3 THE FIGHTING ILLINI SEASON PREVIEW The Fighting Illini Women s swimming and diving team looks to build off of its recent success, following three consecutive winning seasons. Illinois will look to make it four consecutive winning seasons for the first time since This year we have a small senior class with three athletes, said head coach Sue Novitsky. However, those three are having a big impact on the rest of the team. It has been very beneficial that [the seniors] have stepped up their leadership and are really taking to heart the importance of a strong team relationship. It is not just the seniors, but all of the classes have been active in giving back to the team and working to be the best teammates they can be each day. The Illini graduated nine seniors from the squad, but will welcome back 16 experienced swimmers and divers from last year. The team will miss Lori Lynn, who leaves Illinois as the school record holder in the 50-yard butterfly, as well as Jennifer Coady, who departs with the 50-yard breaststroke school record on her resume. However, Gabbie Stecker headlines a small, but talented, senior class that also includes Audrey Rodawig and Amelia Schilling. Arguably the strongest class for the Illini, the junior class is led by last season s team MVP, Samantha Stratford, who broke school records in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.12) and 200-yard IM (1:59.69) last season, as well as being named the Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week on October 18. The class also features Ashley Aegerter, who swam the fastest 200-yard breaststroke for the Illini last season (2:15.35), Gabrielle Bethke, who held Illinois four fastest marks in the 200-yard freestyle a season ago, as well as Nelly Casas, Raquel Corniuk, Adelaide Curry, Kaitlyn Joyce and Sascha Meyers. Coming off of a successful freshman season, the sophomore class will look to continue that success this year. Madeline Kuhn, who posted the second-best one-meter and three-meter dives on the season and was also the only Illini diver to compete in platform diving competition on the season, headlines the class along with Megan Vuong, who earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award on October 28. Rebecca Eckblad, Autumn Ledgin, Aby Olson and Gabrielle Serniute round out the sophomore class. Illinois welcomes 12 new student-athletes to the program in a promising freshman class, as Kristin Anderson, Rebecca Corzine, Mary Margaret Fry, Monica Guyett, Molly Hein, Jamie Kolar, Kathryn Kosinski, Lauren LaPeter, Emily Martin, Fiona McDermott, Haley Nelson and Morgan Young look to make an immediate impact for the Illini. Butterfly Junior Stratford and senior Stecker headline butterfly competition for the Illini. Stratford currently holds the top 200-yard fly time in school history (1:59.12), followed closely by Stecker (1:59.24). Individual Medley and Relays With the seniors that graduated last year, many athletes will be competing for relay spots. The Illini will count on 200-yard IM school record (1:59.69) holder, Statford, as well as Serniute and Stecker to continue to contribute in individual medley competition. The squad will also look to the freshman to compete in relay events. Diving Diving coach Chris Waters will look to junior Corniuk, who just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2015, and sophomore Madeline Kuhn to carry the team on the boards this season. Freshmen Lauren LaPeter and Morgan Young will also be expected to contribute immediately. Schedule After just three home events a season ago, the Illini will welcome Michigan State, Marshall, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Arkansas, Iowa State and Nebraska to the ARC Pool this season. The squad will also travel to compete against Northwestern, Rutgers and Notre Dame. The Illini open the season with the annual Orange and Blue Intra-Squad Meet on Friday at 5 p.m. at the ARC Pool. For the Orange & Blue meet, it allows the coaches to assess how the team acts in a competitive environment and look at how the team is responding to the training, said Novitsky. It allows us to look at areas that we may need to address more in practice. Plus, we have the official start to our competition season coming up in just over two weeks and it will allow the coaches to work out some questions for the meet line-up. Promotions We have a large freshmen class with twelve athletes, said Novitsky. They have brought a lot of energy to the team so far in practice. As a group they have had a lot of success in the pool and have the opportunity to really help out the team in meets. Sprint Freestyle With the graduation of Lori Lynn, the Illini will lean on Gabrielle Bethke and Lori Lynn to produce in the sprint freestyle. Bethke posted the team s second best 50 freestyle time (:23.39) at the Big Ten Championships. The Illini will be holding a pizza party and offering swimming trivia to interested fans during the home meet against Michigan State and Marshall on Oct. 21. The following meet on Oct. 22 will be breast cancer awareness night, as there will be giveaways such as water bottles and t-shirts to fans that wear pink. There will also be a Hawaiian themed night against Iowa State on Jan. 14. The Illini s Senior Night will be January 21 when the team welcomes Nebraska to the ARC Pool. Middle-Distance Freestyle The Illini will look to seniors Stratford, Stecker and Schilling to continue to lead the way in middle-distance freestyle. Stratford holds the second-best 200-yard free time (1:48.13) in school history, while Stecker owns the schools record in the 500-yard free (4:46.99). Distance Freestyle Sophomore Casas and senior Stecker will look to contribute in distance freestyle for the Illini, as Casas swam the team s fastest 1650-yard free time (16:57.70) last season, while Stecker posted a team-best time of 10:17.90 in the 1000-yard free. Backstroke and Breaststroke With the departures of Lori Lynn, Jennifer Coady and Sloane McDermott to graduation, the Illini will look to, Ashley Aegerter and Gabriele Serniute to lead the way in the back and breast events. Aegerter will look to build on last season s success, as she posted the team s top 200-yard breast time of 2:15.45 at the Big Challenge. Serniute made a nice impact in her first season with the Illini, posting top-5 times on the season in the 50-yard back, 50-yard breast and 100-yard breast ILLINOIS SWIMMING & DIVING // 3

