15 President s Report The 2017/2018 season has no doubt been a season of change and hard work for The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club. Enthusiastic members of the Management Committee have led the way and formed a great team that have achieved success. This past year has been busy for all our competitive members, both swimming and/or life saving. Whether a member is swimming 1 event at an interclub meet on a Sunday or 10 events at a National competition everyone is always proud to don the blue and white and represent The Hills. Key results are highlighted in the individual reports following. The 2017/2018 season began with our Registration Day, combined with Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre s Open Day, last September. This day gave us the opportunity to welcome and guide many of our 132 new members, organise uniforms and cook up a storm on the BBQ. It was great to have past Australian swimmer Geoff Huegill and Yampu, the Optus Dolphin with us on the day. Thank you to everyone, not just committee members that helped to make the day a success. Our club celebrates the successes of each and every member. This was done on 25 June 2018 at the Toongabbie Sports Club. Thank you to Carly Kirk for securing the venue to host this annual event. Finding a location that can accommodate all our members and their families is no easy task. 25 weeks sped by fast and before we knew it our Tuesday and Friday evening programs were completed for yet another season. These programs are organised, managed and run completely by volunteers. Life savers that were trained at our club willingly mentor our newer and younger members, assisting them to complete their RLSSA awards. The backbone of our Tuesday night life saving program are Life Members Melanie Williams and Sandra Richardson. Our Friday night swim club competition has been managed this past season by Colin Jarvis with David Delaney, sitting quietly recording all the data. We are truly grateful for the roles these men have played in the running of our Friday night program. Of course, this work by these 2 volunteers is only worthwhile if we have life members, Graham Taylor and Alan Kerruish present to guide our swimmers on correct stroke techniques the members of our club will be forever in debt to these 2 gentlemen and the service they provide for us. We also appreciate the parents that volunteer their services without you we could not run our Friday night program. To show appreciation for the continued support of Friday night swim club, throughout the season, our Friday Swim Club Convenor, Colin Jarvis recorded the names of the volunteers that helped out each week. The names were placed in a draw, with the prize being, 1 competitive membership for the 2018/2019 season. The winner of the swimming volunteer award for the 2017/2018 season is the Chevalier family. 15

16 2017/2018 Friday night swim club saw swimmers not only focusing on swimming PB s but also on achieving Progression Times and attempting to swim longer distances. Swimmers received certificates to recognise these achievements at our Annual Award s Presentation. Once again, Flip Out, Castle Hill generously provided us with gift certificates to present to our Swimmer of the Week, whilst the Aqua Shop provided the gift vouchers that we handed to the Swimmers of the Month over the summer period. These Swimmers of the Month also received Belgravia Leisure/The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club endorsed certificates and swim caps. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than chatting with swimmers on a Friday evening and hearing about their PB s or sitting in the stands at SOPAC, watching swimmers of all ages swim, striving to achieve qualifying times for their next meet. The road to competing at a higher level of aquatic competition, be it swimming and/or life saving, is long and arduous, it requires dedication to hours of training regardless of the weather, early mornings and at times it can mean sacrificing social outings with friends. Behind all our competitive members are dedicated parents, parents that provide a constant taxi service, laundry service and catering service to fuel our swimmers to keep them going. Whilst they may not always remember to say the words, Thank you to us, the satisfied look on their faces at the finish of an event, says it all. Publicity, promotion and fundraising for the club have been a prime focus this season. The support for our Friday night BBQ has been overwhelming, with many of our families taking the opportunity to have a night off from cooking to enjoy the gastronomical delights cooked up on our BBQ. Thank you to Damian Callum and his employer, Dick Stone Meats for assisting with our BBQ supplies. Our Friday night raffles, Christmas raffle and Final End of Summer Season raffle have been supported by not just our club members but also patrons of the Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre. We are grateful to the centre management for granting us permission to sell the tickets throughout the centre. Along with our regular Bunning s BBQ, this season saw us operating our inaugural Saturday morning car wash. Club members had lots of fun with the soap and water. Thank you to our Swimming Publicity Officer Mark Harvie for organising and promoting this event. All monies raised this season have been put towards the shortfall of funds we require to replace the outdated and broken diving blocks. We have been fortunate to secure a NSW State Government Communities Building Partnerships Grant, from our local member for Baulkham Hills, The Honourable David Elliot MP, that has partially covered the purchase price of 8 new Omega diving blocks and 1 backstroke ledge. We are grateful to Daren Price and Sinnathamby Sivapiragasam from the Building Assets Team at The Hills Shire Council for the advice and support they have given over the past 12 months. Both Daren and Siva are responsible for organising the work order and funding needed for the modification to the pool deck which is required to fit the new dive blocks. We anticipate that we will be commencing the 2018/2019 season with Omega diving blocks in place. The new diving blocks are not only for our club members but will allow all members of the Hills shire community access to superior starting equipment at their local 50m pool. Daren Price and Sinnathamby Sivapiragasam from The Hills Shire Council are also the men responsible for organising the funding and supplier to replace the severely worn, hazardous carpet in the clubhouse thank you. All user groups of our clubhouse are most appreciative. 16

