4 Welcome to Shelly Beach SLSC 2017/2018 On behalf of the committee and life members of Shelly Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Inc., I would like to extend a warm welcome to all members and their families to what promises to be another great season ahead for Shelly Beach. SBSLSC was founded in 1955 and has a proud history of lifesaving and competition. Club members have patrolled Shelly Beach for the past 60 years ensuring the safety of not only our local residents but also the many visitors to our beach annually. Surf lifesavers are an iconic piece of the Australian national character and are part of the largest volunteer organisation in Australia. Surf lifesaving embodies and inspires a truly positive and uniquely Australian spirit and the training, equipment and knowledge that are taught to the younger lifesavers are the result of years of experience, dedication and wisdom since its foundation. SLS can develop pathways for career and employment opportunities and can provide valuable, lifelong friendships. Surf lifesaving exists to save lives, create great people and build better communities, priding themselves on offering mate ship, education and giving back to the community. Therefore, SBSLSC plays an important role in the community; dedicated to preserving lives on and off the beach and to encourage skills and personal development of their members to facilitate a safe environment and a greater community. Our vision is to embrace the wider community, enhance education and lifesaving standards while providing the community with a safe and enjoyable environment. SBSLSC is about inclusion, education, awareness, competition, sportsmanship, but most importantly, it is about participation and fun for everyone. Activities are aimed at teaching surf awareness and water safety. The club has a strong educational focus that includes educating juniors through to the senior ranks that include Surf Play, Surf Awareness, Surf Safe, Surf Smart, Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion. Other courses and awards include, IRB, First Aid, Beach Management, ARTC, Spinal Management and Radio Operations. For more information, check the communication section in this handbook as well as keeping an eye on the website. It is important that we remember that as an organisation representing surf lifesaving we are required to adhere to all SLSA Policies and procedures. Whether it is a risk assessment, equipment usage or even social media we must ensure that we are operating at all times within these bounds. If you have any questions or comments with respect to compliance, please speak to a committee member. During this season, we will be focusing on publishing relevant policies, procedures and forms to the website in order to reduce confusion. In the 2017/2018 season, we will be working harder on our engagement with our members as well as collaborating with other clubs throughout the Central Coast in delivering our SLS Central Coast Branch strategy. Surf Lifesaving Australia (SLSA) SLSA provides information and resources for all lifesaving requirements for Australia; and provides access to an online shop selling clothing, educational and surf rescue equipment. 8 Meetings Shelly Beach has one meeting per month. The meeting is open to all members. We invite you to attend to learn what is going on, what we could do better and for the committee to assist you and your family understand how the club is run and surf lifesaving in general. Meetings are held on the 2 nd Wednesday of each month and start at 7pm. We work to an agenda to ensure that our meetings conclude by 9pm (2 hours) The senior s Presentation night and AGM dates are to be confirmed. The Junior AGM will be held on 25 th March 2018 during the Junior Presentations at 1:30pm MEMBER PROTECTION Member Protection and Information Officer A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) is a vital role in all Surf Life Saving Clubs, and is responsible for providing information about a person s rights, responsibilities and options to an individual making a complaint or raising a concern. They can also provide information and advice to administrators and complaint handlers with regard to the SLSA Member Protection Policy. MPIOs should be impartial, meaning they do not mediate or investigate complaints. The MPIO can play a key role in ensuring our Clubs are safe, fair and inclusive. MPIOs do this through ensuring club members and administrators know their rights, responsibilities, and ensuring policies that focus on member protection are being implemented. Such policies may include but are not limited to the complaints policy and procedures, child protection policies, harassment and discrimination policies. SLS members can become a certified MPIO by taking the following steps: 1. Complete the online course, which is delivered by Play by the Rules. The course will take approximately four hours and participants can pause and resume the course at any time. 2. Once the course is completed participants will receive a completion certificate that includes an online certification number. 3. Complete the face-to-face workshop, which is delivered by NSW, Sport and Recreation. 4. On completion of the face-to-face workshop a certification number will be received. Participants will need both this number and the online certificate number to finally register as a MPIO to receive a certificate of recognition. Visit for more information. 8

