Page 2 Winter is waning and Spring is around the corner. Planning for this summers events is well on its way. Check out the calendar of events on pages 10 and 11 and save the dates so you won t miss any. As the cover photos show, the pier at Sugar Pine, that was destroyed in a storm last winter, is finally being repaired. Or I should say rebuilt. The old wooden pilings have been replaced with steel ones and should survive the toughest storms. It took some effort by the park service to get the permits for the construction. While repair permits would have been easier to obtain, the park service wanted to improve the pier and make something that would last longer. It took approvals by 6 different agencies. So while it was a bit of a bother not to have a functioning pier last summer, lets give some credit for their taking on the more difficult project so we can have use of a pier that should around for some time. We have several new members of our board of directors. We plan to provide short biographies of the new board members in each issue. Of. 3 Page 3 Welcome everyone! Joel and Debbie Castro I hope everybody is enjoying the New Year. Now that December 2ist has come and gone, and the Christmas Holidays are over, it s our time to get ready for the up and coming boating year. Your Board and the Chair persons for our events for 2013 have just finished our annual planning meeting this past January 5 th and I can tell you all this next year as usual looks to be a spectacular year of events. Barring Mother Nature throwing us a curve ball, there will be more than enough things for all of us to have the time of our lives. Along with some new things proposed at several of the planned events, there will be a new Woody Whoopi that should be of interest to many of us. These new things will either be printed in our calendar of events or as far as the events themselves, they will be noted on the individual registration form in the issues of our award winning WESTERN WOOD magazine. There will also be articles in the. Please take the time to read it as there is a lot of work put into that great publication of ours. Great job Lee and Sandy Chase. When you see them give them a big Tank You also! Let s talk a little about the upcoming events. Each event has its own signup and registration form sent out to you in the Western Wood magazine. There are numerous things to do at each of these individual events so be sure to read them and see what works for you. Some of them have quite a few things to do and others have fewer things to sign up for. I can understand if you feel like it s just too much to do all at one time and that s o.k. I ve been known to pick and choose as to what I felt I could do and not do. That is perfectly alright! The main thing I would like you to try and do is please at least come and have fun with your other member friends. This is what we are all about, having fun with friends and talking about our passion for our Wooden and Classic boats. (And everything else that comes to mind!) I d like to throw in a little safety note here in regards to fire extinguishers. A couple years ago we had a fire in one of our member s boats that got most everyone s attention. I was told that our members that were there were trying their best to help and get the fire extinguished as quickly as possible and they were throwing their own extinguishers out to the boat involved in the hope that the extra units would help out. Great idea as the extinguishers that we carry on our own boats, usually only one as that is what is required by the Coast Guard, is only good for approximately ten (10) to twenty (20) seconds tops. At one of our Board meetings last year the suggestion was made to have each member carry an extra extinguisher on board that would be readily available for just the before mentioned possibility of another fire in the future, heaven forbid! I think it is a great idea and I have been doing so myself the last year. We (the Board) also are looking into the possibility of purchasing a larger extinguisher that would be on a roll around cart and would be taken to any and all of our events and be available for just the above mentioned occasion. I d like to hear from you on this idea. Since this is my first letter to you all, I hope I m not boring everyone! I have so much I d like to talk to everyone about; it s hard to get it down on just the one letter. I m going to go back to where I should have started and Say THANK YOU for trusting me to oversee our great club. The real credit goes to all the great people before me! They are the real Heroes that were able to foresee the great bunch of people with the same passion for old wooden boats and classic boats and the need to preserve them for future boaters to see and appreciate. There are still a few of them with our club and when you meet them, you will be able to pick them out as they still have that look and big smile when you mention wooden and classic boats. Introduce yourself and be prepared to have a new friend for life! Your New President and Friend for life

Page 4 The Bass Lake event celebrates its 23 anniversary this year. Glory Beall played a big role in getting this event started and it continues to be a fun event for everyone. It s an opportunity to get together and experience the adventures Bass Lake always seems to produce, whether it s a freak snow shower or a bear crashing our B.B.Q., not to mention the sometimes daunting adventure of putting our boats in the water for the first boating event of the year. One evening while Joel and I were channel surfing on the television, we came across Huell Howser with California s Gold television show. They were trying to find the location of the geographical center of California. They had their ways by using satellites and other devices. It was determined that Bass Lake is right in the middle of California. What better place could there be for the Southern California and the Northern California Chapters to meet? This year we will boat over to Millers Landing for the traditional Hot Dog B.B.Q. on Friday night, we are not sure if the bear will attend. This is hosted by the Southern California Chapter. All we have to do is bring a dish to share. It is always enjoyable to sit around the bon fire to visit with everyone that we haven t seen for awhile. This year we will give out the Cuties Little Monkey award again so look in your packet and see if it s you. Saturday morning Northern California will host a continental breakfast down by the docks to get the day started. The Bass Lake Lions Club will start their show around 9:00am. We hope to help them with as many boats as possible. Feel free to come and go while the show is going on. The people that come to see our boats like to hear our engines as much as we do. Saturday we will enjoy a Lake Side dinner that is catered by the Pines. After a long day we will be ready to eat a wonderful dinner that has always proven to be the best. There will be a no host cocktail hour before dinner will be served. Sunday of course will be the poker run followed by the Lake side Breakfast Buffet and awards that the Lions club provides. This year all of us will be awarded with a FULL LAKE!! We have heard that they stopped all the work on the Dam and it WILL BE FULL!

