1 WIDE BAY SWIMMING CHAMPS NOOSA SWIM SQUADS NOOOZE #10 MARCH 2015 Noosa enjoyed a great district swim meet at Kawana Waters from March 6 th - 8 th, and many of our swimmers achieved personal best times, and even National qualifiers. Sixteen swimmers competed for our club, and Charlie Thompson led the way with a NQT in his 400m Freestyle 4min08.62 as well as an excellent 1: m Free, both rewarded with gold medals! Shailee Finney also won Gold in the 16 years 200m Freestyle with 2:15.36, whilst Brooke Finney completed a double, winning Gold in both the 17 years 100m (1:02.71) and 200m (2:15.88) Freestyle events. Jed Cooney competed well in his first Wide Bay long course event, placing 3 rd in the 200m Free in 2:06.06, and reaching a new PB for the 100m with a Talisa Brady swam a solid 4min50 and 2:16.27 for her 400m and 200m Free as she prepares for National Age Championships in Sydney at Easter, whilst Matthew Lewis dominated in his new 10 years age category, ripping 5 seconds from his PB in the 100m Fly winning Gold in 1:18.92, along with Silver medals in both the 200m IM (2:57.31)and 100m Breast (1:42.38), and Bronze in his 100m Free (1:10.72) and 100m Back (1:30.27)! Max Smallman improved a staggering 7 seconds to place 5 th in the 200m Freestyle in 2:28.08, and also slashed16 seconds from his 400m Free to achieve a 5: Mia Smallman won Bronze in the 14 s 200m Free with 2:22.54, and joined Talisa Brady (2:16.27) as one of Noosa s best middle distance Freestyle prospects. We are working hard to expand our pool swimming ranks this winter short course season. STATE NIPPERS EXCEL AT MAROOCHYDORE prestigious event. I m sure many of you have read the newspaper reports about Queensland s State nipper s Championships at Maroochydore last weekend, and needless to say a host of our swimmers were successful in winning medals and achieving their best results. Highlights during this event included performances from both Sunshine Beach and Noosa surf club members, and we are extremely proud to have helped these competitors excel at this Standout individual performances from Cooper Williams; winning every water event for the 15 years age category as well as the Matthew Barclay memorial trophy for Noosa, Jonty

2 Redwood; dominating the swimming events for Sunshine in the 14 years, Electra Outram, Olivia Emanual, Talisa Brady, Riley Dixon and Emily Lethbridge featuring in all the medals action in the 14 years girls races, Zac Bromage winning silver in the 13 years surf, and Maverick Pettigrove winning the 14 years board, highlighted numerous individual successes for our swimmers at the NAC. In the surf teams events, we witnessed Gold medals for Sunshine Beach in the 14 boys; (Jonty, Maverick, Zach Brewer and Tom O Connor) and 14 girls; (Talisa, Olivia and Katie Gleeson), as well as 13 years girls; (Ruby Nolan, Jess McMaster and Imogen Smith), and boys; (Zach, Max Moore, Max Smallman and Flynn Ross), and in the 11 years girls teams; (Mikayla Smith, Lulu Korac and Abbey Tolano), as well as Gold for Noosa in the 12 years girls board relay (Maggie Harmer, Charlotte Lethbridge and Georgia Lorentson). Many more individuals qualified for finals including Zale Outram, Carl Vaughan, Grace Otto, Hayley Tolano, Francesca McKinley, Tiffany McKay, Amelia Ross, Bella Smith and possibly more. I must apologise for omitting anybody! It s so impressive to win gold in swimming events at a State Carnival well done everyone!! Add to this numerous individual and board relay, Cameron relay, sprint and distance running and relay successes, and one can appreciate the wealth of potential within our younger age ranks. Good luck to those competitors progressing to National surf titles on the Gold Coast at Easter, and keep in mind that your effort and commitment both in training and competition is far more rewarding than any medals you may accumulate. STATE SCHOOLS SWIMMING SUCCESS Last week many of our swimmers travelled to Brisbane to contest the Queensland State schools swimming championships at Chandler. Charlie Thompson won Gold in the 16 year 400m Freestyle, and Shailee Finney Bronze in the 15 years 800m Freestyle. Matt Lewis gained selection in the Queensland team for national schools championships in Adelaide in November, with four Gold medals in the 10 years division, winning the award for the most valuable swimmer in his age group. Aurelia Donger was also selected in this representative team, and further results will be released

3 when we have been fully informed! Talisa Brady, Jedd and Aleeda Laksey also competed with distinction at this elite school swimming championship. Nick Sloman is off to Gallipoli! While on swimming representative teams, it s great to report that Nick Sloman has been selected to represent Australia in the 5km event to be held as part of the 100 year event in Gallipoli during April. Nick will travel to Europe immediately after the national surf titles, and will race some of the world s best distance swimmers in this special event. Best wishes Nick we wish we were going! OPEN STATE SURF TITLES RACING THE WORLD S BEST A Magic three days on Maroochydore beach this weekend presented Queensland s best surf lifesaving competitors in colour and vibrancy, and again our swimmers were prominent in the action, featuring in a host of medal and finals action. Front and centre were the boys from Sunshine who won the 17 years teams race (Nick Sloman, Brock Redwood and Tristan Collins), and along with Tom Emanual and Noosa s Jaspre Outram featured in many 17 years finals. Nick was dominant in every surf swim, and unluckily aced in the individual surf race, but made amends with success in the iron man, winning the gold medal! Jordy Mercer was of course busy when the finals were staged, and led the prestigious open iron man until the death, with 3 rd and 4 th placed competitors finding that lucky wave to slip past her in the final stages. Jordy s tenacity in winning the open board and also placing in the open ski was impressive within a high quality field. Brock Redwood and Bailey Williams finished 3 rd and 4 th in the 17 s belt race, which brought back memories for me of many tough swims in days gone by.millennia past! Lana Rogers competed successfully in the 19 years events, and came home with Gold in the U19 Surf Swim on Saturday. Great result Lana!