9 Child protection and working with children Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSC), as organisations that involve children, should have a strong interest in keeping children safe. As such Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW) has developed a number of procedures and resources which complement the Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) Member Protection Policy. It is important for SLSCs to understand that good child safe policies and practices are the best way to reduce potential environmental risks and keep kids safer in our organisation. SLSNSW encourages all clubs to use a range of responses to manage the potential risks in their individual environments, including meeting their Working With Children Check (WWCC) legal obligations. While a WWCC can be an important tool in an organisation s approach to being child safe, they cannot identify people who have not previously been caught or are yet to offend. As such, although an important part of being a child safe organisation, practices such as reviewing risks, appointing Member Protection and Information Officers (MPIO), good communication and training, and managing allegations, are equally important. Working with children checks The WWCC is managed by the Office of the Children s Guardian (OCG) and involves a national criminal history check and review of findings of workplace misconduct. The result of a WWCC is either a clearance to work with children for five years, or a bar against working with children. Cleared applicants are subject to ongoing monitoring, and relevant new records may lead to the clearance being revoked. All NSW Surf Life Saving (SLS) members and employees (over the age of 18years) require a WWCC from April 2015 if they are undertaking a child-related role. However, there are a number of exemptions under the legislation including: Children (under the age of 18), administrative, clerical, maintenance or ancillary work not ordinarily involving contact with children for extended period; Very short term work (not more than a total of 5 days in a calendar year); Volunteering by a parent or close relative with a team, program or other activity in which the child usually participates or is a team member; and co-workers and supervisors where a child works. For more information visit the members section of the Surf Life Saving NSW website ( Member Protection Declaration Forms Even with the introduction of the WWCC, the SLSNSW Member Protection Declaration form still needs to be completed by all members. While the WWCC looks specifically at national criminal history and workplace misconduct in relation to child-related work, the SLSNSW Member Protection Declaration is designed to make members aware of their responsibilities in relation to criminal charges more broadly, anti-doping violations, and any other matters which could constitute risk to members, employees, volunteers, athletes or reputation. All new members, as well as any members renewing their membership after a leave of absence of at least one season, are to sign the SLSNSW Member Protection Declaration. 10 Member Safety and Wellbeing Policy It is important that you read and understand this document and its Annexures, which include the code of conduct; this is for your protection and interest. Any questions you may have can be referred to the President, Secretary or Member Protection Officers. The documents can be viewed on the SLSA website: All policies can be viewed at: Club House We have one of the best surf clubs on the Central Coast and its ongoing maintenance is our responsibility. Our clubhouse is our main source of income, must be respected, and left clean at all times. Whilst there is a caretaker in residence, security of our building is paramount, and the responsibility of securing our building lies with all club members. First Aid Room The First Aid Room is for emergency use only, and is only to be used by qualified club members. It is to be kept clean at all times and any shortage of stock should be reported to the First Aid Officers Terry Vella or Sue Davis. 10

11 Surf Life Saving Central Coast Patrol Season 2017 / 2018 Patrols Begin 23 th Sep 2017 and are every weekend & every statutory holiday until 29 th April 2017 Dates Times 23 th Sep 2017 to 10 th Dec am to 5pm 16 th Dec 2017 to 28 th Jan am to 6pm 3th Feb 2018 to 29 th Apr am to 5pm Daylight Savings Starts - Sunday 1st Oct 2017 Daylight Savings Finishes - Sunday 1st Apr 2018 Patrols Please don t be late, your team depends on you Please arrive in time to assist your patrol team members set up the beach. You need to be at the Club by 8.30am for morning patrols, not 9am after all the work is done. Substitutes. If you require a substitute for whatever reason please, ensure to arrange a similar qualified member, i.e. If you are a BM holder swap with a BM member, If you re a ARTC swap with an ARTC member so on and so forth for all awards categories. The Patrol Roster tab on our web site has our patrolling members awards listed. Our social media Face Book page is available for all members to use asking for subs if you cannot make your patrol. Direct contact with other members also works very well. Along with the above, please, keep your Patrol Captain informed. Patrol Uniforms Full patrol uniform must be worn in accordance with SLSA Patrol Uniform Policy. The minimum requirements for the national lifesaving uniform are defined as the following; SLS Patrol Shirt SLS Patrol Shorts SLS Red & yellow quartered patrol cap Wide-brim or peak hat This uniform will be checked by both Branch & Club, as failure to wear the uniform an result may missing out on GRANTS! Without GRANTS, there is less money to spend on equipment. Optional patrol uniform items include; SLS Patrol Rash-shirt SLS Patrol Jacket 11