17 Along with receiving grant funding to assist with the purchase of the new Omega dive blocks we are also grateful for grant funding received from: o Department of Social Services Volunteer Grant recommended to us by The Honourable Alex Hawke MP, Federal Member for Mitchell. The money received from this grant was used to purchase a new BBQ and the laptop required to operate our Friday Night Swim Club. o NSW State Government Local Sport Grant Program, The Honourable David Elliot MP, Member for Baulkham Hills. The money received from the grant was used to purchase 3 new shade shelters, which we have all seen in use numerous times throughout this season. Early in the 2017/2018 season the swimmers headed off on a road trip to compete at the Woy Woy Long Course Qualifying Meet at the Peninsula Leisure Centre at Woy Woy on NSW Central Coast. After 2 days of competing the team was able to relax on the Saturday afternoon in the spa at the Mantra at Ettalong, followed by dinner and dancing. BBQ breakfast for everyone on the Sunday morning on the foreshores of Brisbane Water was followed by team building games organised by our Games Master Colin Jarvis. The 2017/2018 season saw the launch of Swimming NSW Lane Ropes to Leadership program. 7 of our members attended a Youth Leadership camp at Vision Valley. The aim of the camp was to upskill the young leaders of our sport in the areas of coaching, technical officiating, event management, public speaking, personal development in order to help create an environment which encourages teenagers to keep swimming. Following this camp 3 of our members went on to complete their first Technical Official assessments. Congratulations to Darcy Andrews, Ashlee Bloomfield and Olivia Burns. Swimming Australia s Optus Junior Dolphins program continued throughout this season. We held a small Optus Junior Dolphin s event on a Saturday morning in November. This event was organised and managed by the young members of our club who were involved with the SNSW Lane Ropes to Leadership program and our Club Captains. Dolphin Trainers, Danyal Bloomfield and Charlene Easton, watched over our little Optus Junior Dolphins along with past Australian Dolphin, Kurt Herzog and Yampu the Optus Dolphin. This year s 12 & Under Development meet was held as a twilight meet. Once again it was open to all members of the swimming community along with any of our local primary school children that wanted the opportunity to compete in a swimming carnival. We are grateful to The Hills Shire Council and Waves Facility Manager Amanda Lenton for allowing us to have full use of the pool for this significant club event. Thanks must go to Graham Taylor, for organising enough extra Technical Officials for us to be able to hold this meet. The winners of the Primary School Trophy s were for the girls, Jasper Road Public School and for the boys, St Michaels Primary School. 17

18 To our Club Captains for life saving, Jayme and Jordan and Swimming Lauren and Gavin - thank you. Every time I have asked for your help, your immediate response was yes. Throughout the season you have led by example and have worked well together to ensure our younger members had a fun time at the Optus Junior Dolphins event in November, the Christmas Party and the 12 & Under Development Meet. Thank you for displaying such confident leadership skills and contributing to our Annual Awards Presentation. Our swimming coaches, Pedro Barbosa, Greg McWhirter, Germán Pujol, Roderick Yeung and, Diana Torosian and our life saving coach, Andrew Bowden, we are forever grateful for your commitment, guidance, support, patience and the many hours that you devote to each and every one of our athletes. The awards our members have received with Swimming Australia s Junior Excellence Program are testament to the dedication the swim coaches have made to our members. From 87 awards in the 2016/2017 season, we have made it to triple figures and have received 103 awards for the 2017/2018 season. Amanda Lenton, and the staff from Belgravia Leisure that operate the Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre we are continuously appreciative of the use you allow us to have of the fully-staffed facility Tuesday and Friday evenings and Sunday morning. This season we were also privileged to have the use of your facility for both our swimming and life saving carnivals. Vouchers donated by the facility were used as fundraising raffle prizes in our Final End of Summer Season Raffle. Thank you! We look forward to continuing this partnership throughout the 2018/2019 season. The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club does not run on its own. It takes a small army of volunteers to co-ordinate club nights, fundraising, competitive and social events. The work these people do is in addition to looking after their families and their regular paid employment. Thank you to the members of the Management Committee for your commitment and selfless service to our club this past year. It has been wonderful to work with such like-minded members, volunteers that are willing to devote their spare time to helping our members achieve their dreams and make their experience in the sport of swimming and life saving pleasurable and memorable. After a total of 7 seasons on the Management Committee of The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club Inc, 7 seasons as Registrar, 3 seasons as Registrar and Vice President and the past 2 seasons as Registrar and President I feel the time has come for me to move aside. In the past 2 years as President I have witnessed the club grow by 15% and embrace change. It was an honour to be President of the club as we celebrated 50 years of The Hills. The support and enthusiasm I have received from the Management Committee has been immeasurable. Decisions we have made have always had the best interests of the club and its members in the foremost. It has been an absolute privilege to be able to serve on this committee with the club s 2 Vice Presidents, Graham Taylor and Alan Kerruish, who between them have a combined knowledge exceeding 80 years. Thank you also to all the club members and parents for your continued support. No matter where I am, be assured, I will still be watching with much fondness, the achievements of the competitors wearing the blue and white of The Hills. JUDY WARTMANN President 18
