly throughout the week, with each day being jam packed full of great experiences and once in a life time activities. Whether it was time for a seminar about leadership and ways to overcome hardships, talks from some of the greats of Life Saving including Trevor Hendy (Ironman Legend) or Stephen Leahy (CEO, Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopters), the in depth discussions about our own issues with other participants or the extra activities that pushed us to the absolutely limits of what we could do or would do, out of our comfort zone, such as doing a flash mob in Sydney Central Station. Though it was full of laughs and great times, with all the other amazing people from all around the world, it is the skills, ideas and support that were given to us by the mentors, guests and other participants at the college and since then that will stay with me and make me a better leader with our community, by helping applying these skills to the grass roots level of all aspects of my life. >David Potter 24