12 Patrol Skills Per the Surf Life Saving NSW Standard Operating Procedures, there must be a minimum of three (3) Bronze Medallion/Cert II holders with the following minimum required on each patrol; 1x Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management, 1x IRB Driver 1x IRB Crew 1x Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ARTC) Power Craft Usage and Signs Only appropriated qualified members can drive and crew Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB) and the IRB captain should be aware of all operations. From 1 st Oct 2014 all drivers and Crew MUST wear an approved Personal Floatation Device (PFD) at all times. Power craft launch signs MUST be put up for every patrol. IRB/RWC drivers can be personally fined if there is an incident launching or returning to the beach and the signs were not up. All drives and crew people shall be well versed with the Power Craft Code of Conduct, i.e. SLSC - Safety, Laminations, SAR and Craft. A poster is located on the internal wall of the boat shed. Any negative interaction with the surfing community shall be reported to 1, your Patrol Captain, who interns reports onto the IRB Captain and, Club Captain if necessary. ATV Usage The Side-by-Side All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) belongs to Council. Therefore, we must conform to Council regulations as well as Surf Life Saving regulations for its use, which require a driver s license, the license must be checked for currency and indicated on the proficiency card. Provisional drivers are permitted to drive the ATV with appropriate P-plates displayed on the front and rear of the ATV. The ATV should always be driven at low speeds and no persons are permitted to drive in the tray unless in the emergency Tractor Shelly Beach Surf Life Saving Club has a tractor that must be used only by members that have been inducted. The tractor must be hosed down after each patrol and put onto charge so the battery is charged ready for the next patrol. Please report any issues to either Andrew Hessel or Martin Kerr immediately. Please DO NOT drive the tractor or ATV across the newly grass area in front of the club, use the concrete driveways. 12

13 Beach Patrol Guidelines - Patrol Captains Please ensure the following: 1. Your patrol is in attendance for their rostered patrol. 2. If any patrol members cannot attend, please contact the Club Captain. 3. Patrol members have signed Patrol Log Books with the correct start and finish times 4. All documents are completed accurately. 5. Patrol personnel are dressed in issue patrol uniforms. The red and yellow cap must be evident at all times. 6. The Club Captain is to be advised if a patrol does not have lifesaving equipment on the beach prior to sign on. This equipment is to be cared for, cleaned and neatly stored at the completion of the patrol. 7. The First Aid Officers are responsible for stocking the First Aid room and First Aid Kits. Please liaise with them if there are any problems. 8. Club mals are to be used by Surf Rescue Certificate holders, and above only. 9. Nippers are not to use club boards outside organized training times, please liaise with JAC Chairperson if this situation comes to your notice. 10. Encourage roving patrols and water s edge observation type patrols. 11. No person can drive the IRB without being certified. 12. ATV use is subject to Surf Lifesaving and Council regulations. Hazard lights must be operational. 13. Boat access zone signs should be displayed at all times. 14. Attempt to anticipate incidents and try to provide adequate briefing on what you expect from your patrol members. Record all incidents in the logbooks. 15. Ensure adequate shade, sun cream and fresh water is available for your patrol. 16. Make sure all members wear resuscitation masks and use gloves when handling patients. 17. Record all incidents in the respective logbooks. 18. Internal/External Patrol Competitions will be carried out randomly. It s up to the Patrol Members to maintain their skills & ask questions if in doubt. 19. Liaise with Duty Officers, if an incident occurs and, other Branch staff as matters arises. 20. Monitor the SurfCom radio channel at all times and ENSURE sign on is completed 13