4 Many of lifesaving s legends were in action over this weekend including Grant Kenny, Ky Hurst, Trevor Hendy and Shannon Eckstein to name a few. When you witness Ky Hurst slip by six of Queensland s best swimmers to win bronze for his team in the last race (six man taplin relay), having won his open ironman semi-final aged 34 you appreciate what skill, training, surf knowledge and experience can add to one s performance. (He was 50% fit and physically unwell!) It was great to see our friend Lincoln Dews win the 19 s iron man, having moved from Noosa to Currumbin due to university commitments, as well as enjoying some excellent racing from Alex Nolan who likewise has moved south recently for her studies. NATIONAL AGE SWIMMING CHAMPS IN SYDNEY OVER EASTER National Age Championships are on in Sydney from April 13 th to 20 th, and Noosa will be represented by Shailee Finney, Charlie Thompson and Talisa Brady. These three swimmers have achieved an outstanding level to qualify for this event, and we wish them every success as they take on Australia s best swimmers. National Age Championships are the pinnacle of age-group pool competition, and JR and I are keen to expand our team for future years, so get into the winter season and work towards this as a goal for 2016 the Rio Olympic year!- and on to Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018! NOOSA CLUB NIGHTS SCHEDULED FOR FIRST WEDNESDY EACH MONTH Our Club night will be held this Wednesday afternoon, April 1st from 5pm, and all swimmers are welcome to race and enjoy the BBQ and social. BYO drinks! Please make this a priority, as well as the club s season finale celebration in May at Water World. We apologise in advance if our records are incomplete, but we will invoice all currently outstanding fees at the conclusion of this term. Please us when you arrange funds transfers, as this way we can more easily track and record your fee payment into our database. If you require a receipt, this is the best time to request one, as it becomes cumbersome and time consuming to review records at a later date. Often the banks don t reference your transfer clearly, so an assists us to find the transaction according to the date, not just the reference data.

5 EASTER HOLIDAY SWIMMING Training will continue throughout the Easter break for all levels, so if you are in town make sure you keep in touch with the water! Junior sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm, and additional sessions may be arranged by request during senior timeslots. Fees for this period are economical at $30 per week, and should be included with your Term 2 fee payment. TERM TWO PROGRAM Noosa Swim Squads winter program will commence on Monday, April 20 th following the Easter break. Please refer to the attached Term 2 information sheet, or check the swimsquads.com.au website. Fees are identical to previous terms; $180 for Stingrays (Junior Squad), $210 for Sealions and Swordfish (Intermediate/Emerging Talent), and $300 for Orca s (Senior Squad) as this is a ten week term. EMERGING TALENT SWIM SQUAD NOOSA We have identified a need for specific challenges to target our emerging swimming talent at Noosa. During the past twelve months, many junior swimmers have successfully mastered the techniques necessary for success, and are now ready for further progressions. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage targeted swimmers to move ahead through providing a range of more challenging sessions each week to develop; Advanced Skills, Specific Speed, Aerobic capacity, Anaerobic power. Three weekly sessions with Brew have been planned, and attendance at all three is expected, along with one additional session of choice, to achieve the desired outcome. Membership to the Noosa Swim Club is also necessary, to enable entry to a number of stillwater competitions through the winter months. These allow a measuring of each swimmer s progress, and culminate in the Queensland Winter short course championships at Chandler in August. Our proposed training routine is: Monday morning Wednesday afternoon Friday morning Saturday morning Anaerobic Threshhold, Kick, Stroke skills Specific speed, Dives, Turns, Race night 1st week each month Aerobic challenge, short rest, over-speed HVO sprints Aerobic distance, 400m race pace, Stroke skills (4 th option)

6 The fourth session can be scheduled/replaced according to other sports commitments. JR and I know from experience that a commitment such as this benefits individuals not only in their swimming performance, but also in learning successful time management, an increased enjoyment from a team commitment, as well as enabling successive goal standards to be set, worked towards, and achieved. This structured program assists all members to attain the confidence and conditioning required to reach a new level of sports excellence. Swimmers will be notified of their invitation into this exciting progressive training program. TRAINING PUNCTUALITY AND ETIQUITE Our training program can only offer so much without the commitment of personnel within the swimming ranks. Recently we have unfortunately had difficulty enticing swimmers to enter the pool at the 5:30am start time, and this behaviour impacts both the physical and psychological benefits of our morning session. If swimmers continue to delay the start of training by refusing to enter the water prior to 5:35am, we are left with no option available, other than to exclude the offending swimmers from that practise session. It has recently become common to observe the masters swimmers complete 500m or more prior to our swimmers diving in, and this is an unacceptable habit which must be addressed if we are to provide a professional training environment. JR and I will not raise our voices to correct this habit, but will politely exclude any serial offender if need be from the squad session. Be the best you can be. at training sessions. in competition. at school. and throughout life, and strive to positively influence those around you for mutual gains and over-performance.
