Congratulations to our wonderful swimmers competing locally and interstate. Our club is very proud of all your efforts. I encourage you all to support the SSPW Hosted meet to be held on 26 th and 27 th October This is a major fundraiser for our swimming year which along with our Club Fees and minor other fundraising through the year, give us the funds to provide many events throughout the year such as subsidy for the SSPW Christmas Party, providing breakfast after a club meet or providing financial assistance when we travel to compete with country clubs such as Bunbury/Albany. Please feel free to come and speak to me at the pool or contact me by e- mail devyndb@bigopnd.net.au with any feedback or questions that you may have. 2 Coaches Hannah Barnett Competition Squad I have been involved in swimming since I can remember, but I only got serious about it when I quit gymnastics. I have always loved the water so with no more gymnastics, I had the time to give swimming a real go. Becoming a swimming coach seemed like the natural thing to do. Swimming, and being part of Southside has given me so much so I wanted to be able to give something back to our swimming community. Coaching the younger swimmers was the perfect opportunity to do so. My personal philosophy on how to be a great swimmer is to train hard and enjoy what you are doing. You aren t going to get results if you aren t willing to put in the effort. Swimming is not a sport that you can half do it s all or nothing which is probably one of the hardest things about it. Enjoyment is such a major factor because if you don t like what you are doing, getting up at 5 every morning, training after school every day and spending the majority of the weekend catching up on homework becomes extremely difficult to do. But in the end, when you get the results you want, all the early mornings and hard work are well worth it. Claire Ciccotosto Transition Squad I came to competitive swimming relatively late and almost by accident. When I was in Year Six, I broke my leg, and once the cast was off, it was clear that I wouldn t be running cross-country or riding my bike for a while. In order to stay active, the obvious option was swimming training. I think I was only planning on swimming as a short rehabilitation exercise but by the time I had regained the strength in my leg, I had settled into the routine of multiple sessions per week and made some awesome friends. They were really great examples of competitive swimmers; disciplined and hardworking with the fast PBs to prove it. Once I d figured out that the more effort you put into training, the faster you ll swim at competitions, it was hard to stop. I don t swim competitively anymore but I am so happy to still be involved with the club, using my own experiences to help me coach the Transition Squad. When I consider how much swimming has influenced my life, it s funny to think that my parents probably thought they were only signing me up for a couple months! When I am not coaching, my day is spent either swimming or studying. I am currently in my second year of a human biology course at Curtin, hoping to one day become a doctor. 2
3 SSPW Hosted Meet We NEED your help Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October 2013 This fundraising meet is scheduled for the weekend of 26 and 27th October, which is at the beginning of the season. This is a major fundraiser for our swimming year which along with our Club Fees and minor other fundraising through the year, give us the funds to provide many events throughout the year such as subsidy for the SSPW Christmas Party, providing breakfast after a club meet or providing financial assistance when we travel to compete with country clubs such as Bunbury/Albany. Because the meet this year falls so close to the registration and squad fees, this year, we are not asking for Member sponsorship of events (covering Medals etc.) but those members with businesses whom are able to support are strongly urged to please assist the club in hosting this meet with donations and/or, business sponsorship. Any business that is able to provide business sponsorship will be recognised in the Meet Program on the day, be thanked in any subsequent SSPW publications such as the Southside Splash. Businesses will be displayed on the SSPW Website, Facebook Pages and the soon to be released SSPW Club App. The Club would also like to be able to raffle a hamper each day, so if members have contributions they can donate, they would be gratefully received. In order for the SSPW Hosted Meet to be a big success for all members, we need all hands on deck - particularly on the day to cover many positions around the pool such as Check Starters, medal presentations, runners, refreshments, raffle and program selling and timekeeping Senior Swimmers are expected to attend on the under 12 Meet day to assist where possible with the event. If you have any questions regarding the SSPW Hosted Meet or if you are able to offer any assistance with Business Sponsorship, Donations or Raffle Hamper items, please contact the people below: Contacts: Overall Meet Director: Stella Carrara (carrara@iinet.net.au) Meet Programming (and sidekick to Stella) Helen Harding (hardingr@iinet.net.au) Fundraising/Donations: Kristina Morisey (kmorisey@hotmail.com) Sponsorship notification must be received by no later than Monday 15th October to be acknowledged in the meet program. 3