Page 5 Wayne Mooers interviews Northern California Chapter founding member Glory Beall In the beginning of our Northern California ACBS Chapter founding, at the early formation of our classic boat show events, at the Tahoe Yacht Club, at Bass Lake, and even the more recent establishment of the Tahoe Maritime Museum Glory was there and helped make it all happen. Last year marks the 40 th anniversary of our first organized Lake Tahoe show at Chamber s Landing in Let s take a moment and tip our hat to Glory Beall and the others who were there in the beginning. I thank Glory for letting me share her 40 years of classic boating stories with you, and I also thank Steve Lapkin and the other founding members for contributing to this article also. About Glory: I was born in San Francisco yet was raised in Piedmont, Sacramento, and then later on grew up in Homewood and Squaw Valley during the great 1960 s era. My Dad, Ross Beall Jr., was in the shopping center development and management business and together with my sisters our family summers were surrounded by wonderful memories of our west shore Tahoe times. Homewood during that era was the center of the Tahoe wooden boat community, and Obexer s Boat Company was the center of my boating world. I spent the summers working for the Obexer family. Jake Obexer (Jakie) was the brother I never had, and among other things I ll always remember those early morning water ski runs we had testing customers boats - to make sure they operated correctly! Jake is dearly missed, along with his mother Edna s egg salad sandwiches - which she insisted we all have during our lunch hour at their home. Yet in Jake s daughter Sarah, and now in her sons, I see the Obexer family story continuing, and it makes me smile when we get together. Dad was a long standing active member of the Tahoe Yacht Club and I followed suit as a board member for 8 years. Then in 1984 I became the first woman Commodore since the club was founded in Together Dad and I were involved in many committees and yacht club activities and looking back, I remember helping organize the junior program outboard races, water ski carnivals, and even sailing events when I owned my Hobie Cat. We were also active with the American Power Boat Association with my 1974 Rayson Craft Wild Fire, and we followed the racing circuit around the United States from Florida to Texas. Life with Dad was always exciting and we spent a lot of time together. About our boats: Some place in the early 1960 s I recall my first classic boat ride on Meeks Bay in the 1934, 27 foot, rolled deck Chris Craft named Stardust At that time the Miller family owned her, and I was lucky to have Marilyn Miller as my good friend. I will always remember my first ride in Stardust; off we went to Meeks Bay on a summer boat ride and picnic, and it is a moment that lasted forever in my mind. Stardust is now on display as part of the Tahoe Maritime Museum s proud Tahoe legends. Then Dad bought Cutty Sark a 1957 Chris-Craft Capri from Chambers Landing it was one of their summer water ski boats. We put a lot of hours and smile moments on that little boat during those endless Tahoe summer Loon days. Matter of fact, I remember all the times Dad took us around the lake in Cutty Sark in the early 1970 s looking for other wooden boats and inviting them to join in a planned gathering of Tahoe wooden boats at Chambers Landing. Later on, in 1984 I purchased and restored Loon, a rare Fay & Bowen, and that s another story in itself. Glory Beall with her father, Ross (far left) along with Rich Loverde and Stan Hiller. 6 Page 6 About the first shows: They called them Chamber s Punch dockside gatherings. And maybe the punch is what fueled the idea we should get all our Tahoe wooden boats and families together for a happening. The prior years of unlimited boat racing and like gatherings on Tahoe were now memories 1962 was the last of Harrah s unlimited hydroplane races. There were still a number of interesting larger Antique class Chris and Gars around the lake along with our 50 s and 60 s era wooden boats. We started informally meeting at Chambers Landing Resort, (south of Homewood on the west side of Lake Tahoe) with our classic boats and watching the other wooden boats on the lake go by. Along the way we started talking more and more about getting them all together and having a show. In the summer of 1971 I remember actually cruising around the lake with Dad in Cutty Sark spreading the word and handing out fliers about an upcoming gathering of classic wooden boats. Plans were taking shape to have a formal show the next summer. I remember that morning in July 1972 we were standing on the Chambers Landing docks overlooking the lake wondering