4 THE COACHING STAFF SUE NOVITSKY HEAD COACH // 17TH SEASON Sue Novitsky enters her 17th season as the head coach of the University of Illinois swimming and diving team. Novitsky, who joined the University of Illinois swimming and diving staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 1994, begins her 22nd season as a part of the Illini program. After three seasons of working as the volunteer coach, Novitsky was promoted to assistant coach in the fall of In August 2000, she was hired by former Director of Athletics, Ron Guenther, as the fifth head coach in the program s history. Novitsky s first year as head coach was filled with success as three Illini qualified for the NCAA Championships, and Jessica Aveyard repeated as an All-American in the 200 backstroke. Novitsky s swimmers continued their success at the national and international levels, as Aveyard and Ilkay Dikmen qualified to represent their native countries at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Aveyard, swimming for the United States, reached the semifinals in the 200 backstroke, while Dikmen, a 2000 Olympian, competed for Turkey in the 200 breaststroke. Dikmen also swam in the 2004 Olympics in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. As an assistant coach, Novitsky trained several athletes, including Aveyard, who was an NCAA qualifier, All-American and World Championship semifinalist, and Anna Christiansen, who was a three-time NCAA qualifier. In addition, Novitsky trained six former Fighting Illini athletes at the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials. As a swimmer, Novitsky was a two-time Division II All-American at Oakland University, earning a bachelor s degree in biochemistry in She was a student assistant coach for the 1991 Division II national champion Oakland Pioneers. Novitsky also earned a master s degree in kinesiology from Michigan. THE NOVITSKY FILE Hometown: Huntington Woods, Mich. 5 THE COACHING STAFF ALEC HAYDEN ASSISTANT COACH // FOURTH SEASON Alec Hayden is entering his fourth season as an assistant swimming coach with the Fighting Illini swimming and diving program. Hayden came to Illinois from William & Mary, where he spent one season as an assistant coach. In just one season at William & Mary, Hayden was the primary coach for swimmers who accomplished four conference records, 32 school records, 20 freshman records and 10 NCAA B cuts. His only recruiting class with the Tribe was the best in program history and included the first top-100 recruit in program history. At the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, he coached seven individual conference champions and three relay championship teams. Tribe swimmers took home co-swimmer of the Meet, Rookie of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. While working with the Nasa Wildcat Aquatics team, Hayden simultaneously worked as a volunteer assistant for Northwestern University. At Northwestern, Hayden worked with both the men s and women s programs, including work with an NCAA Championships finalist, two NCAA consolation finalists and five NCAA qualifiers. Hayden started his coaching career as an assistant senior coach with Nasa Wildcat Aquatics in April of Working primarily with the sprint groups, Hayden coached athletes who set one national age group record and 11 state records. He coached three individual state champions and the U.S. Open 100 butterfly runner-up. As an athlete, Hayden was a four-year letter winner and two-year captain as a member of the Northwestern Wildcats swimming team from Hayden was an All-American at New Trier High School, and he was also a team captain and four-year All-Conference honoree. Hayden graduated from Northwestern in June 2008 with dual degrees in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences and Economics. Prior to joining the staff at William & Mary, Hayden served as the head senior coach for the Nasa Wildcat Aquatics team, which was comprised of 40 high school and eighth-grade swimmers. Under his tutelage, Wildcat swimmers set one national age group record and eight state records. He coached three swimmers who qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. He coached four swimmers to a combined 14 state championships and also coached the freestyle USA Swimming Junior National runner-up. At the 2012 National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals, he coached the Wildcat boys to an eighth-place national finish and the combined team to a 10th-place finish. CHRIS WATERS DIVING COACH // 11TH SEASON Chris Waters begins his 11th season as the Illini diving coach. Last season, Waters oversaw the training of NCAA Zone C qualifiers Olivia Kassouni and Madeline Kuhn. In the season he oversaw the training for Erika Murphy, Olivia Kassouni and Raquel Corniuk. Waters came to Illinois with a wide variety of experience as a diving coach, including stops at Tulane, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Missouri State. At Tulane, Waters had a top-12 finisher in both the one-and three-meter diving competitions at the Conference USA Championships. W aters also coached one Syracuse diver to the NCAA Zone A Championships in 2005 and had two divers place at the Big East Conference meet. Waters coached an honorable mention All-American in the one-and three-meter diving competitions at Division III Connecticut College in 2000 and was named Missouri Valley Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 1999 after coaching the Male Diver of the Year and the men s one-and three-meter champions at Missouri State. A member of the United States Diving and the Professional Diving Coaches Association, Waters has coached six Academic All-Conference selectees throughout his career. He graduated from Castleton State University with a bachelor s degree in criminal justice in 1991 and earned a master s degree in health promotion and wellness management from Missouri State in ILLINOIS SWIMMING & DIVING // 5