4 Australian National State School Swimming The Australian National State School Swimming Teams competition was held this year in Adelaide from the 7 th to the 14 th of September. Cameron Gee, Chris Purcell, Jack Swainson and I [Georgia Welsh], all members of Southside Penhros Wesley Swimming Club were part of a team of 50 from all over WA who competed in the competition. Each of the 4 swimmers, participated in 6 or more events, all 4 came home with multiple pbs [personal bests] and even a bronze medal. Most of the racing days had a similar routine, pool, then back to the resort and a strict curfew of 9.30pm. Over the long days, we all became a tight group and cheered each other on with enthusiasm. For some of the team like me, it was their first time competing nationally and for those that had been before the honour of representing WA again was still strong enough to make everyone strive for success. WA came home with the most pbs of all the states. Overall the trip was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I loved every second of it, and definitely some high lights were the racing, the royal show day, dinners with the team, the bus trips and just bonding with everyone. I made so many friends on this trip that I will be able to see at future meets and even outside of swimming. Georgia Welsh The adventure week started at the airport where we all gathered together wearing the WA black and gold uniform. We were all excited and noisy, despite it being early and cold. The flight to Adelaide was spent getting to know one another, and trying to knock off as much homework as possible. I did manage to read Macbeth! Most of our time was spent at the Adelaide pool, either competing or cheering on our team mates. WA was a small team and not one of the top ones, but we were the happy, supportive fun team. I swam in individual events and also 4 relays. My best results were PBs in 2 breaststroke events (I m no breaststroker!), and coming 5 th in the 50m freestyle finals with a time that means I have qualified for Nationals in Sydney next year. On our day off, we all went to the Adelaide Royal Show, which is very similar to Perth s, so I had to buy a few show bags, and not be tempted to eat all the chocolate until the competition was over! Another of my achievements was to win a t-shirt from Outback Jacks for eating a 1kg steak! Overall, the trip was a wonderful team experience, and a reward for all the training. I was pleased with my swimming, and made many new friends. I am looking forward to catching up with everyone again over the LC season at Challenge. 4 Cameron Gee
5 On Saturday 7 th September, I flew to Adelaide for a week with my good friend Rafael, to represent CBC in the State School Sport Swimming Competition, it was great to qualify earlier in the year, and I was really looking forward to travelling and meeting new swimming friends from around WA. I was also really pleased that Cameron, Chris and Georgia were also representing their schools, so we would be able to compete on the national level together. My coach for this trip was Adrian Davini, and even though I had seen him on pool deck at challenge I didn t really know him. He was great and a good support to the years age group, (he was also a lot of fun when we were relaxing) The accommodation was good and I was sharing with 3 boys all of which I had seen competing, but didn t know them that well, so it was good to get to know them. The team all looked very smart in their uniforms when travelling to and from the pool and also around the pool. I swam in relays, the 100 free, 200 free, 400 free and 800 free (which was a new one for me!) I was happy with my swims, I got PB s in 100 free, 400 free, 800 free and was just over in 200 free. I got top 6 for all events apart from the 800 where I got a bronze. I also really enjoyed the relays, the team support for each other was outstanding. Our food was good and there was plenty of it. Our educational day trip to the Adelaide Royal Show was a good day, giving us time to chill out and socialize in a large group. I am really happy I participated in the competition as I don t think I will get the opportunity next year as I will be in year 12. I thoroughly recommend the experience if you are successful enough to qualify. Good luck age 12+ for next year! On returning to Perth on the Sunday evening, I had 2 days back at school, busily catching up with schoolwork, to the best I could. Then I was luckily enough to be chosen to represent WA on their State Team, competing in Canberra at the AIS. This was a huge honor, I was chosen from my swims at the SC State Champs. I swam the 200 free, which I equaled my PB, and the 4 x 200m freestyle relay. I was anchoring and was very nervous, especially when I was told the swimmer next to me from Queensland, swims 200 free in 1.47! I swam as fast as I could, achieving a 2 second PB, we came 5 th, (5 th, 4 th and 3 rd place were all within the same second) so it was a very close race. The team support was amazing and lots of cheering and shouting. There were some amazing swims and lots of records broken for WA. The coaching staff were very supportive, giving lots of advice. At the end of the competition I was proud to receive 1 of the 4 Coaches Team Player Award trophies. This experience has given me the inspiration to want to participate in more teams and push myself to the highest I can achieve. I will be training hard and pushing all of my teammates towards LC States and the Christmas extravaganza meet in the next couple of months, and I am very pleased to have already achieved 2 National Times for April I want to thank SSPW Swimming Club, Nick, Lish and Bundy, for welcoming Libby and myself so warmly, and supporting our targets that we want to achieve.