who would show up. Then, over the horizon came Stan Hiller with Shecog and Grafton Worthington cruised up from Camp Richardson. My friend Marilyn Miller and family idled in with their Chris Craft Miss Trial, (Marilyn was an attorney) and down from Carnelian Bay Dick Clarke also showed up (I don t remember which boat he brought in). Wilber Miller (Shepherd family) brought in Dork, his 19 Craft Racing Runabout, and the Wheeler family came in with Kathryn, a Gar Wood. It was actually happening! There were about 10 proud owners that came that first year with their families and picnic baskets. This was the first known formal gathering of the Tahoe classic wooden boats. Even Jake Obexer motored over in a Duck landing craft complete with a chicken hanging off the top yard arm. It was then, as it should be now, a good- time gathering of friends with classic boats as a starting point of our common interest. At the first formal show of 1972 we did do some initial judging and the race for perfection began. Joe Frey from Sierra Boats and Fred Main from Tahoe Boat Company officiated for us. A year later Steve Lapkin joined in his racing runabout and Steve remembers George Crist had a racing runabout called Beelzebub -which was the pole setter racing runabout for that era. He d always win the award! During that time we use to raft up our boats after the show at Glenn Owens s home and have the trophy presentation and picnic after the show. Insert image, Glenn Wilson s home.w/boats rafting- space permitting. We held the show at Chamber s Landing each July, then in 1975 we had more boats and people than we could accommodate, thus the show moved up to Tahoe Boat Company s marina in Tahoe City. By that time we had about a dozen boats on display and the Wheeler, Hiller, Best, Harris, Harvey, Veihmeyer and Olson families were also exhibitors during 1977 Show at Tahoe Boat Company site. Courtesy of Al Schinnerer Collection. Glenn Wilson home, 1970 s era trophy presentation and picnic. Al Schinnerer Collection. the early show days Steve Lapkin remembers. Throughout the 1980 s the classic boat owners and the public interest in the shows kept increasing and then in August of 1993 the show relocated to the current Sierra Boat Company facilities using the Concours d Elegance event name. It was now a three day event followed by wooden boat week and promoted by the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation. Original member and exhibitor Al Schinnerer credits Steve Lapin with the organization and growth of the Concours shows over the years, yet Steve is quick to recognize the show changes and growth doesn t diminish the fact that the Beall family s Chamber s Landing events were the incubators of what we recognize today; they were the creators of our current Tahoe Shows. The shows brought classic boating people together, which eventually lead to our Chapter s ACBS founding. About our Chapter s founding: Out of the 1972 beginnings of our Chambers Landing Show - which was basically a group of boating friends with common interests getting together and having some fun - evolved an on going discussion to form a Lake Tahoe chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, Inc., which was then headquartered Lake George, New York. A Petition for Chapter Status was prepared

Page 7 and signed by 17 of our region s existing ACBS National members as you can see on the petition. Most of these signatures were Tahoe Yacht Club members also. I was Commodore at the time, and Steve Lapkin was Secretary Treasurer of the Yacht Club..(Insert petition copy) It should also be noted our chapter members Bill Dodd had previously joined ACBS National in 1976, Al Schinnerer ( 79), Charles Pheil( 79), John Bartell ( 82), Don Harvey ( 82), and Bob Boldt ( 82); all were ACBS National members prior to our Chapter s founding in I still remember Steve (Lapkin) and me flying back from the ACBS National Board of Directors three day conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. That trip was memorable in many ways. Steve states Ray Nelson was in charge of ACBS National at the time and further credits if it wasn t also for David Kidd (the existing National President) and Jay Higgins III (incoming National President), a lot of what was eventually afforded us, or at least the red carpet treatment, was well laid out for us by these fellows. We will also always remember the meetings and banquet dinner. There were several hundred classic boating members from all over the country attending the meetings and dinner we were the new guys from California someplace west of the Rockies! We were seated at the banquet dinner next to the Turcotte brothers, who were reproducing the Gar Wood boats at that