14 Beach Patrol Guidelines Patrol Members Please ensure the following: 1. Advise your patrol captain if you re unable to attend your rostered patrol as soon as practically possible. Remember, it is your responsibility to organize a substitute, Pass on that person s name to your patrol captain in the days before your rostered patrol. Patrol uniforms are to be worn when on patrol. Please make sure you have been given a uniform. Our web site has a new uniform ordering tab, find the Operations tab then the Uniform Request tab. Then simply fill in the required boxes. If you do not receive, within a week or 2 your uniform, please, contact the Club Captain. 2. Protect yourself from the sun at all times and drink plenty of water. 3. Advise the patrol captain before leaving the patrol area. 4. All equipment that belongs to the club must be cared for. 5. Ask the patrol captain what duties you will be required to do should a rescue occur. 6. Know your signals and maintain your fitness. 7. You will be required to be proficient before December 31 st, each year. 8. Report all incidents to your Patrol Captain. 9. Be alert whilst on patrol and stand from time to time on the water s edge when possible. 10. Sign on and off in the Patrol Log Book correctly. 11. Whilst on patrol, work as a team. 12. Wear a resuscitation mask during resuscitation and gloves when handling patients. 13. The minimum qualification to crew in the IRB is attain 15 years of age, hold a current Crew Members Certificate or IRB Drivers Certificate. Be aware, that members of the public will always be watching you, so set a good example. 14. Internal/External Patrol Competitions will be carried out randomly. It s up to the Patrol Members to maintain their skills & ask questions if in doubt. 14

15 Patrol Procedures START OF PATROL 1. All members arrive at least 30mins prior to start 2. Minimum standards assessed (numbers, quals) 3. Equipment should be checked and set up for patrol (incl Oxygen stores and AED selftest) 4. Patrolled area location should be assessed and established 5. Fuel stocks should be checked and any requirements actioned (via the Fuel Officer) 6. Paperwork completed (patrol log) 7. A Patrol Briefing should be conducted with all patrol members, discussing: - Roles/Responsibilities - Scanning and Surveillance - Carrying tubes + radios when on beach - Radio Use (channels / callsigns) - Rotation Roster (Tent-Flags-Roving- Break-Tent) - Uniform standards & public image - Particular hazards / risks - Rules around leaving the patrol (asking Patrol Captain) - Use of ATV - Any equipment issues - Activities and training/scenarios for the day (in quiet times) - Inductions/introductions of any new members or substitutes. 8. Sign on with SurfCom END OF PATROL 1. Scanning/Surveillance maintained by at least 3 Lifesaver during pack-up if available 2. Rescue equipment still available during pack-up (radio, tube, ATV, IRB) 3. Paperwork fully completed (Patrol, Incident, Radio & Powercraft Logs) 4. Sign-off and appropriate information provided to SurfCom 5. All equipment cleaned and appropriately stored 6. Radios placed on charge 7. Outboard flushed and stored 8. ATV hosed thoroughly including all metal parts and under-carriage 9. IRB and ATV stored Rescue Ready for after-hours callouts 10. Any supply requirements or equipment damage/failures reported (same-day) to the appropriate club officer 11. Patrol Debrief should be conducted with all patrol members, discussing: - Rescues/incidents and key activities from the day (standout performances) - Any questions/concerns from the members & things learned - Upcoming events/opportunities - Training options / needs / desires - Rescue of the Month nominations - Next patrol date 15

16 Rookies All nippers in the U13 and U14 age groups are known as ROOKIES. The Rookie Program plays a significant role in developing our NIPPERS into future surf lifesavers. The program provides hands-on experience that is essential to developing effective lifesaving skills. Requirements All Rookies are encouraged to attend Rookie functions and events. Complete a minimum of 20 patrol hours each season in U13 s and U14 s. Advise the Club Captain and/or Patrol Captain if they are not able to attend their rostered volunteer patrols. Gain, as a minimum, their SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) Be in FULL Rookie uniform whilst on patrol (hat, shirt, shorts and cap if SRC qualified). All under 14 s must have passed their SRC by 31 December to be eligible to compete at branch and state carnivals. Complete their Rookie passport at every patrol. (This is to be handed in completed at the end of the season to your Rookie Coordinator). Begin training for their Bronze Medallion (must be 15yrs of age to sit exam). Rookie co-coordinators for the 2017/2018 season are Rebecca Crook and Shelly Merriman If you have any questions, please call either Rebecca, Shelly or our Club Captain Shaun Gersch on Any Under 14 competitors, who wishes to compete at carnivals, must have gained their SRC by 31 December. They are also required to have the regulatory minimum of 25 patrol hours. Courses and Awards Paul Dowdell, the Club s Director of Education organizes all courses and awards and can be contacted on or by gusdowds@hotmail.com. Please check SLSCC website, Shelly Beach Facebook Page and the club s website for dates and times of any upcoming courses. If you have your senior first aid, CPR, defibrillation or spinal award from a provider other than Surf Life Saving, please provide a copy to Paul so that it can be recorded on the list of your qualifications in Surfguard. The club will cover the cost of courses for active patrolling members, however non- patrolling, or non- active members must pay for courses at time of booking. Payment can be paid through Surf lifesaving online. Most awards will have a yearly proficiency and skills maintenance requirement, in particular if you obtained your Award before 30 June 2017 you will still need to do the skills maintenance / proficiency requirements as there may have been a few important changes for that award. 16

