3 THE FIGHTING ILLINI ARC POOL The ARC pool features a 50-meter by 25-yard pool of eight competitive lanes for varsity swimming, as well as an outdoor 50-meter four-lane pool. The pool water is temperature and chlorine regulated by a computerized filter system, and rough water during competition is minimized by trench drains. Also featured in the facility is a separate diving area adjacent to the competitive swimming lanes, in addition to an outdoor diving area. The diving facilities include two one-meter springboards over 13-1/2 feet of water and two three-meter springboards over 14 feet of water. All springboards are maxi-flex Model "B" and are mounted on Dura-Firm fulcrums and hinges on top of welded Kiefer stainless steel standards. The dry-land equipment includes one trampoline and one dry-land diving board, also with an overhead spotting rig. The facility has added the Colorado Time System No. 5, one of the most sophisticated timing units available. The sophisticated system provides complete and accurate meet results and times quickly and efficiently. The ARC pool includes new features as well, such a 1,175 square-foot locker room. Campus recreation is also adding a new hall of fame area inside the aquatic center, in addition to a new scoreboard and video screen ILLINOIS SWIMMING & DIVING // 3

4 THE COACHING STAFF SUE NOVITSKY HEAD COACH // 19TH SEASON Sue Novitsky enters her 19th season as the head coach of the University of Illinois swimming and diving team. Novitsky, who joined the University of Illinois swimming and diving staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 1994, begins her 23rd season as a part of the Illini program. After three seasons of working as the volunteer coach, Novitsky was promoted to assistant coach in the fall of In August 2000, she was hired by former Director of Athletics, Ron Guenther, as the fifth head coach in the program s history. In 18 years at the helm, Novitsky has led the Illini to a dual meet record of , good for the most wins in program history. The Huntington Woods, Michigan, native also oversaw the development of First Team All-Big Ten honorees Anna Christiansen (2001) and Barbie Viney (2006). In addition, Novitsky has sent 16 individual swimmers to the NCAA Championships, as well as relay teams in both 2002 and During her time in Champaign, the Orange and Blue have set program-best times in all 23 swimming events and also 1-meter, 3-meter and platform diving. Novitsky s first year as head coach was filled with success as three Illini qualified for the NCAA Championships, and Jessica Aveyard repeated as an All-American in the 200 backstroke. Novitsky s swimmers continued their success at the national and international levels, as Aveyard and Ilkay Dikmen qualified to represent their native countries at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Aveyard, swimming for the United States, reached the semifinals in the 200 backstroke, while Dikmen, a 2000 Olympian, competed for Turkey in the 200 breaststroke. Dikmen also swam in the 2004 Olympics in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. THE NOVITSKY FILE Hometown: Huntington Woods, Mich. In addition, Novitsky trained six former Fighting Illini athletes at the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials. As a swimmer, Novitsky was a two-time Division II All-American at Oakland University, earning a bachelor s degree in biochemistry in She was a student assistant coach for the 1991 Division II national champion Oakland Pioneers. Novitsky also earned a master s degree in kinesiology from Michigan. 5 THE COACHING STAFF ELLIOTT MCGILL ASSISTANT COACH // SECOND SEASON Elliott McGill enters his second season with the program after holding the Head National Group Coaching position at the Nitro Swimming Club in Austin, Texas. Prior to coaching in Texas, the Champaign, Illinois, native was the head coach at Eastern Illinois University. At the time of hire at EIU, McGill became the youngest head coach in Division I collegiate swimming (25). Assistant Swim Coach at Auburn University, was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team and earned a gold medal, swimming a leg on the fastest 4x100-meter relay team in London. Colin was a member of the EIU swim team from , earning All-Summit League honors three times under the coaching of his brother. McGill attended Champaign Central High School and he and his wife, Emily, and daughter Grace reside in Champaign. While coaching in Texas, McGill was named to the 2016 and 2017 USA Swimming National/Junior National Team Coaching lists. He was also named the 2015 South Texas Age Group Coach of the Year and was named a 2015 FItter Faster National Age Group Finalist. As head coach for the EIU swimming program, McGill's team's posted 34 school records, 150 All-Time Top Ten EIU Performances, 15 All-Summit League Athletic honors, as well as 43 All-Summit League Academic honors. The 2009 graduate of EIU earned second-team All-Summit League honors during his time in Charleston and earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees from the university. McGill has three siblings, Tyler, Colin and Sarah. Tyler, who works as the MANNY POLLARD DIVING COACH // SECOND SEASON Emmanuel "Manny" Pollard enters his second season with the program after being named head diving coach in July In his first season with the Illini, Pollard oversaw the development of junior Ling Kuhn, who became the first Illinois diver to score in three events at the Big Ten Championships. At the event, Kuhn also set the school's platform diving record with a score of native also comes to Champaign having had opportunities to observe Chinese diving, as well as the Beijing Diving Team. In addition, Pollard was an International English Teacher in Beijing, China from As an athlete at the University of Minnesota, Pollard garnered a number of individual accolades. A two-time Minnesota Diver of the Year, Pollard also earned All-American honors three times, once in 2015 after placing 13th in 1-meter competition, and two times in 2016 after placing fifth on the platform and 13th again in 1-meter competition. During his time in Minneapolis, Pollard scored all four years at the Big Ten Championships in 1-meter, 3-meter and platform competition. He also earned Academic All- Big Ten honors three times.