time. The first dinner course was peanut soup! Glory and I will always laugh at this. What s this peanut soup entrée? Glory and I were accustomed to peanuts in the cocktail lounge, and I don t remember the rest of it, but I know we had peanut soup that night! A lot of classic boating owners encouraged the formation of our Chapter. By 1984 our show was now being held in Tahoe City at the Tahoe Boat Company, and members of the Tahoe Yacht Club were always an important part and equally encouraging our Chapter s founding Glory credits. I was a Tahoe Yacht Club board member that year and became the first woman Commodore of the yacht club - which was founded in Allan Furth a major classic boat collector at the time sat down with Steve and me in August of 1983 and reviewed the formalities and necessary paper work in petitioning for the formation of our Chapter. Of the 17 original signatures on the Petition, Glenn Wilson(or Glory Beall, fact check) went on to become our first Chapter President, and the balances of those original 17 signatures were significant members of our Chapter for a long time. Today our club has some 500 members, and our Tahoe shows and events are recognized world over as a significant part of classic boating. At the 2012 Concours for example, we likely had more of the Marque Class Riva boats in one marina assembled than any other Riva gathering in the world! It was quite as scene. There are a lot of others who made our chapter an ongoing success; I m just glad to have also been apart of it. Standing in the Show's doorway greeting my friends as they enter the show makes me happy. Going back to the shows is like going to a family reunion. Now I m seeing a lot of the next generation's kids showing up - like the Shepherd boys now taking care of and continuing to show their grandfather's (Wilber Miller) boat Dork for example. And Stan Hiller s son introduced himself as he brought Shecog back to the show again. And so the Glory Story continues: The years have gone by quickly, and over my past 40 years of Classic Boating it s good to now simply overlook our shows and see that our dreams have come true. To a large degree, my time now is about my fishing pole and the waters around my Newcastle home. I still have an antique 1800 s era 21 foot lapstrake fishing dory Captain Pomin built and used on Tahoe as his personal fishing boat. It has a beautiful built-in bait box and even leaks a little bit when I launch her. I need you Tony Brown to fix the leaks! Life is also about my llamas, Alpacas, and my dog named Zephyr. Yet I enjoy getting together with my Tahoe friends also Tony and Sabina (Brown) live close by, and Bernie and Carol Atkinson host me during the Concours week. I really do look forward to standing at the show s entry and being the unofficial Concours greeter each year. I m proud to be part of our classic boating community, and I m proud of what we all have accomplished. In the beginning, there was Glory! 12 Page 12 WOOD & Glory XV A Gathering of families and friends on Clear Lake to enjoy fine Antique & Classic Boats This year promises to be another great year at Clear Lake as we celebrate the fifteenth renewal of the annual Wood & Glory event. Our venues will again be the Clear Lake Vista Resort ( formerly Ferndale)on Soda Bay and the Konocti Vista Casino Marina docks in Lakeport for our Saturday boat show. John Lahti LAHTI'S WOODIE WHOOPIE On Friday night May 31 st the Lahti family will once again kick off Wood & Glory as John, Mary, and family welcome us back to their great lakefront home near Buckingham point. This Friday night Woodie Whoopie is a highlight of the Wood & Glory weekend so don t miss it. Come by boat or car. The Lake County Sea Scouts will be at the dock to assist boaters as needed. LEGACY with Mt. Konocti in background Bring your favorite entrée to cook on the ACBS barbecue and a dish to share. We will supplement that with salad, garlic bread and liquid refreshments (wine from local Vintners). Another of our favorite member/sponsors, Bob Maher, will be there to help kick off our all important Sea Scouts benefit raffle. Don t miss this great opportunity to make new friends and renew old friendships while we kick off the summer boating season at Clear Lake. SATURDAY CRUISE & PICNIC On Saturday morning June 1st, we will cruise from Soda Bay to the sheltered Marina at Konocti Vista Casino Resort about 15 minutes away. This Marina with it's well constructed docks, individually assigned slips and smooth protected water worked very well for us at last year s event and Konocti Vista Casino is anxious to have us back. As in the past, those coming from Konocti Bay, Buckingham or other distant locations should leave in time to join the main