17 SBSLSC Skills Maintenance and Proficiency Updates All active patrolling members must re-qualify by 31 December This year the skills maintenance is divided into two categories, there is an online component that must be completed, the access is at Select Members Portal and log in Then select the education tab (graduation cap symbol) Select log in to e learning tab Select the training library tab Then the Skills Maintenance tab You will need to complete all the relevant modules for the awards you hold. The second part of Skills maintenance is the practical session which involves a run/ swim/ run, and board or tube rescue for Bronze Medallion holders, CPR for all members, and any ARTC award holders will have a relevant practical session and proficiency refresher. These sessions will be carried out on patrols on dates to be advised. Coaching Shelly Beach SLSC has many coaches this season that will facilitate all disciplines for any interested members. Check Facebook Page for training times, days and any important updates. Our Director of Surf Sports, Andrew Hessell will provide regular updates on training and coaching as the season progresses. All members are asked to take good care of all equipment. Club mals are only to be used by Surf Rescue Certificate holders and above. Nipper boards are for the use of JAC members only, and only during designated training and competition times. Skis can only be used by Bronze holders and all club craft is to be enjoyed only in appropriate surf conditions. All craft must be washed and stored correctly after use. Any damage should be reported immediately to the Board and Ski Captain Mark (Pup) Griffin on Board Hire Scheme A board scheme will be in place for mals and fiberglass nipper boards if sufficient craft are available. Craft will be available for lease for the current season. Fees and bond vary depending on craft grade. Members taking part in the board scheme are to participate in regular club training, carnivals & club events. Application forms and policy are available from the Board and Ski Captain Mark (Pup) Griffin. 17

Please attend JAC address prior to nippers for up to date information each week. CARNIVALS Uniforms All junior participants must wear a club cap whilst on the beach and ideally club costumes whilst participating in any competition including club championships. All senior participants should ideally wear club costumes whilst participating in any competition including club championships. They are required to wear club cap at carnivals. Our Uniform Officer will have uniforms available throughout the season. Pink high visibility vests are mandatory for all water competitors. This will apply to all competitors from Under 8 s up to Masters that compete in any water events for the 2016/17 season. The vests for all surf sports competition events should be the new seasons pink vest. Carnival Entry Fees Carnival entry fees are set for each of the three local junior carnivals. The cost for season are $16.50 per competitor per carnival, late fees are $8.25. Senior and Junior Branch carnival fees are set at $22.00 per competitor. The State entry and State Package cost varies from year to year based on what is included and how much fundraising is achieved. Officials and water safety The club needs to provide a number of water safety and officials for all carnivals, in accordance with ratios set by the organizing body (currently 10:1 for water safety). Each age 18

19 group needs to provide enough parents to sufficiently cover the water safety and official requirements for their age group. Unfortunately, if there are insufficient water safety or official that volunteer for each carnival, a ballot will be conducted to randomly select nippers that will not be able to compete. Excluded from the ballot will be nippers whose families have provided, water safety, officials, age managers, coaches or other volunteers contributing to the carnival. This is an open invitation to all parents to be directly involved and participate in SBSLSC nippers. To enable you to assist with water safety you need your SRC or Bronze Medallion and maintain that proficiency. Many parents complete their Bronze, and in doing so enjoy the learning experience and involvement in Surf Life Saving. You also get the best view of the races and keep cool on hot summer days. Water safety is rotated so you will not be out there longer than you can handle. To enable you to official you can complete the Level 1 officials course that is conducted by the SLSCC. Check with our Director of Education for SRC, Bronze and Officials courses which are advertised on the Club Facebook page. Official Courses are listed on the Central Coast Branch website. 20 NIPPERS AGE GROUPS Nippers are placed into age groups according to Surf Lifesaving NSW guidelines. For insurance reasons, risk management and as club policy, we cannot place nippers with friends, relatives or siblings if they are in a different age group (younger or older). Listed below are the age groups members will be in for the 2017/18 season if they are born between the following dates: 1 st October 2003 to 30 th September 2004 Under 14 1 st October 2004 to 30 th September 2005 Under 13 1 st October 2005 to 30 th September 2006 Under 12 1 st October 2006 to 30 th September 2007 Under 11 1 st October 2007 to 30 th September 2008 Under 10 1 st October 2008 to 30 th September 2009 Under 9 1 st October 2009 to 30 th September 2010 Under 8 1 st October 2010 to 30 th September 2011 Under 7 1 st October 2011 to 30 th September 2012 Under 6 20

21 Seniors Competition Please check the Facebook page for updates. Purpose To encourage senior participation and involvement and set an example for junior members. To provide additional opportunities for competition. Program: All events to commence at 8:00am sharp. Encourage participation in all competition events (ski, swim, board, sprint and flags). Events will not be run on junior carnival days or when SBSLSC is hosting a surf carnival. U15 s and U17 s will participate together in water events and separately for sand events. U19 s, Open s and Master s will participate together in all events (numbers pending). Club Championship Days: All events to commence at 8:00am sharp. Four competition days are scheduled with one full day dropped (for the purpose of the point score only). In addition to the events mentioned above, club championship days will also include an iron person. The iron person will follow the ski, swim and board and will be run as a separate event. The iron person will include the ski for U19 s and above. The iron person will be included in the club championship point score if the event is run in its complete form e.g. the ski is included for U19 s and above. U15 s and U17 s will participate together in water events and separately for sand events. U19 s, Open s and Master s will participate together in water events and separately for sand events. Points will be awarded on a 4/3/2/1 (first to fourth) basis for all events and the three highest point scorers in each respective age group will receive an award. The male and female point scores will be separate in each age category. Members will only be eligible for an award in their age category. A manager will be nominated to record results for club championship. Senior Perpetual Events: One day has been set aside for club members to contest perpetual events. The events contested will be an iron person and a tube race. Perpetual trophies will be awarded to the male and female who win the perpetual event in each of the following age categories: U15 s, U17 s, U19 s, Opens and Masters. The iron person will include the ski for U19 s and above. The ski leg must be completed in order to be eligible for an award. Members will only be eligible for an award in their age category. 21

22 U/6 and U/7 Membership U/6 and U/7 members may participate in activities on an educational basis only. Clubs are not compelled to run activities for these age groups. It is entirely up to the individual Club; however, children in these age groups may not compete in any point score/ championship events. A child may join a Club as soon as he/she turns 5 years of age. No Club is to accept membership of a child until they have reached the age of five years to comply with insurance requirements. A child who reaches five years of age after 30th September 2015 may join Nippers at that time; however, this child will be required to stay in the U/6 Nippers age group the following season. It is the clubs responsibility to explain this to the parents of the child. Listed below are the age groups members will be in for the 2017/18 season if they are born between the following dates: 1st October 2010 to 30th September 2011 U/7 1st October 2011 to 30th September 2012 U/6 22

23 Safety and parent participation A Parent/Guardian is required to remain in attendance during all training or nipper activities. Please liaise with your child s Age Manager regarding any competition or nipper matter rather than with the Water Captain or other officials directly. Nippers is about building surf skills, confidence and good sportsmanship. In order for your child to get the most out of nippers, please consider the following: Remember children participate in surf lifesaving for their enjoyment, not yours. Encourage children to participate - do not force them. Focus on the child s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing Encourage children always to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition. Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skill in all participants. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Respect officials decisions and teach children to do likewise. Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Without them your child could not participate. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person, regardless of their age, gender, ability, cultural background or religion. All members are expected to follow the SLSA Code of Conduct see web links in Member Safety and Wellbeing Policy section on page 8. This is a condition of membership. Nippers is entirely run by volunteers and this only happens with parent involvement. Each family is asked to make one member available to help out on Sundays. You don t have to be skilled in the surf, there are plenty of jobs to do and it can be great fun to be involved. Additionally, we ask all parents who are not Age Managers, officials or patrolling members to assist with beach set up and pack up when it is your age group s turn to help. Please arrive by 8am on the day. The roster will be on the website or from your Age Manager. 23