cruising group in front of Clear lake Vista Resort in Soda Bay for the trip up to the Marina.. At the Marina we will be greeted by live music, an outstanding catered lunch and members of the local community anxious to see our boats on display. Again this year there will be many classic cars on display in conjunction with the No Name Car Club's annual Roundup Classic car show being held in the casino parking area. The combination of classic boats and cars gets very positive spectator response by providing something of interest to all. With a great lunch, fine boats and cars, good music and great ACBS friends there is much to enjoy. SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER This year our Saturday evening dinner will be held at the Buckingham Homeowners Clubhouse located in Buckingham park. We ll have a great catered dinner in a private lakeside setting overlooking great old oak trees, a beautiful lawn area, and of course Clear Lake. SUNDAY ISLAND PICNIC CRUISE On Sunday June 2 nd we are planning to go back to Steve and Linda Sherwin s amazing Weekend Island for our picnic cruise. Wood & Glory first visited the island on our 2012 Sunday cruise and for many of us, it was the highlight of the weekend. This year Steve and Linda have graciously invited us back to picnic on the lawn under the grand old oak trees with David Neft providing easy listening music for us. Entry forms are available at or contact either Doug Reed (707) or John Lawrence (707) For those who love the internet, Lee Chase has set up an on-line registration with payments through PayPal. WOOD & Glory XV tahoewoodenboats.com I am sad to have to tell you that on, Feb 13, David Wright passed away. He suffered a heart attack, February 10 and did not recover. His family and many friends stayed at the hospital and were by his side to say their good-byes. Dave was an admired restorer of wooden boats with many TYC Concours winners to his credit. He was also an all around good guy with many loyal friends. Our lives will certainly be diminished by the loss of such a warm, friendly, hard working, and loving person. Kelly and I count ourselves blessed to have been able to share some of our life with him. Jane Bane

Page 14 Officers and Board of Directors Changes for 2013 At the January Board of Directors meeting some changes were made to our Officers and Board of Directors. Because of increasing demands from his real job, Preston Smith has regretfully resigned his post as 2nd Vice President. We appreciate all the work he has done for our club, including organizing the Delta Cruise for the last several years, and hope he can return to the board in the future. Bob Mullarky has agreed to move up to the 2nd Vice President post and Barbara Foster will move to 3rd Vice President to replace Bob. Wayne Mooers has joined the Board of Directors class of 2014 to fill the place vacated by Barbara. Valerie Good has also resigned because of health issues. We wish her the best. Ronda Little has stepped up to replace her in the class of We also have new Board members voted in at the annual meeting to the class of These are: Terry Clapham, Layne Davis, Robert Gaestel, Peter George, and John Lawrence. Thanks to all of you for agreeing to serve!! Ronda and Bill Little in Bleach Blond Ronda Little has joined our Board of Directors this year. We welcome her help and her experience indicates she can teach us something. Ronda was born in Santa Maria, CA, but was raised in San Jose. She graduated from San Jose State in 1970 and received her credential in Elementary Education in She taught in the Cambrian School District in San Jose from In 1973 she met Bill Little and married him in He had two young children from a previous marriage who came to live with them in Ronda was a stay-at-home mom from 1979 until she returned to teaching again in She once again worked for the Cambrian School District until her retirement in The day after she retired, Ronda and Bill left for a six-month adventure in their RV. They toured most of the United States as well as many of the provinces of Canada. Shortly after they returned home, they moved to what they thought was their dream home in Hollister. In 2007 Bill developed a huge interest in wood boats and joined ACBS even though he didn t have a boat. It didn t take long though for him to find a 1954, 20 Chris Craft Riviera named Beach Blond. Of course a boat needs a place on the water, so in 2008 they bought a weekend home in Discovery Bay. Discovery Bay was such a great place to live, that they moved there permanently in In January of 2012, Bill suddenly passed away. Although the past year has been difficult, Ronda is very grateful to her ACBS friends for all of their care and support.