25 Water Safety The safety of our children is paramount! Events may be cancelled or moved to safer waters at the discretion of the Water Captain, President and Patrol Captain. All Water Safety MUST hold a Bronze Medallion or SRC with current proficiency and wear orange water safety caps & rash shirts for easy identification. Water events will not be conducted until there is sufficient water safety to ensure the safety of all competitors. We would love you to obtain your SRC or Bronze to perform water safety. See the Director of Education or check out course dates on Facebook. Proficiency Pre-Requisites Children are not taught to swim at Nippers. We strongly recommend that children attend regular swimming lessons until at least squad level. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength and confidence that nippers require to negotiate surf conditions. Surf swim training focuses on negotiating waves, rips and sweeps and using them to the swimmer s advantage. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in nippers. The following junior skill assessment must be undertaken by every junior member. Proficiency dates will be published on the website and calendar. Every junior member is required to complete the preliminary skills evaluation, conducted by the club, prior to any junior water activity, training or competition being undertaken in the water or on the sand. In addition, nippers must have paid their membership fee and completed registration forms before participating so that they are covered under our insurance policy. For insurance reasons it is not possible to give anyone a trial at nippers before joining. 25

26 Season Awards & Points Score 2017 / 2018 Attendance 1 attendance point will be granted for each club day attended where at least 2 or more events have been completed. Nippers commences 8 th October Attendance points start 15 th October Surf Education Training Nippers will go ahead rain, hail, or shine. Wet weather doesn t stop our nippers! We may move or cancel water events. Age Managers may take advantage of bad weather to conduct surf education for their age group. This will happen on one of the nipper days early in the season, selected by the Age Manager based on the weather and surf conditions. This is compulsory and must be completed by 31 December 2017 for any nippers competing at carnivals. 100% Attendance and Perpetual Awards The 100% Attendance Award will be provided for all who achieve 100% attendance at Nipper events (must complete 2 events weekly) between 15 th October 2017 and 25 th February 2018 (excluding non-nipper days). Members who attend a junior carnival in club colours but do not compete will still qualify for that day s attendance point. The Achievement of a Minimum of 50% attendance is required for eligibility of any age group award. An attendance exemption may be granted in exceptional circumstances when a nipper is competing in another sport at State level or above. A form is available for this purpose and the exemption must be applied for prior to the event. Please contact the JAC President. The Club has a number of perpetual awards for nippers each year, such as most improved, most consistent performance etc. Nominations will be sought towards the end of the season. The Achievement of a Minimum of 70% attendance is required for eligibility of any perpetual award. Please see the website for the Award criteria. 26

27 Championship There are three Shelly Beach Club Championship days for the juniors. They will be held on Sunday the 22 nd October 2017, Sunday 26 th November 2017 and Sunday 18 th February 2018 as per the club calendar. For each child, their two highest scoring days out of the three allocated Club Championship days will be included towards their individual Club Championship point score. The day the child scores the least number of points or did not attend will not be included towards their Club Championship point score. Please note the scoring is based on a day s performance as a whole and not on individual events. If conditions prevent any events from being completed, the next available nipper day will be utilised to complete all events. No points will be allocated for any events attempted but not completed. All competitors must complete each event unaided in order to be eligible for point s allocation. All registered nippers in the relevant age groups will be eligible to contest the postponed event irrespective of whether they attended the cancelled championship day or not. The Balcony manages ALL bookings and events for the Lupica and Stanford rooms respectively on the behalf of Shelly Beach Surf Club. The Balcony will endeavour to place priority on approved Surf Club events that are made via (Phone, or Online requests). 30 Gold Status in the Club Quality program In the 2016/2017 Shelly Beach achieved Gold status in the NSW SLS Club Quality program. We are very proud of this achievement and are one of two recipients in NSW of the award. We look to all members to challenge our standards to sustain and improve our club season by season. The Gold Status is awarded to clubs who: Provides direction and a pathway forward to gain recognition and ensure the future viability of the club Provides the resources to enable clubs to achieve and conduct events and programs to enhance the experience to their members Encourages the implementation of programs that will encourage the retention of existing members and increase of membership overall Silver status is the intermediate level and focuses on the business and operational components of Surf Life Saving and club operations and management. Gold status is the most advanced level and focuses on the high level continual improvement of Surf Life Saving Clubs. This level requires clubs to develop and use a future plan. Upon successful completion of the Bronze and then Silver levels, the club can apply for Gold status.
